The winner of this year’s Liverpool Art Prize is new media, film and sound artist Markus Soukup. Markus will be awarded £2000 and will also be given the opportunity to show his work at the Walker Art Gallery. Representing the best and most cutting-edge contemporary art being produced in the region Markus won for four multimedia works, situated mainly in the context of installation and the moving image, incorporating video, 2D and 3D animation. For the Liverpool Art Prize exhibition Soukup produced new work that deals with the construction and deconstruction of film, language and motion. Other areas of his work are digital photography, typography, graphic and interactive design, field recordings, sound design and electronic music. Arriving in Liverpool for the 2008 Capital of Culture year, Markus says “I felt always very welcome and accepted here as people are very open and talkative. I like it as it is not pretentious, people are themselves and keep positive even if situations are not easy”. Markus’ dedication to and admiration for Liverpool is indicative of the strength of the thriving art scene and the city’s importance as a contributor to the international contemporary art community. On receiving his award he said, ‘I am totally Mike Stubbs, Director of FACT presented the award, he said “Liverpool Art Prize has become a highlight on the city's cultural calendar and is an increasingly important opportunity for professional artists to test their principles and latest work in front of a wider audience. There is an authenticity and closeness between the public that comes to vote and the artists that keeps Liverpool Art Prize grounded, creating a real opportunity for Liverpool to celebrate its visual arts without too much pomp but a little ceremony.” Artinliverpool.com founded the Liverpool Art Prize in early 2008, it was one of the first major visual art events in the Capital of Culture year. The Art Prize is now a firmly established part of Liverpool’s annual arts diary, acknowledging the outstanding achievements of local artists and their contribution to contemporary art. It aims to promote national awareness and discussion of contemporary art in the city and to support individual artists in developing their practice.

Innovation Centre to offer £multi million boost for local entrepreneurs Entrepreneurs and established businesses from the North West will soon have access to additional business support following the launch of a new incubation hub. The £6 million Riverside Innovation Centre, based at the University of Chester’s Riverside Campus in the heart of Cheshire, is set for a September launch and will offer a variety of facilities to help develop untapped business potential. Jointly funded by the European Development Fund (ERDF) and the University, Riverside Innovation Centre is the first of its kind in Cheshire and will provide city-centre incubation units for fifteen start-ups. Tenants will include graduates starting their own business. In addition to spaces for new businesses, the Centre will focus on support for existing businesses seeking to fulfil their economic potential. Charlie Woodcock, the University of Chester’s Executive Director of Innovation and Development, commented: “This is a huge asset for Cheshire and the North West as a whole. With key support services like Business Link set to close in November of this year it has never been a more important time for us to invest in supporting new businesses in our region. “The Riverside Innovation Centre is a central point which will help address a variety of business needs and the standard of infrastructure, quality of support and ease of access is set to be among the most inclusive and integrated facilities in the North West.”

Pat Smears,, Foo Fighters In an interview with Jenn Nimmo-Smith

As their DVD, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, is released. It is an intimate and comprehensive portrait of the globally popular rock band. How long have you been in Demark for? We just came in for the day actually as we’re playing Stockholm tomorrow, and we only just got here, about half an hour ago! Can you just tell me a bit about your early days in Foo Fighters? Well, it was really fun, and really funny, there was some different people then we have different people now and we made some records, and we went on some tours.

How does it feel to be back here as apart of the Foo Fighters? As we know you went away and then came back. I like it better this time round; it’s more fun this time. We’re all grown up now, I think that helps, I don’t know, it’s just more fun, it’s different and I feel more comfortable. You were working in Dave’s garage for this album [Wasting Light], a sort of back to basics approach, were you happy with this? Yeah this was easily the best recording experience I’ve had, ever, and the best record I’ve ever made too. Somehow it was really easy, I’ve never made a record that was actually

easy, getting to the end, when it was over, instead of feeling like ‘oh it’s been going on and on I just want the end to come’ but this time it was like ‘oh no! It’s over?!’ Why do you think it was easier this time? I don’t know, there wasn’t a feeling of pressure – Butch helped to make it easy first of all, he fitted in well with everybody, it was like having an extra guy in the band and that made it a lot easier instead of having some boss telling you what to do, if that makes sense. That helped a lot and that we had practised so much before, and doing it at Dave’s house was so much more comfortable than being in a studio – in his own studio, it was kinda cool but still a studio.

In the DVD you had all of your kids running about with you during the recording – do you think that added to the chilled out vibe? Yes definitely, it was really chilled, we would all have lunch together, a lot of the time with the kids, that really helped, just being at Dave’s house helped a lot. What was it like working with Butch Vig on this album? That was really easy, he’s really mellow, easy… he’s really great at what he does, he’s really good at moulding your

songs and making them better, he’s really good at that. He’s really good at making you play how you should play, he kinda does it without making you feel stupid, but confident – somehow he made it ok when he tells you to play something five more times if it wasn’t good enough but he didn’t feel insulting or degrading. He just gets the best out of you, which is great. What were the key inspirations for Wasting Light? I don’t know, I would say the surroundings more than anything. Just the whole way it was done, the surroundings for the whole thing and practising before with Butch and all that stuff it’s one of those records that really took on where we did it.

Foo Fighters have been going for sixteen years, 7th studio album and now you’ve just brought out a new DVD – what made you decide bring out a DVD now? Well, there’s a couple of things; one is we just wanted to document the recording of the record at Dave’s anyway which was kind of the original idea and then it just seemed like the time as it’s been a long time and someone in the band had watched the Tom Petty documentary which was four hours or something like that and somebody said, you know what, we should do this now before it turns into a four hour film! It just seemed like the right time as we were filming anyway to document the making of the record.

Was it always planned or did it just come together, from just filming you guys in the studio? It was decided beforehand; well, originally Dave wanted to do kind of two films; a documentary of the making of the record but also a documentary about the band, but just not at the minute. We just thought maybe we would put this on a CD, throw in a DVD with the CD, maybe we’ll just do this for the fans, in bits and pieces for now, then once James was hired he decided that he wanted the movie to be and it became that. And now its all this! Having watched the documentary it seems to be an open account of the band, how did you feel about talking so frankly on camera? It felt weird, it’s a weird thing to do, a weird thing to watch, it’s great that we did it and all but we’re not going to watch it again! It’s just weird, unless you’ve done it you don’t really know a way to describe it, it’s very strange. Was it quite difficult to watch back? It wasn’t that it’s difficult, it’s just that its, I can’t even think of the word for it, it’s not that it’s difficult. You’re just not used to seeing when you already do it… it’s weird to see you talking on a film, it’s just weird! Documentaries about other bands, yeah love to watch that stuff, but when you’re in it, I mean I like the little part that I wasn’t in!

