GAME OVERVIEW SAN JUAN HILLS–TRABUCO HILLS SERIES

The Stallions begin league play tonight and face off against the Trabuco Hills Mustangs. Trabuco Hills came out victorious in their first and only matchup in 2011, winning by a score of 48-14. The Stallions are 3-5 in league play since joining the South Coast League and will look to turn the corner this year and compete for a league title. This is the Mustangs’ first year back in the South Coast League after spending a few years in the Sea View League. Trabuco has struggled a bit so far this year coming into tonight’s game with a record of 2-4. Most of their games have been highly competitive with the exception of last week’s 55-14 loss to Corona Del Mar. The Stallions have continued to find ways to win despite some struggles of their own and currently hold a record of 5-1. They’re coming off what may be their most exciting game of the season as they beat Great Oak 24-21 in an overtime thriller.

TODAY’S STORYLINES • The Stallions begin league play tonight and will look to improve their 3-5 South Coast League record.

• Senior lineman JJ Glass has also been a key performer on the defense.

He currently has 47 tackles, 15 of them for a loss, and 8.5 sacks. JJ is now the single season record holder for sacks.

• The Stallions will look to even the score and bring their all-time record vs. Trabuco Hills to 1-1

• Offensively, senior running back Brock Cazel returned after sitting out in the Huntington Beach game due to injury to record 130 yards rushing on 15 carries. He also scored 2 touchdowns in the come from behind victory over Great Oak. Brock also starts at safety and has 23 tackles and 2 interceptions on the season.

• The Stallion defense has been stingy against the run all year. They have yet to allow over 100 yards rushing this season. Great Oak had 70 yards rushing and 140 yards passing last week.

• Senior defensive back Cameron Buchanan had his best career performance last week in the overtime win over Great Oak. He recorded 18 total tackles, 9 of them solo, and added a sack and 2 tackles for loss.

He now has 59 tackles on the year which raises his career total to 161.

STALLIONS TO WATCH #29 Cameron Buchanan Position: DB • Ht: 5-9 • Wt: 165 • Grd: 12 Buchanan is the other half of a hard hitting Stallion secondary that has been a huge part of the team’s success so far in the 2016 season. As a safety this year, Buchanan has already recorded 5 interceptions including a two interception performance in the Stallion victory over Huntington Beach in week 4.

Against Edison in week 3, Buchanan was the team leader with 15 total tackles and another interception. In his twenty one game Stallion career, he has compiled 143 total tackles, eight interceptions, four tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. More impressive than his stats however is his 4.0 G.P.A that he maintains despite the huge amount of time that he puts into game preparation each week. Buchanan’s future plans include attending BYU next fall.

#8 Brock Cazel

Position: RB/DB • Ht: 5-11 • Wt: 180 • Grd: 12 Cazel led the San Juan Hills rushing attack last week with a pair of second half touchdowns that propelled the Stallions to a come-from-behind victory.

This week he will look to continue the momentum as he again leads a Stallion backfield that has been a little banged up lately. Cazel is a downhill style of runner who would rather run through a defender than try to avoid him, yet his ability to see cutback lanes in the Stallion zone blocking scheme has been a large piece to his success this season. So far in the 2016 season, Cazel has accounted for over 300 yards rushing and five touchdowns. He is also the starting safety on defense for the stallions and has made many receivers sorry they caught the ball over the middle with some violent tackles over the years.

On defense, Cazel has recorded 19 tackles and 2 interceptions this season.

After high school, Cazel plans to attend college and study business.

#15 Quinn Ginieczki

Position: RB • Ht: 5-9 • Wt: 175 • Grd: 12 A senior running back, Ginieczki has been called upon this season after some injuries in the Stallion’s backfield created an opportunity for him. Getting the start in week four against Huntington Beach, Ginieczki led the ground attack for the Stallions as they easily cruised to a 38-6 win at The Badlands. Ginieczki has mostly played running back during his four years at San Juan Hills, but he did play a little safety and corner during his freshman and sophomore seasons. His interests outside of football include traveling and exploring the outdoors. In the fall of 2017 Ginieczki plans to attend Texas A&M University and study mechanical engineering.

In 1998, Marcus Brady achieved Freshman of the Year honors in the Big Sky Conference as he threw for 2974 yards. When ‘San Juan Hills’ was first adopted as the name of CUSD’s 6th high school, many people recalled the story of Teddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

That battle made famous the heroism of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. At the time, reporter Richard Harding Davis described the Rough Rider charge up San Juan Hill: “Colonel Roosevelt, on horseback, broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and finding its men lying in his way, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’…It was a miracle of self-sacrifice, a triumph of bulldog courage, which one watched breathless with wonder.”

As we continue to lay the foundations of the traditions at SJHHS, our Stallion Fans will also use the nickname, Rough Riders to represent the values that San Juan Hills finds important.

We are confident that the images of the Stallion and the Rough Riders will provide vivid symbols which will reflect a community that is committed to providing the best educational, athletic and co-curricular experiences for our kids.

Mascot

Stanley the Stallion saw his first action as the mascot in the school’s first varsity football game on September 5, 2008. The Stallions defeated Godinez High School 35-12 as Stanley cheered from the sidelines with the band and cheerleaders. As the face of the Stallions, Stanley will lead the San Juan Hills athletics teams into the future.
