Russian Icons

Acting as a “window” into the heavenly realm, Russian icons are meant to focus and amplify prayers. Beyond their practical use as sacred objects, several factors determine an icon’s significance. Icons depicting holy persons or events that have universal appeal are typically more desirable, such as variations of the Mother of God or St. George and the Dragon (both featured in this sale). Furthermore, although icons depict the same figures and scenes, each is unique in its details, indicating the quality of its craftsmanship. In addition to the subject and craftsmanship of icons, age and size determine their value. Since most Russian icons date to the 17th and 19th centuries, original icons dating to the 15th century or earlier are significant simply for their age. Finally, while smaller icons were intended for personal or family use, larger icons were commissioned for cathedrals, and thus painted by trained craftsmen expected to produce a high-quality painting.

Wedgwood’s Carrara Ware Around 1849, Wedgwood introduced their version of Parian ware, inspired by early bisque wares from France and later England. These unglazed porcelain wares resemble marble sculpture, so it is no coincidence Wedgwood named their wares after the white statuary marble from the quarries at Carrara in Northern Italy. Many of the models were made from existing molds used for black basalt and some, as in this group, were made in both a carrara and a majolica glaze, capturing Victorian tastes. Production of carrara continued until the early 1900s.
