GAME OVERVIEW SAN JUAN HILLS – TESORO SERIES

This is the first meeting between the Stallions and the Titans who are separated by only 8 miles along Antonio Parkway. The Stallions used Titan Stadium as its home field for the first three years as it awaited the completion of their own stadium. Now after seven years, the schools will finally square off at The Badlands.

Tesoro enters tonight’s game at 7-2 overall and 2-1 in South Coast League and would be considered by most as the favorite. They were off last week after beating Dana 52-12 on October 24th. Currently they are ranked #23 in the state and #7 in Orange County. The Stallions are 4-5 overall and 1-2 in league after defeating Dan Hills 35-21 last week to get their first South Coast League victory. The matchup has playoff implications for both teams. Should the Titans win, they would secure 2nd place in the South Coast League and a guaranteed playoff spot. However, if the Stallions can pull off the upset there would likely be a three-way tie for 2nd place between El Toro, Tesoro, and San Juan Hills. The guaranteed playoff off spot would then come down to a coin flip with the losers having to file for an at-large berth.

TODAY’S STORYLINES

• The Stallions home record improved to 12-3 after the 74-56 loss on October 17th to El Toro. It was the highest point total in any game at The Badlands and was likely one of the highest scoring games in Orange County history.

• During South Coast League play, the Stallion offense has averaged 37 points per game. They had only been averaging 25 points per game prior to league play.

• Junior quarterback Patrick O’Brien has amassed 1020 yards of total offense during South Coast League play completing 73% of his passes. Overall, he has thrown for 1665 yards with 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He has also rushed for 537 yards on 107 carries scoring 9 touchdowns.

• Senior runningback Mike Miscione has also turned it up a notch for league play. He rushed for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns against El Toro to open league play and followed it with a 77 yards performance against Mission Viejo and 143 yards against Dana Hills. He also has 20 receptions on the year.

• On the defensive side of the ball, junior outside linebacker Tim Newman leads the Stallions with 68 tackles, 6 sack, 11 quarterback pressures and 8 tackles for loss.

• Sophomore defensive tackle JJ Glass has become a presence in the middle of the defense and has double digit tackles against Mission Viejo (10) two weeks ago and is now 8th on the team in tackles with 37 leading all defensive lineman.

• After giving up 74 points to El Toro, the Stallion defense had much to prove in the weeks to follow. They responded versus Mission Viejo with an improved performance limiting the Diablos to 93 yards rushing and 209 yards passing. Last week, Dana Hills managed to only rush for 66 yards and mustered 9 first downs.

As an assistant in the South Coast League under head coach Armando Gonzalez, Aaron helped lead the Dolphins to the CIF Playoffs in 2 out of the 3 seasons that he coached. During this time he also coached quarterbacks Grant Schwartz and Sean Schroeder who both went on to receive Division 1 scholarships.

Aaron returned from Montana in early 2003 to start a career in high school education and coaching. He received his first opportunity at JSerra in the school’s first year of operation coaching the upstart Lions freshman squad.

His knowledge of the game and his experience with playing and coaching at high levels allow him to have a unique perspective on the game of football. Through my experiences with him, I have no doubt that he will do a great job with the San Juan Hills High School football program.”

1999-2002: Asst. Coach, Montana State University

Aaron coached the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs while at Montana State. Under Aaron’s leadership running back Ryan Johnson became Montana State’s all-time leading rusher as the Bobcat offense consistently ranked in the top half of the Big Sky Conference in rushing and total offense. Aaron also coached All-America wide receiver Junior Adams who now coaches at Eastern Washington University.

Other Highlights:

Aaron’s coaching career began as a Matador assistant where he tutored quarterback Marcus Brady. In 1998, Marcus Brady achieved Freshman of the Year honors in the Big Sky Conference as he threw for 2974 yards. He finished the year ranked #9 in the nation is passing efficiency and #13 in total offense.

CIF had 14 tackles helping the Stallions win their first playoff game ever…This year, he suffered a broken hand in training camp but returned against Capistrano Valley and recorded 8 tackles… he currently has 20 total tackles and has played both safety and corner throughout the year.

