Safe Passages: Why We Should Support Them THE

AES NEWSKIES

Ruby Casper, Staff

Crash! You see an animal dead on the road from a car collision and the driver’s hurt too. How can we stop this from happening?

Safe Passages is an organization in the Roaring Fork Valley that is trying to stop the problem of animals and humans getting hurt ( or in the animals case killed) by creating underpasses or overpasses for wildlife. They need all the help they can get to put some in the Roaring Fork Valley, mainly on Highway 82, in the Catherine store area, at Crystal River, Emma, Snowmass Canyon and between the airport and Woody Creek because there are more Deer and Elk in these places as they tend to get hit more .The Aspen Times states “in 2023, The Colorado Department Of Transportation ( CDOT) collected 7,163 carcasses ( dead body of an animal ) off the side of the road” Now that’s just another point of why we need wildlife crossings in the Valley, I mean that’s a lot of dead animals that we could save! If we could

put an under or overcrossing in these areas we could lower the result of animals dying from car collisions by 90%! Safe Passages needs support and that’s why I want you to learn more about this organization.

“If we got a wildlife crossing I would see it as a signal that we are helping our wildlife as a community and to me that’s really important” says Cecily DeAngelo director of Roaring Fork Safe Passages, and Julia Kintsch adds “Yet wildlife crossings cost a lot! It would probably

cost about 10 to 20 million dollars but it’s rough because we don’t have a listed price for them yet! The overcrossing or the under crossing is just part of the project like large fences to lead them to the crossings and keep them out of the road also cost a lot of money, not just the actual structure” stated Kinstch. This is the reason Safe Passages needs all the help they can get, if more and more people help support them they might be able to put some in Aspen/ the Roaring Fork valley!”

These collisions don’t only result in serious injuries, they also cost money for the person who hits the animal. Annual costs of these collisions cost 80 million dollars! In property damages, emergency response costs, medical treatments and other costs. This 80 million dollars doesn’t include the loss of wildlife around 24 million dollars! That’s 104 million dollars in all, and that’s way to much

You might be wondering how you can help Roaring fork safe passages, well it’s not like you have to do something like sell your car and give the money to Safe Passages ( although it would be a great donation) just little donations can help! You can have a bake sale or a garage sale and Donate the money. Just little things can help so no, you do not need to donate a ridiculous amount of money. ( unless you want to!) Another thing you can do is keep learning about Safe Passages and talk to adults or kids so there is even more support in our community! In conclusion, please help support Roaring Fork Safe Passages by doing the little things I just stated, it will save our animals in the roaring fork valley from becoming extinct, it will also keep drivers safe because they can also get hurt in a wildlife collision, these are the reasons you should help our animals and Roaring Fork Safe Passages .

Freeze Days Are They Good or Bad?

In January ASD had a Freeze Day. Me and others have opinions and information on Freeze Days. You are probably asking “What are Freeze Days?” ASD students got the day off due to it being too cold (at least -15°F with wind chills).

Here is some information that our transportation director Reghan Mahaffey said: “Freeze Days are for safety because people can develop frostbite in under 10

minutes! This is not a typical call. Also, Diesel buses have a freeze point (below -24°F for regular diesel and -10°F for Cloud Point. Altitude plays a part.) for their fuel.” Safety is really important to the school so they try to be as safe as they can.

Mahaffey says that “they are just a tool for the school, for safety.” After all I learned about Freeze Days I agree with Mahaffey and I am glad to know the school keeps kids safe on cold days.

ASD Summer Shrinks AES Should Have a Student Council

Kieran Keleher, Staff Writer

We need a student council!

A student council makes it so kids can run for positions like President and secretary to make some changes in the school, like new equipment. Counsel is different from a counselor, Shea is a counselor. He helps kids be calm and controlled. A council is a group of people who give advice and make decisions. At our high school there is a student council. In our elementary school we don't have a student council. If you want to learn more about a student council, I'd recommend reading my article to inform yourself about a possible student council.

After an interview with AES principal Ashley Bodkins she concluded that “having a student council would give the school a way for kids to make more decisions and it's a good idea.” Since only the high school has a council the middle school and elementary

but I'm in fourth grade so it's up to you if you want one. Maybe you want to run for president or vice president or any other position you'd want to be, and if not maybe you just want to vote, that's okay too. These are some of the positions you could run for if there is a council. A president and vice president are the top of the food chain which means they make the most changes. The secretary is a note taker which is someone who keeps everything organized and talks to the president about requests. The treasurer is someone who keeps track of money and how it's spent so we can save money. If there’s people running each position then we have our very own student government.

