Summa’, Summa’, Summa’ Time! There have been a handful of times where I genuinely felt like my life was in jeopardy. I am not too sure how old I was, still in elementary school for sure, but we used to hit Wild Rivers water park during the summer. There was a man-made river with a slight current that ran throughout the entire park. My first death defying experience happened at Wild Rivers. I decided I was going to not only dive headfirst into the wading river, but also do it into a floating inner tube, obviously trying too hard to show off. I dive and get stuck. As a “husky” lad, only half of my body went through the tube, my legs were out of the water, with the rest of my body submerged. I freak the fuck out, kicking into the air and screaming underwater. Just as I was about to pass out, a pimply-faced kid managed to pop the tube and get me out. EMBARRASSING. My second time flirting with death happened on a camping trip in Mammoth. Despite signs EVERYWHERE that specifically state, “do not leave your food out at night, bears are in the area!” – what did the Gonzales family do? Of course we left our hamburger patties and marshmallows in the cooler right outside our tent as well slept. Enter midnight-ish. Just outside our tent, you could see a MASSIVE shadow slowly moving about. We could literally hear it eating. It was so close you could feel the floor move when walked. Mom, Pop, baby brother Andy, and myself huddle in the center of the tent, terrified. Problem. I sometimes get a

case of the night farts. I’m not proud of it, but it happens. So not only was I crying, petrified I would die at the age of 8 getting mauled by a bear, but even more horrified that it might just be my fart that set him off. Pops managed to get to the car and fired off a warning shot…Yogi ran off into the night with all our food in tow. I survived to become the editor of regional magazine.

You know how older people always tell you to “enjoy being your age’ – I have always had a problem with that. When I was 12, I wanted to be 16 to drive. When I was 16, I wanted to be 18 to stay out passed curfew. When I was 18, I wanted to be 21 to get wasted legally. This morning, like many recently, I woke up and thought, “Holy fuck!” All this wishing for time to hurry the hell up actually happened. Remember summertime? Remember those stupid stories from summer we all have? Remember what it was like to actually know that there was some light at the end of the tunnel? The month of June used to mean hitting the pool or Captain Crunch in your chonies at noon. Now, it’s just the month between May and July. We tried to pack some semblance of summer into these pages for you. Take us with you when you are at the beach, by the pool, or avoiding bears in Mammoth.

At an age where most people retire and start acting like really cute grandparents a 59 year old man in Sweden is going to court for ‘bullying’ his female neighbor. The neighbor had already taken out a restraining order for protection from the man who she claimed was stalking her. But what got him the $2,000 fine for ‘bullying?’ He let loose a bag of killer slugs in her garden. No, really. Slimy slugs.

In Other News With People Old Enough to Know Better Two men, one 54 and the other 45, were charged with hunting wildlife in their residential neighborhood with miscellaneous weaponry. The wildlife they were after? Squirrels (can’t blame them). The weapons? Blow darts and a bow and arrow (okay, that’s just funny). What’s wrong with two good ole boys runnin’ after rodents with a quiver full of deadly arrows and an old-fashioned rubber ball blasting dart gun? I don’t know but the police were ‘concerned’ for the children in the area. Whatever.

Being Emotionally Secure May Be Damaging To Your Health. This theory is backed up by an Israeli psychologist who categorizes people as either having secure or insecure attachments to other people. Those who have insecure attachments detect and react faster to signs of a threat which is a major plus in the sink-or-swim evolutionary argument. People who exhibit secure attachments first consult other people and make a plan involving others and are hampered by all their community welfare tree hugging consideration. Don’t Take Any Chances, Ship Yourself

What Is The Deal With The Tea Party? words by Patrick Douglas

There are few terms that scream “sissy” more than a tea party. Unless, of course, you’re a five-year-old girl with no friends and a hankering for a jolt of caffeine to make your stuffed puppy seem a little more exciting. Seriously, could you imagine hanging with your boys on a Saturday night sipping tea out of expensive china while discussing the results of the day’s college football games? So why are there so many old people picketing across the country behind their militant-like tea party movement? The word “tea” doesn’t actually refer to the drink but is a not-so-clever acronym for Taxed Enough Already. It’s also a not-so-clever ode to the Boston Tea Party of 1773 where colonists fought to put an end to British taxation. I get that. What we’ve found out over the past year is that the organization has become an outlet for mostly well off white folks of Republican affiliation to bitch about the decisions made by the current administration. These are the same people who didn’t seem to mind when George W. Bush was in office and was laying the groundwork for today’s biggest issues. The Tea party movement isn’t just about taxation. They picket for a revolution in the way our Senators and Congressmen conduct their business, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There’s even a list of ten requirements the party preaches in order to fulfill their agenda. They’re so sure of its logistic integrity that it includes things like a simplified tax system where a single-rate tax is instituted and a demand that the current IRS code must be replaced by one that’s no more than 4,543 words. Huh? That doesn’t sound crazy or anything. They also want

10

SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

to force the government to follow a budget. That’s not a bad idea at all. They want the government to find a way to become debt free. You can’t expect results like that by eliminating taxes at the same time. There’s no doubt the system is a cluster fuck but the tea party seems like it was merely created by Republicans who are still bitter about losing control of the White House. This isn’t a new accusation either. They’ll defend their right to protest and deny their obvious party affiliation using Bush-era tactics of uberpatriotism as a mask. “Look at me, I’m patriotic!” “No, I’m more patriotic!” “Fuck you, I make more money!” “No, fuck you, I make more money and I’m gonna complain about being overtaxed in front of the post office tomorrow!” “What time?” Bringing up a movement by colonials who wanted to break free from British rule more than 230 years ago and comparing it to today’s political climate is about as sissy as a real tea party. In that sense, maybe it is aptly named. Patriotism seems to be whatever Republicans deem necessary to conduct their agenda and the tea party is just another example of that. Today, if you organize and complain about the errs of government, you’re a proud American. Does anyone remember what happened in the mid-2000s when artists and musicians complained about the government (see Pearl Jam and the Dixie Chicks)? They were labeled anti-American and unpatriotic and boycotted. Weird how that works.

At least that’s what any citizen who values their life should do because, according to the numbers, FedEx and UPS have much higher requirements for their pilots than regional passenger airlines do. 1,500:250 hours for FedEx and about 5,000:250 for UPS. Both of these companies require that their pilots have a transport license (which you cannot attain without 1,500 hours) but regional airlines do not. Right, because the blanket your grandma is shipping you from Ottawa is totally irreplaceable until garage sale day. Granny, on the other hand, we’ll risk it.

Sea Monsters Are So 2000 and Late According to the UK’s Royal Navy they do not have compulsory rules about logging information about “abnormally large or dangerous sea monsters.” How did this come up? A marine biologist asked the Ministry of Defense for the info on the basis of Freedom of Information. What this paranoid quack should really be concerned about is UFO’s. That is a phenomenon that the military has 50 years of records on; and since they have officially abandoned the search for E.T. someone’s gotta pick up the slack and get that guy back in touch with Spielberg. Who’s ready for E.T. II?

What To Do In A World Where Not Even Seatbelts Are Safe? We have no idea! Despite a study that says drivers wearing their seatbelts were 21% more likely to incur fatal injury because of poor air bag engineering, while unbelted drivers’ survival rate remained constant, experts still encourage drivers to wear the widow-makers. Why? Because not all airbags are designed the same, for all models, for all years and they can’t give blanket advice to consumers. Um, HELLO? Then don’t publish that report, you jerks. Once the people at 20/20 get a hold of this the fit’s going to hit the shan and then maybe we’ll get some advice we CAN use!

