PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

"We have an amazing group of educators at SJND... They are humble and proud, caring and accountable, and dedicated and spirited. They are empathetic, while challenging students to learn and grow."

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of SJND, It is an honor and privilege to serve as the Interim Principal at Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School for the 2019-2020 school year. We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year! Earlier this fall, we were recognized as the #1 Most Diverse Private High School in the San Francisco Bay Area, #2 in California and #3 in the nation by Niche.com. We are very proud of this distinction! We’ve also added our new Engineering Pathway to compliment our amazing STEM program, and watched our new, state-of-the-art IDEA Lab and One Button Studio come to life. I have been part of Catholic school education for nearly 40 years - as both a student and educator - and was blessed to join the SJND community 13 years ago. When I visited the SJND campus for the first time in 2006, I experienced a warm, diverse and inclusive community where the students knew the adults on campus cared for them and where they would receive a fantastic college preparatory education. I realized very quickly that I wanted to be part of this very special place and I’ve been here ever since. We have an amazing group of educators at SJND with an immense amount of expertise, passion and love. They are humble and proud, caring and accountable, and dedicated and spirited. They are empathetic, while challenging students to learn and grow. This year, we were blessed to welcome a new set of teachers to the community, who bring unique skills and experiences, and are enthusiastic about living out the SJND mission. They join a fantastic group of faculty and staff, many of whom have been a part of this community for 10, 20, 30+ years. I hope you will honor those SJND faculty

4 Saint Joseph Notre Dame

and staff members who have made an impact in your life by making a gift in their name during the Second Annual SJND Day of Giving on March 13. In September, our community suffered a great loss with the passing of former Athletic Director, Dan Curry. Through his ministry to SJND - particularly his leadership and service to student athletes and coaches - his humility, kindness, and grace, Dan left a mark on the campus that will never be forgotten. Dan was an excellent observer and when he spoke, his words either touched our hearts or minds, and sometimes both, so profoundly. Serving the SJND community has strengthened my own faith while providing me an opportunity to impact young people and advance our mission of “developing confident, open-minded and effective leaders who are ready to live joyful lives of faith, scholarship and service.” Coming to SJND and being a part of this community of hundreds of students, parents, educators, alumni, donors and friends, I have received more than I have given. For this, I will always be grateful. On behalf of the SJND faculty and staff, I thank you for your generosity and continued support of our mission as we prepare the next generation of Pilots to serve and thrive in this ever-changing world. Sincerely,

Julianne Guevara Interim Principal

SJND Faculty and Staff:

UPDATE FEATURE

Where Are They Now? Here at SJND, we are incredibly fortunate to have been blessed with decades of exceptional faculty and staff. Many alumni and current students speak of the unique sense of warmth and care felt around the campus, largely due to the dedicated teachers, counselors and administrators who welcome students into their classrooms, connect with them on a personal level and help shape them into confident, joyful leaders. With the help of Mr. Tony Aiello, we caught up with a few of our beloved former faculty and staff members to find out what they have been up to since moving on from SJND, and to reflect on their favorite memories.

Phil Gravem

Former Administrator and Teacher, 1964-2007 After 43 years of service at SJND, I retired in 2007. Since then, I’ve continued to call Alameda home, but have spent lots of time traveling outside the U.S., including throughout Northern Europe and the Caribbean. I love to spend time with my two children, or work in the yard and garden. I also get together often with my former colleagues and attend as many class reunions as I can. Favorite Memories? I attended about 20 different Kairos retreats and really enjoyed being

a part of that program. I also have fond memories of working with the basketball program during the Jason Kidd days, serving as the administrative liaison and volunteering at games.

Robert Sickenger ’54

(Above) Mr. Gravem attends as many SJND reunions and alumni events as he can. Mr. Sickenger likes to work on his vintage ’65 Mustang.

Mustang. I follow the activities at SJND and help when I can. I’m also a great fan of SJND basketball and I attend as many games as I can.

Former Counselor and Teacher, 1963-1998

Favorite Memories?

Since my retirement from SJND, I enjoy spending time with my children and my four grandchildren; two in Virginia, and two in Folsom. I also enjoy woodworking, playing golf with former SJND teachers, and traveling to interesting places when possible. I enjoy reading, listening to music and working on my “vintage” ’65

There are several favorite memories from my years at SJND among them being: working with dedicated people, the development of the instrumental music program, introducing soccer to the athletic program and coaching the team to the league championship, and being honored by my French class. Fall 2019 | Update 5

I take watercolor classes... I also continue to write poetry and still help out with PRISMS when asked; I work with Colette Gunn-Graffy to choose our Poet Laureate. I'm also a member of Alameda Island Poets.