The benefits of a student council would be the kids making decisions too instead of just the adults, then if kids want something they could talk to the coun-

The Summer of 2025 will be the shortest summer Aspen School District should ever have.

The summer will last from June 4 to August 13. Causing only ten weeks of summer while Last year it lasted from June 6 to August 21 which is 11 weeks. One of The reasons this summer will only be 10 weeks is because the school year is moving one week earlier. Another reason the summer was moved one week earlier is because currently, the high school is not on the same calendar as the CHSAA, Which is the Colorado High School Activities Association. Moving school one week earlier will allow high school students to start school the same day they start sports. This matters because the students have more time to get ready for their sports

Before the change was made official the process had to be approved by the superintendent and then by the board of education.

Ashley Bodkins, the Principal of Aspen elementary school has mixed feelings about the decision.

and Kalli

it will also help the Aspen Elementary third and fourth graders get more days of school in before they have to take CMASS tests,” Bodkins stated.

I don’t know if this will benefit from more Practice, or not.

Making schedule changes is very very difficult as ashley bodkins explains,

“One of the biggest challenges with creating the schedule is that creating the calendar is that people always have differing opinions of what they think is best. We try to balance those differing opinions such as Colin Jordan’s opinion but also make decisions based on student learning.”

Because some kids like Colin Jordan have limited time to see their friends, because they are only available at the end of the summer which is now part of school, they won’t get to hang out with their friends that much.

Next year the calendar committee might change the summer to only 7 weeks! The reason is so we can have more breaks throughout the school year. Having only

School Start Times

Max Leslie,

Have you ever felt like you didn’t get enough sleep in the morning? Or like there’s too much traffic on your way to school? Or maybe you’ve felt cramped or uncomfortable on the bus? Well it might be because of the morning school starting times. This is a problem for many reasons, like traffic, full buses and sleep.

I have interviewed the people involved in this like the ASD transportation director (Reghan Mahaffey) students and residents who live near the problems. They seemed to agree with the problems I listed, like traffic. They also brought new problems to my attention, most having to do with the bus, like age differences causing inappropriate interactions and crowding on the buses. This crowding has made many younger students uncomfortable, and as a result we have seen a decrease in bus ridership. Yes, the earlier starting times can affect your sleep and while it doesn’t seem to be affecting elementary students it certainly affects older students. The older you get the longer you stay up, many AMS students have been staying up later. Usually they could fix this by sleeping in in the mornings, but the new schedule makes that difficult. This could be concerning for fourth graders who will be in middle school next year. This is cool and all but what about a solution to the problems? Well here are some possibilities. For the traffic it needs to be a community wide effort so let’s talk about the other problems. An obvious solution to sleep is just changing the start times or sending notes to parents telling them to make their kids go to bed early. The buses could be fixed by changing back the start times. It could also be fixed by increasing our bus fleet but with a shortage of drivers it may be hard. Overall I think that the change wasn’t the best and the best decision moving on may be to change back the start times. But in conclusion the morning start times are very influential to our lives and may need to be changed.

All school ski days should be earlier in the school year.

This year’s ski day for the fourth grade was on March 20th. The 20th of March was the first day of spring this year. There’s lots of reasons why ski day should be earlier.

There are many reasons why ski day should happen earlier, like in January or February. In March, ski day is not as good. The snow is way better in January. There is more powder and better skiing and snowboarding. When whole classes of students go skiing, there are many kids who are beginners. If you’re a beginner and you fall you are more likely to fall into powder in January. The snow in March is slushy and wet while in January, the snow is fluffy and

soft because it is colder and January is closer to the winter solstice.

More people are here because of spring break in March. I interviewed one of the supervisors at Aspen Skiing Company, Kevin Jordan. I interviewed Jordan because I wanted to know how much the population goes up in March. Jordan said “The population in Aspen and Snowmass increases by 500 or more people during a busy week.” It’s harder to ski if there are more people on the mountain, especially with tourists skiing sooo slow!

Last year, some people in third grade got hurt on ski day and more people got hurt this year. Talk to your teachers and Ashley to ask for an earlier ski day but do it peacefully. Let’s try to change the school and make ski day earlier.

