Greetings from the number-two most vibrant small town for arts and culture in the USA (according to SMU’s Creative Vitality Index). Steamboat Springs ranks #1 on arts and culture organizations and fourth on concentration of independent artists, per capita. This town is thriving with arts and culture, including art galleries, opera, music, dance, theater, distilleries, breweries and unique architecture and design. Local organizations have been hard at work making improvements, implementing safety measures and enhancing their online Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat programming providing a full range of activities. After more than Creates a year of closures due to the pandemic, museums, galleries, music performances and other cultural institutions have their doors wide open to visitors and patrons. We are now fully embracing in-person events. Like physical exercise or a good night’s sleep, the arts prove to be important to our health and wellbeing. We are thrilled to share our creative spirit with everyone who lives here or visits the area. Arts, culture and heritage are deeply entrenched in our community’s identity, resulting in a memorable and unique sense of place. As we look to the past, we celebrate the work from the Ute and Fremont Indigenous peoples who created artwork on rocks and in caves while the first settlers brought painting supplies and an organ upon their arrival. As we look at today’s creative landscape, we boast creative activities from opera, theater, symphony, dance and music festivals to a multitude of galleries, filmmakers, authors and designers. And as we look to the future, we welcome everyone to participate with us regardless of experience or talent. Join creators, feed your curiosity and get inspired. Celebrate arts’ enduring importance, resiliency and vibrancy to connect us on a meaningful level that sets Steamboat Springs apart from other small towns in Colorado. Marion Kahn, "The Space in between"

COURTESY MARION KAHN

about the cover

Marion Kahn

Joy is the word judges used to describe “Music,” the mixed media artwork by Steamboat Springs artist Marion Kahn that was selected unanimously to be the cover of this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. Kahn had the same feeling as she was creating the piece. “I felt very joyful when I was painting it, and it comes through.” The sentiment behind the three-part series of which this piece is a part is somber, however. “The Space In Between” series originated following the death of Kahn's daughter in 2019. The profound loss led Kahn to ponder the acute separation. “Can you reach to heaven?” she wondered. “Can you reach through? ‘The Space In Between’ is about that separation.” Like so many artists in the COVID era, the past year has been one of artistic exploration for Kahn. “This year has really been an experiential year. I’ve been taking a lot of chances,” she says. Santa Fe artist Lauren Mantecón, with whom Kahn has been studying, has been challenging her to try new things. “'Music' was one of my experiments this year,” she says. To create the work, Kahn went beyond her usual medium – oil – and began by applying layers of tissue paper, each one burnished before the next was applied. Acrylics and oil are the other media in the piece. “It’s got texture,” she says. “I think the texture is very important. It adds depth and excitement.” Kahn begins each piece by choosing the palette for it. “I’ll start with the color story. What color do I want to work in? When I start, I don’t know where the piece is going,” she says. In “Music,” for example, what most perceive as piano keys came about as a result of her willingness to respond to the work. “I really like doing abstracts; they’re like my soul,” Kahn says. “There’s more freedom to create something that’s not already there.” The vibrant, saturated colors in the background of “Music” may remind viewers of Kahn's signature sunset paintings, of which she has created 11, to date. “Once you get going, you get that energy,” she explains. In addition to her abstract pieces, Kahn continues to work in representational art, as well. “It’s risky to be an abstract artist in Steamboat. Most people want something that will tickle their memories of their time here. I love it when people explore New Western art.” Kahn's work is shown locally at the Riverwalk Collective Gallery in the Depot Art Center. 4" x 5" large-format camera – similar to what Tim Zandee uses.

Stepping Into the Image Like vintage wine, the landscape imagery of fine art photographer Tim Zandee is created with archetypal equipment. The rich, vivid color of Zandee’s art is achieved organically through the use of a large-format (4"x5") camera. The opposite of digital photography, large format film photography requires patience, time and experience. While some people shoot 30 digital frames per second, a large-format photographer may shoot 10 images a week. The resulting composition is the gold standard of fine art photography. Patience is rewarded with incomparable detail, color so intense it’s reminiscent of Kodachrome, and the capacity to produce large – even room-size – images. Sizeable imagery is one of the hallmarks of Zandee’s art. “Landscapes look better when they’re bigger,” he says. “You feel like you’re there. The art becomes a conversation piece.” One of Zandee’s recent creations is 19 feet long. It dominates the front room in the Zandee Gallery in Ski Time Square. Zandee’s triptychs, too, can easily serve as the focal point of a room. Zandee has traveled throughout Colorado and the West, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands, the Pacific Northwest and Canada in pursuit of his art. “It’s not that I love photography – I love nature,” Zandee explains, “And photography is the purest form of nature.” Sometimes Zandee gets up in the dark and does “blitzkrieg” hikes to get the perfect picture; other times, it’s as easy as pulling over to the shoulder of the road and setting up his camera. Either way, his artwork has found a home in Steamboat Springs. “Steamboat is an area where people collect Western, contemporary and modern art – all of which is in my gallery,” he says. Some of his newest work was shot at Steamboat Lake in North Routt County and on Dunckley Pass in South Routt County, where the aspen trees are works of art in and of themselves. Zandee opened his gallery in Steamboat last winter. “My heart is out West. I am a mountain guy. I made the plunge,” he says. Despite 14 • Volume 15, Edition 1, 2021

