ovember is a tricky month. By now I am so tired of the year and can smell the December holiday, but I’m stuck in this year-end madness. It’s beginning to feel as though my grandmother was right when she said that the end of the world is nigh. Given that she said that at every turn of events, I never believed her, but now I’m not so sure.

Q: From our understanding, South Africa was subject to heavy sanctions during apartheid, but your book tells a different story. Tell us a bit more.

A: The apartheid state under PW Botha thrived in part because of a secretive network of international sanction busters that included heads of states, arms dealers, aristocrats, bankers, spies and journalists.

We have managed to expose the identity of this network and the colourful characters that profited from the regime.

Q: How does this affect us today?

A: South Africans, like many other people, are worried about corruption and inequality. It took a team of researchers

A: We are a small non-profit organisation promoting private sector accountability for economic crime and related human rights violations in Southern Africa. Working collaboratively with other civil society organisations, we use evidence-based research and the law to promote social justice. Q: What do you hope to achieve with this epic tale?

A: I hope to show readers how little we know about many wildlife species and how amazing they are. The ultimate message is that we as humans have to learn to respect other species and give them the space they deserve to live their wild lives.

No one knew great white sharks could travel as far as 22 000km across oceans until Nicole, a great white often seen at Dyer Island off the coast of Gansbaai, was recorded doing exactly that. Nicole,

Q: What makes Nicole such a special shark?

A: Nicole was the first great white shark to be recorded making a transoceanic journey. The speed at which she travelled is still a record for her species. At the time of her voyage, great whites were protected in both South Africa and Australia, but not in the ocean in between. Her journey was one of the factors that helped secure Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) protection for her species.

Her epic journey was a major factor in triggering further research of great whites.

There’s probably nothing more distracting than a buzzing phone when you’re trying to get ‘in the zone’ on a particular task.

Depending on your phone’s settings and which apps you have, you might get notifications for everything from emails to retweets. Try turning push notifications for all non-essential apps off. It means that your phone will be less of an interruption, and you’ll likely get more done.

Creator, 22-year-old Karl Visagie, says that his program is different from other social networking sites or directories as it allows you to interact with the people around you in real time.

“The world’s most valuable commodity is networking. Having the right people supporting you is a key factor in whether your business makes it or falls flat,” says the entrepreneur.

The main idea behind the app is to allow young entrepreneurs to locate and contact potential investors. When connecting with another user, both parties are able to see each other’s CV, skillset, job title and a range of other relevant information.

“Our aim is to build a massive network of people who are actively seeking other like-minded individuals. This will, in turn, help to grow the South African economy,” adds Karl.

It has now become a sought-after gastronomic delight featuring on many menus from Sea Point to Soweto. And although wine is still the darling of pairings, there are many other beverages like beer, coffee and even tea finding the limelight in the world of pairing.

still remember the cocktail parties of yesteryear where hosts would pour up any wine and lay out an array of cheeses – most of which did not go well together. It was a pairing fiasco that eventually led to me declining any invitation with the mention of cheese and wine.

Then there was the age-old, foolproof guideline that white wine should be served with fish and red wine with meat. That was at least a start, but now it’s a whole new ball game.

Today, memorable dining experiences create harmony between glass and plate. While chocolate and cheese have been riding the wave for a while, the increase in varietals and discovery of new flavours (I’m looking at you, umami) mean that there are fresh and exciting pairings making their way onto menus.

In South Africa today, many top restaurants and wine estates, including Waterkloof Wine Estate, Test Kitchen, La Colombe and the Saxon, offer up innovative food and wine pairings that will leave your taste buds begging for more.

La Mouette Restaurant in Sea Point, Cape Town, has made wine and food pairing an everyday affair, adding a six-course tasting menu to their à la carte offering. Co-owner Gerrit Bruwer’s favourite is the pan fried calamari with a Dashi aubergine purée, fermented mushrooms and sunflower seeds married with the Oldenburg Viognier 2015.

TASTE WINE of subtlety can’t be expected to match with a rich, full and hearty dish, and vice versa. And of course, you can tweak the dish but not the wine, so always start with the wine.

A trend in South Africa is to couple traditional dishes with wine.

Dishes like deconstructed pickled fish and waterblommetjie bredie are always favourites for pairings. With the wider selection of wine cultivars available today, its easy to find the perfect wine to match meals with robust flavours. A favourite of mine is Creation Viognier paired with deconstructed Malay Hertzoggies, apricot jam and chilli jelly. It’s a flavour explosion!

Internationally, the trend is leaning towards minimalism, with less considered far superior to more. “It’s basically about the ingredients. There shouldn’t be too many flavours on the plate and none of the ingredients should be too over-processed. In the same way, the wine relies on great quality grapes and little intervention in the cellar. Plates are smaller, with no more than five flavours per portion. Texture has also become more important, and raw produce is often combined with cooked food to add freshness and texture,” says Carolyn Martin of Hemel en Aarde’s Creation Wines.