A two-year letterwinner…has played in close to 20 games on special teams and at tight end for San Juan Hills…He has started in all 9 games during his senior year…in those games he has 16 catches for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns with a 9 catch/99 yard game against Mission Viejo.

Jacob hopes to be a anesthesiologist and plans on attending Brigham Young University after he graduates…Born on July 15, 1997 in Provo, Utah, his most memorable sport experience is being a part of the SJH football program all four years…He enjoys watching the New England Patriots and being as nice as possible to his teammates…His favorite food is steak…favorite player is Tom Brady…and loves all his teachers.

A two-year letterwinner…has started in 21 consecutive games (a school record) at defensive back…In 2012, he saw limited action in 2 varsity games but was able to play with his older brother Garrett Grutz…As a junior, he earned 2nd Team All League honors after recording 49 tackles and 1 interception while starting in all 12 games for the league champion Stallions…This year, he has started in all 9 games and is 3rd on the team in tackles with 58 and has 3 interceptions…He is also one of the three captains for the Stallions in 2014.

Dalton hopes to study business or mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley after graduating… born April 2, 1997 in Laguna Niguel, CA, Dalton enjoys watching football…eating buffalo wings and cheesecake…watching Sherlock…and cheering for the Baltimore Ravens…his favorite teacher is Mr. Baker…and he hopes to visit Italy one day…Dalton’s football career at San Juan Hills was abruptly halted when he sustained a C-2 spinal fracture during a car accident during the summer going into his senior year… though no longer able to play full contact football, he was able to start dressing in uniform with the team during the Mission Viejo game and was able to take the field when the Stallions took a knee to end the game during the Dana Hills win.

Tim hopes to study business at Chico State after graduating… born on July 5, 1996, he enjoys steak and milkshares…listening to A$AP Rocky…and rooting for the San Diego Chargers…his favorite teacher is Mrs. Kolenick…and his favorite memory is winning the Sea View League Championship against Dana Hills in 2013…Tim also plays varsity baseball for San Juan Hills.

A two-year letterwinner…has played at quarterback and defensive back, with a number of games at punter for San Juan Hills...though his playing time has been limited, he boasts a 177.1 quarterback rating this year after throwing one pass for one 56-yard touchdown in the win against Marina.

Currently, he is the 3rd leading receiver in school history with 69 receptions.

A two-year Varsity letter winner….has played in 23 games in his career at San Juan Hills as a defensive lineman. As a junior he played primarily as a backup for the league championship run. Ian has played in all 9 games this season with 25 tackles, 1 sack and 2 caused fumbles.

A two-year letterwinner…has played in 19 career games at runningback during his career at San Juan Hills… He debuted for the Stallions as a Freshman in 2011 against Capistrano Valley with 7 carries for 17 yards…He did not play as a sophomore because of a back injury but returned in 2013 and rushed for 833 yards on 134 carries as a junior with 9 touchdowns earning him the SJH Offensive Impact Player Award…This year, in 7 games he has rushed for 637 yards on 136 carries and scored 8 touchdowns with a 159 performance versus El Toro… He has now rushed for 1487 yards in his career, which puts him as the 2nd leading rusher in school history with 1 game to play.

Ian is on the Principals Honor Roll and hopes to attend Boise State University. Born October 31, 1997 in Sacramento, California … active in Dana Mariners, plays Rugby for Dana Rugby club and San Clemente Gators. Most memorable sport moment was winning the Sea View League Championship last season. Ian also enjoys fishing, hunting, and sailing.

#11 Jacob Pyatt (LB/TE)

A two-year varsity letter winner….Jacob has played in 14 games as a Stallion linebacker and tight end. As a junior, he played mostly on special teams. As a senior, he has excelled in learning multiple positions and leads by example with crushing physicality. This year he has started in all 9 games, has recorded a total of 44 tackles, including 25 solo tackles and 1 sack.

Mike hopes to attend the University of Arizona upon graduation.

Born on January 1, 1997 in Newport Beach, he thinks his intellect is his best asset…his favorite player is Walter Payton…his favorite teacher is Ms. Gideon…and his most memorable sports moment was playing in the Sea View League Championship in 2013 which saw the Stallions defeat Dana Hills 28-21.

