EDITORS LETTER friends, family, the dog or the person nearest at any given time. It could be the Hideaway on the river up from Hampton Court where the chicken waffles and French 65s hit you right with the views on a lazy mid-morning. The Barrafina buzz whisks you to the side streets of Barcelona drooling in Gamba Roja and Txakoli by the glass. Or the time-stopping ease of the winter garden in Rules over a Naughty Mac and Grandma’s drapes. The spots you’ve fallen in love with and want to share but just not with everyone.

As an antidote to the pace modern living has given us, we wanted to create a little haven of longness. For those who don’t need to rush themselves on holiday, those who don’t have time to eat overpriced armpit crust. Those who want to wear lunch as droolery and take a little time off from, well, the other parts of their day.

That’s the reasoning behind this Paper at any rate. To share a little of the things we love, to make a little of your time in the mountains, on the train, in the office, a little longer, lusher and lazier. And if you do find yourself wandering where to go for lunch whilst lingering on the side of the mountain then you can look up the long lunch list and have a fabulously easy time.

The winter I ate the Alps. A lunch voucher was the unassuming start of something that, little did we know then, would take over a year of our lives.

Ben Vickers Ben Vickers is one of those musicians that locals, holidaymakers and seasonaires all know, love and continue to seek out time and time again. Known for his soulful voice and magnetic presence, he is a loved fixture in the Alps. Armed with a guitar and a creamy voice, Vickers is a truly versatile performer.

Hobo Chic Last, but certainly not least, is Hobo Chic. This guy has a talent for groovy funk and acoustic sets, where he puts his own unique spin on

classics. He’s got the stage presence dialled and is just such a likeable character you can’t help yourself but get involved. If you find yourself with the opportunity to see Hobo Chic live, jump at it.

band to see. These trailblazers have already got themselves a cheeky reputation, with a solid fan base coming back time and time again to hear their tunes.

What many may not realise is that Les 3 Vallées has a softer, more relaxing alter ego. It’s full of hidden-in-plain-sight spots where you can actually have conversations whilst you enjoy your post-ski beer.

Places that are ideal for those seeking a quieter end to their ski-filled day, without forgoing the fun and camaraderie that defines après-ski, of course. Accessible by skis or by foot, it’s a great meeting point for mixed groups.

Tango Bar Don’t let the name mislead you, there’s less tango-ing and more chillaxing going on here.

The drinks are reasonably priced, the atmosphere is vibrant (but not too vibrant), and it’s only a stone’s throw from the pistes.

The Frog & Roastbeef The Frog & Roastbeef isn’t just a bar, it’s a record-breaker.

Recognised as the highest pub in Europe, this place adds an extra dimension to the term ‘high spirits’. Despite its lofty accolades, The Frog maintains a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s like your favourite local pub, only with an unbeatable mountain view and the fresh alpine air thrown into the mix. It can get more lively than the other spots we’ve mentioned so far in Val Thorens but it’s worth visiting for one drink in the early afternoon to say you’ve visited the highest pub in Europe, right?

Ski holidays go hand in hand with adventure and there is a distinct pressure to perform on the slopes. After a busy week of mountaineering, we tend to ‘need another holiday to recover from this one.’

No other holiday has so many early starts. Snow is transient, the weather unpredictable and time seems ever more precious. Not a moment of blue sky is to be wasted.

But it’s important to remember… A ski trip is still a holiday.

What does the mind and body need? Sleep. Turning off the alarm and waking up naturally is the best medicine for recovery. Laying in bed for a few extra moments is the perfect time to forget about to-do lists and obligations.

This day is about listening to our desires and making wellness a priority. Every good sleep justifies an equally compelling breakfast.

There is no shortage of boulangeries in the Alps.

Getting around from Meribel Village Direct bus links on the A-line to Les Allues, Raffort and Meribel Centre. If you’re planning on making your morning ski lesson on time, we highly recommend getting the bus to Meribel Olympic.

Whilst you can, of course, get first lifts up the Golf chair, unfortunately, you’ll only end up somewhere near Altiport (aka not the Meribel Chaudanne) at the time your morning lessons are starting.

The lift is a great option for you afternoon lesson warriors, though.

Le Raffort