Betsy Norris

Former Teacher, 1982-2018 I retired in 2016, but in 2017 former principal Ken Jennings asked if I would return to teach an English Workshop to our St. Elizabeth transfer students. That was such a blessing for all of us as it was a difficult and painful transition for them, but we welcomed them warmly and helped them adjust to a new school... That year I also mentored some new teachers. Then I re-retired. Then Judy KoneffKlatt, former SJND teacher and current St. Theresa principal, asked me if I would mentor the new Spanish teacher, which I have been doing since. I am also teaching English to a nun from Mexico. I went to Spain last year where I met a close childhood friend whom I hadn't seen in 50 years! In the Philippines earlier this year, I spent time with family and reunited with a group of high school classmates. We may have gotten shorter and wider, but our memories were sharp!

6 6Saint Saint Joseph Joseph Notre Notre Dame Dame

SJND is still so much a part of my life: I work on the Advancement Committee, sub Spanish classes and continue working with Didi Kubicek on Kairos Parent Night. I go to the gym, much to Don Lippi's delight! I "do lunch" with friends like Fr. Jimmy Macalinao ("Mr. Mac"), La Penca Azul with Gail Rodrigues and Kristina Taylor (a tradition we have continued from the time we were all department chairs). Kathie Montserrat and I go to the movies together. Quite a number of my former students keep in touch via email and in person. I love hearing from them about their families and what they have been doing. Teachers don't usually know how much and in what way they have influenced their students. The best part of retirement, other than that I don't have to get up at 5:45 a.m., is that I get to spend time with my family. My husband and I walk together and visit our grandchildren; we're involved in our parish; he gets to be the official taster of my desserts (there's always a stash of individual portions in the freezer; it's his treasure hunt). Favorite Memories? Where do I begin? I treasure my 35 years as a Catholic educator at SJND, my second home where I taught Spanish and English. I miss my students and my colleagues. I still refer to it as "my school." I can still picture Tony Aiello hiring me at the boys' school, the big welcome

from Georgia Vlahos, the first faculty member I met at our retreat in San Damiano. I remember teaching English Workshop and English 1C before and after lunch to a class of all boys who would rather be anywhere other than in my classroom. My first year they rearranged the room so all their seats faced the back wall. I was not amused! Years later, one of them was the electrician who came to install my kitchen lights. Perhaps the phrase that most resonates with my students is "con ganas se puede" (with motivation you can do anything). Every year, in the class before the AP Spanish test, I used to stand on my desk (the kids didn't know what crazy thing I was

SeĂąora Norris spends quality time with her husband and grandchildren.

doing this time) to give them my pep talk, basically, that my view from up there went far and wide, just as they had progressed in four years. They were ready! They had to repeat our motto, each time louder and louder. I tried to instill this motivation in all my classes... Once a mother, exasperated at her daughter's behavior, asked that her daughter be transferred to my class. When I asked why, she replied: "because you kick

UPDATE FEATURE butt, Mrs. Norris." I used to sometimes wear costumes (every year as a wizard, sternly scaring some students that if they didn't sit down immediately, I would turn them into frogs). Other times I dressed up and rapped as MC Shakespeare or taught my verb raps so they would remember conjugations. One Halloween I rapped in a nun's costume! Students took videos and threatened to put them on YouTube.

Gordie Johnson Former Basketball Coach and Teacher, 1982-2002

After leaving SJND, I went to UC Santa Cruz as the Head Basketball Coach for 10 years. I also ran basketball camps for Nike and Johnson’s Basketball Camps. This was a great time because it was something that was in my heart and I loved coaching. I also started working summer leagues for teams such as the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks. I was lucky enough to work with the Nets and the

Bucks for pre-season training camp before going into retirement. While I was in retirement, I spent a lot of time with my 10 grandkids and family. My youngest son, Josh Johnson was playing professional football so I had a chance to watch him play. After five years of trying to stay retired, I took some volunteer jobs, including working at the Oakland International Airport and coaching at a middle school in San Francisco. Last year, I got back into high school athletics, coaching at Leadership Public School (LPSH) in Hayward at the request of one of my grandkids... We had a great season, winning the league championship for the first time in the school’s history. This year, I was offered the Athletic Director position as well as the Head Coach position again.

