Hey Soph, I hope this finds you well and in good spirits, I know that you’re going through a lot of transitions right now, family dynamics changing and a lot of things moving at a pace that you feel you cannot keep up with. Your body is changing, friend groups are changing and you’re struggling to find your place in the world.

“Fitting in” is what seems like the best thing to do but you have so much potential and you’re yet to unlock all of it. Everything that makes you different and the things you’re most insecure about now, are what will make you stand out and bring out your uniqueness in the future. You’re perfect just the way you are and everything you’re going through is aligned with the purpose God has for you. Sometimes it gets wild and you feel like you have to be a certain person in order to be accepted but maybe you need to think of ways to embrace what makes you different.

There are a few things I'd like to share with you that I hope will make your journey a bit smoother. First and foremost, remember that happiness begins within you. It's not something that you'll find outside, but a feeling that you have the power to cultivate from within. I know it can sometimes feel like everyone around you is growing and changing at a rapid pace. Please remember, it's okay to move at your own speed. Be patient with your body and trust that you'll get there in your own time. Also, let me tell you something important: being smart is not only admirable, it's something to embrace and be proud of. Don't shy away from your love for learning and don't be afraid to embrace your "nerdy" side. It's a gift that will take you far.

Something you should keep in your heart always, is that as much as it is important to learn from other people , it is very important to trust in yourself and your decisions .Find a balance between being teachable and being assertive. You don’t always have to please everyone, quite frankly, you won’t manage to. People won’t always understand your goals like you do,but that’s okay .Being you is a gift and it is your superpower. Refrain from comparison as much as you can and focus only on your personal growth and development.

Hey SKY Sisters! If you have always wanted to be a business-savvy boss babe, this article is for you. If you joined us at any of our SKY Fests, you might remember the stall that was all about styling you with denim. Meet the woman behind it!

We s a t down with Zoe Hope Chundam a

A Zambian business woman who got her Honors degree in Business Management and Marketing from the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST) and is now running 2 successful clothing stores (Grab Denim and Grab Clothing) and a logistics company. She also aims to help young girls make informed and effective decisions with their financial resources through her foundation called the “Grab Foundation Zambia”

Zoe loves being an entrepreneur because it's a space of endless growth, learning, and discovery. It's a world with no boundaries where she gets to connect with different people daily and share her knowledge. What truly fuels her passion is the impact she makes on the community through job creation. Being an entrepreneur empowers not only her but also those around her. And to top it all off, she gets to do what she's genuinely passionate about.

The idea for GRAB Clothing, Zoe’s thriving thrift (salaula) store, sparked from a gap she noticed in most clothing stores, especially in the denim section. She wanted to offer people a sustainable and cost-effective shopping experience while simultaneously helping the environment by promoting clothing reuse. Their motto, #Whosaidthriftcantbechic, challenges the stigma surrounding thrifted fashion. Starting her business was surprisingly straightforward. By simply looking into your closet, you might find items that no longer fit. Snap a picture, create a page, and you've got yourself a thrift store!

She pursued a degree in Business Management at the University of Science and Technology in Namibia. When asked about the value of education versus experience in her career, she emphasizes that both are equally valuable and go hand in hand. Education provides a foundation, but it's the real-world experience that truly enhances her entrepreneurial journey.

In the world of entrepreneurship, there's no magic formula or specific qualifications required to start a business. Instead, Zoe emphasizes the importance of certain skills. Thinking on your feet, managing finances, and effective communication are essential, but above all, impeccable customer service is the key.

The best career decision she’s ever made was leaving her previous job to become an entrepreneur. She wanted to pursue something she genuinely enjoyed. Since starting her business, she has successfully explored and monetized her talents. Her only regret is not jumping into entrepreneurship sooner. She wishes she hadn't made excuses and had started earlier.

For SKY girls aspiring to follow in her footsteps, she emphasizes the power of knowledge, recommending studying a business-related course if you plan to attend university. Self-awareness is key to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and align them with your passion. And most importantly, don't hesitate to start; take that first step towards your entrepreneurial dreams.

