What is SKY?

SKY is a sisterhood of teenage girls all across Botswana that supports, empowers, and celebrates being true to ourselves. Becoming a SKY girl means taking the pledge to define your Sures (things you love) and Shapos (things you don’t need in your life).

What sets SKY girls apart? We are not swayed by peer pressure, instead, we make choices that are true to ourselves and we stick to them. Whatever our Sures and Shapos are, we stand by them, because those choices define us, and make each one of us unique. To become a SKY Girl you need to take the pledge and live by it.

Hair Me Out!

Hair product review by Boleng Sanji Mmopi

Do you think you could manage your hair without hair products? African hair has always been a part of our identity. After so many years of weaves and artificial hair care products, many Africans are going back to their roots (pun intended). We see more and more girls and women keep their natural hair and do their best to nurture and care for it. Mme kana natural hair can be expensive to maintain especially without access to high quality and affordable products.

Seal It Up by Aunt Jackie’s P69.95

This is a well-known brand. A blend of shea butter, flaxseed, avocado, castor oil and honey. Y’all know Aunt Jackie’s products holding us down ouchea in the streets. Just ask Laikag6 who featured on The Mix Season 2, talking about detangling those knots and keeping your hair moisturised. Pros: • Relatively affordable • Excellent hydrating butter

Cons: • May be too heavy for hair as it’s a butter (especially if you have low porosity hair) • Can be a bit greasy if oils are applied on hair after it

P39.95

An edge control/gel for those baby hairs we love. Whether you have natural or relaxed hair, those edges gotta be bomb. Sometimes our hairlines ain’t it and we need some hair tips to look on point – lay those edges boo. Get yourself an edge smoothing gel and just practise to see what you like.

A moisture intensive leave-in conditioner. Conditioning your hair helps keep your hair healthy and shiny. If you don’t condition your hair, it easily breaks. Let’s not skip any steps in our hair care routines ladies yoh! Aunt Jackie’s making another appearance with their conditioner ke yone Quench. • •

Isn’t greasy Softens hair

Pros: • Non-greasy • Can be used on all hair types (relaxed and natural hair too) • Good for parting hair • Non-flaky • Can be used while styling • Thick Cons: • Can melt in the sun • Needs to be secured with a scarf for about 10-15 minutes after use to ensure that your hair stays in place.

Quench by Aunt Jackie’s

Today we have a wide array of hair products such as gels, hair food and leave-in conditioners at our disposal. It’s very important to take care of your hair, not only gore o lebege but also to keep it healthy. We also have hair goals we want to reach (such as longer hair) so it’s vital to get the right hair products. I’ve taken the liberty of testing out 8 hair products to help you avoid pouring your money down the drain.

P9.95

Hair food to feed your hair, I know that’s right! Coconut super hair food has a good ring to it because of the coconut part of it. But this coconut hair food is TOO coconutty, the smell is intense yoh. Plus it’s very greasy. Unfortunately this one did not live up to my expectations.

Cons: • Very runny

*All prices from Dynamic Cash & Carry

Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day

Pros: • Has a strong coconut smell • Good for basing/ oiling the scalp • Can be used to protect scalp when relaxing/texturising hair Cons: • Oily and greasy • Clogs pores • Strong scent (may be annoying if you don’t like the smell of coconut)

Olive Oil Moisturizer Toner by Naturel

4.5 10

P24.95 Moisturising hair helps restore the oils that could’ve been washed out while washing using shampoos and other products. Just like you apply lotion on your skin after a bath, it’s good to moisturise your hair after washing it. There are lots of good oil moisturisers out there but I found this one left my hair a bit dry afterwards.

Pros: • Has a bit of slip • Adds shine • Creamy texture

Short natural hair Thuso Mbedu

Cons: • Odd smell (smells chemically) • Oily • Leaves hair dry after it dries

Boity - Own Your Throne This one is a personal hype song of mine, it’s from Boity’s debut album 4436. I think since listening to the complete album it’s given me a whole new level of respect for Boity because it’s really shown me that YOU have superpowers within yourself as a woman. She has grown in so many facets of her professional life, and I have loved seeing her reach a point of success where no one can bring her down. This track speaks to waking up and getting your money. It’s the song I listen to on my way to gigs, on my way to work and right after I’m done doing a stellar job. I resonate so much with it. Shekhinah - Beautiful A beautiful reminder that’s affirming my beauty and that love lives right within me. However, it’s open to whatever interpretation because we are all different and have different messages that we may learn from songs. Nonetheless, according to my interpretation, this song is about a girl who was in love with someone who never validated her and affirmed her, until she finally found the courage to leave. At the end, she understands that she’s never needed that validation from someone else because the only person that could tell her she’s beautiful was herself. It also has a little bit of an upbeat, so the storytelling in it isn’t all that sad. It’s like watching a sad movie with a happy ending. Caliba ft. Zuziwe Mavuma – Lephirimile This is such a feelgood song talking about moving on after a very toxic relationship. Zuziwe’s beautiful voice is the cherry on top with this one. It’s a Setswana song, and the message is very simple - move on when you’re not wanted, appreciated or loved. The production is amazing and you could dance to it while you’re singing “rwala hutshe, leba Bophirima tsatsi, lerato la rona le phirimile.” Mpho Sebina - Where You Belong We can all agree how gruesome this year has been, especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic. I know it might be an emotionally sad song but the reason why it’s on my list of the hottest songs is because of how real it is. As we all know, this virus has claimed the lives of people that we’ll always love. We all have to cope with these losses and this song is truly a source of comfort. DJ La Prie & Names ft. Nessa, La-Tonde, Mosako and Girly - Dominator This song ya ndominator! I simply can’t get enough of it. It’s a newly released single, proudly from our country’s best in the amapiano music scene. It’s the perfect festive banger and mood activator!