On A Rampage

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson Balances Movies And Messing Up Faces words by Eric Bonholtzer photo courtesy of: UFC

It won’t be long until Quinton “Rampage” Jackson appears in the major motion picture, The A-Team, as B.A. Baracus, but while most actors would be satisfied to kick back and see their image appear on the silver screen, Jackson is more than happy to get back to kicking ass. Acting is a full time job, but so is fighting, and unlike the choreographed scenes on-screen, Jackson puts his body on the line when he steps into the cage. “It’s no secret I’ve sustained a lot of injuries,” he explains. And that was why taking the time off to film the A-Team was the perfect respite. “Me taking time off was good for my body. My body was worn out. The fight is different from the movie, but I’ve been training since I got off the set,” he explains, having undergone an intense training camp in preparation for his showdown with hated nemesis “Suga” Rashad Evans last month. Injuries, though, have been an unfortunate staple of Jackson’s career, as long time damage from his time in the UFC and hard fights in PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan have plagued him for years. A lingering jaw injury is the most recent ailment and it kept nagging him until he took time off to film the A-Team and gave himself a chance to recover. “I hurt my jaw a week before the Wanderlei [Silva] fight, so I was glad I took time off. I’m healed, my jaw is good.” While the time off

12

SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

came as a blessing to Jackson, UFC president Dana White was less than pleased when he first heard the news as it meant a prolonged absence from fighting and a postponement of the Rampage-Evans fight. However, after the movie was completed, White couldn’t have been more supportive of Jackson, stating in an interview before the Rampage-Evans event that, “Quinton did a real movie and he got to do a great movie and [the fight with Evans] still worked out because people wanted to see it real bad.” Still, while everything was resolved, there is the very real possibility that another conflict might arise as Jackson’s movie stock will likely rise if The A-Team does well. “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it,” he explains, going on to say, “It was my dream to be affiliated with The A-team and if they do a sequel I’d want to do it.” Still, Jackson cashes hefty paychecks from the fight game. “I fight for money and it’s my job. I’m all about making the most money I can make for my future.” With that kind of statement, it seems Jackson has no intention of forgoing fighting for film, so long as the price is right. For now, he’s content to train, and train like he never has before. With a newfound drive, it’s clear that no matter whether it’s in MMA or the movies, Rampage Jackson is going remain a star.

If this goes over your head consult an elementary school teacher for help. The nearly-pentagonal state of Nevada replaced several signs along their roads which said “Yeild to bikes.” [Intelligent people insert chuckle here] Interestingly, according to the records, Nevada has never sponsored a winner in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in its 84 year history but this year’s spelling gladiator, Dakota Jones, almost certainly would have noticed this error. His middle name is spelled d-a-n-I-E-L. The state department should catch the spelling smack down this June (on ESPN and ABC exclusively) and learn a thing or two! Good luck, Dakota!

If You Are in Florida and Fall Victim to Voodoo... Police in Florida are occasionally called upon to investigate mysterious appearances of colored powder and inexplicable phenomenon that people interpret as malicious voodoo violence. And they have also stopped people in the act of beating evil spirits out of their loved ones, including the near death of a woman at the hands of her boyfriend. What you need to do, in these cases is talk to someone on the ‘inside’ and voodoo priests, while not necessarily in the yellow pages, can be found throughout Florida where Haitians, among others, practice this religion. Call the police and you’re cutting corners.

johannesburg, South Africa The City Of Gold

In Johannesburg, South Africa (Jo’burg, Jozi or eGoli) there is a sense of an acquired melting pot…where disparities collide. This is an entrepreneur’s city that is large enough to make opportunities accessible to anyone who wants to initiate something new. Since coming of age over 100 years ago, it has now developed into a city vaster than London or New York. As the capital of South Africa’s Gauteng region, Jo’burg was initially constructed on the wealthiest gold reef in the world, producing

16

40% of the world’s bullion and has now become the city with the biggest stock exchange in all of Africa. Polished, prevailing skyscrapers fused with 19th century architecture set the mood for this relatively young international city. Its hurried, inventive vigor has gradually given way to contemporary retail, industrial and commercial localities. With a genuine intellectual focus on language, science and the arts, this is more than just the largest city in the country. With over 150 heritage sites, 12 river systems words by Elysia McMahan

SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

running through the land, and 40% of all the world’s human ancestor fossils having been discovered here, this metropolis is fast and in-your-face, as well as a place where the city and its populace do not get in your way, other than having to rub shoulders with the fruits of its labor. Environmental debris, overcrowding, poverty and violence have not prevented this realm from possessing some of the friendliest people or attempting to overcome these hindrances and restore onto itself a little dignity.

Behind the Division Since surmounting onwards from those decades of suffering the indignities and humiliation of racial discrimination, the center of Johannesburg has taken on an African ambiance, again. Although it may seem as if this location possibly lacks a distinguished iconic sight, there is much to see. Constitution Hill Museum offers an outstanding interactive visit to the site of the notorious Number Four prison complex which once processed some 2,000-3,000 black prisoners a day. Two famous inmates included Mahatma Gandi and Nelson Mandela. Lingering on the back of cell doors and on the wall is the original graffiti and visitors can also observe the dark pits where prisoners would spend up to a year in solitary confinement; living off of just rice water. The vibrant Soweto (South Western Townships) is the heartbeat of the nation which has become a symbol of conquest over domination. Nelson Mandela lived here before being sentenced to life imprisonment for treason. Immersed with history of the struggle in opposition to apartheid and breathing with the energy of the city of gold, this place is a must-see for visitors. Due to its immediacy with Johannesburg, it’s one of the most metropolitan townships in the country. Soweto is a site of distinction where strips of tin shanties rest amongst well-appointed mansions; where green fields and unspoiled streams counterbalance heaps of waste and uneven roads. In spite of the towering unemployment rate there still remains a flurry of activity and positive liveliness around every corner. Budget accommodations, heritage sites, and restaurants definitely make it a worthwhile experience to take part in. Gold Reef City Theme Park and Casino is an immense entertainment quarter built on the soil of a former gold mine. Roughly divided into three areas, the chief attraction, other than the largest roller coaster in the southern hemisphere, and its sixty table casino, is the Apartheid Museum. This thought-provoking museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as one of the

most renowned in the world and the first of its kind, exemplifying the rise and fall of apartheid. Amid the highlights is a room where 121 nooses hang from the ceiling, which stand for the 121 political prisoners that were killed during that atrocious moment in time. There are also twenty-two individual exhibitions of photographs, artifacts, and film footage that will take you through the stirring and emotional voyage of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and the resistance of the majority to defeat tyranny. If you’d like to grasp a better understanding of the origin of Jo’burg and the base of its wealth in the early 20th century, take a tour down into the old mine shaft to see how gold was mined from 1887-1971. With an elevator ride, you are taken 200m (656ft) below the surface where workers once toiled, sweated and died. Here you are free to walk through the old pits and shafts. Legend has it that if you can pick up a gold bar with one hand (gold bars are poured once a day) you are permitted to take it home with you!

A Phoenix Rising From the Ashes Once a downtown slum, Newtown is a village in South Africa located in Region 8 that is at present undergoing drastic alterations; turning itself into a vivacious spot with exceptional cultural facilities, such as Mary Fitzgerald Square and the Nelson Mandela

Bridge. Creative expression of the arts, architecture and activities can be found here and are ornately represented in the workshops, theatres, museums and buildings of this historically magnetic area. Situated in the heart of Johannesburg in the Newtown Cultural Precinct, SAB World of Beer is unlike anything you’ll ever experience elsewhere. Opening its doors almost ten years ago by Nelson Mandela, it has grown remarkably and has become a prevalent attraction. Its full-scale brew house discloses the minutiae of the brewing method. The World of Beer reveals the history of SAB, as well as the history of beer itself since the ancient times. Luscious lunches and panoramic views of the city are available to you in the Tap Room where you can also take pleasure in a tumbler or two of your choice of brew. This glorious keepsake is within walking distance of the major railway stations and is well-situated on one of the main taxi routes contained in the city. Just bear in mind that you should always enjoy responsibly and avoid excessive alcohol consumption and you’re certain to have an incredible time. Other spots of interest in the culturally diverse and alive Newtown Precinct are the world famous Market Theatre which served as a produce market for over 60 years and became a focal point for local artists and in time gained an international reputation as the “Theatre of the Struggle”, Oriental Plaza with its unique shopping experience, Horror Cafe (music and street poetry), Songwriter’s Club, Newtown Music Centre and the Bassline.

