project description
Students were to design a luxury hotel in Sils-Maria, Graubunden, Switzerland. The hotel requires 60 guest rooms, a fine restaurant, a generous and distinctive public bath, a memorable bar, generous back of the house service spaces, parking for guests and visitors, and a landscape designed for leisure and recreation use. The entire structure was to be build in revit. In addition, withing revit we were to create something using a conceptual mass and curtain panel. Views C & D show what was made through conceptual masses; a patterned wall/lighting system.

Design Proposal: The Cross Axis of Circulation I came to the decision of the structural shape through some parti exercises, shown on the left side page. I was interested in exploring a cross sectional design and decided to have an axis of both wet and dry. The ‘wet’ axis gave locations for the baths and circulation to them while the ‘dry’ axis was home to the bar, restaurant, hotel rooms and circulation to those areas. I wanted the moment of intersection to be where the two circulation halls met, this is pictured above. Site Section

Proposal of Approach: Keeping the building discrete This hotel is located on a hill overlooking beautiful mountains and water. Because of the location, it was important to me to design a building that didn't protrude from the landscape, and one that was mostly hidden from the street. The street is located at the top of the hill so to create this hidden hotel I put the entrance in a 850sqft space at the top of the hill so it’s all you would see driving up.

Once you enter that space you are greeted and directed to the elevator pertaining to your needs; hotel guest or just visiting the baths. Everything from here happens on lower floors and with each move you are slowly introduced to new views. NOTE: Since the Floors start at the top, all plans will be in order from to bottom with negative numbers, -1 being the entrance, -2 being the Lobby and restaurant and so forth.

A part of the project requirements was to create something custom through conceptual mass families. Using that technique as well as curtain panels i designed the wall that is show in two of the above renders. The panels close to the windows hold lights inside them. These ‘open’ panels are also the supply area for the HVAC system.
The Baths: A reference to Natural Hot Springs
Rooftop Bath
Over my life I have been to many natural hot springs, from those in Oregon to Iceland. I wanted to baths to resembled the way they are in nature, where one cascades into another, rolling down a hill.