Twisted Butterfly & Veezo View - Personal The perfect R&B sound, made locally. It gives me summertime vibes, pool side chilling with my girls enjoying the sun tan, and having laughs on a sunny Saturday. The balance between vocals, the beat, and Veezo’s verse is the cherry on top. I’m definitely stanning Twisted Butterfly, and wishing her all the best with her journey and music career. She needs to be heard and supported. UPZ ft DKP- Pure Surprise This is an oldie but a forever goldie. Soulful house music at its best. It’s a timeless hit, which takes me back to the karaoke days with my cousin Sedi. We still love it so much and for me it’s one of those songs that’ll never ever get old. Wizkid ft Temz & Justin Bieber - Essence (Remix) Afrobeats just got better with this song. R&B mashed with Afrobeats? I don’t think anyone saw this one coming. It’s soothing but will also have you on your feet with one of Wizkid’s best albums, Made in Lagos, which in its whole entirety is a gem of an album. Sinach - I Know Who I Am When in doubt, plug in some praise and worship music. This song is my reaffirmation whenever I’m battling anxiety issues. It reminds me of who I am in God’s image. It’s like God whispering to me to dust my worries off & hold my head up like the Queen I am, walking in His path for me. Lloyd BW ft Kali Mija – Don’t Go (Chronical Deep Remix) This is undoubtedly one of the best productions I’ve heard from Botswana. It’s a true testament that our talent is export material and deserves to be heard by the world. Kali Mija’s vocals are so soothing, so smooth, she literally would make you wanna cry listening to Don’t Go. What an amazing song!

Health & beauty tips to help you stay fresh in the heat

Are you a summer or winter babe? It’s a controversial topic! But whether o sure kana o shapo ka summer, these top tips will help you feel fresh and icy cool all summer long… Hydration nation

SPF is our BFF

Even though our melanin stays popping, the sun’s strong rays can still harm our skin, especially between November and February. Skin can burn and peel off, or it can get raised bumps called a ‘heat rash’. Gape, too much direct sun can even affect our brains, leaving us feeling exhausted and unwell. Using sunblock will make this much better, so if possible get hold of some o itshase ha o batla go tswa this summer during the hottest hours of the day. But sunblock is expensive so if you can’t get your hands on any don’t worry! Sunblock is literally anything that BLOCKS the SUN from reaching you, and physical things are just as effective – so a wide hat, an umbrella or sitting in the shade will protect you just as well!

Keep it natural

Summer is the time to keep things natural. Heavy makeup will melt off and feel uncomfortable on hot skin, so if you’re a makeup fan, now is the time to apply only the lightest touch – maybe a tinted moisturiser and lip gloss only. You will look cool and breezy, and your skin will thank you for not clogging it up.

If we told you there’s a product that is proven to give you clearer skin, clear toxins from your body, make you feel great and help you live longer… how much would you pay for it? Quite a lot right? Well that product is water and it’s free, so get drinking! Find yourself a decent water bottle at least 750ml in size and carry it with you wherever you go, topping it up along the way. Remember to drink at least 2 litres of water a day and even more when it’s hot. Water is bomb as a drink but it can also be used to cool our skin down (without requiring a whole swimming pool…) Dipping your wrists into water has an instant cooling effect because it cools your blood down – the veins at your wrists are closest to the surface so go motlhofo go chila. Or, apply a cloth soaked in water to the back of your neck and leave it there to do its work.

It’s also the time to wear natural fabrics. Check the label on your clothes – if it says cotton, linen, rayon or viscose, tse ke tsone di natural fabrics and great for summer because they let air through and allow your body’s heat to escape. If it says polyester, acrylic or nylon, those are synthetic fabrics (made from plastic fibres) and they’re not good for summer. They trap your body’s heat and make you feel hot and bothered. Fun fact: those second-hand clothes stalls often sell good quality clothes made from natural fabrics – check the labels and bag yourself some cute cotton dresses and shirts to pair with sandals for a breezy feel.

Nearly three percent of the ice in Antarctic glaciers is penguin urine

No sweat!

When it’s hot, our bodies sweat to help cool us down - it’s natural! But after a few hours, sweat starts to smell bad and that is what leads to unpleasant body odours. The product called ‘deodorant’ only covers up the smell by adding a different smell on top, so it’s not ideal. Make sure to use a product called ‘anti-perspirant’ – this product actually stops your armpits from creating sweat when it is applied, meaning that the bad smell doesn’t happen in the first place. We also love making a homemade spritz – find a small spray bottle and fill it with water and a few drops of an essential oil or another scent (for example rosewater). Throughout the day if you’re hot and in need of a refresh just spray a few spritzes of the scented water onto your neck and arms. It will cool you down and you’ll smell great!

Skincare switch-up

The weather in Botswana ke drama queen – remember that cold dry skin from a few months back? Now the sun is beating down and burning us. Go mogote shem. Our skin has to cope with extremes, yoh! When summer arrives, it’s time to switch up our skincare routine. Put away the thick cream that was so great in winter, and swap it for a light moisturiser or even a gel. Also, if you have naturally oily skin, instead of applying lotion all over your face, you can concentrate only on the driest areas and leave the rest natural. On your face, the dry areas are everywhere except your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin, shaped like the letter ‘T’).

Our Top 10 Summer Essentials Make sure to pack a cute summer bag full of hot season essentials! 1.

2.

Thin cotton scarf A large thin cotton scarf can be used as sun protection, as a head wrap, even as a wraparound dress – the possibilities are endless. Find one with a pretty pattern that folds up small and keep it in your handbag for whatever you might need. Umbrella An umbrella is a lifesaver if you have to walk a long distance, so it’s worth finding a good one. They have cute ones at Mr Price right now, or alternatively opt for a practical one that folds small enough for any handbag. Scientifically, the best colour for blocking the sun is black, but any colour or pattern will do.

3.

Tissue If that combi ride has got you feeling like a sweaty mess, a small packet of tissue can help you feel good again. Just blot the tissue gently around your face and neck to remove sweat and oil.

