Letter from the Editors After a long winter, spring is finally here! This winter was packed full of exciting events, from Holidays Around the World and JeffHOPE Ball to Relay for Life and Diversity Week.

Just a few weeks ago was Match Day, when fourth years learned of where they matched for residency. It’s hard to believe that in just a month, our recent graduates will be interns in hospitals across the country!

We are excited to commemorate these events and more in the second issue of Black & Blue, the SKMC Student Council Newsletter. As always, please feel free to reach out to us with your questions, comments, and ideas for future issues - we love hearing from you!

18th Annual JeffHOPE Ball

The Jefferson community came together to celebrate the 18th Annual JeffHope Ball on February 20, 2015. The attendees danced the night away at the beautiful Crystal Tea Room before heading to Barra Rossa for the event after-party. Approximately 700 people attended the event, which raised about $25,000 to support JeffHOPE’s efforts to provide urgently needed medical care to underserved communities across Philadelphia.

The annual ball is one of the premier social events every spring at Jefferson. It’s a chance to celebrate a year’s worth of hard work done by dedicated volunteers from all four years at Sidney Kimmel Medical College and to lay the groundwork for another year of service. As it comes so soon after the handover of responsibility from the previous nine directors to the current group, and just two weeks after new JeffHOPE Committee members were appointed, it’s also a chance to especially honor the previous year’s organizational leaders.

During the ceremony, a number of people were honored for their great work during the year. Dr. Kate McGrath, a resident of the Jefferson Department of Family and Community Medicine, won the 2nd Annual Dr. Dave Manoff Honorary JeffHOPE Outstanding Physician Award. Sarah Yeager, PharmD, a resident of the Department of Pharmacy, received the JeffHOPE Outstanding Resident Service Award. Alexandra Strauss, a second-year medical student and JeffHOPE Research Committee member, received the JeffHOPE Outstanding Medical Student Service Award Winner.

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Kathryn Trayes

Jefferson is full of “lifers”, physicians who start at Jefferson to earn a medical degree and never leave. Dr. Kathryn Trayes is a “lifer”. As a medical student here, she was one of the four admissions coordinators, a member of the professional conduct committee, and a student representative on the ethics committee. After her residency here, she developed these passions into her role as an Associate Dean for the Office of Student Affairs and Career Counseling and a family physician.

“Get involved in activities in which you are interested, because that will shape your career, rather than finding a career and using that

to shape your extracurriculars,” said Dr. Trayes, from experience.

Students can hear more advice from Dr. Trayes in the office where she guides first years through shadowing, second years through their USMLE preparation, third years through career planning and rotation scheduling, and fourth years with their residency application process.

She and the other Deans act as liaisons between students and the administration in charge of the curriculum, student promotions, and the greater Jefferson organization.

“Use your mentors and look up to practicing clinicians because they’ve paved the path already.

Many students get caught up in their own world and don’t utilize their resources as much as they could,” said Dr. Trayes.

As one of these resources herself, she has experience determining career choice and managing a worklife balance. In fact, she considers her biggest achievement being able to balance her dual roles: maintaining her clinical practice while evolving in the Dean’s office. Juggling many responsibilities seemed to be her

goal from a very young age.

“My mom showed me a note from kindergarten where I wrote that I wanted to be a mom, a doctor, and a Rockette,” said Dr. Trayes. “I got two out of the three!”

When she is in the office, Dr. Trayes enjoys working with students and providing personal, academic and career advice.

“I love helping [students] determine their careers; watching them learn their strengths and helping them explore how to get where they want to be,” said Dr. Trayes.

However, outside the office, she paddle boards, golfs and has recently taken up platform tennis.

She takes the time to enjoy her work and her play.

“I love what I do. I have a story every day, whether it is from a student or a patient,” said Dr. Trayes. “I get to be involved with students’ and patients’ personal lives and develop an intimate relationship very quickly, and that’s unique.”

Dr. Trayes listens to many stories, but now you have heard her own.

Student Council Updates SKMC Student Council is comprised of elected representatives from each class at SKMC. Each year, the first through fourth years vote to elect two co-Presidents, a Secretary of Communications, a Secretary of External Affairs, and a Treasurer. Additionally, select students are chosen to sit on University administrative committees.

Major responsibilities of Student Council include supervision of student organizations, disbursement of university funds, and the dissemination of information on issues pertinent to student life.

Student Council has just welcomed a new executive board and twenty new committee members. Please feel free to reach out to any of our members with questions, comments, or concerns. We’re here to represent you!

Executive Board President of Legislative Affairs

Mai Tsukikawa, ‘17

As President of Legislative Affairs, Mai gathers and addresses constituent concerns and coordinates Student Council sponsored programming. Mai also supervises the class representatives and student organizations.

President of Administrative Affairs

Will Merritt, ‘17

As President of Administrative Affairs, Will oversees elections and enforces the constitution. Will also supervises the committee representatives and the orientation program for incoming first-year students.

Treasurer

Ludwig Koeneke-Hernandez, ‘18

As Treasurer, Ludwig maintains an exact record of all accounts and provides up-to-date summaries of the status of the treasury at each Student Council meeting.

Ludwig runs the annual budget meetings and manages all budget requests.

Secretary of Communications

Michelle Ponder, ‘18

As Secretary of Communications, Michelle compiles and sends out announcement emails that list upcoming events to the entire student body. Michelle also sends out reminders for Student Council meetings and takes meeting minutes.

