Message from the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

The Centre for Applied Health Research plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of care by bridging the gap between theory and practice. By focusing on challenges faced by our clients and professionals, applied research allows us to develop and refine evidence-based interventions that improve outcomes, streamline operations, and drive innovation. This not only strengthens our commitment to excellence but also positions us to advance practices and programming that truly make a difference.”

– Janine Black, President & CEO, St. Joseph’s Care Group

Message from the Scientific Director

The CAHR, launched in February 2015, is in its ninth year, strengthening SJCG commitment to continually improving client care by bringing together leading-edge clinicians and the brightest minds in research and evaluation. 2024 was remarkable for the CAHR and its 46 active members. Additionally, the CAHR contributed to 16 internally driven research or evaluation projects to facilitate SJCG decision-making. For example, the CAHR supported the organization via evaluation efforts, including project consultations and the annual organization-wide Client & Resident Satisfaction Survey, and began the Compassionate Care in Long-Term Care project – a research study being conducted at SJCG long-term care homes. These projects and dissemination efforts represent new knowledge relevant to the programs and services provided by SJCG.

Scientific Director, Centre for Applied Health Research (CAHR)

As evidenced by the work described on the following pages, the breadth of the expertise offered by the CAHR and our membership base is exceptional. We are working to inform the care provided at SJCG and beyond.

All CAHR members and I are proud of the achievements highlighted in this report. I look forward to building upon these successes as we enter our tenth year.

Compassionate Care in Long-Term Care: A SJCG Research Study

In 2024, the Compassionate Care in Long-Term Care Research Study, run by the CAHR at SJCG, entered Phase 1. Dr. Shane Sinclair, PhD, and founder of the Compassion Research Lab, is collaborating on this research project with CAHR at SJCG.

Background

Many residents in long-term care (LTC) have difficulty completing questionnaires due to cognitive impairments (e.g., Alzheimer’s Disease), so we rely on their care partners to provide this information. Usually, care partners are family members or loved ones who are often also the resident's substitute decision-maker, which is a person designated to make certain decisions on the resident's behalf.

Purpose

Due to the importance of care partners' standpoints and to ensure all residents' voices are equally represented, this research study was devised to develop a compassionate care measure from the perspective of LTC residents' care partners.

Importance

This study is critical because it targets a significant need in LTC to enhance the quality of care and support for some of our most vulnerable residents.

Angela Ashley, HBSc, MA Candidate

An Awardee

The St. Joseph's Care Group Award in Applied Health Research has been a tremendous support in allowing me to continue to pursue my clinical psychology master’s degree and thesis research. For the last year, I have been investigating the use of an accessible, research-based mHealth app (JoyPopTM), and its utility as an adjunct resource to support youth wellness and emotion regulation for those receiving mental health services at a local children’s mental health organization. Early findings from youth and staff interviews have suggested that the JoyPopTM app may serve as a transdiagnostic tool to reinforce in-session learning of therapeutic skills and selfregulation outside of sessions. Through this research, I have had the opportunity to explore how this app can be used and adapted to support diverse youth while working with interprofessional teams. In doing so, I have been able to study accessible technology that has the potential to foster greater community resilience and wellness. As such, I am incredibly grateful to have had the support of the St. Joseph's Care Group Award in Applied Health Research to continue to work towards my academic, research, and clinical goals.”