Favorite Memories? I have so many great memories at SJND, including meeting, working with and becoming friends with many people, not only at the school, but in the community. Most of my memories are centered around basketball and my mentor and great friend, Frank LaPorte. In my 20+ years at the school, we traveled all over the country, coaching against some of the best players to lace up their sneakers. We really had some memorable trips, too many to go into without leaving some very important people out. I will never forget all the goodwill that we shared on our trips: visiting hospitals, youth centers, retirement homes, underprivileged youth centers were some of the highlights of my time at SJND.

In addition to working at the airport and coaching/serving as Athletic Director, I attend my grandkids’ football and basketball games and spend a lot of time with my wife, Leslie.

Coach Johnson is the Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at Leadership Public School (LPSH) in Hayward. Last year they won the league championship.

Christine Micheli Former Teacher, 1978-2011

My husband, former faculty member Greg Fonzeno and I live in Acworth, Georgia, which is in the Atlanta area. We live 20 minutes from our daughter Nicole ’03, her husband Rob, and our

grandson Michael (age 5). I'm keeping in touch with my teacher side by helping out kids in our neighborhood with reading, grammar, essays, and science projects! Greg is very involved in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. We miss California family, including those from SJND. I love to keep up with "my kids" on Facebook!

Favorite Memories? I have some wonderful memories from SJND. The two I'm most proud of: when my newspaper/yearbook staff put together the elementary school's whole yearbook in one week so they wouldn't miss their deadline, and when the National Honor Society organized a school-wide Christmas present and food drive for 16 families. Ms. Micheli relocated to Georgia with her family.

school, coach CYO basketball, or participate in various parish events and activities. It is such a tremendous blessing to be an instrument of God’s mercy and love in the midst of our challenging times. I look forward to many more years of fruitful ministry in our Diocese. Favorite Memories?

Father Jimmy Macalinao

Former Campus Minister (Mr. Mac), 2005-2015 Since moving on from SJND, I studied and finished my formation to priesthood at Pope Saint John XXIII in Weston, Massachusetts for three years. It was a wonderful and great experience for me to be at the seminary, as well as to minister in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston. After my studies, I came back to the Bay Area and on May 26, 2018 I was ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Oakland. I am presently serving as a parochial vicar at Most Holy Rosary Parish in Antioch. I am also part of the formation board for the candidates to permanent diaconate in the Diocese. Being a priest is such an amazing and grace-filled vocation. I am thankful to God for calling and choosing me to be his servant despite my weaknesses and shortcomings in life. For me, every day is a gift and an opportunity to accompany people closer to Jesus Christ, whether I celebrate Mass, hear Confessions, visit and anoint the sick, officiate weddings, give spiritual counseling, teach at

The most memorable experience for me in my 10 years of working at SJND is collectively our Kairos retreats. These retreats were so powerful and were graced moments. I am honored and humbled to be given an opportunity to walk with our students in their journey. Every retreat was the work of the Holy Spirit: moving and special. Because the students were sincere and open to each other, they came to realize in a deeper way God’s love and compassion for them and the care and unfailing support of the school community. Kairos was truly unforgettable because it helped many students to start their healing process and transformation. They have discovered God’s mercy and the challenge to live a life of kindness and service to others.

In addition to serving as a parochial vicar, Fr. Jimmy (formerly Mr. Mac) coaches CYO basketball for Most Holy Rosary Parish in Antioch.

Judy KoneffKlatt

Former Student Activities Director and Teacher, 1992-2006 When I left SJND, I took the position of Principal at St. Theresa School in Oakland. This was a new and exciting challenge. I definitely knew I would miss teaching Spanish so I continue to teach grade 8. That is the fun part of my day. Of course, I have a Student Leadership Team here, too. I still attend the annual CADA conference to get my energy up for student activities. Our events are not as elaborate as high school but they are fun, too. Favorite Memories? I have a myriad of memories; each one is my favorite and that is what makes SJND such a special place. I remember “Mrs. KK” now serves as planning Principal at St. Theresa now all of the School in Oakland. Leadership Retreats with the Campus Life Team, working on Spirit Week, and planning rallies and even bus trips to the basketball state championships. Working with the students to find new games and ways to energize the students, all the while receiving support from faculty and staff for all our creative and sometimes outlandish ideas made it a fun challenge.