4. Cotton face mask These days we’re wearing a whole extra layer of clothing – our face masks. They can be made out of any fabric but just like clothes, natural fabrics are better. They prevent Covid better and they’re better for your skin. Top tip: make a long cotton dress shorter, and use the spare fabric to make a matching face mask. You will look too cute!

5.

6.

White T-shirt You can’t go wrong with a white T-shirt. It goes with everything, it suits everyone and it’s great for summer. If your plain white tee is old and starting to fade, soak it in a bucket containing 3 litres of cold water and 1 tablespoon of bleach, for 10 minutes before washing. Good as new! Summer snacks In the summer evenings re bata braainyana but in the daytime we love crunchy, fresh and cool things. Try a salad made from cucumber, watermelon, mint leaves and feta for the ultimate cooling snack. Or for an easier summer snack, just grab a Cool-Time!

7.

Sunglasses Sunglasses are both useful AND stylish, so obviously they’re our best friend in summertime. Right now so many different sunglasses styles are in fashion – slimline, oversized, square, round - so whichever you choose, you’ll look on trend.

9.

Great toes Speaking of feet, summer is the time when we get ours out. So we like to make sure they’re looking great by giving ourselves a home pedicure. Spend some time grooming your feet and painting your toenails at least once a month throughout the summer.

8.

Flip flops This is another Y2K trend that’s back in a big way. Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid are both flip flop fans, and so are we. They’re cheap and versatile, and can be paired with almost anything while keeping our feet cool.

10. Minispeaker Nothing says Dezemba like music playing in the streets. Re sure ka our SKYbranded mini-speaker for creating a whole vibe and letting us listen to the SKY Anthem over and over *o mookodi ma weeee* For the chance to win your own SKY minispeaker, head to our socials – we’ll be giving some away this festive!

RAFIWA Isago Molefe

MINKIE Tshegofatso Monyika Sure Ka Rafiwa is a family TV Sitcom set in Botswana. Rafiwa is a 15-year-old daydreamer and the world is her playground. She moves in with her aunt, uncle, cousins and grandmother when her mother has to handle a big court case outside of town. Being a single mother, she decided to leave Rafiwa with her extended family. Rafiwa moves to a new home, and a new school where her life is turned into chaos—or rather, she turns everyone’s lives chaotic! She’s full of life, overzealous, well intentioned, but a whole mess.

SENEO Arona Masoso

We meet her cousins Seneo, the total opposite of Rafiwa who’s focused, organised, and calm. Tsotso, the baby of the house who surely loves her food, Obakeng, the older cousin who’s a bit oblivious, her Uncle Bogosi (a farmer), seamstress slash fashion designer Aunt Grace, her school crush Boleng, strict teacher Mr. Modise, and finally, her new bestie and partner in crime, Minkie. Season 1 has been a blast to produce. From behind the scenes to the cast in front of the camera and also producing the theme tune! We can’t wait for everyone to see this show and enjoy it. Now it’s time to meet the cast of Sure Ka Rafiwa!

The Peculiar Visit

School has been draining lately. I am hopeless, my world is moving too fast for me. The fear of failure is too powerful, I cannot handle it tota! This morning Todoroki has been acting weird, I should probably take him to the vet tomorrow. Ouch, that hurts! I felt a scratch on my face. “Finally, sleeping beauty has woken up,” a voice said. Slowly standing up on my bed grabbing a pillow, I looked around like a warrior being ambushed by a caveman. “Who said that?” I asked. “Hellooo! Rorisang down here,” the voice continued. I looked down and what did I see? Katse yame!! Waving his paw at me. I stood there staring at him as if he had grown nine tails, now that would be a

sight to see. The thought of my cat talking totally sounded crazy, and my only choice was to laugh it off. “Well it is good that you find this humorous, for a second there I thought you were going to faint on me,” the cat said. “Wait, you can talk!” I screamed. “Of course, it is real Rorisang have a look,” he said pointing at my arm. Three claw marks were visible where he had scratched me. “You scratched me,” I yelled, rubbing the wound. “What was I to do, you wouldn’t wake up and I licked you all over,” he said jumping on my dressing table gracefully. I slowly stepped down from the bed and approached him. “Todoroki!” I quietly called out in disbelief. Was I really having a conversation with the

19 four legged creature that followed me everywhere, including the toilet? I thought to myself. “OK Rorisang bona, take a seat,” he said and I obediently did. “You see you are a good pet owner, you feed me, let me chew your brother’s tooth brush and even groom me. But you are totally ignorant. It has been 2 weeks since I stayed here and you didn’t even check my gender before naming me,” he said, practically yelling the last part. When he said that I gazed into his neon eyes then to his chest, tiny cat breasts protruded from the fur. “Neptune’s galaxies! Have those always been there?” I asked shocked. “Yes they have been!” she sassily replied. “Secondly child, you snore and drool at the same time. How is that even possible?” I quickly wiped my mouth and cheeks feeling a little bit embarrassed and stuck my tongue out at her. Todo looked at me “I’ll claw your face off child,” she said literally showing her claws to me. I gulped. “Your grandfathers want to talk to you,” she continued. “My grandfathers? What are you? A spirit guide?” “Ha, funny. Not going to answer that.” From my mirror, two blue lights shone out, almost blinding me, and my mouth dropped in awe. Todo looked at me shocked, “What?” I asked her. “You went into karate mode on me when I talked to you earlier and you aren’t afraid of this?” she said sarcastically. “This is what I call a grand entrance, and your entrance left me with scars” I said lifting my arm. “Yeah, yeah keep on whining you are such a baby, you will be OK,” she replied yawning. Heavens have mercy, I’ll seriously flush this cat down the toilet. “By the way is this why you have been meowing weirdly at the mirror this morning?” I asked. “Maybe” she replied, casually jumping from my lap to the bed. The stars began to take form and two old men appeared, one was tall and wore an elegant black and white checkered suit. The other looked a lot like mom with a prominent nose and sharp jawline that could easily cut an apple.