How to Improve our Test Scores

Mason Fortier, Staff writer

We take tests in school and it’s important to do well so let’s see how we can.

We’ve all not done well on tests and it’s a bummer! But have you ever thought of how you can improve? Let’s see how we can start to improve our test scores in AES. Here are some ways.

Well, the first important thing that we can do to improve our test scores is to come to school on a daily basis. This would mean not to miss a bunch of days of school and possibly miss the days that you need to prepare for the test. We have a lot of students in our school that miss a lot of days either because their family is traveling or there are sicknesses and things like that.

Another important way to improve our

test scores is to think about our learner profile traits. Make sure that every day when we come to school we are being principled, communicators and so many other learner profiles. Ashley Bodkins, our AES principal said “If we had less behaviors that interrupted learning in the classroom, that’s another way that we can improve our test scores.”

Another thing is that it’s always really important to read every night because the more you read the more you know. Ashley Bodkins says that “The more you learn the more you grow.” Reading is about being a risk taker and asking questions when you don’t know or understand something you are reading.

The last thing we have to think about is who we are, and that we can always im-

prove. Here are Ada Friedman’s favorite test taking strategies:

#1 get 10-12 hours of sleep each night.

#2 eat a healthy breakfast before your test.

During the test some other ways to do well are…

#1 read each question carefully.

#2 read it again if it doesn’t make sense. #3 read all the answer choices and eliminate answers that definitely don’t make sense.

#4 double check your work.

#5 don’t take up all your time on one question.

And that’s all Mrs. Ada said! So let’s start to show that we’ve thought about how to improve our test scores here in AES.

5 Awesome Things to do After School

Have you ever been bored after school? Many families are struggling to find affordable fun activities for their children after school in the Aspen Snowmass area. I’m here to solve that, I have a line up of the top five things to do after school.

Number one: Aspen valley ski and snowboard club. It is aspens ski and snowboard school for kids otherwise known as AVSC. The programs are: Alpine, Pre-devo, Freestyle/Freeride, Nordic and SkiMo. The program goes to mid or late april. Fourth grader Hazel Daniels Says she enjoys pre Devo.

Number two: Aspen Junior Golf. It is a great golf program for the youth. Programs: Golf week long camp, Summer 9 week program: 7-18, Development team, 4-6 year old summer program, Birds and eagles all day golf camp, Ranch at Roaring Fork par 3 tournaments, Fall after school program 8-26.

Number three:Aspen Music Festival and School. Send your child here if they have any musical interest. Programs:

Orchestra/Instrumental, Solo piano, Collaborative piano, Aspen Opera Theaters and vocal arts, Aspen Conducting Academy, Susan and Ford Schumann Center Composition Studies, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, American Brass Quintet Seminar @ Aspen, Classical guitar.

Number four: Aspen science center. Paul Gonzales, ASC educator, says “We provide supplemental education in STEM outside of school.” Programs: After school robotics at AES, library programs (STEM exploration hour) once a month, early childhood learning, Snowmass Ice Age tours. “They’re so much fun!” says 4th grader Colin Jordan.

Number five: Aspen Junior Hockey. This is an after school program starting in Kindergarten. Ruby Casper, hockey player, says “it’s great for kids because it teaches kids how to play hockey and teaches kids sportsmanship and teamwork.” You practice 2 or 3 times a week. It goes from October to February each year.

AES’s Favorite Stops and Shops

Giada DelGrasso, Staff Writer Ever wonder where to go in Aspen on the weekend? Or what to do in town in your free time? There are many different places in Aspen to go to, but how do you choose? There are so many places, but which ones are good for elementary school kids? I’m here to answer all those questions. Keep reading to find out!

I’ve interviewed 4 people to see what their favorite place in Aspen is. The first person I interviewed is Scarlett Matthews, a 4th grader in Mark Wise’s class. Her favorite place in Aspen is Paradise Bakery. Paradise bakery has been making treats since 1976. The founder of Paradise Bakery is Daniel Patterson. “There are many varieties of muffins, cookies, ice cream and more to choose from.” Matthews said. She would recommend Paradise Bakery because it is a sweet treat to get. Scarlett goes to Paradise Bakery often, and likes to go a lot! You should visit Paradise Bakery if you like bakery foods. I also interviewed 3rd grader Peyton Bennett in Nikki Dorr’s class. Her favorite place in Aspen is Aviator Nation. Aviator Nation was founded in 2006 by a woman named Paige Mycoskie. She likes Aviator Nation because “my brother works there.” Bennett said. She recommends this place to other students and teachers because it has nice clothing, and nice workers. Peyton goes to Aviator Nation frequently, and really likes it, and you might like it if you like fun clothing, fun colors and smiley faces, this just might be the shop for you!