Like any superhero, Garret Bock’s alter ego is fairly unassuming: he is a middle school teacher in Steamboat Springs. But when he’s off the clock, Bock’s superpowers of art and creativity bring the colorful world of comic books to life. Formerly the manager/director of a museum in San Francisco, Bock was able to flex his creativity at that job and build dioramas, test pinball machines, and curate a wide selection of art. When he moved to Steamboat Springs, Bock transferred his skill and creative ability into painting, printmaking and robot-suit-building as part of an ambitious art project he dubbed “Strange Steamboat.” “I make a lot of art, and see what sticks,” Bock says. “I’m constantly working on new stuff – whatever brings enjoyment to others.” When the artist saw that Steamboat’s iconic “dragon car” would no longer be part of the annual Halloween festivities in 2019, he decided to create something new for people to look forward to: intricate, colorful robot suits, constructed out of cardboard and based on Japanese comics. “People loved it,” Bock says. “There was a kid dressed as a knight who kept trying to fight me, but the first suit was poorly built and was falling apart as I was wearing it downtown.” Encouraged by his success, he made two sturdier costumes: one based on Evel Knievel and another on the bright neon-pink Rabbit Ears Motel sign. These creations, especially his robot suits, have been a hit among his students and other Steamboat locals. “One of the funny things is sometimes my students don’t know it’s me, but I call them by name and they say, ‘OMG, the robot knows my name!’” Bock’s art generally draws from the blocky, bright look of ‘80s robot cartoons and comic books – think Transformers, ThunderCats and Japanese mechs. “I think comics are a really accessible style of storytelling and

communicating through images,” Bock explains. “Memes are prevalent these days, and each meme is essentially just a comic book panel.” Bock’s art fuses this style with the quintessential characters and imagery of Steamboat and the Old West. “The storyline is a work in progress,” he says, “But there’s a lot of things in Steamboat that are part of our culture – things like skiing, cowboys, history, nature – those are things that I love and I’m trying to mix my characters with that in some shape or form. We have our own art scene here; sometimes I fit into it and sometimes I don’t. I just want to make things that I love.” One of his art series, located at Big Iron Coffee, depicts historical figures of the Old West battling the monsters of science fiction and urban legends. In one such piece, the Bassett sisters – Northwest Colorado’s heroines who ran with the Wild Bunch and took on Big Cattle – take on Frankenstein’s monster. “Their story has been overlooked, in my opinion,” Bock says. “I think their story is at least as compelling as Butch Cassidy and Billy the Kid.”

Bock previously taught middle school math and science, but will begin teaching art this coming school year. “It’s going to get wacky in my classroom,” he laughs. While he wants to instill a love of art to his classes, he also wants to give each student’s creative style room to breathe. “I definitely want to help them find their own ways of expressing themselves,” Bock says. “No matter your decisions in life, you’re best and most passionate about the ones that you come to on your own. I can show them what I do and if they want to participate in that, that’s awesome. If not, I want to help them find their own way.” Learn more about Garret Bock’s artwork at www.GarretBock.com.

It feels good to be back. To say last year has been an incredibly tough year for live music lovers, artists, and the people who make their living in the industry is a huge understatement. Overnight everything was either postponed or cancelled altogether. Long running reoccurring festivals and events were forced to halt all plans. The stress, financial burden, and emotional toll were immense. At a certain point it felt like live music was cancelled forever. Just as quickly as everything stopped, live music has come roaring back. Bars and local venues are hosting musicians, and local events are making a comeback as well. Strings Music Festival is hosting concerts several nights a week, both inside the pavilion and on an outdoor stage. The beloved Free Summer Concert Series is slated to return on Friday, Aug. 27, at the base

of Howelsen Hill with Buffalo Commons, Jon Stickley Trio and the Lil Smokies; the End of Summer Jam is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 5. Events like Art In the Park featured local musicians showcasing their talent throughout the event. Take a stroll through the Yampa River Botanic Park and you may hear the sweet sounds of the Steamboat Symphony, or the unified choruses of Opera Steamboat, or a local favorite playing for the Music on the Green Concert Series. As things return to how they were before COVID, there is an overwhelming sense of gratitude, appreciation and relief on everyone’s faces, on and off stage. Just go to any live concert in town and you can feel the energy in the air. A renewed feeling of unity amongst the fans, artists and venue staff is more present than ever before. A feeling that we have all overcome a huge obstacle together as one big team. For many of us, this feeling of unity is a big part of why we love live music. You go into a concert alone or with friends, filled with anticipation and excitement. Last year, we all were forced to listen alone in our rooms. You can call it the longest set break in history. For now, it seems we have all made it to the other side, the music is back on and everyone is ecstatic. Let's just hope this feeling never ends, and the music never stops.
