GAME OVERVIEW SAN JUAN HILLS–HUNTINGTON BEACH SERIES

San Juan Hills and Huntington Beach have faced off three times over the years with Huntington Beach coming out on top all three times. Their first meeting came in 2009 where both teams displayed dominant rushing attacks. The Stallions ran for 338 yards and 5 touchdowns while the Oilers ran for 389 and 4 touchdowns, each team averaging over 9 yards per carry. Despite a late fourth quarter surge, the Stallions came up short losing by a score of 49-35. The Stallions came up short the following year as well, losing 42-35. This time Huntington Beach relied more on their passing attack lead by quarterback Mike Chislock who was 14-17 passing with 256 yards and 2 touchdowns. The last game played in the series was in round 2 of the 2013 playoffs and once again ended in the Oiler’s favor. Lead by quarterback Kai Ross, the Oilers steamrolled the Stallions and took a 40-0 lead before finally allowing the Stallions into the endzone in the fourth quarter. Huntington Beach won by a final score of 40-12 and would go on to beat Newport Harbor in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division Championship. The Stallions come into tonight’s contest with a 3-1 record after a heartbreaking loss to Edison that came down to the very last snap. They struggled running the ball and were held to minus 17 yards in the first half and had only 40 yards in the entire game. San Juan Hills will look to bounce back and turn the tide in a series that has not gone their way up to this point.

TODAY’S STORYLINES • With the loss last week to Edison, the Stallion home record now stands at 17-6. Their losses have come to Laguna Hills (2012), Fullerton (2013), El Toro (2014), Tesoro (2014), Mission Viejo (2015), and Edison (2016). • The Stallions will look to jump start a rushing attack that could only muster 40 yards last week. Hopefully a dependable run game will add some stability to an offense that has struggled to this point. • Jacob Huff now has 21 receptions and 4 touchdowns. He is averaging about 16 yards per catch on the season. He now has 167 catches for 2362 yards and 20 touchdowns and is the career leader in each category. • Senior two-way starter Cayden McCluskey has had some success of his own in his senior season. He has recorded 20 receptions on the season and added 16 tackles starting at defensive back.

• The Oilers have scored 40 or more points in every meeting with the Stallions up to this point. A stingy Stallion defense will look to change that as they have only given up an average of 16.5 points per game this season. • The defense has been led by senior saftey Cameron Buchanan who has 36 tackles and 3 interceptions. He is on track to break the Stallion career records for tackles and interceptions. • There will be added emotion and energy as tonight is the Stallions’ 2016 Homecoming game. This school year they celebrate their 10-year anniversary which will be highlighted by a halftime show called 10 MARVELous years.

STALLIONS TO WATCH #7 Noah Edgerton Position: DE/TE • Ht: 6-1 • Wt: 220 • Grd: 12 Noah Edgerton enters his senior season as a two year varsity starter on defense. During his sophomore season, Edgerton battled injuries but still managed to play in six games for the Stallions. In those six games, he recorded 19 tackles, including 6 tackles for loss as an outside linebacker/defensive end. Also as a sophomore, Edgerton had an interception return for a touchdown against Marina High School. Edgerton rejoins the Stallion defense this season after a year away from the game as he battled and overcame synovial cell sarcoma. After this year, Edgerton has plans to be an aeronautical engineer and is considering attending Emery Riddle Aeronautical University. Off the field Edgerton enjoys working on his 1966 Volkswagen Beetle.

#65 Jason Glass Position: OL/DL • Ht: 5-11 • Wt: 260 • Grd: 12 One of the top interior defensive linemen in Orange County, JJ Glass will present major problems for opposing offenses. He is a hard nosed football player who also starts at center on the Stallions’ offense and has played every meaningful down on both sides of the ball in the first four games of the 2016 season. Glass, a resident of Ladera Ranch has been playing defense for the Stallions since his sophomore year and has played both ways since his junior season. Throughout his career as a nose guard, Glass has made many centers look overmatched, including those with scholarships to D-1 colleges such as Cal Berkeley and USC. The statistical highlight of his season so far was his performance against Capo Valley High School in week 3 when he recorded 4 sacks and was named the Defensive Player of the Week in Orange County. All told, Glass has 123 tackles, 11 sacks, 8 tackles for loss and 2 forced fumbles in 23 games for San Juan Hills. Glass also holds the school record for squat, bench press and clean. Schools interested in Glass’ services next year include SDSU, Cal Poly SLO and UC Davis. He hopes to study international business when he attends college.

#9 Jacob Huff

Position: DB/WR • Ht: 5-10 • Wt: 170 • Grd: 12 Jacob Huff, of San Juan Capistrano, is one of the top wide receivers in Orange County. His career accomplishments as a Stallion include 167 receptions for over 2300 yards and 19 touchdowns. Huff has started on varsity since his sophomore year when he was a slot receiver and kick returner. As a junior and senior, Huff played both ways splitting his time between wide receiver and cornerback. Huff recorded 82 receptions for 1300 yards and 10 touchdowns during his junior season. His 118 ypg average put him amongst the top receivers in the county last season as a junior. Huff ’s ability to split opposing defenses and catch the ball over the middle as well as his ability to run deeper routes to stretch the field for the Stallions has created nightmares for opposing defensive coordinators. Schools such as Washington State University and Puget Sound University have expressed interest in Huff so far and it is likely that more schools start taking notice soon. A member of Hope Crossing Church, Huff would like to study construction management or international business after high school. When not running past opposing safeties, Huff spends his time at Churches Beach catching waves and avoiding stingrays. 5

Aaron served an Assistant Principal at Capistrano Valley High School from 2007-2008 under former SJHHS principal Tom Ressler. When Mr. Ressler moved to San Juan Hills, Aaron came with him and served as an Assistant Principal at SJHHS from 2008-2011.

During this time he also coached quarterbacks Grant Schwartz and Sean Schroeder who both went on to receive Division 1 scholarships.

Aaron’s coaching career began as a Matador assistant where he tutored quarterback Marcus Brady. In 1998, Marcus Brady achieved Freshman of the Year honors in the Big Sky Conference as he threw for 2974 yards. He finished the year ranked #9 in the nation is passing efficiency and #13 in total offense.

When ‘San Juan Hills’ was first adopted as the name of CUSD’s 6th high school, many people recalled the story of Teddy Roosevelt and the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in 1898. That battle made famous the heroism of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. At the time, reporter Richard Harding Davis described the Rough Rider charge up San Juan Hill: “Colonel Roosevelt, on horseback, broke from the woods behind the line of the Ninth, and finding its men lying in his way, shouted: ‘If you don’t wish to go forward, let my men pass, please.’…It was a miracle of self-sacrifice, a triumph of bulldog courage, which one watched breathless with wonder.”

As we continue to lay the foundations of the traditions at SJHHS, our Stallion Fans will also use the nickname, Rough Riders to represent the values that San Juan Hills finds important. We are confident that the images of the Stallion and the Rough Riders will provide vivid symbols which will reflect a community that is committed to providing the best educational, athletic and co-curricular experiences for our kids.

Mascot

Stanley the Stallion saw his first action as the mascot in the school’s first varsity football game on September 5, 2008. The Stallions defeated Godinez High School 35-12 as Stanley cheered from the sidelines with the band and cheerleaders. As the face of the Stallions, Stanley will lead the San Juan Hills athletics teams into the future.