Another person I interviewed was 3rd grade teacher Nikki Dorr, and her favorite store in Aspen is Alice Olivia. Alice Olivia was founded in 2002 by a woman named Stacey Bendet. She likes Alice

Olivia because it has “lots of creative and fun designs and clothing.” Dorr said. She would recommend this place for some teachers but not all, because it is very expensive. Nikki goes a lot, but does not always buy things, since it’s so expensive. So, I4 guess if you like expensive and fun creative clothing, you should shop here.

The last person I interviewed was 4th grader Ellie Miller in Jeff White’s class. She said that her favorite place in Aspen is Red Fox Frozen Yogurt. She likes this place because they “change their flavors every week.” Miller said. She recommends this place especially in the summer as a “sweet treat!” Ellie goes to Red Fox every summer! And if you like creative flavors and good frozen yogurt, maybe you should visit red fox!

Some other places you might want to go are the library to read, or study, or just to hang out! Another place that is liked by many people is the Isis movie theater where you can watch new movies and have popcorn, candy, and drinks. Another cool fact is that my brother Roman works there!

As you can see, you can go to any of these places, or any other ones you may like. So now you might know where you want to go on the weekend or in your free time.

What’s Cooking? Aspen Elementary School’s Cafeteria Food

Eleanor Gorlach, Staff Writer

Imagine this: You go to lunch and get a big ol’ piece of cake. Well, believe it or not, 24 years ago the cafeteria served dessert. Jeff White, a 4th grade AES teacher said, “When I started working at AES, they had desserts every day, which ended up being what the kids mostly ate for the day.” If we introduced dessert again to the cafeteria, it might not be such a good idea knowing what White said about it “being what the kids mostly ate for the day.” But there is a way to make dessert possible. If AES students eat most of their food, maybe they could go back and get dessert. Of course, this won’t happen for sure, but it’s a good idea that we should all consider. This also helps with food waste because kids would be more motivated to eat all of their lunch.

People have other ideas to improve the experience at the AES cafeteria. For example, allergies. Students at AES have all kinds of allergies to all sorts

of food: eggs, sea food, wheat, and more. Students can also be gluten-free, vegetarian, or pescetarian. The cafeteria doesn’t have many options for students who have allergies, as Skye Spears, a 4th grader at AES said, “I think they should have more of a selection of foods for students with allergies or students who just don’t like the current food.” One way to help students is to have more food options. Of course, we do have Meatless Mondays, which are for kids who are vegetarian, but usually they serve banana bread, granola with chocolate chips, and waffles, which are considered a breakfast food. Once in a while we have savory food for Meatless Mondays, which is great. I think that should happen every Meatless Monday. If AES were to add more savory options to Meatless Mondays, we could use the survey I conducted to decide on other vegetarian options and potentially more allergy-friendly options. Based on my survey of 87 AES fourth graders, the

most popular foods are the following, in order of popularity: pasta, pizza, breakfast, and Mexican food. Would students be open to eating vegetarian Mexican food on some Mondays? Vegetarian corn tostadas (gluten-free) topped with frijoles (beans), optional queso (cheese), and guacamole could be a fun option. We could also have fish tacos on Meatless Mondays for the pescetarians.

The AES cafeteria is already doing its part when it comes to being eco-friendly: reusable trays and silverware are good for the planet. But there is room for improvement based on the interviews I conducted. Adding dessert as an option for students who finish their lunch can help reduce food waste. By offering more

options for Meatless Mondays, for example, students with food allergies could have a better lunch. We are lucky to have such a wonderful cafeteria at AES, but there are small improvements that can be made to make our cafeteria even better. And, who wouldn’t want to fight food waste with cake?

Pooping in the Woods

When camping in the woods pooping is essential and if you don’t know how to do it properly it can become a hazard to the environment, and the nature around it.