Suddenly the other one burst into fits of laughter. “Ke gore ware a seka a tshoga, o ka tlhoka yang ka a tall man okare pipeline a mmuisa fagare ga room, bona jaaka ngwana ngwanake a go lebile o tloga a ithoba molala,” the other man said laughing. When I heard that I joined in the laughter too, and I instantly knew he was my mom’s dad. My other grandfather looked at him coldly like the grim reaper but I could see a smile twitching at the ends of his mouth. They looked like they got along well. “Child, you are not alone. We know you are worried about the expectations our families have for you and I know you can overcome anything. Do tell that son of mine to pay me a visit,” instructed my paternal grandfather before disappearing. “You look like your mom waitse and I know you will put up a fight just like she always does. Be brave Rorisang, take your stand and let our lineage hear your voice. Harness the butterflies. You fell into power and remember our family always has you.” “Rorisang!! Rorisang, if you don’t get up this moment o isa katse eo at the vet o le nosi!!” My mom yelled out. Her voice literally vibrated within the walls of the house, sometimes bringing life and sometimes giving me a migraine like today. “Ee mama ke etla!” I shouted back rolling down on the floor from my bed. My eyes landed on Todo, she stood by the door like an Egyptian royal cat. “Wait, she?” I bolted towards her and picked her up to confirm. She was a girl, it really happened. Todo stood there and meowed at me then at the mirror. Like seriously what happened to last night’s love. I removed the red feathered scarf from the corner of the mirror and gave it to her; she happily took it and ran off. The scar on my arm was no longer there, it was quite confusing; perhaps the Halloween movies had finally got to me. For some reason I was relieved, does this mean we are not alone in this world?

“Rorisang!” the tall man called out. “Yes!” I quickly replied. My heart was beating so fast. “Don’t be

We receive so many questions in our inbox, girls dealing with mathata a mantsi. We’re here to help. Check out this article that features some of the most frequently asked ‘what to do if’ questions… in case you find yourself in the same situation. We got you!

What to do if my friends are distracting me from studying? It’s all about balance. Schedule your time. You should have a timetable that includes everything on it to make sure you balance your life well. Create a time for studying, for resting, for extra-curricular activities, and for hanging out with friends. If you are a night owl, make sure you stay away from your phone for at least 2 hours every evening to focus on just studying. This way you’ll be able to hang out or chill with your friends motshegare. On weekends, do the same, have a strict schedule and just take it one day at a time. Discipline yourself. Remember, you’re only cheating yourself if you don’t follow your schedule. If your friends keep pushing you to do other things, find a study group that will help you focus. 1. Write down your own goals. Seeing your goals every day posted on a wall will be a good reminder to stick to them. If you write them down somewhere hidden, it’s easy to lose the vision and never reach your goals. 2. Create a timetable. Your timetable helps you create a habit that is beneficial to your studies. Once your brain and your body get used to the timetable it gets easier every time you do a task scheduled. Remember, the more you follow your timetable, the easier it gets. 3. Identify students in your class or school that have the same vision as you. Find a buddy that has the same determination as you to study. Help them stick to their own timetable and they help you stick to yours. Sometimes you can even study together just to stay motivated by each other. 4. Stand your ground with your friends. If you have friends that you don’t wanna part with, make sure they understand your goals and have them know you’re not abandoning them. If they are true friends they will understand and not threaten to stop being friends with you. Then communicate with them when you can spend time with them.

An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain

What to do if my boyfriend pressures me to have sex? If anyone pressures you to do anything you do not want to do, then they don’t respect you and your boundaries. They don’t have your best interest at heart. It means what they’re asking is out of selfishness. Make sure you stand your ground and stay true to what you’re sure about and shapo with. If they break up with you or threaten to break up with you because you’re saying no, then let them go. It’s OK to not have a boyfriend, especially if that person is not going to respect your choices, they’re not worth you sacrificing your happiness. If your friends tell you gore bone they said yes, it doesn’t mean you should too. 1. Assert your sures and shapos early on. Once you know yourself, what you want and what you don’t want in life, it’s not easy for anyone to try make you do things you don’t want. Remember, once you do something you don’t want to do, you can’t take it back. It’s OK to wait until you’re sure, ready, and more knowledgeable. Make sure to stand your ground. 2. Identify potential red flags with other things you say you want or don’t want. When you have a boyfriend and he constantly wants you to do the things he likes but never what you like, that can give you clues that he’s the only one that matters in the relationship. Using manipulation tactics like telling you he loves you just so that you agree to do something is a red flag. Make sure you recognise those early on, before you’re in too deep. 3. Practice open communication to speak your mind. Right from the start and throughout the relationship, make sure you have a safe environment to speak freely about the things you want and the things you don’t want. Put those out in the open so that you’re not misunderstood. Find out his sures and shapos also to make sure you’re on the same page. 4. Surround yourself with friends that understand what you want and don’t try to persuade you to try what you don’t want. It’s true that the people you keep around you will be the most influential in your life. Because they are your friends you tend to trust their opinions more. However, it doesn’t mean they all have your best interests at heart. No matter how much you love your friends, make sure you know and understand yourself to not be pressured to do things you don’t want to do and they should still love you. Friends don’t always have to do the same things.

What to do if I’m considering

21

trying smoking?