So watching it back was there anything that surprised or shocked you that anyone else said or anything you saw? There was nothing that shocked me, but there were a few things here and there that didn’t really surprise me but were like ‘oh I never knew that’, that kind of thing, but no – not really.

Moving onto your live shows, obviously you have just done the garage tour in the states, how do you feel about doing those shows in comparison to your bigger arena shows? They’re really hard to compare – theyre really all equally fun, we did a tour where we played in peoples garages in the daytime to about 50 people and that was really fun and different and kind of reminds you of when you first started playing in a band, and we did club shows where we did secret shows and clubs around… 3 hour shows and those were really fun for lots of different reasons for one you can

play the whole new record and open the set with just playing it all which is always really fun and they were long and hot and sweaty and everybody was, two feet from the stage, and now arena shows are obviously great, it’s the best thing in the world but I don’t really have a favourite way to do it, actually, my favourite way to do it is mix them up and always have something different coming up not to far in the future. Now we’re doing festivals so it’ll be really fun, but sometimes we’re doing club tours. It’s just whatever’s different. Do you have any plans for doing something similar, like a garage tour in the UK? I don’t know – I think right now we’re just on a big festival tour, I don’t know, I don’t look at the schedule! It seems like so far its basically just festivals.

With the UK shows coming up, you’re playing Milton Keynes bowl – you’ve played Wembley twice and sold it out twice – how did you feel when you sold out both dates at the Milton Keynes Bowl in such a short period of time? It’s awesome first of all but it’s really exciting to play as there was the famous queen concert at the Milton Keynes bowl in 1982 so whenever we play somewhere like that I have a film of queen playing which is extra exciting – the same thing kinda happened to me from the Wembley show too; I know the venue so well from the video footage so it’s that kinda thing – it feels like ‘wow, really? Us? We’re really doing this place, where this band did this gig?’. Is there anything special we can expect from your upcoming set at Milton Keynes? Yeah – but I can’t tell you! It’s all part of the fun!

You’ve also got a good few support acts, is there any acts in particular you think people should be checking out? I don’t know who they are, you’re going to have to tell me!

In particular you have a Scottish band called Biffy Clyro Ah yes! We’re with them today; we’re playing a bunch of shows with them. We just did a couple of weeks touring the US with them, they’re great, I love one of their albums. We always have a good time with them. You’re headlining T in the Park this year and with Biffy being from Glasgow they’ve got a huge fan base up there. I believe you played T in the Park back in 2002: 2002 I wasn’t around so I don’t know – that’s a Nate question!

How do you feel about coming to Scotland? We’re always excited; they’re a great crowd, one of the best crowds in the world.

What can we expect from the T in the Park headline set? Anything Scottish? Yes – but I’m still not telling you! But nice try. Have you got any good festival stories? No, nothing like that! We’re actually a pretty boring crowd of people. Bring the kids out, have lunch, have dinner, play a show. Any good survival tips for festivals? No; it’s easy, it’s fun. It’s an easy thing to do, no need for survival tips!

You’ve got a set coming up at Oxegen in Ireland, are you looking forward to going to Ireland? Yeah of course, I’ve been many times, great crowds all the time.

Head of Make up for, Liverpool Fashion Week and Lifestyle Monthly’s Beauty Editor

Well it’s been a busy month here at makeup towersshoots, couple of music videos ( check out scuzz & kerrang tv for Stormcorporation) and by the time this goes to print I’ll have just finished doing makeup on a sitcom for BBC3!! I’ve also just finished the 1st book in a trilogy called There’s no room for jugglers in my circus by Jason Cook that’s going to be made into a film at the end of the summer ( I’m heading the makeup team for that - very excited!!) and is definately well worth a read as it’s based on true life story. Plus plans for fashion week are hotting up- checkout the facebook page for upto date info. With all this running round I’m missing a tan so far this year, I’m sure I’m not alone.......Think Daisy Lowe, Florence Welch and Julianne Moore. So for those of us without a tan but still want to look fabulous and glowing here’s how to achieve that polished look in under 10 minutes. Use a brightening primer or balm as a base and will help to keep it in place followed by a tinted moisturiser to keep it looking sheer Skin flattering peach highlighters over the cheeks followed by illuminator on the cheekbones, bridge of nose and the cupid’s bow Sheer, light moisture based lipsticks or glosses finish off the look. Some great products to achieve this look include Hydraquench tinted moisturiser by Clarins (£27) and Urban Decay’s tinted moisturiser (£20), Beauty balm by M&S (£9.50), Topshop’s skinglow in light (£10), Benefit’s highbeam (£18), Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick in pink

quartz (£30.50), Bodyshop’s pink shimmer brick (£18). For those of you wanting to know what various celebs use here’s a few favourites.......... Kimberly Wyatt loves MAC lipstick in Impassioned and L’oreals voluminous mascara. Victoria Beckham recently tweeted that her perfect lipstick is YSL rouge pure shine shade 34 and for her nails Chanels new polishes (available this month) in graphite, peridot & quartz; Tamara loves her NARS bronzer for that sexy glow and Maybelline’s onebyone mascara; Cheryl Cole and Emma Willis are both L’Oreal fans using studio secrets primer and foundation, volume million lashes and youth code boosting serum. The latest cult product to have is Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Greed- a gorgeous shimmering 24carat gold hue that will last 24 hours and give vibrant colour, and even on it’s own you’ll love it. The latest for your nails is YSL’s Utopian Turqoise (£16.50) and Dior’s orangey shades in Paradise and Aloha (£23) as seen sported by Beyonce and Katy Perry recently.

Next month you can see how to wear two of the latest trends - Blue shadow as seen on Vanessa Hudgens and the smoky eye with neon lip sported by Gwen Stefani. Both can be very wearable as I’ll show. So have a gorgeous month and stay fabulous. And I’m available by text or facebook for appointments and tutorials- 07950411777 Photography: Keith Hitchmough

Dan’s our man....

he’s scouting for models on behalf of the UK’s top modelling agencies...

On my scouting radar this month.... It has been yet another amazing month for ‘out and about’ scouting. With fashion weeks fast approaching it is a crucial month to find those new faces for the big global fashion giants. Meet Ketil. This guy came in to my eye line at Milan airport as I was due to catch my flight back to Liverpool, it was fate!

This is Chris. Luckily for me Chris likes travelling too. I caught Chris whilst waiting for the train from Liverpool to London.

Currently signed in Paris, Milan and Norway he’s now part of a bidding war in fashion heaven, London! Good Luck Ketil!