Q: You were already familiar with the SJND community before you started teaching here in summer 2019 (Anna’s husband is former Dean of Students Doug Evans). What has been your favorite thing about working at SJND thus far?

Q: You have a very impressive academic background. Tell us about your academic trajectory and what inspired it. A: When I started my master’s program at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, I thought my interest in theology was purely academic. But ultimately, I felt

like the abstract philosophical discussions of the classroom were too far removed from ordinary life. I wanted more contact with the average person in the pew and their stories. So after completing that program, I went into college campus ministry rather than jumping right into a PhD program. That’s where I found a passion - and vocation - for

A: There is a lot of positive energy amongst both the students and staff at SJND; it is very warm and welcoming. It has been great working with people I have already known for years through Doug.

Q: You teach an intriguing course about Religious Themes in Film and Literature, even looking at religious themes in zombie movies! What are some surprising things you’ve learned while teaching the course?

Faculty and Staff Anniversaries SJND is happy to welcome new faculty and staff to our family and thank the existing members of our community for their years of dedicated service. This year, we celebrate many anniversaries of our committed faculty and staff, each of whom make SJND a wonderful place to work, lead and serve.

A: Film has always been a passion for me, so I love teaching this course. I have had some amazing discussions with our students that have helped me see films I know well in a different light. The course has reminded me that popular culture is an important text. Learning how to think about it critically and identify its complex messages is important.

Congratulations Class of 2019! Commencement Speaker Marielle Heller ’97 Shares Inspiring Story of Her Journey to Acclaimed Hollywood Director On Saturday, June 1, the Class of 2019, along with their families, friends and faculty and staff, gathered in the Kelly Gym to celebrate Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School’s 137th Commencement Ceremony. This sunny morning saw 110 students receive their diplomas and be sent into the world to lead joyful lives of faith, scholarship, and service. The commencement ceremony opened with comments from former principal Ken Jennings and continued with a prayer for the graduates, followed by inspiring speeches given by the commencement speaker and class valedictorian. 12 Saint Joseph Notre Dame

SJND was pleased to welcome back Alumna and Film Director Marielle Heller ’97 as the 2019 commencement speaker. Marielle is the writer and director of Diary of a Teenage Girl, and director of the Academy Award-nominated film, Can You Ever Forgive Me? Marielle’s latest directorial project, a film titled A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, stars Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers and is already garnering Oscars buzz. Marielle shared her experiences transitioning from acting to writing, and then to directing. She spoke about themes such as selfdoubt, growth and perseverance, and ultimately urged graduates to not limit themselves.

“One of the hardest moments comes when you see that your life isn’t going down the path you anticipated - when you have to decide to go a way you couldn’t have imagined. For me, that moment came when I decided to become a director. I always knew I wanted to be a theater actor. Here at Saint Joseph Notre Dame, I was in

GRADUATION RECAP

plays, and I was involved in community theater as well. I went to UCLA to study acting in theater and then worked as an actor for many years. I didn’t even consider that I would do anything else in my life. It was all I wanted from the time I was eight years old,” Marielle told the audience. “But in my late twenties something shifted and I wanted to start writing. I wanted to take more control of the stories I told. I felt people around me scoff, ‘Why did I think I knew how to write a play? Why did I think I could write a movie?’” Marielle felt others wonder. “It’s easy to look back now after I’ve directed three movies and see that this was my path. But at the time it wasn’t clear. I was taking a big leap of faith and changing the course of my life. And many days I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing. Many days I still feel that way. But I had a foundation that made me feel like I could make this shift: a great family and friends and a past in which these big transitions had shown me how to stretch and grow,” Marielle reflected. “There’s a phrase I love: ‘follow the green lights.’ Well, I was getting green lights as I pushed myself into the directing realm and it was just enough to encourage me to keep going,” she added. Finally, the Class Valedictorian Gisele de Araujo ’19 closed out the ceremony. As ASB President, captain of the