What to do if I’m insecure about my body and my skin? One thing you should know is that this is you and you’re the only you that exists. Your height, your body, your skin, belong to you and you are perfect just the way you are. Beauty standards out there are ridiculous and most times discriminatory and unrealistic. They also change all the time. Right now, you’re at an age where you’re still growing, still becoming, so love yourself in the skin you have because you can’t have another one. Remember that many people you see on TV and social media have lots of money and can afford expensive products, but this is not normal. They often wear makeup all the time, and a lot of them edit their photos. Don’t change yourself to look like something you’re not. It’s not worth it. There are people out there that will love you as you are. 1. Write down self-affirmations and read them aloud to yourself every morning. Self-affirmations boost confidence, they help you love yourself for who you are, they help you to understand that you are you and no one else can be you. Read them to yourself, believe them, and walk the talk. 2. Practice self-care. Self-care not only helps you look good; it also makes you feel good. Beauty isn’t just the way you look but what’s on the inside too. Self-care isn’t just the costly things like doing facials or going for a massage, but things like drinking lots of water every day, reducing fatty foods in your meals, washing your bedding regularly, staying active. All of these will help you stay healthy and feel good in your skin. 3. Surround yourself with friends that don’t impose their beauty standards on you. Friends that bring out your insecurities are not good friends—the ones that perpetuate European standards of beauty and hold everyone around them to those standards. Make sure you don’t internalise any negative opinions of people that only bring you down. 4. Love yourself just the way you are. You’re the only you in the world. Embrace that and flourish. Practise self-love, self-care, and self-acceptance. That way, no one can bring you down. Being smart, kind, confident, driven, is beautiful. Work more on that than just what you see on the outside. The energy you put out in the world creates your beauty and people will feel it.

Being a teenager is interesting because it’s a time where we get to test things out, work out what we like and what we don’t like, and basically experiment a bit! And that’s usually fine. But there are some things that are not worth experimenting with, even once – and one of those things is smoking. Nicotine (a chemical that is inside cigarettes, vapes and hubbly) is super addictive – it’s even more addictive than many illegal drugs. And 2 out of every 3 smokers will die from a smoking-related disease – that’s so sad! Re sure ka having a beautiful life, re shapo ka dying from preventable causes. Curiosity is understandable but trust us – there is nothing good about smoking, at all.

1. Remember your worth. You are valuable, beautiful and powerful. Your life and your body are worth a lot. Look after yourself, treasure yourself and promise yourself every day that you will protect, nourish and respect your body because it’s the only one you have! 2. Consider everything you put inside your body. Some SKY Girls have told us they didn’t know that hubbly also contains tobacco – it does! Smoking hubbly is the same as smoking a cigarette, it is harmful and addictive. Don’t be deceived by people trying to sell or rent one to you, who might say it’s ‘just flavour.’ 3. Know that you have the right to say ‘no thanks’. To anything you don’t want in your life – including smoking. Trust us, no one will judge you or think any less of you for politely saying no. They will just respect your decision and get on with their life. It’s your life, so you make the decisions! 4. Define your Sures and Shapos. Knowing what you want (sure ka yone) and what you don’t want (shapo ka yone) helps you understand what type of person you are, and helps you make decisions that are true to yourself. So if smoking is one of your Shapos then stick to it – and your other Sures & Shapos too! 5. Look out for your friends. Support friends who are considering smoking by telling them they don’t need it, and that the curiosity isn’t worth it – they only stand to have regrets. Re sure ka great friends who care about each other just as much as they care about themselves!

Spotlight

This issue we highlight a local SHEro: an inspiring woman with a strong spirit who gives back to her community. SKY Guy Tommy, 18, nominated his mother Lorato as a SKY SHEro – read about why he nominated her below.

M

y mother, Lorato Moalusi, is my SHEro, because of how she has overcome chidhood trauma and has become a loving, capable woman who helps others. She is the CEO of the Botswana Gender Based Violence Prevention and Support Centre (BGBVC), an NGO that works in the prevention of gender based violence (GBV) in Botswana. She is a social worker and development practitioner. She was born in South Africa and raised in Botswana to a family of 8 kids, with her being the third born. She raised a family of her own, my sister and I, and we are proud to be part of it. Like most people, my mother has gone through challenges in life. Her parents were working in South Africa in the early stages of her life and at the time, South Africa was an apartheid state. Her parents did not wish for her to grow up in a racially strenuous environment. My mother is grateful for their sacrifice and is adamant that they did their best. In that time, she and her siblings had to stay with relatives. She recalls it as the toughest thing she had to overcome, not only because her parents were not

around but she endured physical and emotional abuse from ages 2-13. “Dealing with and overcoming the long term effects of abuse and learning to forgive my abuser, is one of the most difficult things I’ve experienced”, she says. I’ve known her as a conqueror, able to do anything in the world and highly motivated. She is motivated by the way her parents didn’t have much but made their life as comfortable as possible, how they prioritised her education. She recalls a time when she’d get home from school and her mother would encourage her to do schoolwork before chores and household duties. As a mother, she took that lesson and applied it to us as she encouraged my sister and me to be diligent in our studies and she’d take care of everything else. Seeing her older brothers going to school and making it drove her even further and is a contributing factor to her lasting success. Her life experiences have taught her many lessons including how to forgive people who have hurt you in the past and anger management. She believes

this has made her a good leader both in her work and personal life. She has developed humility and a gentle spirit. She never really raises her voice to anyone, including us as problematic children. Above all she has compassion for people, especially those who have experienced some sort of abuse, and this has fuelled the work she does today. Finally, a word of advice from my mother. “Everything is a phase, it

will pass. Never allow anything or anyone to take away the potential to be the best that you can be. Do everything to be the best version of yourself, learn to forgive people that hurt you”. She is not only an inspiration to me but many others and her work has impacted the nation at large. She has taught me so much and I appreciate her sacrifices throughout my life. I am proud to call this strong, beautiful soul my mother.

Jinger Stone NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

If you watched the 2021 YAMAs you know about this fly sista who won Best Newcomer (and was the only girl nominated in that category!) She is bubbly, bright and gifted, and we KNOW you’ve been vibing with her song a na le Team Distant ‘Colder Than Water’. We are so proud of her and super excited to give you all a glimpse of Oarabile AKA Jinger Stone.

