1. The BIG Picture
Think of your podium presentation as an illustrated abstract divided into Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion sections.
Remember that a good presentation is…
i. Focused (centers around a single key message)
ii. Graphic (let graphics and images tell the story; uses text sparingly)
iii. Ordered (keeps the sequence well-ordered and obvious)
Given that you will only have 15 minutes, you must be concise.
2. Slides
Slides should illustrate your presentation points, not be your presentation.
Begin with a title slide and acknowledgements, followed by approximately 2-3 slides for each section of your abstract (Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion).
Aim for no more than 3-4 points per slide (in point form, not sentences) and one line per point.
Use graphics (e.g., infographics, icons) where you can to limit words.
Use at least a 20-point font size.
3. Preparation & Delivery
Practice! Recruit a lay audience and co-authors to see how your presentation goes over.
Ensure your timing is well-paced (this will usually require speaking much more slowly than you think you need to).
Refrain from reading your slides. Make your points with different words, and expand on them.
Anticipate audience questions and prepare responses.
Maintain eye contact with your audience.