Following our meet Chris has been signed with Joy in Milan and Studio in Paris readying for fashion weeks. Well done Chris!

Palazzo pants are back!! Yep you heard me! Palazzo pants, those traditionally hard to wear clown pants are back and are the seasons fit to have. We’ve had skinnies, harem and flares but now the palazzos have had a complete style makeover to go from circus, to high chic with amazing results.

The high street is in abundance with this highwaist fit and those fashionista’s who have already purchased theirs are looking fabalicious! Go that one step further and fuse this season must haves all together in one, animal print, palazzo jumpsuit @ River Island £26.99. Best worn with flats to enhance the outfit not the leg.

Festival season is now well underway, so surely that means only one thing....MORE shopping for ‘festival chic’ – yeees! The staple of any festival is obviously the good old welly, which look pure hot, wet or dry! Pop on these ultimate Americano pair from Office – Liverpool One @ £15 and accessories the boots with a sexy little denim belted play suit from Peacocks – Liverpool One @ £22 Finish nicely with a cut-fringed shoulder bag – Monsoon @ £70.

This preppy brand is pure awesome and Britain’s trump card to America’s Abercrombie and Fitch. With all the latest celebs tapping in to the prep look, there is no other place to start your university geek chic wardrobe than Jack Wills.

Their clothing draws heavily on the British heritage and culture, which is created by their designers. Design inspiration follows British military history, British sporting traditions, British country pursuits and living with quirky product / fabric details to reflect eccentric British style. This is integral to the ‘Jack Wills Fabulously British’ concept and look. Call in to the 22-24 Eastgate Street store, Chester.

DON’T FORGET – I’m looking to scout for ‘new faces’ at any cool events for major model agencies in London and New York.

PRESS CONFERENCE: RICKY BURNS AND NICKY COOK WBO World Super-Featherweight Champion Ricky Burns and former Champion Nicky Cook recently met at a press conference ahead of their clash at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Saturday 16th July.

Also in attendance was the chief-support contest between Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight Champion Tony Bellew and challenger Ovill McKenzie - in a return of their thrilling fight last December.

RICHIE DOWNES Team Kabon Liverpool cage fighter, Richie Downes is now training for his next fight in September. The 32 year old has only lost one professional fight out of nine that he has taken part in. He trains for four to five hours a day to ensure he is in tip top condition. He said, “Fighting is not the barbaric sport some people perceive it as. It’s a very disciplined sport which involves a lot of hard work and training. People don’t realise what we have to put ourselves through. Fighting has so many techniques which you must learn both on the ground and stand up. I love the sport, my fight 4th June was awarded fight of the night, my third time i’ve had this”. He added, “Training Can start anywhere from 8-10 weeks prior to the fight. Starting with changing my diet and cutting weight. I train upto 3 times per day for at least 4-5 hrs per day. Each session consists of a different discipline. Morning - Luta Levra and wrestling, Afternoon - Strength and conditioning, Evening - Mui Tai. You need to be very disciplined on yourself and be prepared to put in the hard work and determination to get to your peak condition”. Cage Fighting - or Mixed Martial Arts as it is known in the industry, is a full contact combat sport that allows a variety of fighting techniques and skills from a mixture of various martial arts such as Wrestling, Luta Lievra, Mui Tai and BJJ. It is the fastest growing sport in the world.

Prizefighter winner Rocky Fielding, plus Liverpool stars Joe Selkirk and Paul Butler attended with Lifestyle Monthly’s Head of Sales, Neil Woods

He said, “ I love getting into the cage and testing myself. All the training and disciplines and torture that I have been through comes to a head the moment we get into the cage. It’s just me and another guy. It’s not just about us knocking ten bells out of each other, he will have trained just as hard as me. But the thought does go through my head that I may get hurt. You could get your head smashed in if a knee goes into your head. You can have your joints manipulated in submission which could result in a broken arm or leg. The cage fighting is all about discipline and testing yourself.” Watch Richies last fight on www.p4tv.com Organised by OMMAC 10.

Well, the first thing that strikes you is the amazing view from the main dining area overlooking the world famous Mersey, with floor to ceiling windows it really is magnificent. The restaurant feels both vibrant and airy; you also notice how attentive the waiting staff are. My wife Yvonne, daughter Nancy and I got stuck into a selection of starters, including Malaysian Chicken and Lamb Satay marinated in Malaysian herbs and spices, char-grilled and served with peanut sauce. Next we had Aromatic Crispy Duck Pancakes, Julienne cucumber, baby leek with what has to be the most delicious plumb sauce I have ever tasted. We also had Shumi, a dish I’m not

normally fond of however, they were to die for. Then came our main courses, Thai style sirloin steak, fantastically tasty with fragrant spice. The leg of lamb came in a mild red curry sauce and fell to pieces at the touch. Nancy had her favourite chicken fried rice, a big portion and she had a damn good go at it! I would also recommend the fresh Malaysian salad with papaya, STUPENDOUS !!! , For desert we had deep-fried ice Cream and Banana fritters which was a perfect way to wrap up a perfect meal. When the weather is good there is an impressive outside sun terrace, which I can imagine busy with people indulging in al-fresco dining that can be best described as Malaysian Thai Fusion. With spectacular views of the waterfront and the iconic three graces, it is the ultimate venue for a summer evening.

n our arrival to Meet Argentinian restaurant, we were surprised by the unassuming exterior and apart from the flags outside we were unaware there was a restaurant within. However, once inside there was a warm and lively atmosphere present and we were quickly greeted by one of the friendly managers. Once we were shown to our table, we were asked for our drinks selection to which we thought it would be rude not to sample the authentic Argentinian beer ‘Quilmes’. The Menu had us salivating, until finally we had made our choice of Chorizo a la Parilla (spicy sausage to you and me – 5.50) and Pate de Pato (5.25) for our appetizers. For our mains, we chose the Churrasco (slices of marinated 16oz Sirloin steak) with jacket potato and blue cheese sauce (23.75) and the Lomo a la Gitana (10oz fillet Mignon wrapped in bacon & creamy peppercorn sauce – 23.95) with a side order of Papitas Asadas (roasted new potatoes with garlic & Thyme – 3.50).