Women’s Volleyball Team, founder of the Model United Nations Club, and SJND’s representative at the 2018 Girls State, Gisele had a busy four years at SJND. She is currently enrolled in the incredibly competitive Minerva Schools at KGI, where by the end of her four years, she will have studied in San Francisco, California; Seoul, South Korea; Hyderabad, India; Buenos Aires, Argentina; London, England; and Taipei, Taiwan. Gisele shared with her classmates three life learnings and reminders for the future, her “Notes to Self: Hindsight, Insight, and Foresight.” “First, set goals and pursue them in ways that will leave you with more insight than when you began, even if you fail,” Gisele began. “Next, get comfortable being uncomfortable: put yourself in situations that make your heart race and revel in the moments that seem too good to be

true. Then, work hard, seek truth, and be generous. Finally, recognize that things are temporary, and make time to appreciate the people around you,” she concluded. Congratulations, Class of 2019! You have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone and we can’t wait to hear about life’s next adventures.

Congratulations to the following students who received annual Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School Graduation Awards, based on academic merit and character exhibited throughout their time at SJND. CAMPUS NEWS

Pilot Life Science was the main focus of the Academic Immersion opportunities offered to SJND students in spring 2019, which included trips to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, and Yellowstone National Park. Over 30 students and faculty travelled to Ecuador, starting their journey in Quito, Ecuador’s capital city high up in the Andean foothills, where they visited the Santo Domingo Monastery and the Intinan Museum. Participants also had the unique opportunity to stand in both hemispheres at the same time during their visit to the equatorial line. Their trip continued with a five-day tour around the Galapagos Islands, stopping at some of the same locations where Charles Darwin conducted the research that led to his theory of evolution. The group saw an abundance of wildlife while snorkeling and hiking, and spent time learning about the giant tortoises

from which the islands took their name. Meanwhile, in the U.S., a delegation of SJND students traveled to Yellowstone National Park with Ecology Project International, an opportunity that allowed them to become park researchers for the week. The weeklong course combined lessons on topics including the scientific process and wildlife biology, with field activities such as snowshoeing and hiking, observing wildlife in Lamar Valley, and exploring some of the park’s geothermal features.

SJND is proud to offer our students unique experiences that enable learning outside the classroom. The 2020 Academic Immersion trip, scheduled for April 2020, will explore Costa Rica and Panama.

You may know that SJND was ranked by Niche.com to be the #1 Most Diverse Private School in the Bay Area, the #2 Most Diverse Private School in California and the #3 Most Diverse Private School in America. This recognition is a testament that our educational programs, our faculty and staff, and our Catholic Community at St. Joseph Basilica continue to attract a diverse group of young people who want a quality Catholic education. What an honor to be a part of such a great institution of learning. The SJND community enables our students to learn socialization and relationship-building skills in a diverse and culturally-welcoming environment. We are committed to developing confident, open minded, effective leaders who are ready to live joyful lives of faith, scholarship and service. Our 2018-2019 results demonstrate our ability to help young people develop the skills they need to take the next steps in their lives. In fact, we are happy to report that 100 percent of the Class of 2019 enrolled in college this fall. This year, our accomplishments included a freshman class enrollment of 131, which is our highest in recent years; the establishment of three new donor-funded named scholarships of $50,000; the receipt of a $30,000 grant from HEDCO Foundation for the development and implementation of an Innovation, Design, Engineering and Art (IDEA) Laboratory; our number of repeat donors remains very high at 70 percent, which is significantly higher than the national average retention rate of 43 percent; our number of first-time donors in Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 was 200, up from 181 in FY 2018; participation in giving continues to increase across all our constituencies including Board, Faculty/Staff, Alumni, Parents and Friends; finally, our first-ever SJND Day of Giving generated $33,000, far exceeding the original goal of $10,000, and best of all, student participation in solicitation during the Day of Giving was incredible. As you review this Annual Report, you will see that faculty and staff are ensuring we are prudent stewards of the dollars contributed to SJND. It goes without saying, but I must also acknowledge the importance of the commitments and contributions of our alumni, parents and friends. Your generosity helps our school continue to be successful in helping educate our children and achieving our strategic objectives. Thanks to everyone who has supported our school. We need your continued support to fund programs that help us continue to provide students quality education in a diverse and inclusive community of learning. Thanks for caring and sharing. Richard C. Soublet Chair, SJND Board of Trustees

WHY I GIVE Janice Cantu ’66

Emerging Latina Leader Award (ELLA)

Thank you to the following donors who have recently established named scholarships benefiting SJND students. Patricia O’Hara ’67, Maureen O’Hara ’68 and Kerry O’Hara Plain ’70 The O'Hara Family Angel Fund

“When I was a student at Notre Dame High School, I thought it was all about preparing for college. When I look back at it now, I know that it was really about preparing for life and how one lives that life. In the words of Winston Churchill, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’”

Dave '55 and Pete '57 Lillevand

The Lillevand Family Scholar-Athlete Endowment “We wanted to honor our parents and to memorialize the value of combining hard work in the classroom and the athletic arena.”

