1. The BIG Picture
Think of the poster as an illustrated abstract, divided into Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion sections.
Remember that a good presentation is…
i. Focused (centers around a single key message)
ii. Graphic (let graphics and images tell the story; uses text sparingly)
iii. Ordered (keeps the sequence well ordered and obvious)
2. Layout
PowerPoint is most widely used to create scientific posters. Other popular options include Canva, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, or Google Slides (freeware).
We recommend a poster size of 36” wide x 48” high (portrait orientation), but other sizes are permitted providing they fit within the provided 48” x 48” allotment. Ensure the dimensions do not exceed the capacity of the print shop.
Assume a reading distance of 4 feet (this generally means fonts no smaller than 24-pt).
3. Printing & Finishing
Save the poster as a pdf, and send off for printing. In the City of Thunder Bay, we recommend Lowerys or Lakehead University.
Although not required, posters can be laminated or printed on high quality glossy paper –they will be more durable and appealing to the eye.
Keep in mind that printing times can vary based on demand. We recommend allocating 72 hours minimum to ensure printing is completed on time.
4. Preparation
Practice. Be prepared with a 30-second take home message presentation, a 3-5 minute presentation, and a 1-minute lay presentation.
Anticipate questions and prepare responses. If the poster presenter is a CAHR Learner Award finalist, this is especially important.