Photography by Stephen Skingley at Capture Photography

The starters were tasty, and of ample portions and the Chimichurri dip was sharp and a great accompaniment to the chorizo sausage. However, the best was yet to come. The steaks arrived and were cooked to perfection (we asked for medium) The Sirloin steak could be cut like butter and just melted in my mouth. I only managed a few of the potatoes, as I was not willing to leave any of my steak! The Fillet Mignon also had a melt in your mouth texture and the peppercorn sauce was one of the best we have ever tasted with its thick creamy texture and just the right amount of spice. Despite being completely satisfied with our meal, sitting back for a few moments allowed us to make room for a desert. (Just the one, to share!) We opted for the Crepes de Manzana (Caramelised apple & toffee stuffed pancakes – 3.50) which was the smallest portion of the evening but considering what we had just eaten, this was of no concern to us. This was tasty, light and simple end to a perfect meal. If you are heading into the City for a Steak, than you can do no better than the Meet Restaurant.

SALT HOUSE Charcuteria & Tapas Bar At the entrance to Liverpool one on the corner stands the Salt House Tapas in a beautiful listed building which formerly housed the Church of England Diocese of Liverpool. Having previously eaten here we were really looking forward to a revist. With a nice friendly welcome from the manageress, we were shown to our seats, however, the memory of their uncomfortable seating arrangements soon came flooding back! A couple of cushions soon helped me, but my friend had to ask for a different chair to avoid a bad back! However, do not let this distract your attention from the fabulous food and generous selection of dishes. Having spent a long time choosing from the menu, we opted for the Joselito Chorizo board with Libbys toast with tomato for starters which set us up nicely for our main selection. I went for the Lobster risotto which was on the specials board, fried potato with brava sauce (the obligatory selection with a tapas!) and the sautéed chicken with tomato, chilli and basil. The chicken was soft and juicy and beautifully cooked and the sauce had just the right amount of garlic and chilli to make it

perfect. My husband opted for the lamb koftas with tomato chutney and yoghurt, slow roasted ribs and the Fillet steak with celeriac galette and chestnut mushrooms (which was also cooked to melt in the mouth perfection). The ribs were described as being in a sweet and spicy glaze which they appeared to have forgotten! They were a little dry for my taste, but he thought they were ok. After much deliberation (and an expresso!) we decided it would be rude not to try something from the pudding selection. Turron nougat caramel mouse and Rice pudding scented with bergamot were ordered, and we were not disappointed. Both dishes were delicious and a perfect end to an enjoyable meal. Being the designated driver, I stuck to soda water, however, my husband took advantage of the beer selection on offer and decided to opt for the authentic Cerveza Estrella Damn on draft. Apart from the uncomfortable seating arrangements, the Salt House Tapas has a lively and friendly atmosphere with helpful attentive staff who were able to give a knowledgeable recommendation of the dishes available including the special options. If you are in the mood for an authentic Tapas, the Salt House will definitely not disappoint in style, taste or atmosphere.

Hideout Cafe & Bar Jungle Rumble, Liverpool one. Half way up the enormous zig zag staircase on the way to the Odeon in Liverpool One is Jungle Rumble. From the outside you would hardly know it was there but enter the doors and you are presented with a 17,000 square foot crazy golf haven. The two 18-hole golf course also has a golf simulator, bar and a cafe, which is where we headed after a round of golf. To be honest it is not the place you would chose to come for lunch as the variety of food is very limited. However it is the perfect place to chill out with a latte and drinks with the kids after a round of golf. The seating arrangement is very comfortable, it is clean and the staff are very friendly, when they have time to come over, as they are always rushed off their feet. (This wasn’t our first visit) The menu only offered pizza or panini which doesn’t bode well for someone trying to cut down on their carbs. There

were also only muffins and chocolate bars on offer. Not a green salad leaf or vegetable in site which was disappointing. However, having previously hosted a children’s party here I knew they cooked chicken nuggets and I asked for them. The staff were most obliging and set about to make them. With the Liverpool One restaurants next door it is impossible to compete with them as a restaurant, but as a small cafe it does the job reasonably well. They need to hire more staff and the poor guys are rushed off their feet, which meant a short delay to the food coming out. But as I have mentioned before, this is THE perfect place to hold a children’s party. We had 30 children, the staff were well prepared and the party went very smoothly. In fact other kids commented that it was the best party they had ever been too. And I would definitely agree with them!

DECKING Tools and materials Chop saw Drill driver Jigsaw Tape measure Pencil Spirt level String line

Materials 6"x2" joists and beams 100mm screws

I

t's that time of the year when the Spring arrives and the sunny weather just makes you want to sit outside or even bring the outside in! Decking is a great way of doing that. Set each of your 6" by 2" wooden joists about 5mm apart, sitting them on 2 side ledger beams, these can be fitting to the wall or set into the ground. Fix the joists to the beams using an angle bracket to stop any movement. Using a 3mm wood drill bit; drill a pilot hole before screwing brackets in place to avoid timber splitting. Repeat this on all joists until frame is complete. If your joist’s span is more than 2 meters long you will need to fit a centre strut to help support the weight. These can be off

cut sections of the joists screwed into the joist and feasting onto the floor/ base. Now fixing the top decking planks to the frame, it's very important that you get the first board flush with the edge of the frame as this dictates where the rest of the plants will lie. Each plank must have 2 screws fixed into each joist it spans across, again pilot drilled through the planks to avoid the timber splitting. If the planks need joining all cut ends must sit firmly on a joist below. When fitting all planks you require a 5mm gap between each length. This allows any surface water to drain away and also helps the overall look and 27 style to your decking area.

THE FUTURE OF WASTE IS IN YOUR HANDS Members of the public are being asked for their say on how Merseyside should manage its waste as a new strategic blueprint is unveiled this week. A range of targets and options are identified in the draft document – called Resources Merseyside - which are designed to help the region’s local authorities meet tough environmental and resource management challenges. Residents will be able to get involved and share their views through a dedicated website. The Strategy document has identified a menu of options which have been developed as actions for change. These include: • Joint Working: Local councils to consider joining forces to deliver services which could include joint collection contracts, shared collection services, joint communications, education and awareness, governance etc. • Frequency of Waste Collections: Local councils to consider the best local system for the collection of refuse and recyclables. • Green Waste Charging: Consider charging residents for the garden waste they generate. • Food Waste collections plus treatment: Consider introducing separate collections for food waste. Knowsley and Sefton have already introduced opt in schemes. • No side waste: Consider a consistent approach across Merseyside regarding collections of any rubbish bags that do not fit inside a householder’s refuse bin. Chief Executive of Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority Carl Beer said: “What we must all understand is that – however we do it – we have got to do more to change our behaviour

where waste is concerned. Only then can we start to address critical environmental issues such as carbon reduction and landfill.” He added that any changes and decisions will be for individual District Councils to make themselves, based on their own circumstances. More than 3,000 residents have already helped develop the draft Strategy via doorstep surveys, focus groups and roadshows. The document for the consultation reflecting these comments will be available from 27th June until 26th August 2011, and then all members of the public can add their own views. Residents can read the key points of the new Strategy and give us their comments by contacting us on: T: 0151 255 1444 E: consultresources@merseysidewda.gov.uk W: www.dontwasteyoursay.org/strategysummary-stakeholders

RICK VAUGHN ON WHAT’S HOT & NOT FOR JULY

HOT Mark Wright

This guy without doubt is the king of Essex! I’ll have the job of officially welcoming him to Liverpool this month as he hosts what is bound to be a sell out night at Kingdom. Love it or hate it, the show has been a phenomenon and we’ll be in for a fun filled night with WAGs and wannabee’s so remember ... No carbs before Kingdom!!!

