SLCC ART COMMITTEE: The planning and implementation of the annual President’s Art Show is just one way in which the SLCC Art Committee supports and encourages the arts throughout the college. The committee’s purpose is to advance the college’s art collection in ways that enrich and inspire, engage our students through opportunities for involvement and learning, and connect with the community by creating a platform for artistic dialogue and exchange.

Pat Debenham Mount Timpanogos Photograph $150 Olivia Dawson Swamp Acrylic ink on cold press $175 “‘Swamp’ is part of a larger series manipulating queer women/ non-binary people within flat and simplified spaces. The piece focuses on the gendered expressions of the figure and short-hands the environment in which they exist.

While the contextual elements (background, clothing) are important in reading the identity of the figure, I tend to bring more detail to the face to convey a sense of beauty. The figure’s position, characterization, clothing style and general appearance are heavily influenced by queer expression.”

Meet Me at Sundown Acrylic, spray paint, ink $3,500 “I have developed a process over the last five years of making multiple one-time use, handcut stencils for each painting I make. I draw the entire design by hand with pencil, then I use masking film to mask off certain areas for spray painting. I like to balance my paintings out texturally with flat, matte acrylic paints using brushes while the spray-painted portions are gritty and rough.”

My spouse, Jorge, spent many hours, posing while we chatted and listened to podcasts. By painting from life, a unique relationship is built between myself and my subject. I intend for this to develop a circular connection between artist, subject, and finally the viewer. My work frequently deals with themes of presence and psychological reflection. I often use botanical elements symbolically to remind us of our connection to the planet, and our need to take life at a slower pace.”–Lis Pardoe

2020 PRESIDENT’S ART SHOW OPENING RECEPTION Welcome to the Salt Lake Community College President’s Art Show, an annual juried exhibition sponsored by the College’s Art Committee.

The President’s Art Show celebrates Utah artists and the powerful ways in which art brings people together. Selected from more than 230 submissions, this year’s exhibition showcases a wide range of talented professional and amateur artists using their skills in a variety of media.

Many of the works are for sale; the pieces eligible to be purchased and their respective prices are listed in this program.

The 2020 President’s Art Show awards the following prizes: Best in Show: $1,500 Second Place: $500 Third Place: $500 President’s Award: $1,000 Community Award: $1,000 Dennis Klaus Honorary Award: $500 OPENING RECEPTION In lieu of an in-person opening reception, please view the celebration video and virtual tour at slcc.edu/artshow.

EXHIBITION DATES The 2020 show will be on display from November 5-18. Individuals hoping to view the 2020 President’s Art Show can do so by scheduling an in-person visit or by viewing the virtual tour online.
