elcome to 2022: The Year of the Arts. As Steamboat Creates celebrates its 50th anniversary of arts advocacy, the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide is proud to showcase the vibrant art community of Northwest Colorado. Steamboat Springs’ artistic roots go back to the Crawford family, who founded the city in the late 1800s. Today performing and visual arts are thriving, and Steamboat has been designated as a Certified Colorado Creative District. And as for the future, 2022 may well be the year that the path to tomorrow unfolds.

The Year of the Arts ›› A kaleidoscope of arts awaits visitors and locals alike in

Steamboat Springs in 2022. The art scene is vibrant, not only in terms of color palettes, but also in ingenuity, diversity and pure talent. A creative vibe pulses through the city, from classical music to street art, from innovative breweries to culinary delights, from galleries and museums to dancers among the aspen groves. While Steamboat recently received recognition as a Colorado Creative District, the story of arts in the Yampa Valley is as old as Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat the community itself. The Crawford family, who founded the city Creates in 1876, took time from the dawn-to-dusk work of homesteading in what was essentially wilderness to paint, write and host musical gatherings. Side by side with its long history of skiing, Steamboat Springs also has deep roots in the arts. Carl Howelsen, the Norwegian ski jumper who introduced recreational skiing to Ski Town USA, originally came to town in 1913 to visit Marjorie Perry, whose sister Charlotte and their friend Portia Mansfield were building a dance camp in Strawberry Park. Today, Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp is not only the longest-standing dance camp in the country, it is also credited with being an important part of the American modern dance movement. Fifty years ago, Eleanor Bliss, who had known Charlotte and Portia since she was a young woman, joined with Carol Finnoff, George Tolles and other friends to form the Steamboat Springs Council for the Arts and Humanities (DBA: Steamboat Creates). Eleanor spearheaded the drive to “Save the Depot” and transform it into a community art center. She had a vision for the future of arts and culture that continues to unfold today. Steamboat Creates, renamed in 2019, is hosting a year-long celebration in honor of the 50th anniversary of the only arts advocacy nonprofit in the region. The arts’ deep roots, our current vibrancy and our exciting future share the spotlight in 2022. We hope you will join in honoring the rich artistic culture that infuses Steamboat Springs. COURTESY OF SIMONE WHITE

about the cover

Simone White: “Alpenglow”

Simone White

›› After studying the work of famed Spanish surrealist Joan Miró, emerging Steamboat

Springs artist Simone White decided to create an original artwork, adapting his technique to her style. The result is “Alpenglow,” the artwork that appears on the cover of this special “Year of the Arts” edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. Simone’s interpretation of the mountains at sunset is a mixed media piece using watercolor, India ink and pen. The bold colors were inspired by Miró, whose work she viewed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The darker colors near the horizon suggest the sunset. The bold black lines are Simone’s own addition. They are a common theme in her work, employed to add contrast and rhythm. “Alpenglow” was created in mid-November in Steamboat, when there was no snow on the ground and the landscape was stark. Like other artists, she used the down time between seasons and the stay-at-home COVID-19 mandates to experiment with new media. “I think I’ve really been more inspired since COVID,” Simone says. Her next challenge is to create larger works. She has a 4-by-6-foot canvas waiting for her next spark of inspiration. Simone knows creativity is in her future, but as a 2021 Steamboat Springs High School graduate who is enjoying a gap year, she is not about to narrow her options. In addition to painting, she also crafts clay bowls and mugs, makes jewelry with mixed metals, glass and stones, and uses techniques like hydro-dipping and printmaking. She has dabbled in dance, photography and culinary arts. An internship with Chef Kate at Café Diva was cut short by COVID, but since then, culinary school has been high on her list of options. For now, travelling tops her list. Perhaps a trip to Barcelona, Spain, to see the Fundació Joan Miró? “Alpenglow” is on display at Pine Moon Fine Art, 117 Ninth St., through January, and then at the Depot Art Center, 1001 13th St. in downtown Steamboat. Her work can be viewed on Instagram at @white._simone. ■

pop, opera, jazz – even celestial sounds – float across the Yampa Valley. From Strings Music Festival, one of the most

renowned classical and contemporary music festivals in the nation, to emerging stars on stage at local clubs, Steamboat Springs is engrossed in music. The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Immersion 2022 literally immerses students of all ages into music for the weekend of March 4-5, culminating in a performance on Sunday, in which they perform side by side with SSO musicians. The event allows the community to hear the extraordinary grassroots talent that has been known to lead to recognition far beyond the valley. For example, of the 30 students who participate in the Steamboat Springs High School orchestra, six went to the all-state competition. Opera Steamboat first performed "La Bohème" by Giacomo Puccini in 2004. The timeless romance is scheduled to open the opera season in summer 2022.

Similarly, Opera Steamboat has grown from its initial vision of bringing world class opera singers to the Yampa Valley for a week into the Opera Artist Institute and a summer-long festival. For the first time, 2022 will see the schedule span June, July and August. "La Bohème" opens the festival on Saturday, June 18. Visitors may be initially surprised at the caliber of Opera Steamboat performances; they should not be. Not only does the opera attract top performers from world-renowned companies, but after all, the Yampa Valley is known for its talent. ■

›› When Cowboy Preacher James Norvell tried to stop the good citizens of Steamboat Springs from dancing in 1901, the Routt County Sentinel newspaper, in step with its readers, rose up in protest. Since its inception, this city has moved to the music. From modern dance and classical ballet at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp – now in its 109th year – to hip-hop and jazz, dance is at the heart of who we are. When Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield founded a summer dance camp in Strawberry Park in 1913, cowboys hid behind the aspens to watch the dancers sway to the wind. Today Perry-Mansfield boasts an unparalleled list of alumni, ranging from Isadora Duncan and Agnes DeMille to Jessica Biel and Mandy Moore. After a devastating COVID-19 hiatus in 2020 and a subsequent 2021 rebound, the dance camp is presenting a vibrant 2022 season. Like every aspect of the arts in which Steamboat is involved, local dancers build upon tradition and add their own delightfully unexpected twist.

The dance community is everything you’d expect from a city where arts are at the center of the scene, from holiday performances of the “Nutcracker” to two-steppin’ cowboys – plus an unlikely affinity for African dance. Robin Getter introduced the study of African dance and drum to Steamboat in the 1980s, and her passion has been passed down through generations of aficionadas. Local dancers have formed strong bonds with their counterparts in Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Congo, the Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe. Steamboat has seen a regular influx of African master teachers like Youssouf Koumbassa, Moustafa Bangoura, Mariatou Camera and Lucky Moyo, on stage for the 50th anniversary production of Steamboat Dance Theatre in February. One born-and-raised local African dancer, Abagail Fritz, has taken what she started learning in Steamboat to all new levels, dancing her gorgeous style on international stages and teaching in Los Angeles. She is only the latest Steamboat star to shine on the world stage. ■
