Message from the Scientific Director

Although the past few years have presented unique challenges for research communities around the world, I am pleased to report that our members have rebounded from the pandemic with superb agility

Over $17.5 million of research funding was secured by our members in 2022, which is more than double that reported in our previous year’s annual report. Forty-two articles were published in peer-reviewed journals, and 45 presentations were made at local, national, and international conferences including many face-to-face events. Likewise, many community presentations and workshops are returning to in-person formats, with a total of 28 reported by our members in 2022.

As evidenced by the work described on the following pages, the breadth of the expertise offered by our membership base is exceptional. Together, we are working to inform the care provided at St. Joseph’s Care Group and beyond.

My thanks to all, and best wishes.

Sincerely,

2

External Partners

Members of the CAHR have been working with our colleagues at the Centre for Research on Safe Driving (CRSD) at Lakehead University. Both Sacha Dubois and Hillary Maxwell are Associate Members of the Centre and Michel Bédard is the Centre’s Director. The partnership has resulted in several research projects and publications.

Our partnership with Wesway Inc., an organization that provides respite services, continues to develop. Over the years, we continued our efforts to provide an array of supports including client satisfaction, as well as evaluation for several Wesway programs funded by the Home and Community Care Support Services North West.

In 2021, the CAHR began working with partners at Matawa Education and Care Centre to develop a holistic framework to evaluate how various facets of academic, cultural, and life-skills programming are meeting the needs of the student body.

13

Core Staff

Hillary Maxwell

Research Coordinator

Hillary Maxwell, MPH, works as the Research Coordinator at the Centre for Applied Health Research with St. Joseph’s Care Group. Hillary coordinates various research projects from conception through to dissemination of results, including grant submissions, liaising with researchers, completing ethics applications, supporting data management, and facilitating knowledge translation. Her experience includes externally funded studies as well as projects initiated from within St. Joseph’s Care Group. Hillary is currently a PhD candidate in Health Sciences at Lakehead University.

Research Statistician

Sacha Dubois, MPH, is a Research Statistician at the Centre for Applied Health Research with St. Joseph’s Care Group. As a Research Statistician, Sacha applies specialized knowledge of both research methodology and advanced statistical principles to research, analysis, and educational activities. His research interests include driver safety, medication usage, health service needs and delivery, and methodological and statistical issues. Sacha is currently pursuing a PhD in Education with a focus on statistical literacy in health sciences learners

Trainees

Our ninth Northern Canada Heritage Fund (NOHFC) research intern, Natalie Mullin-Bélanger, continued her internship well into the 2022 year. In the time Natalie was with us, she was involved in several studies, thereby increasing our capacity to conduct and disseminate high quality, health-related research. Natlie concluded her time with us in December 2022, and began employment as a Health Promotion Planner at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit

14

Awards in Applied Health Research

The St. Joseph’s Care Group Awards in Applied Health Research are available to full-time graduate students at Lakehead University pursuing research related to the service areas of SJCG. The recipients must be working with a supervisor who is a member of the Centre for Applied Health Research. In 2022, the CAHR was pleased to offer this award to Lauren Dalicandro, Delaney Johnson, Tiffany Leung and Ishaq Maliq.