Brilliant Glitter of Night-Time The nightlife in Jo’burg has a mesmerizing effect, like the moon when it emerges from behind the clouds. Johannesburg knows all about painting the town

red or gold, as they’d probably prefer. The scene is animated and dynamic. From sheebeens (illicit bars), to elaborate cocktail lounges and clubs, this city has a little something for everybody. Melville/Brixton may be one of the most common places to visit; with dozens of modest bars in and around Seventh Street. After dark more prosperous party goers tend to favor Norwood, Orange Grove and Rosebank, but Monsoon Lagoon is one place offering gaudy décor, high-tech sound equipment and a squad of professional performers willingly dancing on podiums for your pleasure. One of the favored venues for raves is Reality, which has three dance floors and offers a blend of hip hop, house and drum and bass. It is not recommended to travel alone in Soweto and it is highly advised to go with a local or to explore with a “Shebeen Crawl”. Upon exploring the sinister night life, The Rock is one of Soweto’s trendiest clubs with a roof deck and a large bar and dance floor. There is generally no firm licensing hour so countless clubs remain open all night and since the legal drinking age is eighteen, they’ll be plenty of young night owls out simply awaiting the sunrise before calling it quits and ending up with a “babbelas” (hangover). And just like “a prostitute who dresses up every evening”, this city becomes something glamorous, glittering and glowing with lights when the sun dims down.

Now We Are Getting Se-ri-aas Chosen to host the biggest event in the world, the 2010 FIFA World Cup (held every 4 years), Johannesburg’s stadiums are being refurbished and its pubs are stocking up on the good stuff. There are seven stadiums available just for this one month affair from June 11th-July 11th. Thirty-two teams will be arriving to compete for the Cup and this year is supposed to be the year that we predicted we’d come

closest to winning, even though we’re still getting dominated by the European and South American teams. Hopefully, we’ll make it out of the group stage, if not much further. Netherlands is looking to be the dark horse, since they have a talented team but no one pays much attention to them. While Spain, with their passing, tends to be the most talented. Brazil and Italy have continuously been on the forefront of their game but perhaps this year the U.S. will put to use all that 90’s training camp and elite program business and we’ll see some sort of victory. Now that Eugene Terreblanche has been murdered, you bet there’s going to be unrest in South Africa. Although, it’s unlikely that such an occurrence should prevent this event from taking place or cause people to yield from traveling due to their safety. Either way, there’s one thing for sure, as Mike McGinty proudly affirms, “All of us soccer fanatics can’t wait to be drunk for an entire month!” Cheers to that.

With A Decade in the Past Apparently, South Africa still seems to straddle on the edge of what is a developed and a still developing nation. While a wealthy minority benefits from their living standards analogous to Rodeo Drive’s residents, they coexist next to an insolvent black majority. The disparities in wealth are unlike any other country, well, except for Brazil. It is thoroughly understandable why this magical country will need another generation or so to reverse its cruel economic legacies. But this is the rapture…because Jozi is real. A city of innumerable contrasts where the evidence of grand wealth and immense poverty rest side by side next to the blossoms on the trees, the rain and the electric storms of this city. Like Los Angeles, this is a sprawling landscape geared to the freeway-intuitive motorist. As with any foreign place, visitors should be streetsmart. Take reasonable precautions and advice from “trustworthy” locals. Come on over, they’re waiting for you.

LEAVING A

LASTING LEGACY Former World Skateboarding Champion Dennis Martinez Is Off The Streets for Good words by: Ramon Gonzeles

For those unfamiliar with the history of skateboarding, the name Dennis Martinez wouldn’t ring much of a bell. For the names grabbing headlines and magazine covers now, Dennis Martinez remains one of the sports most formidable personalities and an undeniable influence. During the birth of modern skateboarding, Martinez was shredding and would not only help revolutionize the sport, but he would cement incredible success before he could legally by a beer. Between sponsorships, demos all over the country, fame, fortune, and success, Martinez would fall victim to the clutches of addiction. His story would go from bowls and skate decks, to prison bars, hospital beds, drug dens, guns, and despair. In 1996, Martinez would begin his road to redemption and has not looked back since. As he begins a new television show following convicts looking to make good, his story reminds us all that it is never too late to make a change. Tell me about your early years on a skateboard. It was more than skating, you were one of the few guys that not only watched it grow, but helped make it a lifestyle, not just a hobby. How did you get involved in skateboarding? During the early years skating was true fun, before it got serious and turned into a business. Skateboarding back then was more like a family, team comradierie. Team Bahne had practice every week and you couldn’t miss it. We took it seriously. One early summer coming home from summer school I saw this dude riding a skateboard doing a handstand. That was something that floored me. I wanted that. Even though I didn’t invent the sport, I help developed it with so many great skaters who loved the sport like me. From steel wheels to clay to urethane,

20

from skinny boards to fat boards, that was the era that launched skateboarding. Before you were even out of high school you were buying cars in cash and paying a full year’s worth of rent on your own apartment. Do you think had the success not come so fast that maybe life would have been different for you? Being at such a young age, focused, with this unstoppable attitude, nothing was going to stop me. When I found out that you could get paid for something that you’d do for free…It was on. The trick was to get as many sponsors paying you, magazine photos, commercials, ecetera.Things could of turned out differently had I had real friends back in the day tell me the truth about drugs. I’m not blaming

anybody but myself, but I know that things might of been different if I wasn’t such a fool. Seeing my peers, the lifestyle, I wanted that at any cost. But young and dumb led me down a path of hell. You talk about how drug use for you started casually, but it would later consume your life. Were there ever any moments where you thought, this is starting to get out of hand? Dope at first was never a thought until I started skating. Being around it, seeing the cool guys (get high), I wanted to fit in. Peer-pressure was all around me, the best of the best. When I started to need massive amounts to go on a trip, when I couldn’t even show up at demos because I was to high to qualify, that’s when I began to see that my

life was taking a turn for the worst. I didn’t care. Then the needle came into my life and I married it; loved it so much that it became my life. I have read interviews where you talk about having to compete high. Did people around you know that at the time? Were you high when you won the world championship? Look EVERYONE was getting high. Well a few smart ones weren’t, like Stacy Peralta. Competing high was the in thing, made you have no fear. Sometimes it got so bad that we would miss the contest. I watched World Champion Bruce Logan be contained to a hotel room because he was so high. But I’m so proud of Bruce now, a true champion because he overcame the addiction. I never skated sober during a contest, ever. Never skated sober, period. Had to have it silly rabbit, I was out of control. A pivotal story in your life seems to be the one where you sold your World Championship trophy for $500 dollars worth of dope. When you realized what you did, when did the regret set in? What was going through your mind? I think back a lot on my history I sold for the dope. Anger ran through my mind for being so stupid and controlled by a substance. I always say, nobody ever stole my crown but a powdery white substance and a piece of plastic with metal on the end. My Championship trophy deemed priceless, I put a price on it. Today I ask people how much are you worth? Priceless. You turned from selling your personal treasures to stealing and committing crimes to feed your addiction. Can you tell me about the first crime you committed? What was going through your head? How did you feel after you did it? Touchy subject because I’ve committed so many crimes and now as I look back, I’m truly ashamed. Started off stealing bikes, then cars, then jewelry, then guns, then well, let’s stop there. Here’s how it goes. I had to rob to get the money, to get the dope, to get the needle, to get the hotel room, to get the girl - The bigger the crime, the bigger the high, the bigger the rush. People say change happens only when it HAS to; only when someone hits rock bottom. What was that moment for you? What happened in 1996 that made you say, “I’m done.” Change only happens when you change. Talk of change is only talk. In 1996, I looked in the mirror and was honest with myself. I said who am I? What am I? I was a junkie and a criminal. I hit rock bottom so many times but this one last run spooked me. I thought I killed someone. I’d been up for weeks, wasn’t in my right mind. One right decision changed my life forever as did one wrong choice destroyed it. Best choice I ever made was giving my life to Christ. I’m not ashamed. I have life today because of Him.