A three-year letter winner…Has started in 21 consecutive games at offensive line with a career total of 31 game started (both school records) …As a sophomore, he started 9 games…As a junior, he started all 12 games and earned 1st Team All League, All-CIF and All-League honors for the league champion Stallions…This year, he has started in all 9 games and been a leader both on and off the field…He is one of the three Captains for the Stallions in 2014.

Jacob plans on studying Sports Medicine at San Diego State University and hopes to be an Athletic Trainer. Born August 19, 1997 at Mission Hospital, he enjoys spending time with his teammates and friends…his best asset is his punishing style of play…his greatest memory is achieving a Sea View league championship.

A two-year letterwinner… has started in 21 consecutive games (a school record) at outside linebacker…As a junior he started in all 12 games finishing the year with 73 tackles and 2 sacks earning 2nd Team All Sea View League honors…

This year, he has started in 9 games and is 2nd on the team in tackles with 60 and has caused 5 fumbles…In his twoyear varsity career, he has recorded 133 tackles (76 solo) and is one of the most versatile players to wear the Navy & Gold.

Jake hopes to major in politics and would like to get a scholarship to play football in college …Born on January 29th, 1997 in Newport Beach…His most memorable sports moment is beating Dana Hills for the league championship in 2013…Likes to watch The Walking Dead...Favorite teams are the Minnesota Vikings and the Oregon Ducks…His favorite athlete is Kobe Bryant and he would like to go to Fiji since he has never been there.

CLASS OF 2015 Meg Bergstrom

great student by maintaining a high GPA and by taking AP classes. Yvonna’s favorite teacher is Mrs. Boggio. In ten years, she hopes that she will be married, have a family of her own, and hold a high position in the hotel industry.

Meg Bergstrom was born on March 14, 1997 in Mission Viejo, California.

She enjoys the beach, spending time with friends and loves her family. Meg has been on cheer for the past 4 years.

She is also very involved with ASB having served as Freshman President, Sophomore Vice President, Junior class President and this year holds the position of ASB Vice President. She is a member of National Charity League and enjoys volunteering her time for local philanthropies – her favorite is Boy’s Town or Laura’s House. Meg looks forward to college, most likely out of state and would love to be an event planner one day. Her favorite memories of cheer have been all the laughs at cheer camp, making up new cheers and the lifelong friendships she has made. Meg has loved bringing her positive attitude and undying energy to cheer on her Stallions at every game!

Addison Doezie

Addison Doezie was born May 9, 1997 in St. Louis, Missouri while her father was attending Washington University Medical School. She plans to attend Brigham Young University next fall and study communications and visual arts.

Addison loves to travel with her family, go to the beach, and make people laugh.

Dance has been a big part of her life and she has enjoyed competitive dancing and is currently on the SJHHS Advanced Dance Productions.

Receiving the “Most Valuable Award” and having the opportunity to serve as one of the song captains during her four years on the cheer squad will be two of her favorite memories. She is grateful for her cheer team and the lifelong friendships she has made.

Addison is a happy and positive person and you can’t help but smile when you are around her. In the next ten years, Addison plans to go to college, possibly serve an LDS mission, get married, and start a family.

Tori Cachia

Tori Cachia was born on February 16, 1997 in Irvine. She hopes to study communications at Cal poly San Luis Obispo. Tori enjoys dancing and spending time with her friends and family.

As a member of the pep squad Tori was awarded most inspirational cheerleader during junior year. Tori’s favorite memory was cheering and dancing with her sister during her sophomore year. In 10 years, Tori hopes to be graduated from college and starting a successful career.

Taylor Goodwin

Taylor Goodwin, Born on May 31, 1997, has grown up along the coast of California all her life. Attending San Juan Hills all four years has helped her make life long friends and also helped grow stronger bonds between her fellow class. She has been on the cheer team for 3 years and considers it as her second family. She loves showing support for the Stallions by cheering at all Varsity Football and Basketball games and also loves getting her school pumped at pep rally’s. Her most favorable memory in high school was when she was elected to be apart of the 2014 Homecoming court. After High School, she plans on attending an art institute to further her passions in film, photography, and art. She feels blessed to have accomplished multiple goals with the help of her friends and family in just a matter of four unforgettable years.