Jocelyn Perez ’14

The Jocelyn Perez '14 Against All Odds Scholarship

“The Angel Fund was created to help existing students whose families have unforeseen financial hardships during the school year. This emergency fund helps defer tuition costs if families see changes in job status, health issues, death of a parent, or any unforeseen change in their financial status, showing them that their SJND family has their back.”

The Spirit of Learning Scholarship

“I founded the Spirit of Learning Scholarship to give students with learning differences the opportunity to attend Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School and to shine.”

Delight and Leonard Saxton

The Saxton Family Scholarship

“Being able to help someone pursue their education by helping them financially is the greatest blessing. I was supported through many challenging times at SJND, so I wanted to pay it forward to someone else.”

“We believe that education can change lives; not just the life of the individual, but for everyone that individual comes in contact with. To that end, we desire to promote better education in not only our own children but in the students we support here at Saint Joseph Notre Dame.”

PILOT PROFILE

Henry Awayan ’94

Professional Baker and Owner of Whisk Cake Creations Initially a one-man operation based out of a commissary kitchen on the old Alameda naval base, today, Whisk is comprised of six employees and operates out of its own Alameda studio, where they crank out 50 custom cakes per week. Pictures of their creative, moutherwatering confections fill their Facebook and Instagram feeds, from elegant, tiered wedding cakes, to an astronaut-donned birthday cake, and one that looks identical to carefullycrafted sushi rolls. Henry’s favorite cake to date is an operating wedding cake which was designed to look like a wine barrel and was specially-rigged to pour wine for toasts.

Henry Awayan began baking cakes at age 10. His first creation, a welcome-home cake for his mom who was traveling home from the Philippines, didn’t turn out. “It was rock hard,” Henry laughed. “No one ate it!” Fast forward to 2019, Henry is a well-known professional baker who has appeared on Food Network. His flourishing custom cake studio, Whisk Cake Creations, is a “Best of Alameda” winner and the go-to spot for Greater Bay Area customers seeking a special occasion cake: from birthday cakes to baby shower cakes and everything in between. Yet Henry admits he never expected baking would become his career. “I thought I would go into engineering, or architecture, or maybe something in the medical field,” Henry explained. Like many young people, Henry recalls facing the daunting challenge of determining where to go to college and what to do in life. He sought advice from his counselor, Mr. Sickenger, who asked about his hobbies and encouraged him to look into culinary school. “The rest is history,” Henry said. After graduating from culinary and pastry school, Henry worked in the hospitality industry for several years, refining his craft at different bakeries, hotels and catering companies. In 2015, he decided to finally act upon the idea of opening his own cake business, and Whisk Cake Creations was born. 34 Saint Joseph Notre Dame

“SJND definitely played a role in deciding to keep my business in Alameda. It always goes back to the community.” The latest addition to their menu? “Pup Cakes” made with dog-friendly ingredients and made to look like your furry, four-legged friend. Outside of Whisk, Henry is a father to two children whom both attend St. Joseph Elementary School. He met his wife through his baking profession, after a bride whose cake he was making suggested he meet her sister. They’ve been married for 11 years. Henry credits his supportive family with giving him the courage to take the leap and start his own business. “I thought, I can’t teach my kids to follow their dreams if I don’t follow my own,” he said. Henry has fond memories of SJND and its faculty. He speaks about the encouragement he received from Mr. Ritter, memories from Mr. Fong’s science lab, and the lasting impact Mr. Sickenger had on him. Inspired by the Catholic education he received and the community it helped create, Henry frequently gives back to SJND, donating cakes for special occasions and events. “SJND definitely played a role in deciding to keep my business in Alameda,” he said. “It always goes back to the community.”