After being involved in the film D.O.P.E. (Death or Prison Eventually), what kind of reaction did you receive? Did people, fans look at your differently?

Off The Street was written to raise funds to help convicts, drug addicts, alcoholics who had no money to pay for vital services. We use the very thing society calls the “ain’t gonna amount to nothing” outcasts to win back what was stolen. Kinda like the snake venom that is used to make the antidote. Not just a reality show, OTS is a real working diversion program reaching the youth. The statistics show that people return to jail instead of get rehabilitated. Does that weight ever make going into work difficult? NO. I love what I do because early on my desire was to give back. I started my little brother at the age of 9, getting him high.Thinking it was funny, not knowing that for the next 30 years he would struggle with drug addictions and crime. My little brother went to prison 2 times. My best friend Paul Dornberg is doing 678 years. We were doing crime together at one time. These guys coming from prison and the streets are priceless. Seeing them get their lives back, get their wives back, get their children back and never go back to prison is worth every moment. I’m the richest man in the world.

“My Championship trophy deemed priceless, I put a price on it. Today I ask people how much are you worth? Priceless.” Dennis Martinez

D.O.P.E. was created by a group of people who believed in the project. Michael Clifford, Chris Ahrens of Risen Magazine did a great job writing it. BFC did a great job filming it and many great editors. The best part for me though is Bruce Logan, Jay Adams, Christian Hosoi, Rodney Mullen, and my family and everyone in it. The story is great, soundtrack is off the chart, with a great ending. People did look at me differently. A lot of people didn’t know about my life when I became a Christian. I didn’t boast about myself. I told the truth. The people in it told a true story. Its been a great tool to help people, to give hope. You have developed a reality show called Off The Street that chronicles what happens as inmates hit the streets after doing time. How did the idea for the show develop?

Do you feel like the system is failing? You have seen and been through it first hand. Do you think the correctional system is lacking in the correction aspect? Look everyone wants to blame someone. It starts first with the individual. The system has failed because man has failed. God’s way has always been the right way. But I work with the prison systems, police, gang commission, sheriffs, parole board, probation and there is a lot of unreal people who really care. So as a team we are winning. Considering that skateboarding introduced you to the side of life that nearly killed you, do you miss it? Do you still consider yourself a skater? Skateboarding didn’t kill me, Dennis Martinez did. Dope didn’t kill me, Dennis Martinez did. I am and always will be a skater, even if I don’t skate all the time. I skate in the prisons. To them I’m still a champion. For athletes, legacy is always important. What do you want your legacy to be both as an athlete and as a man? As a skater, I was known as an all around skater. Not too many skaters can do all around; I mean really do great all around. Some are only great on half pipes but no good in pools. Some are great on the street but no good in freestyle. As a man, I want to be remembered as an obedient man of God. Helping people make it in life is what I want to be remembered by, an all around good guy. If you had to go back and do it all over again...the highs of being the best in the world in the bowl, the thrill of competition, the historical times of the Z-Boys era changing skateboarding, would you? Heck yeah! I’d do it right, no dope, own my own company, be a Christian, and the best role model. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?

Jason Overell Talks Targa Triple Crown 2010 words by: Ramon Gonzeles

ELLIS LINKS UP WITH PETA Pro-Skater, MMA trainee, Sirius Satellite talk show host, and frontman of the metal band Taintstick, Josh Ellis can now add one more title to the vast array already in his dominion: animal rights activist. Ellis teamed up with PETA to raise youth awareness on the subject and together they’re giving away autographed skate decks and Taintstick t-shirts when you register for the drawing on Peta2’s website www.peta2.com. I’ll give him this: he sure knows how to stick it to the jerks sticking it to our helpless furry friends, so in our book, that makes him OK!

DIRT DOCUMENTARY

300 miles for each of the 3-days in the Triple Crown Series will ensure a few things…almost 100 luxury, high performance vehicles slicing through the streets, countless automotive enthusiasts joining in the festivities, and despite its billing as an automotive lifestyle event, a finish line that will indeed fuel the competitive drive for each of the participants firing up an engine. The man behind this celebration of horsepower is Jason Overell.“Targa Trophy is not a race and it never has been. Targa Trophy is an automotive lifestyle event. It’s a rally event in the most traditional sense, which means we have designed it to comply with the rules of the road and added a time and distance component that makes this a driving challenge. We are very clear to all participants upon registering that this is not a speed contest or wheel to wheel racing event. This is an event that requires real driving and navigational skill while adhering to the rules of the road.” With events throughout the summer in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Scottsdale, AZ., motor sport enthusiasts will get the chance to showcase some of the automotive industry’s finest craftsmanship while navigating to checkpoints and crossing the finish line. So if it isn’t a race or based on speed, how does this work? Overell explains how Targa requires some real chops behind the wheel. “Targa Trophy is a driving challenge. You could almost consider it a game. Driving skill and navigational prowess are key to doing well. We create challenging driving routes that most people would not dream of tackling in one day. Just ask some of the teams that drove in our Finale event last year. We are the only lifestyle rally event series in North America and the only one that gives these drivers an objective and something to really drive towards. With $100,000 in prizes up

for grabs over three events and accumulative point standings that creates a friendly rivalry/competition, we have created our own profile in the genre.” Aside from the competition and the inevitable adrenaline rush that can only come with maneuvering hundreds of horses through the concrete jungle, The Targa Trophy is really predicated on the kind of enthusiasm that resonates throughout the entire automotive community. The excitement has resulted in the sports’ most respected names rubbing elbows with fresh faces. “We have been really fortunate that we have a great group people that are big time supporters of Targa Trophy. From rally veterans like the infamous Bill Wu, to historic rally guys like Patrick Van Schoote, to new guys that have gravitated to the rally lifestyle such as Aaron Guardado, Steve Goldfield,The Medina Brothers, and Bijan Gharavi. Most people probably don’t know who these guys are, but they are some of the influencers that push the lifestyle.” Partnering with standard-setting W Hotels, an undeniable cool factor comes into play. Once competitors cross the finish line, the after party is hosted in the finest of fashion, as sponsors, participants, and spectators join together to experience the luxury element that seems to go hand in hand with the road rally. Although Overell will not deny the event comes with its fair share of indulging, there should be no question what the priority is, “…do some research on our event and ask some previous rally participants about their experience and they will testify to the actual driving skill required to be competitive. That isn’t to say that these guys don’t enjoy a good party….It’s all part of the lifestyle.” www.targatrophy.com

Thirty years ago, before Carmichael and before Stewart, the 1980 U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross at Carlsbad saw one of the single most shocking upsets in motocross history, as San Diego privateer Marty Moates swept both motos to become the first American to win the U.S. 500cc Grand Prix. The event which changed the face of American motocross will be celebrated as Todd Huffman and his crew immortalize the moment with a feature-length documentary about “the greatest day ever,” which will debut on June 22-the thirtieth anniversary of the event at Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego.

R.I.P. NOEL ROBINSON The surf community once again reluctantly said goodbye to one of its own beloved this month when news broke that well-known big wave charger, ESPN Surfing Contributor, and professional surf photographer Noel Robinson had passed away in a surfing accident earlier in the month. Robinson had been in Puerto Escondido, Mexico earlier this month, charging waves that weren’t out of his realm of expertise however, for reasons unknown, after charging one particularly “benign” wave, Robinson seemingly disappeared and did not resurface for over an hour. If there’s any solace to be had in losing a decent man, I guess it can be found in knowing that Robinson died while doing what he loved most; he will be missed.

Ask Questions Be Critical Be Fair Against Me!’s Tom Gabel Will Appreciate You For It.