MY thing

Fashion, Finance, Graphic Design

my thing

Negativity, Procrastination, Dependency

Two quotes that motivate Zoe are: "Nothing will work unless you do," by Mother Teresa, which reminds her that change starts with action, and "Don't let someone else's opinion of you become your reality," by Les Brown, which encourages her to stay true to herself. Zoe draws inspiration from her mother, who, due to her father's health issues, had to take on a significant share of responsibilities. Witnessing her mother's determination and resourcefulness taught her invaluable lessons about what it takes to succeed.

In her downtime, Zoe is currently engrossed in "Wild Embers" by Nikita Gill, a book that emphasizes not comparing oneself and one's journey. She also recommends "The Prettiest, You're Not a Member" by Brigit Young to teen girls seeking inspiration.

To improve career prospects, she suggests getting creative by finding a unique market gap. Seek a mentor if possible; their guidance can be invaluable. Additionally, volunteer work is an excellent way to network and enhance your skill set.

Zoe’s an active member of SHE Entrepreneurship and KUPES Young Women's Network, connecting with fellow entrepreneurs and like-minded individuals.

Her journey from student to thriving businesswoman is an inspiration for teen girls who aspire to make a mark in the business world. She reminds us that with the right mix of passion, knowledge, and determination, anyone can turn their dreams into reality. So, what are you waiting for? It's time to grab hold of your dreams and start your own entrepreneurial adventure!

Keep up with Ms. Chundama: @Grab.zm @Grab.thriftzm @Grab_logistics.zm @Grab_foundation.zm

First things first, the moment that made my heart skip a beat was winning a competition! I couldn't believe it. I saw the competition on Facebook and it required us to upload pictures of ourselves in our traditional outfit. The winner would be chosen by the number of likes on their photo. It sounded like a fun challenge, so I decided to give it a shot. Winning the competition meant the world to me. Becoming a model is my ultimate dream, so this victory felt like a big step in the right direction.

The photo shoot was sooo fun. I learned so much about modeling that I didn't know before. I got the chance to interact and work with new people. We laughed, we danced, and most importantly, I made new friends.

The Luvales, to whom I belong, trace their roots back to Mwatayamvwa's Kingdom in the Democratic Republic of Congo and eventually found their home in the northwestern region of Zambia. Our revered chief is Ndungu, and you can also find some of our fellow Luvale community members residing in Luyi Village within the Western Province, specifically in Senanga.

What I love most about my tribe is its rich culture and the values it instills in the young ones. For example, we celebrate the Wali ceremony which occurs when a girl begins her first menstruation cycle. She is taken into seclusion where she remains until the period of guidance and teaching is over. The teachings include chores, hygiene and marriage. The period of seclusion would last four to six months previously but nowadays they last in some cases only one month or one week. And because early marriages are illegal, the initiation ceremony happens later in a woman's life.

And we also have the Likumbi Lyamize it’s a vibrant Luvale tradition filled with mesmerizing dances performed by the Makishi, male dancers, and the girls who've completed the initiation ceremony. These dances and songs beautifully showcase our culture's traditional teachings, skills, and cherished values.

To my fellow SKY Girls, remember to always stay true to yourselves.

Masembe (maize grits)

Mealie meal or millet meal

Munkoyo sticks (selected tree roots)

Water

All these ingredients can be purchased at your local market, particularly Soweto market.

ThE StEp-By-StEp GuIdE:

Boil That Water: Next, put a pot on the stove or on an mbaula, and let it come to a rolling boil. We're heating things up, folks!

Wash Those Masembe: First things first, give your masembe a good rinse. Cleanliness is key!

Mix It Up: Take your washed masembe and mix them to a paste with a smidge of mealie meal or millet – the choice is yours, depending on your taste buds. Now, toss this mixture into the bubbling water.

Stir Away: Keep that wooden spoon handy and stir like a champ until your mixture becomes delightfully thick. Let it simmer away for a while.