The country with the most official languages is Zimbabwe, with 16

25 SKY: What are your Sures and Shapos? Jinger Stone: Ke sure ka positive energy and complete honesty, both to myself and others. Ke shapo ka negative vibes, drugs and smoking. I am in an industry where these things happen and I realise that it isn’t worth it at the end of the day, even though I empathise with people who do these things. SKY: What piece of advice would you give your teenage self? JS: Love and accept yourself before you do anything else. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Negative self-image will trip you up later on if you aren’t careful. SKY: What advice would you give to any SKY Girl who wants to make it in the music industry? JS: Keep your family and friends close. They will keep you grounded and humble. And be patient with yourself. Rome wasn’t built in a day. SKY: Were you a SKY Girl? JS: I am 19 years old right now. In junior school, SKY came to my school and I took the pledge. I used to be so obsessed with the merch and the message. I love what SKY does so it’s really cool being here now!! SKY: What is one thing you cannot do without? JS: I might die without my headsets. I need to be able to get in my own space anywhere. The music doesn’t hit the same without them either. SKY: When did you discover your love for music? JS: My father would always play music around the house. I found myself loving the way it made me feel. It was an outlet. I joined a choir in preschool and the rest was history. I kept learning and growing.

SKY: What is the best gift you have ever received? JS: I used to think I was a mermaid in my past life. My sister went on a school trip to Cape Town and brought me back this beautiful bracelet with seashells. I have never been to the beach before. It was such a sweet and thoughtful gift. Almost like taking me with her. SKY: What are your hobbies? JS: Making poetry into music, taking long walks (even though ke sa rate letsatsi), making tie-dye and reading. SKY: Who do you look up to? JS: My mother. She is so strong. Watching her run a household, take care of and put up with us was so inspiring. If I can be half the woman she is, I will be happy with myself. SKY: What do you love about being a girl in this era? JS: How much we stand up for our bodily autonomy and our rights. How much more we stand up to toxic beauty standards and stand together instead of competing. It is awe-inspiring. SKY: What would you give to the world if you could give anything at all? JS: Education. There is so much untapped talent and potential hiding amongst the ‘illiterate’ and ‘uneducated’. The information imbalance leaves the untouched world to fend for itself and it’s really sad. SKY: What quotes or sayings do you live by? JS: I heard Beyonce say to do nothing without intention and it slapped. You shouldn’t do things nje nje, even relationships. Some people are going nowhere very quickly. Live with intention.

SKY: What do you want to do for 2022? JS: To push my boundaries and grow. To learn, go out more and live outside the box. SKY: What is the one thing you would do for yourself if you could do anything? JS: I would start a brand for size minorities. A brand that made the ‘awkward’ people feel seen and inspired confidence. SKY: What is one warning you would give teenage girls in regards to protecting your peace? JS: After cutting someone toxic off, you will probably experience guilt. Don’t. Be proud of you for choosing you. It wasn’t easy but you did that sis! SKY: How do you stay confident? JS: Confidence fluctuates. Don’t listen to people because they always talk. You need to stay focused on you and the prize. Stay positive and remember those that are cheering you on. SKY: Tell us about the moment you won the YAMA for best newcomer. JS: I was nervous and I experienced a lot of self doubt. I was the only female artist among great male artists. When they called my name the only thought I had in my head was ‘Pinch me.’ I was surprised, overwhelmed, shocked, happy and I felt like I was on the right path. This is just the beginning. It was so motivating. I feel so seen.

Let’s face it, most of us struggle to focus and concentrate in certain environments, especially where it’s loud or full of distractions. Therefore, in order to have a successful study session, you’ll want to first make sure you eliminate distractions. Find a space where you can read, write and concentrate with minimal distractions; it could be finding a quiet corner of the library, putting on noise-cancelling headphones or camping out in your bedroom at home (at a desk, not your bed!). Once you’ve found that place, use it every time you study. This will help train your brain to know it’s time to get down to business. A separate study area is better than using a bedroom, kitchen or living room.

STAY FULLY CHARGED

Do your best to avoid all-nighters. The iconic all-nighter study session is something most students have done at one point or another in their academic life, but it’s not an ideal way to study. The famous and dreaded burnout comes quickly when you cram for a test or write an assignment in one night—and you’re likely to end up not performing at your peak when you’re fighting sleep and are hyped up on caffeine. Skip these if at all possible.

We will soon be going back to school for 2022 and we all need to maximise our efforts to get the best out of it. One way of doing this is practising good study habits to set you off on the right foot during the next school year. The following tips will give your brain the boost it needs for back to school!

NO STRESS ZONE

Once you’ve found that quiet space, make sure it’s free of distractions. That means making sure family members know it’s study time and don’t come knocking on your door every now and then (a friendly sign on the door is fine). It also means making sure you pick a time that is generally quiet (could be early hours of the morning, late evenings or during the day before everybody else gets back home). Limit self-imposed distractions too; try turning off your phone notifications and social media while you hit the books.

SET UP YOUR SPACE AND BE ORGANISED

We often overlook the importance of a well set-up study space. One of the most important reasons for having such a study space is that it sharpens the mind and improves concentration. New notebooks, pretty folders to organise your papers and pens that have just the right feel for taking notes can all set the scene and motivate you to study just a bit longer. For those hours-long study blocks, make sure you have a comfortable chair and appropriate height desk. And it never hurts to have easy-to-eat snacks within arm’s reach! The more natural light that can enter a study space, the better; also make sure that your study space allows for plenty of fresh air. This will help your mind to focus. The less clutter that is there in the study area, the less likely it is that you will be distracted. A neat and tidy room is always full of positive energy and enhances concentration whereas negative energy and an untidy environment can cause just the opposite.

REWARD YOURSELF!

Positive reinforcement is an amazing thing. When you have completed tasks, reward yourself in small ways. This can be anything from allowing yourself to take a 10 minute break to treating yourself to a movie. By rewarding yourself in the moment, your brain elicits positive emotions, leading to the realisation that your efforts result in a positive reward. By doing this continuously, your brain will start to link pleasure to accomplishing the task and move towards it in the future. This will help to avoid procrastinating! Celebrate each of your accomplishments, big or small.

LIST IT OUT

Along the same lines, as for being organised, lists are your friend. These can help you conquer your assignments in manageable chunks. A daily list of what you need to get done for all your study sessions is very helpful to get the most out of every study session academically. Make a daily checklist using a board or sticky notes, so you won’t forget any essentials. You can also use this to assess your progress and achievements on a daily basis.