Words by: David Carr

Ahh punk rock. How well we thought we knew you. In recent years the idea of what is and isn’t punk has been the fodder for much debate. On one side you have the young angst ridden, tight jean wearing, and melodies for days emo kiddies. On the other end of the spectrum you have the grizzled veterans with ripped t-shirts and Doc Martins, itching to slam dance at the drop of a hat. Some where in the middle (but leaning towards veterans status) is Against Me! Against Me! forgot about coming to the party with pretty haircuts but decided to concentrate more on how to write a damn good song. They are on a major label but they won’t shy away from giving their opinion on the American political landscape. The world of punk is lucky to have Against Me! around and the band is gearing up for a long, hot, politically-charged, punk rock summer, chock full of festivals shows and preaching their gospel. “I really like playing festivals” relates Tom Gabel, lead vocalist/guitarist for Against Me! “It’s really the only time I get to see bands live. Plus the vibe at a festival is so much different than at a regular show. It’s like a true gathering for an event.” Gabel and his bandmates will be hitting the festival circuit this summer in support of their latest disc, White Cross, which drops June 8th. When asked to describe what influenced the writing on his latest disc, Gabel pauses and with a sigh, emphatically states, “In a lot of ways this is a very introspective record. We went to our home state to record this record and we were recording just as the economic collapse happened, so that really informed the writing on the record. Florida is a very culturally diverse area and it’s almost like the south meets the Caribbean in some respects… there is a lot of

Florida in this record.” The first single off of the new disc “I Was A Teenage Anarchist” may have fans thinking that Tom (29) might be getting jaded with regards to his left leaning political stance. The singer/songwriter is quick to quash such speculation. “Not at all” Tom exclaims with a sense of urgency. “The song is actually about the opposite of that feeling. It’s the opposite of being jaded. The song is about holding on to the beliefs, principles and idealism that got you into politics. It’s about holding on to those ideas that made you think you could change the world as a kid. I got into anarchist politics when I was fifteen years old. I became an activist in my twenties… it’s about holding on to that original spark that led you to become an activist.” Gabel still indeed has that spark and it shows not only in the music of Against Me! but also in how he views the current political climate of the day. When asked to give his take on the political discourse of the current time, Gabel simply states, “I’m only 29, but I really can’t remember an election in my time when the opposition that lost seemed to just stick around, not go anywhere and become more vocal! Usually after an election the losing party just disappears but these guys have just stuck around and are more vocal now than when they were in power! I mean, Dick Cheney? What the hell, he is still around and more prominent than ever! In my opinion the country is more divided than ever! It’s really depressing and frightening.” Gabel pulls no punches in letting his thoughts and feelings be heard, but one has to wonder if left leaning punk rockers are hard pressed to criticize the president. George Bush Jr. was an easy target for many in the world of political music. Do folks like Gabel find it hard to come out swinging against a

guy they kind of want to like? Gabel exclaims, “I think it’s important to have a balance. I saw the election of Barrack Obama as a very positive step in the right direction but his election is not the end of the story. Will he be a great president? Only time will tell. For now, I’m not sure. We must be fair, be critical and we must always ask questions. I mean honestly, I still really don’t understand the healthcare bill that was passed. I am not sure how it will affect me and I believe it won’t even affect me until 2014 right? If that’s the case then what the fuck…why don’t we have universal health care, HA?!!?” Gabel is serious about his politics and equally serious about his songwriting. When asked to name check those that influenced him the most with regards to songwriting, Gabel answers, “Joe Strummer and Paul Westerberg have had a huge influence on me. Everyone in the band, are huge fans of the Clash and The Replacements…they were both two totally different bands but they were both very ambitious in their own way when it came to songwriting.” Gabel’s own band has seen some changes in recent years. The group has a new drummer (George Rebelo replaced out going Warren Oakes) and the group almost broke up while dealing with life on a massive touring schedule. Gabel laments, “A band is a living, breathing, complex relationship…you just have to keep working at it…Warren’s leaving was kind of a long time coming. He just didn’t want to do it anymore. Believe it or not the transition from Warren to George was smooth. We have known him for years and he is just a kick ass drummer in my opinion so it was easy. Again, it’s a relationship like any other and you just have to keep at it.”

Call IT What You Want...

Kate Nash Is Just Having Fun With It words by: Alex Mendoza photo by: Clare Nash

Upon listening to the opening seconds of Kate Nash’s “Do-Wah-Doo”, you’re immediately disarmed. And for good reason. The word “pop” is attached to this girl’s resume and “pop” is a rather broad term – especially in respects to the mainstream avenues most casual listeners tend to explore. The mental checklist of exactly what a hit single entails immediately appears – Everyday phrases turned into electronic-fused anthems of drunken bliss, dealing with the existential angst tied to a poor girl who regrets bringing her cell phone to the club, or an entourage of high-stakes players bragging about their ability to make any lady’s bed rock. But this song is different. ‘60s-style pop melodies instantly replace the list and you’re captivated by the warm harmonies and sweet simplicity of the music. Her lyrics, though, present an interesting paradox. The melodies are positive and upbeat, but the subject matter deals with the darker side of the emotional spectrum. Think of The Smiths, Morrissey or The Cure – musicians keen on creating harmony out of two opposing forces. It’s not an easy act to follow without coming off as a blatant copycat, but because of Kate Nash’s honest delivery and good-natured disposition you’re left with no doubts about her innate talent. Also, her lyrics do not always resort to sulking. Compared to her last album where she wore her heart on her sleeve, Nash presents a sense of ambiguity and a profound sense of maturity for a young woman who is all of twenty-two years old. “One of the main reasons I wanted to explore other things to sing or talk about was because I had grown older. In between when I wrote the first album and when I wrote this one was a large window of time. Within that frame were all these experiences and they influenced me in terms of giving myself the time and freedom to

26

• SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

be confident and explore,” Kate’s British accent translates well across the phone. Soft, simple and sweet. Think the girl next door, but with a rad British accent you can’t help but find charming.

either reach the same level of success, or go even further. For me, though, I think it’s important to be honest and respectful of the fans, but not be afraid to take risks either.”

“I wanted to grow as a musician and just take time to find out who I was and where I was going. I had toured so much for the first album and dealing with all this stuff can get overwhelming at times. Obviously I am thankful, but I think me taking time to just have fun for a bit allowed me to be creative without any sense of restraint. That was something that was really beneficial to the entire process in working on this album.”

“Mansion Song” definitely provides an entirely different approach than usual – Kate Nash’s visceral take on poetry. Rather than provide melodies and something the listeners can hum on their way home, the background music of some unknown Opera star provides an eerie background as Kate unleashes a poetic barrage of anger and unabashed realism. The words are so precise in capturing the images of a broken female status in this modern age and the emotional response is irrefutable, but doesn’t scream deliberate feminism. It reads more like the heart-aching pages of a misunderstood girl who is persistently objectified and wishes to find some sense of acceptance and an increasingly apathetic society.

Kate Nash took it upon herself to aid with charity work for the Wish Center in London (which helps people who deal with self-harm), as well as rent out a rehearsal room for several months. It was during these months she decided to learn how to play other instruments such as the bass guitar and drum set. Amidst all that she found time to join a Punk band called The Receeders, which originally started as a harmless conversation between bassist Jon Jackson and guitarist Brett Alaimo. She inquired about joining and they jokingly agreed. Then during the months of her rehearsal room occupation she called her band mates up and actually decided to toy with the idea of being in a Punk band. “It was something we did for fun. That was really important – having fun and going all out. That’s how it has to be for me and my music. It has to be something I believe in, because then if it was anything else but perfect I would be so disappointed with myself. I wouldn’t support what I was doing because it wouldn’t be to the best of my ability,” Kate says in a passionate tone. “I wouldn’t be able to bear to promote it myself, nor would I expect my fans to do the same. Obviously there’s pressure from all ends to

Yet it’s Kate’s ability to juggle the dead-serious emotional weight of songs like “Mansion Song” in one track and then effortlessly transition to become an alluring chanteuse in emotionallycharged songs such as “Later On”. Her vocal range is astounding, using it to great effect in “Later On” where she takes boundless leaps towards the stratosphere – never showing the slightest sign of restraint. Her voice is the ideal image for her spirit – easy and carefree, but never afraid to venture on all the aspects that make us human. Each of her subjects is frighteningly real and within each person she attempts to project there is a genuine lyrical empathy. She’s makes you believe she’s been every one of these people – and even if this isn’t really the case, or intent – she damn well makes you believe every heartbreaking word.