Secretary of External Affairs

Salam Peter Beah, ‘18

As Secretary of External Affairs, Salam maintains communication and connections with all other schools at TJU. He also reaches out to other Philadelphia medical schools to increase the presence of SKMC in the Philadelphia area.

Conference Funding Did you know that Student Council offers funding to students presenting their research at conferences? MS1-3 are eligible to receive up to $150, and MS4 can receive up to $200. Applicants must request a spot on the agenda of the next Student Council meeting and present briefly about their research. Funding is subject to majority vote of the Council. Peter Owens, ‘15, presented his research on the temporal relationships between inpatient admissions and the lunar phases at the American Academy of Emergency Medicine conference in Austin.

Ryan Smith, ‘15, presented his research on the visual outcomes and safety profile of scleral-fixated intraocular lenses using Gore-tex suture at the American Academy of Ophthalmology conference in Chicago.

Deans’ Corner

By Dr. Kristin DeSimone, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Career Counseling We had a taste of spring on Monday, the first day back from spring break and the home opener for the Phillies. I hope first and second years enjoyed some much-needed time off. And hopefully Monday’s game isn’t a sign of what’s to come. Make sure you get to a game this spring or summer.

We’ve had a busy time here in Student Affairs in the past few weeks. The LCME site visit was in the beginning of March, and so many students were instrumental in the entire process – thank you for all of your work leading up to the visit as well as during their time on campus. It is so invigorating to see our students show off our school so proudly.

Senior Portrait: On March 19, the fourth year class honored Dr. Bill McNett, Department of Pediatrics (and ICM I course director) with his portrait. It is truly one of the highest honors to have the graduating class recognize a faculty for their role in their education. The ceremony was standing room only filled with friends, family, staff, patients, and

of course, students. Well-deserved, Dr. McNett!

Match Day: The fourth year students (and all of us in Student Affairs) celebrated Match Day 2015 on Friday, March 20. As always, we had a terrific match! Match lists are posted on the Student Affairs Blackboard site (under “postmatch”). In January, 17 students matched into ophthalmology and 4 into urology. The top five specialties for the class of 2015 were: Internal Medicine (64), Pediatrics (27), Family Medicine (26), Emergency Medicine (21) and Orthopaedic Surgery (20). Also of interest, 24% matched at Jefferson or one of our affiliate hospitals, so you may see some of them when you rotate.

We hear terrific things about our graduates when they are teaching our students.

USMLE Step 1: While the second years were busy learning so much medicine in FCM, the truth is, the USMLE Step 1 looms overhead. The practice half-length exam on April 22 is a good gauge to see where you are starting. Most students feel

relieved that they actually recognize much of what is asked on the exam.

It’s in there somewhere, I promise.

On April 15, our AOA students hosted a panel discussion on specific step 1 study schedules. Sample schedules were sent out via email. There will be some variety in what they have done, but in general, students will create a study schedule that includes blocks of UWorld questions and blocks of review books. The key is to stick to the schedule and get through all (or almost all) of the practice questions, reviewing the answers along the way.

Last year’s average was higher than national, so I’m sure that trend will continue. The Wellness Committee is also committed to keeping students healthy during this stressful time, so stay tuned for what they have in store for you.

Finally, as the academic year has come to an end, enjoy the sunshine, get some fresh air, and be sure check in with your student affairs dean if it’s been a while. If you haven’t seen our new office, it’s time for a visit!

Match Day 2015

On Friday, March 20, the 277 students of SKMC’s Class of 2015 opened the envelopes that contained their future. Match Day, held on the third Friday of March each year, is the culmination of four (or more) very challenging years of medical school and one of the most exciting days of a future physician’s career. On this day, the results of the National Resident Matching Program are announced, informing graduating medical students of the residency programs at which they will continue their training. One hundred percent of the class matched into specialty programs or partially matched into preliminary or transitional programs. Congratulations to the Class of 2015 on a very successful match!

Winter 2014 & Spring 2015 Highlights The Arrhythmias (bottom left) brought holiday cheer to Jefferson University Hospitals! Jefferson Diversity Council (bottom right) planned another successful Holidays Around the World event that showcased different cultures and religious festivals from across the globe. On March 13, Relay For Life (all other pictures) was set up between 6pm and 2am to celebrate cancer survivors, remember the loved ones lost to the disease, and fight back by fundraising for the American Cancer Society. This year, Jefferson broke the $100,000 mark cumulatively by raising over $16,000 and counting!

A large portion of this total came from the Relay event itself, which was themed “A Relay Around the World� and included raffle baskets, diverse foods, Olympic-style games, and even a drag show!

Best Philly Cheesesteaks Philadelphia native, Megan Lundy, ‘17, knows her Philly cheesesteaks. In fact, the moment she was born (right here at Jefferson), her father proclaimed, “She’s our little cheesesteak!” Here are Megan’s top picks for cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, taking into account all the important factors that affect a cheesesteak’s taste: grill age (most important), cheese to meat ratio, cheese melting, and of course, the bread.

#3: Jim’s Jim’s Steaks was founded in 1939, when Jim began selling his cheesesteaks from his home-turned-storefront on 62nd Street. In the early 1960’s, Jim sold his business to the Proetto family, who expanded to several different locations across Philadelphia. Pat Olivieri invented the steak sandwich in 1930, and Pat’s is still owned by the Olivieri family at its original location.

Geno’s across the street has been Pat’s main competitor for over four decades, but according to our expert Meg, has the inferior product. Check them out because they’re historical landmarks, but remember that there are better cheesesteaks in Philly.