Roots in Water: While you're waiting for the magic to happen, dunk those munkoyo roots into a jug of water for a few minutes. They're in for a refreshing soak!

Cool and Add: Once your mealie meal and masembe blend is all thick and gooey, remove it from the heat source and let it cool off for around 20-30 minutes.

Roots in the Mix: Now, add those munkoyo roots (with the water they soaked in) to your cool mixture and give it a good stir. We're building up the flavor here!

Let It Ferment: The magic doesn't happen overnight, but close! Leave your Chibwantu to sit overnight and ferment. This is the secret sauce to that delicious taste we all crave.

Serving Time: When you're ready to savor the fruits of your labor, you can enjoy your Chibwantu either chilled or warm. Add a touch of sugar or even honey for that extra sweetness if you like.

And there you have it my friends – the secret to crafting your very own tongue tingling traditional Chibwantu drink Cheers to delicious homemade delights

Embracing Independence

Celebrating

Individuality:

W h a t Ma kes

Yo u, Yo u!

The School Mosaic:

Imagine your school as a vibrant mosaic, and each student is a colourful tile. Some tiles may be bright and shine in academics, while others dazzle on the sports field. You might be the student who excels in drama, and that's your unique tile. Just like the mosaic wouldn't be complete without all its tiles, your school experience wouldn't be the same without your unique contributions.

The Blank Canvas of Your Dreams:

Life is like a blank canvas, and you're the artist with a vision. Maybe you dream of being a scientist, a painter, or a gamer even if others don't see it yet. That's your unique brushstroke on the canvas of life. Remember, some of the most ground-breaking ideas were once seen as crazy dreams until someone turned them into reality.

Dancing to Your Own Beat:

Picture a school dance where everyone is dancing to their own rhythm. You might be the one grooving to old school beats while everyone else is into Amapiano, and that's perfectly okay! Your individuality is what adds flavour and excitement to the dance of life.

Remember,

your uniqueness is your superpower, whether you're in school, with friends, or making life choices. It's what sets you apart in a world full of extraordinary individuals. Your unique tile in the school mosaic, your puzzle piece in your friendship group, and your brushstroke on the canvas of life—all of these make you who you are.

Hey there SKY besties

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like the odd one out in your school or among your friends Well guess what That feeling of being unique and standing out is actually a wonderful thing Let s dive into what makes us uniquely us with some examples

Friendship Puzzle Pieces:

Think of your friendship group as a puzzle. Each friend is a different piece with their quirks and personalities. Maybe you're the puzzle piece that loves organising epic movie nights, and your bestie is the puzzle piece known for their epic pranks. Together, you create a friendship picture that's uniquely yours. Embrace those differences because they're what make your group exciting and fun.

Choosing Your Path:

When it comes to deciding what you want for yourself, it's like choosing your path in a forest. Your family, friends, and society might suggest certain routes, but you're the one walking the path. Maybe you want to explore a less conventional career or take a gap year to work. It's your journey and listening to your heart is what makes you unique. Trust your inner compass.

The Book of Your Story:

Think of your life as a book with chapters. Each chapter represents a different phase, adventure, or challenge. Your uniqueness shines through the pages as your story unfolds. Whether it's the chapter where you stood up for a cause you believe in or the one where you overcame a fear, those are the chapters that make your book an exciting read.

Your story is a masterpiece! You're the author, artist, and composer of your life's journey, and your uniqueness is the magical ingredient that makes it extraordinary. So, celebrate it, share it, and let it guide you on your amazing adventure!

Hi SKY my friend has been feeling peer pressured to get whatever is trending but she doesn t have money she s started vexing and becoming rude cause of that fact how can I help her

It's awesome that you want to help your friend in this situation. Start by having an open and non-judgmental conversation, asking her how she's feeling and letting her vent. Sometimes, just talking about the pressure can relieve some of it. Suggest fun, low-cost activities or hobbies you both can enjoy together to show her that trendy things aren't the only path to happiness. Help her understand that it's okay to be herself; share stories about famous people who came from humble backgrounds but achieved greatness through their uniqueness. You can be her biggest cheerleader! If she's interested, you could even help her learn about saving money and start a "saving challenge" together to watch your savings grow, and if after saving, she still wants to buy those things, great! But she might also see that the trend has passed and she saved herself losing money instead.