The documentary is based on the title of his 1973 album, which focuses on Harrison’s search for balance in the physical and spiritual kind.

The House That Love Built KasKade Finds Success In The Simplest Of Places words by: Lauren Felechner

His music can be described as “haunting,” “mysterious,” “sexy” and “seductive,” and although the world may know him as Kaskade, the world-renowned House DJ that can pull crowds by the thousands, his family knows him as Ryan Raddon; the man who will come home and take out the trash and wash the dirty dishes. Yes, those same hands that cranked tunes good enough to earn him a coveted residency at the Wynn in Las Vegas, have scrubbed dishes clean just like the rest of us. Kaskade has recently released his sixth studio album called Dynasty, where he pulled bits of inspiration from such Southern California dance staples as the Electric Daisy Carnival, while performing in front of 70, 80, 90 thousand fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum. “The Dynasty is kind of where we’ve come, it’s this underground music and it’s not supported by radio or anything but yet look what we’ve created. All those people celebrating the same thing and even though it’s underground we’ve been able to find each other and love the same thing,” Raddon explained. Falling in love with the music, the then 14-year-old Chicago native knew that when he moved to Salt Lake City, if he wanted to become a participant in this musical movement he was going to have to play a bigger role in the scene. Looking back now, Ryan knows that if he had stayed in Chicago, he would have just become another “casual listener.” “I knew I had to create my own scene if I wanted to be involved with this,” the DJ explained. Ryan’s vocabulary contains such descriptions as “euphoric” and “heartfelt,”

28

SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

which likely expected from a House DJ, but not one that chooses not to participate in the more lacivious side of the scene. Never feeling the need to be under the influence to enjoy or produce amazing music, he just acknowledged it nonchalantly and remained optimistic that perhaps the Coliseum full of listeners dancing is doing just that.”I’m still under the hope that not everyone is flying out of their head,” Raddon laughed. Kaskade has become a global phenom in the DJ booth, with his name appearing on big-time rosters such as Winter Music Conference in Miami, Carnival in Rio and his high profile Sunday residency at Wynn Las Vegas. He’s something like The Beatles in Taiwan as riot police had to be present, however, this man doesn’t need charging herds of fans to feel like he has made it. Sitting in a cafe eating a sandwich while the table next to him is talking about how stoked they are to go see his sold-out show that night, without being noticed, or hearing the guy behind him on the plane listening to “Move For Me” on his headphones reminds Raddon of what an influence in this so-called “underground” world he really is. Love started out as the driving force in Kaskade’s musical career and he continues to see the love grow with every album and the progression of the music. “This is what my career has been about for the past 10 years is helping people participate in this weekly ritual and that translates into my singing and writing about love on the albums,” Raddon explained. It’s time to move, but maybe with a little more conviction this time.

Brandon Flowers of Killers fame is getting busy creating his first solo album with Jenny Lewis. The rest of the squad decided to take an indefinite hiatus after their last tour. Many of the songs that are featured on the record were once meant to be Killers tracks. Flowers insist that this is not the end of the Killers, too bad.

Pregnant or Not, Duty Calls No Doubt is back in the studio recording their first album since 2001’s Rock Steady. They took to the medium of celebrities, Twitter, to tell fans they were back in the studio. While some members of the band originally began writing material in February while Stefani was pregnant with her second child, they have decided to refocus and start with a clean slate.

The Westboro Baptist Church, known for their zealous tirades and tasteless protests at funerals and abortion clinics, decided they would picket outside of Ronnie James Dio’s funeral services on May 30. FOR THE CONTINUED... RECORD Say It Ain’t Suge

FICTION REFORM __________________________________________________________________________________________ words by Ramon Gonzales

Assembled from former members of Bullet Treatment,The Last Gang,Vendetta Valentine, Aerodone, and This Is My Empire, FICTION REFORM, emerges as a promising reminder that boisterous rock music has not entirely succumb to marketing gurus or hipster dismantling. Fronted by the unwavering Brenna Red, FR’s approach to rock music is anchored by their ability to remain catchy, without sounding pussy. No pun intended. Releasing Revelation In The Palms of the Weak this spring, months before the band had any single in rotation anywhere, the teaser single FR released on the band’s Myspace page, “Small Silhouette,” was requested for licensing by sports network authority ESPN. The inadvertent single, would then wind up in the rotation on The FACTION, the widely popular rock radio station on both XM and Sirius Satellite radio providers. These seasoned musicians prove their chops by never straying too far from pop sensibility, while never being afraid to go a little apeshit in the delivery. The fact about FICTION REFORM is that they are one of few bands that have figured out you need both to stick.

Founder of the greatest gangsta rap label in the fucking world, Death Row Records, Suge Knight is yet again in trouble with the law. Word is he assaulted a possible business partner with a gun, though no gun was found. Knight is apparently working on regaining his footing in the entertainment world after going bankrupt. Reality TV might even be a possibility. I’m crying.

No Musica In Arizona Several big time artists have decided to begin canceling shows in the state of Arizona to protest the new immigration law that is stirring loaded of emotion both in opposition and in favor. Pitbull, Cypress Hill, Jenni Rivera, Wisin & Yandel are among some of Latin music’s biggest names to skip the AZ. NOw if we can just get folks like Shakira to stop thinking we care about what she has to say about the subject we should be good.

Might Idol Be At It’s End?

Flashback heart attack __________________________________________________________________________________________ words by Ramon Gonzales

Normally, the novelty of a cover band comes in one of two forms, either they are so terrible they are great, or so great at imitation, they are downright creepy. In either case, the mistake MOST cover bands make is in taking what they do way too seriously. Enter FLASHBACK HEART ATTACK.Adorned in red leather lounge suits, skinny ties, and god awful haircuts, FBHA takes a cue from the enigmatically successful STEEL PANTHER, by combining some gut-busting comedy with guilty pleasures we all can sing along to from the golden age of all things tacky. Men Without Hats, Loverboy, Naked Eyes, FBHA pulls off note for note renditions to indulge your need for the occasional one hit wonder. In the same set, the band will take on challenges from immortalized acts like Depeche Mode, New Order, and the Sex Pistols with seamless transition. Some vulgarity, the occasional self-deprecating reference, and rest assured, EVERY crowd is eating out of their hands. A new wave cover band is nothing original, but the notion of having fun at a live show is something that has lost its freshness. FBHA manages to show their talents and personalities all at once to ensure asses are shaking and faces are smiling.

Here are a few facts. American Idol has officially waved goodbye to Simon Cowell with this season’s finale. No more degradation; which was honestly, the real reason we watched. Another fact, not since 2004 have the ratings been so slim. Approaching season 9, might the show that changed music be done. Well, when all that’s left is a confused black dude, an annoying wench, a metrosexual, and Ellen, the end is near. One can only hope.

KEEPIN’ IT REEL words by Cookie Sanchez

Crowe Moving Forward With Marvin? With the project coming to a halt amidst reports that Will Smith turned down the role as iconic soul singer Marvin Gaye, new reports are mentioning Terrance Howard as the next in line for the role. Director Cameron Crowe will helm the biopic, but Howard is understandably hesitant telling Deadline, “Everyone who loves music will hate me if I get this one wrong.”

Facebook and Fincher In The Fall Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Benjamin Button, Zodiac) has directed what is likely to be a surprisingly successful, comedy, of all genres. Based on the 2009 book, The Accidental Billionaires:The Founding Of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, The Social Network is the big screen adaptation of the inception of Facebook.