Spring 2009 Update 3

PILOT ATHLETICS

SJND Welcomes New Athletic Director and Athletic Coordinator SJND is happy to welcome Carlos Arriaga as the new Athletic Director. Carlos is no stranger to high school athletics; he has served in Catholic education for 21 years and began working in athletic administration in 2006, most recently as an Associate Athletic Director.

“I’ve witnessed tremendous personal and moral character growth among coaches, students, and teams… It is this very work that inspires and strengthens me” Carlos says SJND’s unique community and storied athletic program grounded in faith is what drew him to the role. “My experience has exceeded my expectations from the amount of warmth, care, and support from the SJND community. Everyone has been so welcoming and everywhere I’ve turned, someone has extended themselves wanting to know how they can be of help. I’ve been so humbled by this generosity… It’s a direct reflection of the care that goes into our students and I feel so fortunate to have landed here,” said Carlos. Carlos brings a wealth of experience to SJND Athletics and looks forward to further bridging the connection between sport and faith.

“I’ve witnessed tremendous personal and moral character growth among coaches, students, and teams when there is a deeper understanding of this connection, and it is articulated, and practiced… It is this very work that inspires and strengthens me,” he added. While not new to the Pilot community, SJND also welcomes alumna Jessica de Mesa ’12 as Athletic Coordinator. Previously, Jessica served as Learning Support Coordinator and Counseling Administrative Assistant at SJND.

Pilot’s Act of Sportsmanship Catches Attention of Local, National Media After a Concord High School athlete took a bad fall in the 2019 NCS Track & Field Meet of Champions 800 meter race, a picture of Emily Perez ’19 helping carry the athlete off the track spread across social media. The photo and Emily’s part in helping the athlete was picked up by news outlets ranging from The Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle, to Runner’s World and USA Today. Following a successful running career at SJND, Emily made her debut this fall as a member of the Oregon State University Cross Country and Track & Field Programs.

Congrats, Emily! You make us all Proud to be Pilots!

IN MEMORIAM

Remembering Daniel Curry

The Voice of the Pilots JULY 1, 1951 - SEPTEMBER 20, 2019 Mr. Daniel Curry passed away in September following a courageous battle with cancer. Dan served the SJND community for 17 years, including as Athletic Director, Associate Athletic Director, P.E. and health teacher, and as the beloved voice of the Pilots at many athletic competitions. As a young child growing up in Oakland, Dan always loved sports. He graduated from St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley and went on to earn his degree in English Literature from Gonzaga University. In 1973, Dan began teaching and coaching at a high school in Billings, Montana. Dan coached football, basketball, track and even drove the team bus. If there is a sport that Dan truly fell in love with, it was volleyball. In 1978, Dan served as the Director of Operations for the Seattle Smashers, a professional volleyball team. Throughout his life, he helped USA Volleyball and served as a member of the All Tournament Committee. In the 80s and 90s, Dan entered collegiate athletic administration where his passions served various institutions, such as Gonzaga University, Santa Clara University and San Jose State University. Dan’s talents included serving as a public address announcer and a radio color commentator. Most recently, he worked as the emcee and announcer at Kevin Durant's Fantasy Basketball Camps. Dan blessed the SJND community in 2000 when he was hired as Athletic Director and Health and Physical Education teacher. Under his leadership, SJND won dozens of league titles, six North Coast Section Championships and two CIF State Championships in various sports. He was a key figure in the reconstruction

and renovation of the Kelly Gymnasium which opened in 2007. Dan also helped organize SJND's current Booster Club which helps generate funds for athletics. As the voice of the Pilots, he introduced the starting lineups and read sponsorships during North Coast Section and CIF State Championship events.

Dan was a big supporter of student activities, pictured here on a Kairos retreat with fellow SJND Athletics staff and friends, Mr. Pondok, Coach Castillo and Coach Lippi.

Dan’s kind demeanor and care for SJND and its students was evident in everything he did. Over the years, Dan mentored many coaches and developed them into great role models for studentathletes. He participated in school activities, such as retreats, field trips and theater. Dan even had a guest cameo appearance in one of the SJND musical productions and received a huge roar from the crowd when he appeared on stage. In 2011, Dan received the California State Athletic Directors Association, Section Athletic Director of the Year award for the North Coast Section. He resigned in 2011 as the Athletic Director but remained a part of the community as a teacher until 2017 when he officially retired. We will fondly remember Dan’s warm voice ringing throughout the Kelly Gym for years to come. He will be greatly missed by all.