Lastly, if her rudeness affects your friendship, calmly let her know how her behaviour makes you feel. It's important to maintain healthy boundaries. Remember, your support and friendship mean a lot. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make a big difference. Keep being an awesome friend!

My friend has started having sex with her boyfriend

She knows it s wrong but doesn t see a problem with it how should I advise her in a non judgement way

Approaching a sensitive topic like this requires empathy and care. Begin by having a private, non-confrontational conversation with your friend. Let her know that you care about her well-being and want to understand her perspective. As she shares her feelings and thoughts, listen attentively without interruption, even if you disagree with her choices.

Gently inquire about her reasons for her actions and try to grasp her motivations and feelings without judgement. Express your concerns for her emotional and physical well-being and the potential consequences of her actions, emphasizing that your intention is to support her, not to judge her. Offer sites and ways they can learn more information about safe sex practices, the importance of consent, and the complexities of emotional relationships that can arise from such situations. Share resources where she can learn more.

Respect her autonomy and choices, reinforcing that you respect her no matter what. Let her know that you're there for her, whether she seeks help, advice, or just a listening ear. Your role is to be a caring and supportive friend, creating a safe space for her to share her thoughts and feelings.

How do I deal with divorced parents

Dealing with divorced parents can be tough, but you can navigate it with strength and resilience. Keep the lines of communication open with both parents, sharing your feelings and concerns. Avoid taking sides or blaming one parent; they each have their own story. Seek emotional support from friends, family, or a trusted adult who can provide perspective and comfort. Remember, divorce is not your fault; it's a decision made by adults. Politely but firmly set boundaries if your parents involve you in conflicts.

How do I reject a guy without being rude or mean so that he doesn t react badly

Especially if I m alone maybe walking from school and I m scared to refuse

Prioritise self-care by engaging in activities you enjoy and seeking professional help if needed. Healing takes time, so be patient with yourself, and focus on your personal growth and future goals. You're not alone in facing this challenge, and many have emerged from it even stronger. It's about balancing healthy relationships with both parents while taking care of your well-being.

Rejecting someone while being respectful and considerate of their feelings is important. If you're alone and concerned about the person's reaction, avoid answering unless you can get to a crowded place and give an answer where you feel safe. You can also look for an adult or authority figure to help you get home safely. And if you can, walk home in pairs or groups until you know that the guy is no longer interested in you.

If you feel safe enough to answer it's best to be direct yet gentle. Politely but firmly express that you're not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship, using "I" statements to frame it in terms of your own feelings. Avoid blame or criticism and show empathy by acknowledging that it might be disappointing for them. If you genuinely like the person as a friend, you can suggest maintaining a friendship.

Stay calm and confident during the conversation. Trust your instincts; if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, prioritize your safety and consider walking away or seeking help from a trusted adult or authority figure if necessary. Your well-being should always come first, and setting boundaries is entirely within your right.

How do I deal with the stress of dieting

I ve started eating less to become slim and I ve become very depressed and now have a bad relationship with food how can I change this

I'm really sorry to hear that you're experiencing stress and a negative relationship with food and body image. Your well-being is the top priority. It's crucial to shift your focus from extreme dieting to adopting a healthy lifestyle. If possible speak to your school counsellor or seek professional help from a therapist or dietitian who specialises in eating disorders and body image issues. They can provide tailored guidance and support. Challenge negative thoughts, establish healthy habits, and embrace self-compassion.

Surround yourself with positive influences, limit exposure to triggering content, and confide in a trusted friend or family member. Set realistic, non-appearance-focused goals, and remember that recovery takes time. You deserve a positive relationship with food and your body, and there are people willing to help you achieve that.