Aaron Green, a lowly intern for a music company who is ordered to accompany Aldous Snow (Brand) an out of control rock star who is equal parts Keith Moon and Keith Richards. This is a buddy comedy about a larger-than-life musician who has hit bottom, and despite his success is deeply unhappy until a normal guy reminds him that being a jerk isn’t enough. The chemistry is certainly there, with zany (and sometimes bathroom and bedroom) humor to gross you out, entertain you, or both. A bit of a spin off from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Hill once again moves into the starring role and shines while inciting some hilarious side aches.

Ondine Release Date: June 4th Studio: Magnolia Pictures An Irish fisherman who catches a selkie, a kind of water-living spirit resembling a mermaid, and falls in love with her. Soon, the whole village is wondering about this strange person in their midst and fantasy turns to horror when her boyfriend shows up to threaten everyone. This film is a huge nod to Irish and Welsh folklore, where fantastic spirits occasionally bump up to normal people, with terrifying results. This remains a beautiful film. Expectations will easily be exceeded with this trip of a flick.

Release Date: June 11th Studio: 20th Century Fox The A-Team blows up everything, with action scenes that deliver the adrenaline in proper doses. This film is a homage to the original, and now laughably ridiculous, television show, with just enough camp and seriousness mixed with precise care to tell you, “Hey, don’t get too serious, we are having a good time here!” Quinton Jackson is solid in his first big movie role and with Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper on the bill, the over-thetop action is cemented with great performances.

The A-Team

The Killer Inside Me is a creepy noirthriller about a small-time, folksy sheriff, who has the ability to bore the piss out of you in a conversation but is actually a brilliant serial killer who is plotting. Casey Affleck is flawless as Lou Ford. This movie is an extremely accurate portrayal of the orginal book by Jim Thompson. Appropriately brutal, this chilling film might not be for the squimish as some of what Ford does makes anything Hannibal Lector did look folksy. words by Jasen T. Davis

Gothic romance is making a comeback. The genre that has given us chills and cliff hanging tales has a new attitude. This film, a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma, lacks all the dumbed down clues of an Angela Lansbury episode and is laced with real, intense drama, not melodrama. As the protagonists race to solve the case of a disappearing killer they give new life to the noir. Thank Goth.

Release Date: June 29th Studio: Overture Films

Release Date: June 15th Studio: Oscillioscope Labratories

The only thing better than a dated horror movie is a REMAKE! That is if you’re 15 and don’t have anything better to do with $10 and two hours. For everyone else, you can skip this. Horror may never go away, because ‘surprisingly’ it’s profitable, but this is another example of been-there-done-that horror rehash that simply doesn’t need to be revisited - even for nostalgia.

It’s Fahrenheit 451, but it’s not fiction. At a time when Burma was closed off from the foreign press and the internet, a league of video journalists (VJ’s) struck back against the regime that sought to hide them from the world. These brave journalists taped the conflicts between the military and the oppressed Burmese people and smuggled their footage out at the risk of torture and death. Skip your history class and watch this real-life, real-current history in the making.

This won’t go over with those opposed to fecal humor but will get nods from Tim Burton fans that prefer a little gritty punch in their adult anime.

BITS & BYTES Heavy Rain Movie? For those who have been fortunate enough to play Heavy Rain will agree that the inspiration from grisly serial killer films lingers about; especially from the classic David Fincher film, Seven. If they manage to get David Fincher (one can dream, right?) then that would definitely be an eyeopener.

Good Westerns are hard to come by. Rockstar, however, has earned the title with its epic tale set against the backdrop of the Wild West. The game delivers an in-depth and challenging story, along with a swell of extra-side missions for those who wish to deviate from the main campaign. The experience is wholly authentic and places itself among Rockstar’s finest titles. It’s an offering that is well-worth the investment, and definitely places skeptics at bay. It’s more than a superior Western-based title.

Gamers anticipating the Holiday release of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will have to wait a little longer. The title has been pushed back to a March 2011 release date, as CEO Yves Guillemot cites the move in response to “the competitive environment and provide additional time for developers to realize their ambitions.” The game is still scheduled to be featured at the E3 Expo.

Super Mario Galaxy redeemed Nintendo for the letdown that was Super Mario Sunshine. Miyamoto and crew have seemingly accomplished the impossible – surpassing the original. The incorporation of new suits that give Mario incredible abilities is an enjoyable feature, as is the ability to ride Yoshi during your latest interstellar adventure. It’s a gorgeous title to behold and focuses on the aspect most developers have seem to forgotten – replay value.

Even with all the various incarnations of the Metal Gear franchise that have pushed the boundaries in terms of visual storytelling, none have quite played as well as Metal Gear Solid. The origin of how Outer Heaven came to be at the hands of Big Boss is a compelling story that rivals the original. Plus, you’d be hard pressed to find such a polished title on the PSP. Memorable boss battles and nail-biting scenarios add to the package, as it’s a welcome change that lends itself to an unforgettable experience.

The idea is to stuff a princess’ face ‘till she turns into a blimp. This way the opposing team can’t carry her back to her base. All in all it’s a way to remind us how fat people are around the world are through the means of “Capture the Flag”, but neither entertaining. Wish the fat part wasn’t true. Maybe then the game might be slightly amusing.

The rumor mill is always fileld to the brim with lots of rumors – 99.9% which turn out to be lame. Yet the most intriguing of those happens to deal with the debut of PSP 2 – Sony’s successor to the PSP. It is rumored to have a fourcore processor, which is half of the power used for the PS3’s eight-core processor. Obviously the tech talk tends to be boring, but in terms of what it could produce does raise eyebrows. People anticipate an E3 unveiling, but because of the current stage of development many insist it won’t happen, as well as competition from the Nintendo 3DS.

Smoke and Mirrors Rescue Me’s Denis Leary, Never Shys Away From The Truth words by: Patrick Douglas photos courtesy of: FX Network

SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

Thanks to the magic of Twitter, even guys like Denis Leary can turn to instant messaging and make it a stand-up routine. “Bret Michaels walking and talking. No singing so far. Maybe it really is a miracle.” About 5 hours ago. “This just in: Lawrence Taylor makes Ben Roethlisberger look like a Jonas Brother.” About 8 hours ago. “United and Continental merge to create largest airline ever. Does this mean the male flight attendants will be twice as bitchy?” about 13 hours ago. Welcome to the world of stand-up comedy in 2010. Hey, it sure beats the hell out of having to write down random thoughts and save them for the next show. Chances are, if you thought up a good joke based on current events, Leary has already beat you to the punch. He’s is a busy man these days wrapping up his successful firefighterthemed television series “Rescue Me,” and traveling the country doing the “Rescue Me 2 Comedy Tour.” As the Twitter bug spread and infected millions around the nation, it was only a matter of time before Leary caught the fever and began sharing spontaneous observations. “Doing the Twittering is because, I should be honest, it’s more competitive,” he said. “I started to see comedians that I know, my wife as well, doing it. I thought, ‘I think of funny stuff every day.’ Steven Colbert’s not the only guy. I really started to get pissed off when I saw Colbert and a couple other funny guys doing it. Then I saw Conan go on and I have to admit when I see Conan doing stuff, I’m always like ‘You know, I can do that.’ I find myself very competitive with Conan. I don’t know why. I really like him and I think he’s funny. I’m such a moron when it comes to this stuff. Then I saw Conan was doing it and I was just like, ‘Well, if Conan can do it, I mean, I can figure out how to do it.’ Twitter, I think, is probably a glimpse into what’s on my mind.” Twitter is a two-way street for Leary. If someone has shit to say about his show, he’s going to find out.

