Where the 3 Valleys hid its zen side

Words Megan Pleva

We’ll be honest, Les 3 Vallées has quite the reputationno, we’re not talking about the 600km of skiable terrain (that’s more of a fact), we’re talking about its aprèsski scene. A high-octane, raucous display of revelry that could have Dionysus himself blushing. When we think of Les 3 Vallées après, we often picture champagne spray replacing the snowfall and the continuous hum of ski boots boshing and bopping to the

beat. Yet, the après-ski culture in Les 3 Vallées isn’t just about the wild parties.

What many may not realise is that Les 3 Vallées has a softer, more relaxing alter ego. It’s full of hidden-in-plain-sight spots where you can actually have conversations whilst you enjoy your post-ski beer. Places that are ideal for those seeking a quieter end to their ski-filled day, without forgoing the fun and camaraderie that defines après-ski, of course. So, we’re here today to chat about the other side to Les 3 Vallées après – the relaxed kinda après that can be equally as fun and less headache-inducing.

Meribel

No dancing on tables here - Meribel style

Meribel has a vibrantly animated après-ski scene, where holidaymakers regularly find themselves submerged in a waterfall of rosé. Where holding a pint in freezing temperatures without gloves is totally normal. But, amid the non-stop party, Meribel is home to some seriously relaxed spots where you can chat away without the pressure of performing an impromptu dance party on a table.

L’Abreuvoir

In Meribel Centre, L’Abreuvoir is the embodiment of classic French elegance. Full of fluff y blankets and wooden charm. There’s plenty of seating inside and out with a nice blend of warm hospitality and relaxed ambience. A world away from the hustle and bustle of the wild après-ski scene in Meribel (because it’s actually French).

Le Savoy Hotel

Le Savoy Hotel is a testament to Meribel’s finesse. Think of an upscale library with a dash of 007’s style and you get Le Savoy. This place oozes class and sophistication, with a collection of delicious cocktails. It’s the perfect place for a quiet drink post-skiing. Perfect if you’re staying in Meribel Centre. full

Copina Meribel

Ah, Copina Meribel, how we love you. Here’s a place that has mastered the art of relaxed après-ski. With a unique cocktail menu, bubbly staff and an all-round lovely feel to it. It’s our top pick in Meribel Centre for an ‘après, not après but accidentally leave a little wobbly’ afternoon of post-skiing drinks. Plus, the Meribel Centre bus stop is literally right outside the Copina entrance… dangerous, we know.

The Rastro

Imagine this - you’re staying in Mottaret and you’ve just had the most satisfying day of skiing. You want a drink but you don’t want to deal with the buses back up the valley. We get it, we’ve been there too… The Rastro is the place to go. Why not bask in the sun with a crisp pint of lager instead? The Rastro’s sprawling terrace is a sun trap and the circular bar inside is a total social hub, making it a premier spot for a relaxed post-ski drink, whatever the weather.

Deus

Deus may be a tiny hole in the wall, but don’t be fooled by size. This bar packs a heft y punch. A local’s favourite, it’s a place for chilled drinks while mingling with Meribel’s residents… Not many of them though, the place fits like 10 people max.

Le Dionysos

Hidden away from Meribel Centre, Le Dionysos is a total gem. A charming little French bar, with comfy seating, free pool table and a darts board. It’s laid back and the limited seating ensures a quiet, relaxed atmosphere perfect for winding down after a day on the mountain.

relax with a local brew after a long day on the slopes. The bar itself feels like you’re walking into a living room you know and love, with sink-in-to sofas and warm furnishings. The best part? The secluded location makes it a yummy hideaway from the wild aprèsski crowd.

The Roy Bar

The Roy Bar is a stylish, laidback spot in the centre of Val Thorens, making it a great post-ski reunion spot. Its mellow tunes, warming fireplace and relaxed atmosphere make it a bar to kick back and relax with your ski boots up. Make sure to sample their vast selection of wines. After all, when in France, right?

Le Bar du Val Thorens

Visiting Le Bar du Val Thorens is to take a step back from the party and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. Snuggle up to the log fire with a hot drink and warm up after a big day on the hill. It’s super cush whilst managing to be modern and traditional at the same time. Accessible by skis or by foot, it’s a great meeting point for mixed groups.

Tango Bar

Don’t let the name mislead you, there’s less tango-ing and more chillaxing going on here. The drinks are reasonably priced, the atmosphere is vibrant (but not too vibrant), and it’s only a stone’s throw from the pistes.

The Frog & Roastbeef

The Frog & Roastbeef isn’t just a bar, it’s a record-breaker. Recognised as the highest pub in Europe, this place adds an extra dimension to the term ‘high spirits’. Despite its loft y accolades, The Frog maintains a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s like your favourite local pub, only with an unbeatable mountain view and the fresh alpine air thrown into the mix. It can get more lively than the other spots we’ve mentioned so far in Val Thorens but it’s worth visiting for one drink in the early afternoon to say you’ve visited the highest pub in Europe, right?

Val Thorens is not just about the highest ski pistes in Europe or the adrenalinepumping après-ski parties. It’s also about relaxing and enjoying the simple pleasures of good company, engaging conversation, and delicious drinks.