Summer time I love Christmas and I love the dark nights, but there’s just something special about long summer late nights and even better when we eventually get some sunshine. It makes the fact that we are all stuck at home and not abroad that little bit easier to handle, plus it’s great to text your mates and tell them the weather back here is as good as where they are.

Baggage allowance All airlines are on top of this one now, and god knows how you girls cope with the allotted 20kgs? I have tried so hard this year to get it below that but it’s just so difficult, especially when you have to have outfits for all occasions. Having to pay the excess really drives me mad!

Toning Trainers I know loads of people who have tried all sorts of toning trainers; and yes the majority of them have been a tad overweight. I have to be honest. If you want your trainers to make you thinner then I suggest you stop mooching around the house and get some running done in them.

Big Brother Brilliant I thought, when Channel 4 finally canned this rubbish! On the other hand, as bad as it is I just know I’ll find myself flicking in and out of it especially for the celebrity version on Channel 5. Who could forget George Galloway pretending to be a cat with Rula Lenska? Nevertheless, even remembering that brilliant piece of TV won’t get Big Brother out of the Not column.

Virtual Hosts

NOT

I have to be honest I don’t bother with Facebook much, but if get another offer to attend a so called busy club night that we all know is dead, then I’ll swing for someone. It’s amazing how many nights are allegedly giving us that last chance to get on the guest list!!! Ha ha ha ... I’ll pass thanks.

So it’s only July but for me, all the holidays and trips away have already been done and dusted till at least September or even October. As I said in my Hot section though, if we get the right weather then being in this country won’t seem too bad at all. Last month was another manic affair in the old social diary, and this month there is no letting up either. Can I just say what a great event Radio City LIVE was last month, it was totally packed out and for my money the highlights of the night were LMFAO, Example and NE-YO. I’ve never seen NE-YO live before, but what a true entertainer and great singer. Now, I know I mentioned Summer Pops in last year’s column, but this yearly event used to be the pinnacle of the live event calendar, we could not wait to purchase our tickets for the big top shows but now it’s become predictable and a bit weak in my own personal

opinion. The Summer Pops for my money needs a rethink and a makeover. It is a good event for the city but it needs bringing kicking and screaming into the 21st century. N-Dubz are back in town this month at the 02 Academy which should be great and Legally Blonde the musical is playing at the Empire. Fitness wise this month I’ll be cracking on with my running and my daily gym appointments, it’s amazing to see all the fair weather runners out and about along the docks and good on them I say as the more the merrier. Right that will do it for now as I am officially out of here! Join me next month when I’ll be talking the return of the footy season; X-Factor & Creamfields. Till then, stay safe and make sure you switch me on weekdays on Radio City from 10am.

PERSONAL SHOPPING LIVERPOOL

Got nothing to wear? Need some style advice? Head down to Top Shop for a personal shopping experience with a difference. Editor Amanda Moss checks it out

hatever size you are, shopping for clothes can be an intimidating experience. The mirrors, the lighting, the lack of privacy can all add to a nightmare shopping experience. But it doesn't have to be like that. Retailers recognise the change in the needs of the shoppers and Topshop is leading the way with their personal shopping service in Liverpool One. I was invited down for a morning's personal shopping with a budget of £500 to spend in store. A short phone call prior to my visit was made to check my size and what I was looking for - beach wear? Evening wear? Casual? I ticked all the boxes! Armed with a trusty friend for advice we made our way to the third floor. Tucked at the back of the store, you wouldn't know the PS store existed. Through some large double doors you enter a haven of pampering and privacy. Comfortable sofas, cupcakes and juice encourage you to chill out with magazines. Then I was led into my changing room which was like an Aladdin's cave of gorgeous merchandise. Accessories twinkled in the soft lighting - necklaces, belts, bags and shoes. Racks up racks of clothes blocked the floor to ceiling mirrors and large, plump chair. The PS girls had picked out a variety of outfits ranging from my staple wardrobe requirements (leggings) to garments I simply would never choose (tie die chiffon shirt?) Two hours of trying on clothes and I was in heaven. The time flew, I felt like a child again in dressing up clothes. The PS experience left me and my friend feeling as if we had been to a spa for the morning, which was amazing as shopping in town rarely stirs up such emotions! For my £500 I got whole new summer wardrobe: A chiffon dress, summer vest, green satchel, gold sandals, a T for the beach, a tie die dress, chiffon top, summer scarf, 4 pairs or leggings, head band, cardie, red jumpsuit and a chiffon jacket/wrap. The fun didn't end therewalking out of the store laden with bags made me feel like a superstar. Weeks later I am still mixing and matching my outfits and am constantly being complimented on my style of clothes. What is important to note is that the PS is a completely free service with no obligation to purchase. It is suitable for everyone, whether you are looking for a special outfit, or whether you just want to spruce up your current wardrobe, they are there to assist with their incredible style choice. And if you fancy it, why not have a Personal Shopping party with friends? The department will order in champagne and canapes and you can make a whole day of it. Now that's what I call 21st century shopping. To book an appointment with personal shopping email: personalshopping@topshop.com or telephone + 44 (0) 845 243 5544

Autumn/Winter 2011 Trends PSYCHOBILLY Psychobilly is an updated and feminine take on the rebellious dressing of the teddyboys of the 1960s. Modern twists elevate sleek tailoring and clean shapes; slim cigarette trousers in an opulent sapphire jacquard are the essential ankle skimming length and a simple t-shirt shape comes in panels of monochrome silk. Be prepared for the unexpected as hybrid garments become key; a royal blue wool crombie has soft black leather sleeves whilst the classic sweatshirt is luxurious with faux fur sleeves. Prints are bold with polka dots and window pane checks splashed across chiffons and silks whilst colour blocking features in ‘dad’ sweaters with the occasional punky motif. A much more hourglass silhouette takes over from that of the boyish with semi body-con dresses celebrating the waist and skirts predominantly in pencil or mid-calf length.