STRETCH YOUR MIND AND BODY

Yes, studying is important, and you should expect to spend hours each week devoted to it. But burnout can also come quickly if you plant yourself at your desk and don’t sleep, eat or stretch. Set a timer for an appropriate length of time (30 minutes to an hour is usually a solid block to get some real studying in). Then, when it goes off, get up, stretch or take a walk outside for some fresh air. Getting your eyes away from a screen is important to keep yourself fresh, so don’t just scroll through social media during a break. This approach gives you time to focus while also allowing time to relax and reenergise. Be careful though - you need to make sure that your quick breaks don't turn into longer procrastination breaks!

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

Start small and divide your study time into blocks separated by quick breaks. As the saying goes, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Take it little by little by setting small manageable goals, with the big picture in mind. If you’ve got a big assignment looming, stay motivated by completing a piece of the assignment every few days. Write one paragraph each night. Or, do 5 algebra problems from your assignment at a time. Studying minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, gets you to your bigger goal.

Nigeria has more English speakers than England

READ, REVIEW, REPEAT

Incorporate a review routine into your study sessions. It goes without saying; go to class, take notes, listen to the teacher. Then, after each class, review your notes, figure out if you have any follow-up questions and incorporate all of this into your study sessions. You can’t cram the book the night before the final exam and expect to succeed. Look over your notes each night to make sure you've got it. Fill in details, edit the parts that don’t make sense, and highlight the bits of information that you know are most important. Interacting with your notes will help you remember them. Review, review, review!

be? We asked 4 successful young women how they got their first jobs, and what advice they have for SKY Girls out there looking for work…

Mmapula Sedie, 23 What is your current job? Account Executive at an advertising agency. What was your first paid job? I was part of the SKY Girls BW television segment on Pula Power. My role was to present the show and there were about 3 episodes which we shot in 1 day. I was 16 years old when I presented this show and I couldn’t believe that I was going to be on TV!!!!! How did you get that job? I got the job because I was already a SKY Girls ambassador (selected by my schoolmates), so I did not get interviewed. However, there were other ambassadors and they did not get picked for the TV presenting job, so I believe that my attitude every time I interacted with the SKY Girls team is what got me hired. I was always respectful, humble, outgoing and most importantly I was myself. SKY is about staying true to yourself and I believe they wanted SKY girls who embodied this. Any advice for a SKY Girl trying to get their first job? Be persistent and open-minded. I mean that you should not give up and not that you should harass people lol. Years ago when I was chosen to become a SKY Girls ambassador, I had no idea that this would open more doors for me but I was open-minded. My current job title is because of that first work experience I had, so I am forever grateful.

Kelello Phomello Stephens, 20 What is your current job? Head Administrator Trainee at Travellers Funeral Services. How did you get this job? I was introduced to my current employer through a friend I met at university. Initially, I was hired for a part-time data entry job. I was expected to work one week every month with the sole purpose of entering data. However, after a weeklong job and having spent majority of that time with my current employer, she told me to call her again after completing my exams. One month later I made the call, and I was hired on the spot. I never had an interview and I doubt I was hired because of my qualifications. After a few weeks of being employed, I asked why I was hired, and I was told that I simply had a good work ethic. What was your first paid job? I worked as a personal tutor at the age of seventeen. I had one child I would tutor three times a week. At that age, the little money I made in the beginning was quite liberating because I had made it with my own hands. Any advice for a SKY Girl trying to get their first job? Don’t be too picky – stay open-minded. I would have never imagined that I would be working at a funeral parlour, but I believe there are so many valuable lessons to learnt from different places. You never know where life is going to take you and you could apply the lessons you learn now creatively in future.

Amogelang Moatlhaping, 27 What is your current job? I currently work as a Transformation Specialist for a consultancy called Positive Performance. Our job is to assist organisations leverage on culture, organisational behaviour and positive psychology to achieve high performance and overall business improvement. What was your first paid job? At 18 years I worked at a restaurant as a waitress. While waiting to begin tertiary school, I thought it would be a great idea to find a job. I applied to work at a restaurant, luckily it had just opened to the public and they needed a lot of staff. I went through the interview and training process which was very intense. But I am quite good at listening and taking instruction therefore I managed to pass quite easily and eventually got hired. Any advice for a SKY Girl trying to get their first job? This is probably something I should have known myself, but persistently knocking on doors and not being lukewarm about it.

You have between 2 and 5 million sweat glands, and the more active you are, the more you sweat

Larona Lekgabe, 28 What is your current job? PR & Stakeholder Relations Manager

29

What was your first job and how old were you? I remember my first job very fondly because I enjoyed it so much. I was only 20 years old and doing my first year at university when I became a Student Ambassador. Since I was a student, the job was part time and took place mostly on weekends. My main role was to support the Student Recruitment Team to attract new students to the university. This included conducting tours of the campus to prospective students and their parents and representing the university at career fairs. How did you get that job? The Student Recruitment Team put out an advert for the role with all the qualifications needed. I applied through their online system and had to go through a series of oral interviews and assessments before I finally got the job. What is your number one piece of advice to a SKY Girl trying to get their first job? Do not limit yourself to one area or industry. Soft skills can be gained in almost all workplaces, so broaden your mind and look for jobs even in the most unlikely places. And also put yourself out there. Platforms like LinkedIn connect you to so many professionals across the world and also give you a chance to advertise yourself and what you can do.

SKY’s Top Tips on finding & securing your FIRST IMPRESSIONS first job COUNT

When you’re older, your qualifications and work experience will be important. But right now those things are not very important – it’s all about first impressions! When applying for jobs, make sure that you come across as confident, friendly and professional – someone that anyone would want to work with! First impressions are also important when it comes to application letters and CVs. Make sure they are neat, professional and double check for any errors such as spelling, grammar or consistency.

