IRLAM LIVE 2022 is back for its sixth year. It takes place for four days, over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend. That’s Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June 2022; it’s on at Prince’s Park in Irlam and looks set to be its biggest year yet!

Four great days – one awesome festival. Headliners for this year include Bananarama and The Feeling. Also playing the main stage are Heather Small, Hue & Cry, Nadine Coyle, N-Trance, Abz from 5ive, Ben from Phats and Small and lots, lots more.

It all kicks off on Thursday 2nd June with ‘Cool Britannia’. This is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee day, when we have a full day of fun for the whole family, including a host of the UK’s finest tribute bands. Queen (of course) will headline Thursday’s main stage with lots of flag waving, and we have one of the best with Real Magic Queen. Also playing the main stage are Revival Abba, Aladinsane (Bowie), Take Off That, LMX (Little Mix) and Tony Lewis as Robbie Williams. Lots of things happening off stage too, including a fantastic model making workshop from the Oscar-winning Aardman Animations, the team behind Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Morph and Creature Comforts.

Friday 3rd June is ‘Totally Tributes’. Friday generally has an indie feel. We have the UK’s leading Oasis tribute band NOASIS headlining the main stage for the second time. Also playing is Runaway Killers, Ultimate Stone Roses, Bob Marley Experience, Small Weller and Amy Winehouse Alive. And, once again, lots of fun happening off stage too. The dinosaurs are coming to town with Chomp, the UK’s largest T.Rex, making a terrifying walkabout.

Saturday 4th June sees Bananarama headlining the main stage with a great line-up playing throughout the day. N-Trance, Brutus Gold’s Love Train, Abz Love from 5ive and Ben from Phats & Small will also make a welcomed return. Manchester Ska Foundation and Scratch completes the line-up.

Sunday 5th June – Playing the main stage are The Feeling, Heather Small, Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud, Hue & Cry and Doctor and the Medics, who will play for the first time since 2017.

The Grassroots Stage is back for 2022, with ten hand-picked unsigned local bands and singers. It’s a real thrill for us to give the local bands the opportunity to play the Irlam Live.

As well as everything on the main stage, there is lots going on off-stage too. There is a funfair, Princess and Superhero walkabouts, Bubbleologist, Street Ping-Pong, a fab DJ workshop and James & Dobby are back with their awesome pop-up silent discos.

A spokesperson said, “We’re excited that Irlam Live is returning and attracting big names that bring so much enjoyment to many of us. The response to this year’s event has been positively overwhelming. It just confirms that Irlam Live is now firmly on the Summer festival map for an unmissable weekend of incredible live music and entertainment for all ages”.

ardens usually include a variety of plant types. Trees and shrubs provide structure and permanency. Annuals germinate, grow and flower in just one season, giving a splash of vibrant colour, albeit rather short lived. Biennials take two years to complete their lifecycle; roots, leaves and stems develop throughout the first year, and then the plant enters a dormant state over the winter before producing flowers then dying in the second year.

Perennials, however, are a fabulous set of plants that provide an amazing show year after year. Herbaceous perennials are plants that last for more than two years; die back in the autumn and then shoot again from their own rootstock each year thereafter. Because each individual plant increases in size, over time they provide a stunning and mature display.

It’s worth doing a little research into the ultimate spread, height, flowering months and preferred growing conditions for the many species available, so you can create a balanced and attractive display. Also, perennials are sub-divided into hardy and half-hardy species.

Half-hardy perennials include fuchsias and pelargoniums which need a frost-free place to live in the winter, whereas hardy perennials can be expected to survive most winters.

Most perennials can be planted at any time of the year and are generally available all year round. Plants for sale in the summer months will naturally be larger and often 12

already in flower so you can see what you are buying. These will also provide instant impact and colour to your garden.

When choosing any new plants from the garden centre or nursery, always make sure they are in good condition with healthy green leaves and a solid crown with new shoots.

Maximum impact is created when clusters of the same plants are positioned together to provide swathes of colour. It’s normal to buy in groups of three or five.

As with any new planting, it’s important to prepare the soil first so your new plant gets the best possible start to its new life.

If you have done your research, you will know how large your new plants will eventually grow, so make sure you leave enough space between them to develop, but not so much that you end up with gaps. The ideal placement results in plants that are just touching when they are fully grown.

Perennials need a little maintenance but it’s all easy: keep them well watered during the first year so they develop strong roots.

Taller varieties may need extra support by tying to canes, and all will require regular dead-heading in order to promote new flower growth. In the winter, most perennials die back, although some do retain their leaves.

Remove any dead leaves in the spring before the new growth starts.

Another benefit of perennials is that you can split them when they get too big and replant them somewhere else, so increasing your stock. In early spring, dig up the entire clump, divide it and replant the new plants wherever you like.

These must-have plants add depth, diversity and colour to your garden, quickly, effortlessly and all without breaking the bank.

MAKING YOUR MONEY GO FURTHER These destinations are considered excellent value. They are worth considering if you want to get more with your holiday spends.

CROATIA Croatia receives a tiny proportion of tourists compared to Spain or France. Yet, with hot summers (averages in June & August 25 - 28°C), an abundance of beaches, islands dotted along the coast (more than 1,000), and low in-resort costs, Croatia is an ideal alternative to better-known summer destinations. Consider Pula a small, though wellstoried town on the tip of the Istrian peninsula and its pretty Italianate neighbour, Rovinj. Both have gorgeous harbours with much scope for cycling, walking, and people-watching.