“You bet your ass. I’m not going to Twitter and not pay attention to what (fans) say,” he said. “Hopefully they’ll like it. If they don’t, I’m going to turn Courtney Love and start attacking them personally on my Twitter page. How’s that for interactive?” If you’ve watched any NFL or NBA games in the past year, you’ve no doubt heard Leary’s voice dozens of times in the many Ford commercials he’s voiced over. He’s the voice of Diego in the “Ice Age” franchise, does numerous characters in “Crank Yankers,” had some cool roles in movies like “Suicide Kings,” “The Sandlot,” “The Ref,” “Judgment Night,” and “Demolition Man.” If you’re over 30, you might remember him as the crazy chain-smoking rantaholic from the MTV promos of the early ‘90s who really had an issue with Cindy Crawford. With all that, he’s best known for “Rescue Me,” currently airing its sixth season. One of the main writers on the show and a co-creator, Leary plays Tommy, the cantankerous veteran firefighter who deals with tragedies on the job and a destructive family in his spare time. While many TV shows get hammered before they even get a whiff at a second season, “Rescue Me” has enjoyed a great run on FX. It’s scheduled to end after the seventh season in 2011, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of 9/11. “We turned in the final two scripts, the finale of ‘Rescue Me’ (and FX executive) John Langraf was remarking to us about how much fun it was to work with us, and blowing smoke up our very skinny Irish asses,” said Leary. “I think it’s so much easier for cable to (stick with a show) and for executives to do that in cable because they can buy what they really, truly like themselves and then put it on the air and stick with it. Whereas, at network, I think it’s still the same game. They throw a lot of things against the wall. If somebody says they like it, then they have to go with it, even if they don’t think it’s what they really want to do. It’s always amazing when a show like ’30 Rock,’ squeaks by with critical acclaim and small numbers because they don’t generally stick with stuff like that. I couldn’t be more thankful that we have worked at FX and even if I was going to do a sitcom in the future, I think it would be the first place I would go to just because I really love working there.”

Premiering in 2004, Leary has spent the better part of the past seven years filming in heavy gear, something that makes the job one of the most physical he’s ever endured, but nothing like being a real firefighter. “It’s way tougher than hockey. When we shoot the fire scenes, it’s a combination of our stunt team and our real actors and our real firefighters,” Leary explained. “A real fire where we would be supposedly, not us because we’re chickens, but real firefighters would be running in to do the job and getting it done in a couple of hours, at most. For us, we’ve gotta keep doing the same thing over and over again, so it takes sometimes between twelve hours, sometimes 24 hours in two-day shifts to shoot one fire scene.” “We’re always surrounded by real firefighters when we’re doing our fire scenes,” he continued. “So, those guys obviously make us pale in comparison. We have one of our real guys who’s a big bear of a man. He’s a lieutenant in the FDNY. He came to work one morning (and) he had a bandage on his neck and a bandage on his hand. I go ‘What’s going on with your hand and your neck?’ He goes, ‘Ah, I got burnt last night. It’s nothing.’ We hear from one of the other guys (that) they were on their way into a job and a pile of debris that was on fire fell on top of him, hit him on the neck, went down his sleeve, got stuck inside the sleeve of his bunker coat. He refused to go to the hospital. Him and his crew put it out, then they went back to the firehouse, changed up, and came to the set of ‘Rescue Me.’ Here we are, these baby-assed actors, about to act like fireman. I tell you, it really puts you in your place.” The reason behind the authenticity of “Rescue Me,” is simple – Leary has had a personal connection with firefighters all his life. “My cousin Jerry, who died in the line of duty ten years ago … he was hell-bent on being a firefighter,” said Leary, whose character in ‘Rescue Me’ also had a cousin die in the line of duty. “Anybody who knows firefighters knows that when a person in your family gets involved with the fire department, the crew that they get assigned to, they become part of your family. Those guys from the crew were always fixing my mother’s porch or

Nitty gritty doing her kitchen over or whatever it might be. I was exposed pretty early on to what those guys do and how they do it.” Leary’s a philanthropist too. To date, his Leary Firefighters Foundation has raised more than $2.5 million for firefighters in the New England and New York areas. “Rescue Me,” will air two more seasons and then wrap up. Seven seasons is a major accomplishment in television standards and Leary had a good time coming up with a great way to fade to black on the final episode. “I think it satisfies people,” said Leary of the ending. “Not that we were out to please the audience, but we wanted to do something that was organic.” He then went on to jokingly talk about endings that didn’t make the cut. “One was a diner with all the firefighters sitting around listening to a Journey song and then just cut to black,” he said. “But, apparently, they did that at the end of ‘The Sopranos,’ so we can’t do that. Then it was going to be a group hug ala Mary Tyler Moore, which was going to be kind of an homage, but some of the guys didn’t want to be involved in a group hug. So, both of those ideas went out the window.” The traveling show this year again features Lenny Clarke and Adam Ferrera (both from “Rescue Me”) and promises to be just as offensive and hilarious as Leary and company are famous for with no topics off limits. “The Vatican, Ben Rapelessberger as I’m calling him, you know those things are probably things that are going to show up in the show when we get started,” he said. “Just the idea of talking about Ben Rapelessberger, athletes who are criminally involved in illegal pursuits, that alone could probably give me ten minutes of material. I think we can safely say whatever night you come, you’re going to be entertained. I don’t think we include or exclude anybody. We just go for the funny. We’re equal opportunity offenders. The bulk of our approach is always kind of whatever the hell’s on your mind, especially with myself and Lenny (Clarke), who tend to be sort of rude. Both of us do a lot of very topical political stuff. I speak for myself, and probably the other comics, there’s no subject that’s verboten on this tour. I think everybody will find something that will either upset them a little bit or make them laugh at something they didn’t expect they were going to laugh at.” “To get paid for doing it and to make money for my foundation at the same time, it’s just kind of ridiculous. None of us are complaining about it right now.” Looking at some of the shit Leary is coming up with on Twitter, it’s a safe bet that people who show up expecting to laugh won’t be complaining much either.

Happy Endings words by Eleni Vazquez

GEMINI (May 22-Jun. 21) It is great to have a conversation about the love of popping blackheads with a co-worker and want to send them a blackhead remover tool gift, as well. Just be careful when you send it, because the numb nuts in the mailroom will inadvertently give it to your boss. CANCER (Jun. 22-Jul. 22) What starts off as a great week by getting a free couch, will result in a tragedy when your partner leaves you because they hate that piece of crap you dragged into the living room. LEO (Jul. 23-Aug.23) You could die this month. Well, you might not, but you could. I’m just saying... VIRGO (Aug. 24-Sept. 23) Nothing works better as a face lift than taking up fire breathing; botox will have nothing on the ending, permanent results.

LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23) A relaxing evening sitting on the patio will result in a spider crawling up your pants and biting your crotch. Nevertheless, the itching sensation might prove to be a sexual enhancement. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 24) Uh-uh. Don’t take that extra shot of booze, honey. Before you know it, you’ll be begging for rides outside a 7-11 convenient store wearing nothing but a towel and jacket and completely confused as to how you go there like that.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19) Yep! That’s them! After being picked up on by a total nightmare at a club and reluctantly adding them to your Facebook, you will see them in the casting on “The Millionaire Matchmaker.” All the more reason to either take advantage of their sorry ass or delete them from your account! PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Just say no to anyone you might try and bang this month with a “rock ‘n roll outlaw” tattoo on their crotch. It’s like a neon sign of how un-cool they really are.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) Finally agreeing to have sex with that long term friend who is back in town for a quick weekend visit isn’t a good idea. Their mom will walk in, just as you are about to get it on, instantly putting an end to that hot and heavy passion.

ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 20) Attending a funeral of an half aunt you didn’t know too well in life will be quite an insightful event, as you realize that your new found halfcousin was actually someone you hooked up with years before.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) That fresh flavored fizzy soda your friend offers you is really a shitting elixir. Unless you want to wake up to poppy pants and explosive, firework runs, just say no thanks to their mean joke.

TAURUS (Apr. 21-May 21) Unless you are a teenager, it isn’t cool to hook up with opponents from OMGPOP, the multiplayer gaming site. This little chap will prove to be a stalker.Yikes!