Yvonna Castillo

Yvonna Castillo, born on March 23, 1997, in Anaheim, California, aspires to go to USD and one day become a hotel manager. Yvonna enjoys spending time with her family and friends and is a devout Catholic. In addition, Yvonna has been on the Honor Roll every year even including middle school and is also a Servant Leader at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and NHS member, and a Link Crew Leader for San Juan Hills. She loves being a member of the San Juan Hills Varsity Pep Squad and enjoys cheering for all of the varsity games with her teammates. Honor Society and The National Association of High School Scholars. She passed and completed all of her AP Exams. She has an Academic GPA of 4.45 and is on track to graduate valedictorian. In addition to dancing and cheering, Taylor loves to read, travel, and hang out with family and friends. Taylor enjoys helping others and even served a 3 week humanitarian mission in the Amazon River Region of Brazil last summer. She loves attending San Juan Hills High School and thinks we have the best teachers and students on Earth.

Jessica Herbert, born on January 12,1997 in Riverside, California, aspires to attend San Francisco State University and become a physical therapist. She enjoys hanging out with friends, cheering, and music. She was an all-star cheerleader for 7 years, and cheered at CSA All-stars.

Jessica’s most memorable moment of SJHHS cheer was making Varsity, and becoming close with her teammates. This was Jessica’s first year of SJHHS cheer, and she is glad that she made the decision to join the team. In ten years, she hopes to be starting a family, and working as a physical therapist.

Masha Manko

Masha Manko, born on June 16, 1997, in Los Angeles, aspires to go SDSU and one day become a sports physical therapist. Along with her perfect attendance, Masha earned the “sensational stallion” award on the Varsity Pep Squad her junior year. She loves bringing smiles and laughter to all the girls on the team, as well as her fellow stallions. Masha also enjoys being so close with all her girls on the team. Masha’s most memorable sports moment was when the SJHHS football team won league her junior year. She enjoys going to all the games and school events, and the great vibes all the fans bring. Masha has learned a lot from being on pep squad but what she will always cherish the most is the friendships she has made through the years.

Samantha Hwang

Samantha Hwang, born on May 27, 1997, in Santa Ana at the Saint Joseph Hospital, aspires to go to San Diego State University and one day become an entrepreneur. Samantha enjoys cheerleading, traveling, photography, and spending time with her friends and family. She spends half her time working at Brandy Melville and representing brands such as O’Neill. Furthermore, she has modeled for several companies and has been featured on Fox’s Good Day L.A. One of her most memorable sports moments was when the SJHHS football team won the 2013 Capo game and the whole student section rushed the field. In ten years, she hopes that she will be living the in the city running her own company and starting a family.

Morgan Montero

Morgan Montero, born on December 4, 1996, in San Juan Capistrano, aspires to be a Communications Major. She plans on attending a four year university and becoming part of the cheerleading program. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, traveling with her competitive cheer team, volunteering for “Miracles for Kids”, and eating. As a member and Captain of the Varsity Cheer Squad, Morgan is able to always stay positive, motivate others and lead by example for her teammates. Her most memorable moments were being awarded Most Valuable Cheerleader and being part of the cheer team with her best friends over past four years. In ten years, Morgan hopes earn a degree, be extremely successful and have a family.

Taylor Lewis

Taylor Lewis was born on August 27, 1997 in Newport Beach, CA. She plans on attending BYU in Provo, Utah, where she will study political science and economics. In addition to being a captain of the SJHHS Song Team, Taylor received several awards on the Pep Squad including “Super Sensational Stallion,” “Most Inspirational Cheerleader,” and the “Coach’s Award.” Last year, after the Song Team was dissolved, Taylor learned to stunt and fly and was awarded the “Most Improved Cheerleader.” Taylor loves to dance and has danced competitively for almost 14 years. She is currently on SJHHS Advanced Dance Productions. She has competed in dance at Regionals and Nationals and received a scholarship to dance with the Rockettes in New York City. She put her dance experience to work by helping choreograph two homecoming half-time shows at SJHHS. Taylor is a member of the National

captain her sophomore year and Varsity Captain her senior year.