FOCUS ON QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY

USE YOUR NETWORK It is not common for people to hire a stranger based on an application letter, they usually hire people they know. In fact, you probably already know someone who has a job that you could do – it might be your aunt, a family friend, a teacher, or a neighbour. So make sure you tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job, so that next time they hear about one they think of you. Ask around as much as possible and don’t be afraid to ask people again, for example every 3 months. That just shows you are committed.

PROVE YOURSELF

Lots of people think that the more application letters they drop off at different companies, the more chance they have of getting a job. But unfortunately, most companies have a big stack of applications by their reception desk of people just like you, which means they are unlikely to ever call you. Instead, focus on the most likely companies to be hiring, and make sure your application letter is tailored towards that specific company. That demonstrates a genuine interest in the work and the company, which people appreciate.

When you’re a teenager, nobody expects you to have work experience. But they do want some evidence that you are hardworking, smart and trustworthy. One way of doing this is to offer to work for free (for one time only!) – tell them you have a free day and you’re happy to work for no pay, just to gain experience. There is a high chance that if you work hard on that day they might hire you again in future. Plus whatever happens, at least you now have some experience to include on your CV.

Money Tips by Mmapsi

Money, diZaka, Chelete, Machankura- we all want to make it, regardless of what you call it. Money means so many different things to us all, but one thing that is consistent is that there is VALUE attached to it. This value makes it possible for us all to do the things we want to do. Be it buying lunch with friends, buying a new phone, subscribing for data on your phone or for transport. The truth is that most people want to spend it but don’t know how to earn it. You can’t spend what you don’t have right? I believe in a three-word mantra that makes things easier to understand and achieve: Learn, Earn & Invest. Here are some tips that can help you do that!

P

LEARN P

Learning about your attitude towards money will help you to understand why you do the things you do. Once you learn about how you feel about money, you can improve.

P a deal with your parents that you want to sell cupcakes or donuts so they support you and give you the permission to use the ingredients (since they are not yours) and the kitchen. 3. Are you fashion-forward? Style your friends in return for some money. Maybe they can afford just P20 for your services to style them for their birthday. P20 is still a great start. You can also find cool DIY styling tips for your clothes in the SKY magazine; repurpose these and make old clothes look brand new and sell them!

There are different money personalities, being: • The Spender (you always want to spend any money you receive) • The Saver (the first thing you think about when you receive money is saving it) • The Security Seeker (you want to find ways to secure the money you receive through making sure you grow it; maybe through a small business) I know most of us are spenders (monate wa go spender bathong!!), but honestly all three personalities are important in their own way. So you need to understand which one of these is number 1 for you then find a balance between the three. You need to spend a little in order to make more money right? You also need some security so that you have enough money to save. Once you learn about your personality and attitude towards money, you can easily find ways to earn money and save it!

P

INVEST

EARN

What is ‘earning’? Many people define earning as receiving money because of labour or work. As a teenager, I am not allowed to work so does that mean that I cannot earn money?

Some of you are given an allowance or transport money every day or month, you can start making an effort with this money so that you earn more. Do you really need a pie and a drink from the school tuckshop every day? On some days, have your pie with water from your water bottle and put aside the money for the drink to find a way to EARN MORE. In time, that “drink money” can be used to start a small business, like selling sweets to your friends. Some of you do not have money that you receive at all. This is still fine, you just have to be more creative in finding ways to earn. Meaning that you need to put in effort.

P

NOPE!! You can. The best definition I like to describe “to earn” is that it is to RECEIVE something in return for EFFORT. So earning does not always have to do with money or work, but it is about receiving something because of the effort you put in.

P

You can always find ways to earn, but you need to put in the effort!

Now that you better understand your relationship with money and have found ways to make some money- you need to INVEST IT! This is the last step because it can only happen when you have earned some money akere? Many people would say the last step should be “saving” but I believe that being young and active is the best time to invest. Why? Because investing is using money in order to earn more money. Remember how I said before that all 3 money personalities are important? Well yes, investing is about spending money but in a smart way so that you earn more! For example, the money you made from selling donuts, you need to use some of it to buy ingredients so that you sell more donuts and EARN more money. That’s investing! Investing is important because it helps you to continue to earn more, by making the business sustainable. In time, if you invest instead of just spending, you will put less effort into earning! Finally, if you take one thing away from this article it should be “the more you learn, the more you earn”. Please learn more so that you stand a better chance to earn more. Let’s secure the bag, SKY Girls!

Choose new year’s resolutions that will increase your confidence You are a wonderful and beautiful person, but for some reason you would not describe yourself that way! You help others but you need to invest in a little self-love, to help grow your confidence and nurture that lovely spirit inside you. You deserve only good things and so long as you believe in yourself and stick to your decisions, good things will come your way. Specific ideas for your resolutions: • Write down one thing you love about yourself every day. • Don’t allow yourself to be peer pressured into anything in 2022. • Improve your posture – sitting and standing up tall can make you feel more confident!

Mostly B:

Choose new year’s resolutions that will help you be more organised You are a fun person to be around and you don’t suffer from a lack of confidence, which is awesome. But you have a tendency to be a little disorganised. It’s great to plan things but remember you also have to see them through to the end! Have you ever made a new year’s resolution that you forgot about on January 1st? Mm, we thought so lol. Specific ideas for your resolutions: • Make a priority list every day or every week with your tasks on it. • Re-organise your room and all your possessions, and don’t lose anything for an entire year. • Follow through with every commitment you make, don’t abandon plans halfway through.

Mostly C:

Choose new year’s resolutions that will help you learn how to relax You are an organised and dependable individual, well done for having high standards and meeting them! But your desire to do the right thing all the time means you sometimes miss out on fun, spontaneous activities, which are all part of a healthy life balance. So in 2022, we advise that you embrace your youth and allow yourself time to PLAY as well as work. Specific ideas for your resolutions: • Designate one day a week as a ‘closed books’ day where you are not allowed to study. • Plan at least one fun activity per month, like cooking or a home spa day. • Learn a new skill that is about creativity rather than academics or hard work (like painting, dancing or writing poetry).