THRIFT Mixing elements of the laid-back 60s with a neater finish from the 40s post-war Britain, Thrift is an eclectic dressing-up box of girly vintage-inspired pieces. Dresses are ladylike in pretty florals and ditsy prints, appearing in a classic tea dress or drop waist shift shape and look newest in mid-calf length. Again, skirts are longer in length, are sometimes pleated or with side slits and look prim when worn with feminine peter pan blouses buttoned to the neck. Pretty detailing such as petal cut-outs around the neckline, lace inserts and contrasting panelling create interest whilst elegant beading on dainty pouch handbags finishes off the look. Colour is important; tapered trousers come in jade or tangerine and bright prints appear throughout, whilst the overall silhouette is soft and feminine.

GLAMROCK Glamrock draws inspiration from the 1970s, dismissing any grunge from the decade for an all-out glamorous and rockstar look. Faux fur is key to this trend and the bigger and brighter the better; an oversized shaggy coat made from goat hair comes in a fluoro pink, a sleek faux-fur stole in deep amethyst has extravagant pompoms and a mini skirt is made from amber-coloured feathers. Casual garments are given luxe treatment; a simple black parka is indulgent with a thick glossy black faux fur lining, skinny jeans are given a hitech coating and boxy silk shirts are elevated with all-over beading. Footwear and accessories are flamboyant with stack-heeled ankle boots covered in silver glitter and oxblood velvet clutch bags with gold jacquard panels. Emeralds and magentas interspersed with shimmering gold and silvers make up a jewellery-box colour palette.

BAVARIA With rich folkloric inspiration being key, Bavaria is a modern and distinctly luxurious take on keeping warm this winter. Outerwear is functional whilst indulgent; a khaki parka has faux fur sleeves and a gilet is extra long and made from patchwork sheepskin. Cable and aran knits are chunky and oversized to defend against the cold, and a usually floaty smock dress or blouse comes in a cosy heavy velvet. Handcrafted touches add texture and appear throughout with detailed embroidery on yokes and opulent beadwork on accessories.

The Royal Liver Building The centenary of Liverpool's sentinel

John Hinchcliffe, World Heritage Officer for Liverpool City Council explains the history of our famous landmark and the celebrations taking place this month in its honour. The Royal Liver Building was formally opened in July 1910 but it was not until 22 June 1911 that the clock at the Royal Liver Building was set in motion, at the precise moment of the coronation of George V in Westminster Abbey, effectively marking the opening of one of Liverpool's most remarkable buildings and cementing its regal connection. The clock was named, "Great George" in honour of the newly crowned king and it is indeed a king of clocks having dials 25 feet in diameter (2 1/2 feet wider than those on the clock tower that hold Big Ben).

The centenary of that opening is being celebrated by Liverpool City Council with a spectacular free 3D son et lumiere event every evening from 22-24 July, using cutting edge images and sound to bring the building to life. There is much to celebrate about this unique structure which stands as an edifice to technological innovation, use of eclectic architectural styles, corporate advertising, but perhaps most importantly, Liverpool's individualism and internationalism.

The Liver Building was the second of the three Edwardian palaces of commerce to be completed within the obsolete George's Dock. Together they look assertively out onto the mighty River Mersey and across the Atlantic to America, displaying the self confidence of what Disraeli had described as "the second city of the empire". Stylistically it is the most individual of the three buildings, but together they create one of the most recognisable and individual waterfronts in the world. The trio of buildings marked the zenith of Liverpool's role as an international seaport. Their massive scale and symbolism are evidence that Liverpool had become the world's supreme commercial port of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, a superlative achievement which also resulted in much of the port and the city being inscribed as a UNFSCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The inspirational driving force behind the development of the Royal Liver Building was the local architect Aubrey Thomas, who had previously designed the State Insurance Building on Dale Street, (famously used as a night club scene in Frank Clarke's Letter to Breschenev) and Tower Building on The Strand. The early use of a reinforced concrete frame displayed technological innovation, enabled rapid construction and made it the tallest office building in Britain at the time. The monolithic framework was clad in 25,000 tons of grey granite, sourced from

Norway, Sweden and Scotland, none of it more than 14 inches thick.

Today the building is a Grade I listed building in the top 2% of architectural or historic interest in the country. It is recognised as a unique blend of styles, from art nouveau to byzantine to baroque but it was not universally acclaimed at the time of its completion. Charles Reilly, the famously opinionated Professor of Architecture at the university described it as, "a mass of incogngruities.... course and commonplace in detail.... obviously plebian." The building was commissioned for the Royal Liver Friendly Society, which had begun as a burial club in 1850, originally meeting in the Liver Inn on St Anne Street. By 1906 it had grown in size and ambition and sought a new HQ that would be a monument and advertisement to its success and a landmark to voyagers from all over the Seven Seas. It was a stroke of genius by architect and client to agree upon the addition of the two great copper Liver Birds surmounting the towers, combining the logo of the Society and the ancient heraldic symbol of the city. Their artistic designer was a German, Carl Bernard Bartels, who did not initially receive the acclaim that he deserved, due to the subsequent wars, but on 19 July Liverpool City Council will hold a ceremony to rectify that omission, by making him a posthumous Citizen of Honour for his work. The symbolic importance of these two enormous Liver Birds cannot be overstated. Throughout the city they can be seen perched on their roosts, commanding their territory at the waterfront. Nicholas Montserrat nailed

their crucial role in Liverpool's collective psyche, when in The Cruel Sea, the wartime convoys expressed their relief at returning home after hazardous war time voyages by saying, "Every time I see those Liver Birds, they get bigger and more beautiful." The recent takeover of the Royal Liver Assurance Society by the Royal London is the end of a 150 year era but at least the Royal Liver Building remains as a sentinel at the gateway to the city and the people of Liverpool can remain proud of this majestic monument. NATIONAL LIVERPOOL MUSEUM OPENS The largest newly-built national museum in Britain for more than a century, the new Museum of Liverpool, will open on Tuesday 19 July. One of the world’s leading history museums and a stunning new addition to the city’s famous waterfront, the Museum of Liverpool is the first national museum anywhere in the world that is devoted to the history of a regional city. Demonstrating Liverpool’s extraordinary contribution to the world, it will showcase popular culture and tackle the social, historical and contemporary issues of the city. Professor Phil Redmond CBE, chairman of National Museums Liverpool said: “Liverpool’s waterfront is known the world over, and we are pleased that we will soon be welcoming visitors to what is undoubtedly a stunning addition to that World Heritage Site. “Liverpool’s role in history is also known the world over, as is its iconic symbol, the Liver Bird. It is fitting then that the first purposebuilt museum to examine a city’s role in world history, is opening its doors 100 years to the day that the Liver Building itself opened for business.” Until now, people have found it difficult to grasp the sheer size of the birds that perch on top of what was once the tallest building in Britain. Now visitors to the new Museum in July will be able see for themselves the magnificence of an 18ft life-size Liver Bird, overlooking the Three Graces. Both the Liver Building and Museum of Liverpool are considered cutting edge architectural designs in their own right. The Museum is the newest symbol of Liverpool’s confidence as a great 21st century city.