One reason it can be harmful is that dogs and other animals poop take only a few weeks to decompose-but human poop takes a whole year!. Not only does it take a long time but it is bad for animals too. It can cause diarrhea (dier-ea) which is a type of poop in which you have when you’re sick, helminth (hel-min-th) infection (in- fect-on) which is caused by worms and can affect us immensely, tacoma (tac-oma) which is linked to milkshakes and is deadly if not treated for. There are also other harmful diseases too but for now we’re good.

The first way we can dispose of waste properly is by making a cathole. A cathole is a hole that you dig and is 6-8 inches deep and 4-6 inches wide and is quite effective if there is no other option. Another way you could dispose of poop is a simple bag you set it up and then you poop in it and success! To learn more I interviewed the environmental ed teachers and they gave me some advice.

Chloe Garfield, an ACES teacher, has a large background in this topic. She mentioned the beauty in pooping in the woods.

“It is beautiful to poop with a view, but you should do it properly,”garfield

said.

Anna Bordstien, another teacher here at school, has a strong opinion about it too. She mentions a tip for when you’re pooping in the woods.

“if you’re pooping in the woods, you need to bury and disguise it enough you’d be ok sleeping on that spot .”Bordstein said”.

and then i learned that there is more than 1 thing you have to always do when you go #2 in the woods and can be helpful. Also that there are some different opinions that people think of pooping in the woods, like Chloe who thinks it’s beautiful. Finally I learned that it is important to listen to others to get advice when you have to poop in a different place.

After my interview I learned 2 more vital skills, one from each teacher used for when you poop in the woods. One thing was to bury your poop, because you never know when you might need to sleep there on that exact place. I also learned that not only one person likes pooping with a view, other people can have that same opinion too. just like how we have opinions on food and which animals we like.

One more thing you can do to keep your poop hidden is to bury your poop deep in the woods so that no one can see it. see how if you know how to poop in the woods properly it can turn out better for the environment take care of our environment!!

Greenhouse Gases

Over time, greenhouse gasses will make the earth become too hot for humans to live on and we may become extinct.

Greenhouse gasses cause climate change, but you probably didn’t know that without them we would freeze. So, they’re also very important! Greenhouse Gasses can be good because some of them are made by natural causes like animals and humans breathing out CO2 (carbon dioxide). Some Greenhouse Gasses are bad like methane and nitrous oxide because they are caused by fossil fuels so now there are a lot of greenhouse gasses so more of the heat is trapped and doesn’t leave our atmosphere. Now it is hotter than it should be and as a result there is less snow. This one is a big concern to all winter sports inthusiests, if you like snow not rocks. If you are a skier or snowboarder this heat is going to affect you sooner or later. For example, chief marketing officer at Ski.com Dan Sherman said that he has “noticed that there hasn’t been as much snow coverage as past seasons” and that “the ski season has been getting shorter and shorter.” There have been stats that say we are getting more rain than snow because when it does snow sometimes it turns to water before it hits the ground because it’s too hot outside. There are

stats that show that it has gotten hotter by 1 Degree celsius over the past five years. Think about how much hotter it will get if we don’t take action.

Climate change is created when greenhouse gasses are released into the atmosphere and are trapped and then the sun reflects off of the earth and can’t leave the atmosphere so the earth will just keep warming up until maybe it is too hot for us to live on the planet. The greenhouse gasses are: methane,co2, nitrous oxide, and florinited gasses.

If you thought there was no way to slow down climate change, you were wrong. There are many ways one of the easiest ways to do this is to reduce food waste or using less energy like turning off the lights when you leave the house. Another way is using solar panels. It will help you save money and slow down climate change so it’s a win-win. You could also get an electric car. The electric car one just makes your entrance to anywhere smoother. All of these things that I listed are ways that you can help some easier than others.

In conclusion, greenhouse gasses are definitely having a huge impact on us and it will get worse if we don’t stop them from being created. There are easy ways to stop them but feel free to do bigger things.

Who Does ASD Think Is The Better Athlete?

Kalli Brodsky, Staff Writer

Who do you think is a better winter athlete, Mia Brookes or Alex Ferreira? If you don’t know who Mia Brookes and Alex Ferreira are, let me tell you a little about them. Mia Brookes is the super cool snowboarder who is in the X Games and has won a bunch of medals. Alex Ferreira is a local, he grew up here

in Aspen and he is a great skier. Also Alex Ferriera actually went into Sam Daniels class last year and did a backflip. Which is super cool.

I talked to one Elementary schooler, one Middle schooler and one High schooler to find out who was more popular between these two athletes.