Some of her favorite memoires are bonding with all of the girls both in and out of pep squad. Being involved with this program all throughout high school, Lexi has made some of her best friends while cheering at San Juan Hills.

Natalie Owens, born on August 29, 1996 in San Clemente aspirs to go to college and one day become a Nutritionist or Nurse. Natalie enjoys being surrounded by her friends, being on Varsity cheer, and helping others. She has been a member on pep squad for all four years of high school and absolutely loves her team and coach. Natalie is applying many places and hopes to continue her cheering career in college. She knows how to put a smile on everyones face, stay positive and motivate others. One of Natalie’s most memorable moments on cheer is when the football team went to CIF the 2013-2014 year; it was definitely her favorite years on cheer.

Natalie has had such an amazing high school experience, and is grateful to have met some of her life-long friends. Her favorite teacher is Mr. Briggs and loves her cheer Coach Kelley. In about 10 years, Natalie hopes to travel to Italy, married with children, and have a successful job.

Phoebe Thompson

Phoebe Thompson, born August 26, 1996 in Mission Viejo aspires to pursue her degree in Education at UCSB. Phoebe has served her community and church through a number of events and programs for many years. She has a passion for working with young children, from leading groups at VBS, volunteering at pre-schools, and serving at the children’s activities center at a local soup kitchen.

Phoebe loves going to the beach, baking, spending time with her boyfriend Chase, and practicing cheer with her friends and younger sister Daphne. She loves to make her friends and family laugh, and is lovingly called a goofball by those who know her best. Phoebe’s most memorable moment these past four years was being on the cheer team together with her younger sister during her senior year.

Molly Rafferty

Molly Rafferty, born on August 20, 1997, in Laguna Hills, hopes to attend San Francisco State University and aspires to be an elementary school teacher. Molly enjoys hanging out with friends, being a Varsity Song cheerleader, and working at the Shake Shack. Molly earned the “Most Improved” award her sophomore year and has continued to grow in her skill and love for dance these past three years. She has made amazing friendships through cheer and has learned about team effort and motivation. Her most memorable moment was when she was able to cheer on her brother who was the kicker for SJHHS his senior year in 2012. Cheerleading has strengthened her confidence to be successful in whatever she puts her mind to. In ten years, Molly hopes she will have graduated from college, will have a job, and will be married with a family.

Mikaela Williams

Mikaela Williams, born on November 20, 1997, in Newport Beach, aspires to attend a four year University and major in Biomedical Engineering. Mikaela has a GPA of 4.2 and is currently enrolled in 5 AP courses. Mikaela has been on Pep Squad for four years, earning the Coach’s Award her sophomore year. Her most memorable moment was when the football team won the Sea View League last year and everyone rushed the field. Mikaela works at Chuck E Cheese and enjoys entertaining children. Lexi Stuart

Lexi Stuart, born on December 7th, 1996 in Palm Springs, aspires to attend a four year university in the south next fall. She enjoys spending time with friends and family. She has been involved with ASB the last two years as Junior Class Representative and Commissioner of Activities. The Rough Riders

When ‘San Juan Hills’ was first adopted as the name of CUSD’s 6th high school, many people recalled the story of Teddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

That battle made famous the heroism of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. At the time, reporter Richard Harding Davis described the Rough Rider charge up San Juan Hill: “Colonel Roosevelt, on horseback, broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and finding its men lying in his way, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’…It was a miracle of self-sacrifice, a triumph of bulldog courage, which one watched breathless with wonder.”

As we continue to lay the foundations of the traditions at SJHHS, our Stallion Fans will also use the nickname, Rough Riders to represent the values that San Juan Hills finds important.

We are confident that the images of the Stallion and the Rough Riders will provide vivid symbols which will reflect a community that is committed to providing the best educational, athletic and co-curricular experiences for our kids.

Mascot

Stanley the Stallion saw his first action as the mascot in the school’s first varsity football game on September 5, 2008. The Stallions defeated Godinez High School 35-12 as Stanley cheered from the sidelines with the band and cheerleaders. As the face of the Stallions, Stanley will lead the San Juan Hills athletics teams into the future.
