BORSCHT (Beetroot Soup) INGREDIENTS

900g Beetroot 1.1 litres Beef Stock 450g Onion, grated 225g Carrots, peeled & grated 2 large sticks of Celery, chopped 1 Bouquet Garni Salt and Pepper 1 tsp Lemon Zest 4 - 6 Black Peppercorns 1 tbsp Lemon Juice GARNISH Soured cream, yogurt or crème fraîche, about 1tbsp per person. Finely chopped parsley

Clean the beetroot, top and tail, being careful not to cut too far into the flesh.

Do not peel. Simmer whole in unsalted water until tender (from 30 - 50 mins, depending on size). Drain, cool and remove the skin by rubbing.

Chop or grate the cooked beetroot into a large saucepan. Add the stock, carrots, onions and celery. Bring to the boil and add the peppercorns, lemon zest, salt and bouquet garni. Cover and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, then add salt to taste. YORK

York Minster

ork is a very pleasant destination for a short break and is easy to get to by car or train. Most of its industrial past has moved on and now the main income source is tourism, together with the extensive university. As a result, the city is very much focussed on entertaining visitors.

York has a vast treasure of old buildings, many of which are in daily use as shops, bars, cafes & coffee shops, patisseries and restaurants, in addition to other general commercial purposes. The sheer number of such buildings is reminiscent of Rome and, perhaps, this is no coincidence given that York was created as an outpost of the Roman Empire in AD71. Among the visitor attractions are: York Minster

Dating from the 7th century, there are many reasons to visit this outstanding icon of York. There are the external structures, including an open-air working masonry yard, where one can see masons working on stone blocks to be incorporated into the Minster. As one can imagine, with a fully active Catholic church, the internal spaces are peaceful, with much of historical and artistic interest. For the reasonably physically fit, there is the climb up (and, descent of) 273 steep and winding steps to the open air top of the central tower, for far reaching views over York and many miles beyond.

City Walls

There are 2 miles of walls in excellent condition and walking on them is a free activity (unless you count the cost of the obligatory tea/coffee and pastry from one of the cafes hidden in the wall’s structures).

There are rewarding views of many parts of York, including probably the best views of the Minster itself. The walls nicely show how well the old structures mingle with modern, everyday life as, in places, the walls have supermarkets and council housing as neighbours.

York Castle Museum This museum is in the grounds of a former prison and contains several floors, with displays covering several unconnected subjects. The first section displays objects collected by a local 19th century doctor, who would seek out objects of curiosity belonging to patrons that couldn’t pay for his services with money. It was his donation that started this museum, with his condition of gift being that all objects are displayed as he found them. This museum also has sections covering toys, clothing fashions, York’s association with the armed forces and World War one, a recreated Victorian shopping street and another section about the prison that existed here.

There are more attractions such as the well-regarded York Railway Museum, the Chocolate Story and the Yorvik Viking Centre. There’s also plenty of pretty walking opportunities along the River Ouse and several attractive city parks and gardens.

The old town streets are very atmospheric, with narrow alleys of shops that seem to lean in over the pavements, most busy with visitors. Here you are sure to find appealing souvenirs to remind you of your time spent in York.

We are a very friendly club, where older residents of the local area can meet, enjoy various activities and make new friends. Our meeting place is located next to Marple Memorial Park, close to the library and the Asda supermarket.

As with all social activities, we had to close due to Covid. We have now been able to get going again and have restarted our regular activities, and 2022 sees the return of annual events such as the Cheese and Wine Party, Afternoon Teas, Hot Pot Lunches and the Christmas Party. There will also be some coach trips during the summer months. Our monthly Table-Top sales are also happening again. on the first Saturday of each month.
