The toby jug has been a novelty in English pottery for over 250 years. The first of these taverners were produced in the 1760s and include potters such as Ralph Wood I of Burslem, Thomas Whieldon of Fenton and John Astbury of Shelton. There were several theories as to the name “toby.” One of which refers to a song written in 1761 by the Reverend Francis Faulks, titled “The Brown Jug.” The song refers to “Toby Fillpot, a thirsty old soul.” Although many early tobies were produced by a variety of manufacturers throughout England, the seated figure wearing a tricornered hat and holding a jug of ale was a most popular theme and is referred to by collectors as an “ordinary” toby whereas other early and more unusual subjects include Martha Gunn, the Thin Man, the Thin Boy, the Sailor and Sharp Face. Varying use of underglaze enamels also adds to the rarity of many examples.

Chatelaines are waist-hung adornments popular among women in the 18th century. The term derives from the French medieval use, describing the mistress of a castle whose symbol of office was the keys jangling at her waist. A hooked or clasped waist plaque may have several chains suspended from it, terminating in rings to attach a wide variety of small, useful objects like watches, keys, perfumes, small purses, or even needlework tools. Many of the chatelaines featured in this sale are specifically for needlework, and include thimble buckets, scissors scabbards, pincushions, needlecases, and notebooks.