Elementary schooler Maddie Waldron

said she liked Alex Ferreira more, Waldron said that if she had one question to ask him it would be “ How did you get so good at skiing and learn all those tricks? “. What she liked about him was he has won many medals and that is super awesome.

The middle schooler I interviewed was Liam Long and he also said that he

liked Alex Ferreira even though he is a snowboarder. Long said he really likes his style. If there was one question he would ask Ferreira It would be “How did you get to the level that you are at” If he were to convince someone to like him would tell them about their style and all the difficult tricks he can do.

And the high schooler I interviewed was Sara Kershow who said she also liked Alex Ferreira because he is a local and is very inspiring. She said that if she had one question for him it would be “ What is your biggest motivation for skiing “ she also liked being able to ski some of the same runs that he skis.

Well, even though everybody I interviewed said they liked Alex Ferrierra better, Mia Brookes is cool too. Her sponsor is Monster Energy, she started snowboarding when she was only 18 months old,she was trained from 10 years old and up by Great Britain Snowsport Freestyle coaches. And one of her biggest motivations was her parents. But in 2021 she caught her toe edge riding up the take off on the last jump in Corvatsch and got a horrible concussion and had to take a helicopter out.

Alex Ferriera on the other hand is also awesome, which is probably why Waldron, Long, and Kershow chose him. Ferreira is sponsored by Toyota and Topstep, He is known for his double cork 1620 which involves two flips and four and a half rotations. Ferreira is a two time X Games gold medalist in freestyle skiing, he is known for his incredible skills in the halfpipe, his playful personality “Hotdog Hans” and his Argentinian roots, as his father was a professional soccer player and on 4th grade ski day me and a couple other 4th graders got to

Taylor Swift vs Imagine Dragons

Taylor swift and Imagine Dragons are both great and popular musical acts but who is more popular ?

They both sell merchandise and souvenirs and both have popular songs And love to perform and seem to have happy lives.

Taylor swift started as a music maker at age 10. Taylor sang the Star -Spangled Banner at a Philadelphia 76ers basketball game at age 11 and began learning guitar and writing her own songs at 12. My friend Thea said That she liked these Taylor Swift songs the best: “Cruel Summer, Karma, and Miss America and the Heartbreak Prince,” which were

singing with Taylor swift,Jamming out. If you were selected out of a group of people, what would you sing?” My friend said that

She would sing “The Great War and My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys.”

If you like Taylor Swift, my friend Thea said that a popular merchandise item was the Taylor Swift cardigan And said “it is crazy popular.”

Taylor swift has made music history, and she did it with a little help from her instruments.Everthing Taylor does has music, and her most popular instrument ,the guitar. Thea said she owned a gui tar. She is a rock star at guitar but no one is better than Taylor swift!

ACDHOH vs. Sylvan Lake

Why

the Switch Up?

Have you ever heard of Aspen Camp of Deaf and Hard of Hearing? also known as the AES 3rd grade outdoor ed. This year, though, it’s changing to a place called Sylvan lake! well if you didn’t know, then you are reading the right article!

ACDHOH was established in 1967 by Reed Harris, a local resident with a son that is deaf, and Tom Sardy. ACDHOH is about 23 minutes and 13.8 miles away from AES school, however Sylvan lake is about 2 hours and 87.1 miles away from AES school and was established a state park on July 1st, 1987 by the division of wildlife and the division of parks and outdoor recreation who made the wonderful place of sylvan lake a state park of colorado. Sylvan lake was also the 43rd colorado state park. Both destinations are great for 3rd grade outdoor ed because they are both very kid friendly, they are also different, because ACDHOH teaches the kids

to be communicators by teaching them a little bit of sign language and if they enjoy it then they will be inspired to learn more however sylvan lake will teach them the beauty of nature and why they should protect it so they feel inspired to help the many beautiful places on earth. Kathrine gleason is the head of the outdoor education system she says that they changed it because ACDHOH is very close to home for most of the kids and you sleep in a nice cabin but then in 4th grade you go to mesa-verde and sleep in a tent for 4 nights and mesa-verde is more than 6 hours away from aspen so parents cant come and the kids only other outdoor experience was rock bottom ranch in 2nd grade so they tried to make a bit of a better transition for the kids by doing a trip a bit farther from home and sleeping outside instead of in a nice cabin. I think and I hope all of the 3rd graders have so much on their outdoor ed this year!