The immediate coastline around Pula has mostly rock and pebble beaches, albeit photogenic ones.

But if you’re looking for a sandy place to stretch out, try Bijeca Beach which is located in Medulin 10km south east of Pula. For culture there’s one of the largest surviving amphitheatres at Arena. Many stones were taken by locals to build their homes but, luckily, enough are still here to allow plenty of wandering and exploring.

SHARM EL SHEIKH, EGYPT Enjoying high temperatures pretty much all year round (staying around 30°C from May to October), the heat means that staying close to water is preferable, from keeping a bottle handy to picking a hotel with a stellar swimming pool. Na’ama Bay draws the largest number of tourists, with its clubs, cafés and shops, and is a popular holiday destination for scuba divers and sun worshippers alike. You can spend Arabian nights out in the desert on guided Bedouin (the local nomadic tribespeople) tours.

Packages include sights like the Ein Hudra Oasis and Al hedouda, Sinai’s largest dune, as well as food, drink and your very own camel.

You can sit on the hotel-owned beaches (though not on the chairs or at the tables) without staying at them. But, if you want a comfortable beach 16

experience, stay at a top beach hotel. Booking a room separately can be affordable enough to rival cheap package holidays, even at swish resorts like Royal Oasis Na’ama Bay. Top attraction? Pick a tour with a stop at St. Catherine’s Monastery on the side of Mount Sinai, for an unforgettable climb (preferably as the sun rises) up to this ancient holy site, where Moses was said to have received the Ten Commandments.

BALI, INDONESIA Bali known as Island of the Gods, Bali is heavenly.

Think lush green rice terraces, clifftop temples, volcanic peaks and swathes of golden sands. Most of the resorts are in the south, particularly Kuta, Denpasar (near Bali Airport) and Seminyak. Kuta is crowded with Aussie tourists and surfers hoping to catch some waves along the beach. For more highend hangouts, head to Nusa Dua, a 20-30 minute drive from Kuta and spend the day in a five-star hotel spa at the St. Regis Bali Resort, or dine in one of the many Michelin star-quality restaurants in this exclusive bay. And that’s just the coast. Ubud (central Bali) is considered the cultural hub of the island, home to some of the finest examples of Indonesian arts and dance.

Best beach? It’s hard to know where to start, since Bali seems encircled by near-perfect beaches.

But to really escape the crowds, head to one of the smaller islands offshore. Nusa Penida is known for its colourful snorkelling and diving opportunities, while Nusa Lembongan is a good place to chill in front of spectacular mountain views back across the water.

Top attraction? There are plenty of temples and palaces to check out in Bali, but if you’ve only got time for one, make it Puri Saren Agung, the Royal Water Palace in Ubud, the perfect setting for a traditional dance performance on an open-air stage surrounded by lily pad filled ponds.

• 350g Unsalted butter, at room temperature • 150g Granulated sugar • 2 tbsp Fresh rosemary, or 2 tsp dried 4.

• 340g Plain flour • 75g Semolina • ¼ tsp Salt • 2 tsp Demerara sugar for topping 1. Preheat the oven to 190°C and grease two baking sheets.

Roll the dough out to about a centimetre thickness. Cut shapes as required, or fingers and place them on the greased baking sheets. Sprinkle with sugar and bake in the centre of the oven until they are gold at the edges, between 12 and 15 minutes.

Remove from the oven and place them on wire racks to cool.

Pack in an airtight container where they will keep, their flavour improving, for at least a week.

How Cara makes the most of her ‘me-time’ There is a stark difference between being lonely and being alone. As an only child, time spent alone has always been something that I hugely treasure. I tend to be struck with writing inspiration when I am alone with my thoughts, and I really mentally recharge when it’s just me, myself and I. Sometimes we spend so long in the company of others that we inadvertently start to lose parts of ourselves.

To those around us, we each have many labels and identities. We’re someone’s ‘other half,’ someone’s mother, father, daughter, carer, boss, teacher, friend. But underneath all of this, we are also our own identity. We’re runners, writers, bakers, footballers, comedians... Our personalities are so beautifully diverse, and our minds are made up of millions of little unique quirks that make us exactly who we are.

The demands of work, house repairs, family dramas and everything else that goes hand in hand with life’s ups and downs can leave us feeling stressed and frazzled. This is the danger zone when it comes to forgetting large chunks of who we really are, what makes us truly happy, and the ambitions we have. These things often get chucked on the backburner in favour of more mundane and pressing matters.

It’s so important to take time out to simply be with ourselves. Going for a run, having a bath, reading a few chapters of a book – these are all simple ways that can we implement this imperative ‘me time’ into our everyday lives. Even just a few minutes of head space after a hectic day can perform miracles on our wellbeing.

I realised that I had been existing, but not really living. Before Covid, travel was such a huge part of my life. It was utterly exhilarating to be reunited with this forgotten passion and once again stride through departures, passport in hand.

On my first night in Malta, I took myself out for a date. I got all dressed up in a new outfit that I had been saving especially, and I booked myself a table for one at a fancy restaurant.

I didn’t feel self-conscious, and nobody batted an eyelid at the sight of someone sat alone in the centre of the restaurant scoffing down the complimentary breadsticks at a rapid rate!

I sat and soaked up the atmosphere, writing and enjoying the simplicity of good food. I don’t recall the last time I felt so content.

Through spending time alone, I learned more about myself during those five days in Malta than I have done over the past two years.

Sometimes, silencing the outside world and tuning into ourselves can bring us a clarity that we hadn’t even realised we were seeking.