Fashion

Liverpool Designer

Charlotte Barry

s

he recently took part in the London College of Fashion graduate show, a VIP showcase for 25 collections from over 100 graduating students studying Design and Technology

Where did you love doing work experience? I loved living in Philadelphia for six months where I worked designing prints for Anthropologie. What do you love about your collection? I love the colours, the whole collection is in a golden colour palette and it’s pretty close to how I visualised it which is really satisfying. I love looking at the detailing because I know how much effort went into creating it – I worked for three weeks on a sleeve seam which isn’t even visible but I know it is there – it is bittersweet! I love the literal feeling you have with embroidery and textiles, I love creating beautiful surfaces which encourage touch. What do you love for inspiration? I’m inspired by old things... and then the complete opposite! I love anything overly detailed, or too much for your eyes like Bauhaus, geometric shapes, small things. My collection is based on Pompeii and Herculaneum so my inspiration is a modern perspective on old things. What do you love about designing? I love detail, and when you are designing textiles it is different to the normal designing process, you really need to understand what you are working with. I also love colour, a bad shade can ruin a whole collection. Which designers do you love? I love any textile designers. I love Mulberry, the British heritage and the quirky edge they have. Jonathan Saunders never fails and Philip Lim always displays a tasteful use of embroidery and print textiles.

Themed as HMS Scarisbrick and nautically decorated, the Marquee at this lovely school was fantastic, betting was allowed on the horses via Television links and the Ladies were entertained by the talented children of the school. Christian Audigier Wines provided a fantastic champagne reception and the wines in their trademark fantastic bottles looked stunning. There was a big wheel and helicopter rides for the ladies. ECHO ARENA

THE LOWDOWN... With Promotions Manager, Emma McHarrie

W PROFESSIONAL WIFESTYLE is a discrete company set up to cater for busy wives and partners of professional footballers. Whilst the football clubs provide a liaison officer, the women behind this company, Becky Mellor and Pippa Saunders saw a gap in the market for women accompanying their partners as they relocate due to new job offers. Pippa said, Becky is married to a professional footballer and when she had to move up north from London, she found that there wasn’t a specific agency to help her with advice on choosing schools or nurseries for the children or give advice about the area. We source child friendly days out, electricians, plumbers, beauticians, cleaners and we can even act as a PA, helping with holiday travel plans, parties and event planning for our clients.” Pippa and Becky have been friends since school. Pippa travelled the world with her partner and Becky moved across the UK with her family. Pippa moved to London and became an Executive assistant PA. It gave her and her best friend the idea to set up PWS in February. Pippa, who now lives in the Wirral, said, “We saw a gap in the market and we seized it. We look after people all over the North West, from Greater Manchester to Cheshire, to Merseyside to Lancashire. Already we are being supported by the Professional Footballers Association who use our services, but we want to stress that we aren’t just for footballers wives, we want to help any professional working person. We appreciate that to change cities is a huge upheaval, we can help people adapt. We only work with companies that we have personally vetted so you know you can trust us.”

ell it’s been a busy month at Echo Arena – and it’s set to get busier – just how we like it! Can’t believe we are already 7 months into 2011….time seems to be flying by.

June saw us welcome our 2 millionth visitor to Echo Arena. The lovely Lorraine from Anfield won a Golden Ticket at Radio City Live which was presented to her by Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud. Nicola’s new solo single ‘Beat Of My Drum’ is great…and the lively Radio City Live audience clearly thought so too! Lorraine’s Golden Ticket means that she gets complimentary tickets to 10 shows of her choice – and with the likes of Dolly Parton, Paddy McGuinness, Katy Perry, The Saturdays & Alan Carr to choose from she’ll be spoilt for choice. The countdown has now officially begun for our 3 millionth customer – will it be you?! Alan Carr was up in Liverpool this month to promote his Spexy Beast show which is here in October. He’s such a lovely man – exactly as he appears on the TV – very funny – and super popular too – everyone we met wanted their photo with him. I’m so excited that Chatty Man is back on Channel 4 and can’t wait to see his live show here in the autumn. I’m starting to think that comedy could be the new rock n roll – Echo Arena currently has no less than six different comedians booked in to perform. We’re also looking forward to the annual Summer Pops which starts on 1 July with Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blue Orchestra – we just need some glorious sunshine for the perfect July! Well we can dream can’t we…..

Lulu S o what are you doing at the Eisteddford Festival? I love festivals and this covers all areas over many different eras of music. I am going as “Lulu and Friends”, Kiki Dee is also coming. We are going to be singing and it will be a fabulous night. Do you ever think that you should be slowing down now? Well there are plenty of times when I am sat at home catching up on all my shows on Sky plus. But I still like to be out there. I am having a lot of fun.

How did you cope appearing on Celebrity Juice? Oh Keith Lemon is adorable. I met him of Let’s Dance and he asked me to go on his other show. I am a big fan of Fearne Cotton and Rufus as well, they were all so nice to me. I haven’t watched myself on it yet but it was so funny. Keith Lemon is disgusting, he says some disgusting things…. But I like him, he’s really charming. How did you get into bringing out your own skin care range, Time Bomb? Do you know, I could pinch myself. I never thought for one second that I would have started another business in my 60s. And I sell thousands of products! But the entertainment business is so tough, you have to focus to look good, appearance is so important so I exercise. I had acne as a kid and I take a lot of care over my skin. I educated myself in skin care to try and banish the

How do you feel when people call you a national treasure? Ah it’s very nice, I am part of the wallpaper now. It is definitely something to be proud of. I am proud to be British. I think the Royal wedding helped, it has brought people together. What do you think about the reality talent shows? Well I am totally obsessed by American Idol. The auditions blew my mind. It has to be all about the music rather than all about their family stories. But there is a lot of talent out there and although there are a lot of same old- same old talent shows I am looking forward to the return of the X Factor. Simon Cowell better knocks our socks off! Who is in the media who has caught your eye recently? Well I think Jessie J is very talented. And very grounded too. And there is a guy called Zeus who is a genius songwriter. I have been working with him and he is going to be big, I tell you. What have you got planned for the rest of the year? I am writing a sitcom with a couple of friends which is a lot of fun, but it’s a bit hush hush as we don’t want to jinx it. Plus I am off to the west coast of the States to record an album. And the BBC are producing a 90 minute documentary on me. And of course I will always make time for my lovely granddaughter who is 18 months old. Where is home for you? London of course, although I do love travelling. I am a city girl so I like Europe, in particularly Italy. What was your last memorable trip? I recently went to Cambodia with Elton John’s charity which raises awareness about HIV and aids. I was very moved by what I saw, it was a very sobering experience. At times it was distressing and quite horrific and other times uplifting. These women are looking after children alone while virtually the men either disappear or spend the time getting drunk. So these women are coping with so much with very little support. These women are a great source of strength. Lulu will be appearing at the Llangollen Eisteddfod of Music and Dance 4-11 July

CHESTER SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS 1st – 16th July 2011 www.chesterfestivals.co.uk 0845 241 7868

A

ndrew Cornall the Artistic Director of the Chester Summer Music Festival is busy putting together the final details of the 2011 festival. However, below is a preview of some of the great events we are putting on this year. Chester Summer Music Festival has a strong theme of celebrating the voice and music written for the voice and throughout each year’s festival programme you will find major choral concerts from internationally and nationally known artists. There are many outstanding choral events this year including:

• The Kings Singers making an appearance with their concert entitled “WILL YOU WON’T YOU JOIN THE DANCE?” an entertaining exploration of music inspired by dance over the centuries, from Benjamin Britten’s Choral Dances from “Gloriana” to Gyorgy Ligeti’s The lobster quadrille – 2nd July • A brand new show from Richard Rodney Bennet and Claire Martin called “A COUPLE OF SWELLS” celebrating Richard’s 75th Birthday with classy arrangements including such classics as ‘Let’s face the Music and Dance’, ‘How deep is the Ocean’, ‘What’ll I do?’, ‘Cheek to Cheek’ and ‘Let yourself go’ – 10th July

• Another choral highlight is the Gabrieli Consort joining the festival on Thursday 7th July in the atmospheric surroundings of Chester’s famous cathedral for a spine tingling performance of Bryd’s The Great Mass • Our final big Choral event will be of course the Chester Festival Chorus along with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Closing the festival on July 16, they will be singing Vaughan Williams’ beautiful 5 Tudor Portraits under the baton of John Wilson. The Chester Festival Chorus has a long history and is one of the very few choir’s that exist in this format within festivals.

It is a unique opportunity for amateur singers to work with and perform with national and international professional musicians and as is tradition they will close the festival.

• The BIG SING! our interactive community event returns for its fourth year and is growing in stature and size, so much so it will be spread over the weekend of 2nd-3rd July. Over 22 choirs from across the region descend on Chester city centre and bring the streets alive for an entire weekend. As well as the choral theme which threads through the festival other musicians are featured, including:

• Internationally renowned jazz pianist, Stefano Bollani, will open the festival with a concert in Chester Town Hall’s Assembly Rooms, where he will play his own music in his usual eclectic style. 1st July

• Violinist Ruth Palmer will be continuing the Hidden Acoustics project in Chester with performances in the 11th Century Water Town (located on Chester Walls), the Chester Town Hall and the Chapter House in Chester Cathedral, all stunning locations with stunning acoustics – 12th July From 1st July to July 16th, along with these highlights, other concerts include • Czech violinist, Pavel Šporcl in a programme entitles “Gipsy Way” • The Doric Quartet with pianist, Kathryn Stott • 4 Girls 4 Harps • Jack Liebeck, violinist and winner of the 2010 Classic Brits “Young British Performer of the Year” • Emily Portman Trio • tenThing Brass Ensemble with Tine Thing Helseth • Full Lunch time programme, featuring young up and coming artists • A full community programme • A full education programme introducing Cheshire families to the Suzuki Violin method.

irral business woman and Lifestyle Monthly columnist, Ina Schmidt, has been awarded with the role of Patron of the British Red Cross for Merseyside and Wirral. Having raised over £80,000 for the British Red Cross through her organisation of successful major events; this role recognises her expertise in events management as well as her dedication and invaluable hard work for the British Red Cross. Ina uses her impeccable sense of style, stunning expertise and invaluable professional and personal contacts to ensure that every year the Red Cross Ball becomes larger, more enjoyable and more successful. Her consistent hard work is clearly demonstrated by the increasing amount raised by the Ball each year, with last year’s total reaching more than £35,000! This role is highly regarded and valued by volunteers, staff and the general public across Merseyside and Wirral and has raised the profile of British Red Cross in Wirral. Ina’s work has helped bring local businesses together and brought other Wirral businesses forward which have in turn become sponsors and partners for The Red Cross Ball. By helping the British Red Cross and the 2011 Red Cross Ball, companies are privileged to share Ina’s knowledge and contacts throughout Wirral to help them develop their companies. Alexis Fairclough (Senior Community Fundraiser for Merseyside) says “It is amazing, in such a demanding economic climate to find a company and a person who puts so much time, effort, money and expertise into a charity. Ina Schmidt and European Partner Solutions have demonstrated they are willing to put their own business behind and to support the Red Cross, which Ina has done for the past four years.” Ina is currently organising the annual Red Cross Ball for the fourth year running, which will take place on Saturday 12th November at the Hillbark Hotel, Royden Park. My family was always supporting the Red Cross and when I had the chance to be introduced to the local Fundraising team four years ago I became quickly involved in helping them. The Red Cross is the World’s largest humanitarian organisation helping people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. I have the greatest respect for all the volunteers who are donating so much time and giving so much in this voluntary network. Ina says of this year’s Ball we can expect bigger and better. She said, “This event becomes bigger and more glamourous every year. This year the Ball is on November 12th at Hillbark Hotel and we have a fantastic program with exclusive entertainment. We are very proud to have so many local companies from Cheshire and Merseyside as sponsors. We hope to raise even more money than last year for the British Red Cross. Ina said, “It came as a surprise that I received the honour. It makes no difference to my current support and commitment to the British Red Cross, but it is flattering to be recognised for my achievements. I have definitely increased awareness of The Red Cross Ball here on the Wirral and I have even got some volunteers to help. So I am proud to be part of the British Red Cross. Ina Schmidt runs European Partner Solutions (EPS) , a Wirral based but international working Public Relations and Marketing company with offices in Germany and France. Ina and her team have a strong focus on the IT and Leisure Industry. EPS launches US companies over in Europe, runs PR campaigns and organises events in the UK and Europe. Ina is fluent in German, English and French which is a must if you are involved in the media business in Europe. (www.eu-partner.com) 53