The top prize for Brut went to Overberg producer Domaine Des Dieux for their Claudia Brut MCC 2011.

The Brut Cap Classique category received the most entries, accounting for 45 of the 97 wines up for consideration, and was the best-performing class overall.

But the brilliance didn’t stop there. Judging panel convenor Heidi Duminy said the judges found the standard to be excellent, with vintage distinction playing a key role.

“The panel was particularly impressed by the 2011 wines, which are presenting gorgeous refinement, with 2015 also standing out for its character. Across the styles, time on lees was the common thread that set the ordinary apart from the outstanding. The top-scoring wines displayed purity of fruit and deft use of varieties, outstanding balance, complexity, freshness and harmony.

“There is tangible evidence of a better understanding of the intricacies of fruit quality, more strategic intent of blending in cuvées, the roles of varieties, careful use of oak and restraint of dosage,” added Heidi.

“Thanks to the dedication and passion of the producers, the MCC Association as well as consumer demand and healthy

burgeoning competition, Cap Classique offers the best value proposition to wine lovers and is brilliantly poised to continue to rise in all aspects.”

The judging panel was completed by sommelier and consultant Higgo Jacobs, wine educator and journalist Cathy Marston, as well as winemakers Elunda Basson and Johan Malan from JC le Roux/ Pongrácz and Simonsig, respectively.

A 100-point system was used, and the scores of producer judges were not taken into account for their own wines.

The annual Frans Malan Trophy, awarded to an individual for his or her exceptional contribution to the category of Cap Classique wines, went to Pieter Ferreira of Graham Beck. The farm’s Brut Zero 2005 also took top honours in the Museum Class for wines eight years or older.

Speaking at the awards function, Joaquim Sá, Managing Director of Amorim South Africa, said that the country has 220 Cap Classique producers responsible for 300 labels today.

“These producers are responsible for a product that in 2016 sold 4.4 million bottles in South Africa, a staggering growth of 24.5% from 2015,” he said. Staggering compared to the first time the competition was held, when local sales of Cap Classique

just edged the 700 000 bottles per year mark. When it comes to exports, the growth also continues with the UK, the US and African countries leading the appetite for South African bubbly.

“And the growth doesn’t stop here, as 2017 promises to excel again. As a note, our local Cap Classique cork sales for January to August are 27% up compared to 2016, so another rosy year is expected,” said Joaquim. “While there can be no doubt of the superb quality, Cap Classique has a new challenge today and must continue improving the presence of strong brands.

This is due to the stratospheric inroads made by Champagne, Prosecco and Cava in South Africa, where imports surpassed the R320 million mark in 2016, nearly as much as South African sparkling wine

exports, according to the International Trade Centre’s Trade Map.” He added that the future challenge for Cap Classique will be no different from the challenges facing the South African wine industry as a whole: creating strong brands and deploying more aggressive marketing initiatives to ensure Cap Classique continues to grow in the marketplace.

CAPE TOWN’S lonely lights

JUSTIN FOX TAKES A SLOW MEANDER AROUND THE CAPE PENINSULA TO VISIT ITS FOUR ICONIC LIGHTHOUSES AND UNCOVER THEIR TALES OF SHIPWRECKS, STORMS AND RESCUE.

Lighthouses are a symbol of hope. Something steadfast in the chaos of a stormy night. They even have a spiritual air: a guiding house of light for those in peril on the sea, the lighthouse keeper our maritime Samaritan.

Before setting off on my meander, I did a spot of reading.

I learnt that every lighthouse has its own particular sequence of flashes to distinguish it from others; sailors can simply look up the sequence to figure out where they are.

The foghorns – or nautophones – also have their own patterns of blasts to identify them, and, more recently, many are fitted with transmitters that emit a specific coded radio signal. Towers are all shaped differently and are often painted with distinct patterns so as to be identified easily from far out at sea.

One winter morning, I drove along the Cape Peninsula to pay my respects to its four lighthouses. Arriving in Simon’s Town, I stared out, as I’d done as a child, at the tall white finger in the middle of the bay.

Roman Rock was, for centuries, a hazard to ships entering Simon’s Bay. The construction of a lighthouse here was particularly tricky as the site is awash at high tide – the only one in such a position in South Africa.

In 1857 the Royal Saxon arrived in Simon’s Town with the light’s mechanism. But it would take another four years to complete the tower as high seas and strong winds allowed for only 96 working days during that period.

Two keepers manned the lighthouse on a seven-day cycle.

The narrow tower has a cramped design and, besides sound accommodation, had to provide storage space for oil, water and supplies. When the sea was rough, keepers were confined to their post for days at a time. It was a boring job for which they earned the highest salary in the lighthouse service.

In 1914, the light mechanism was automated and the tower no longer needed to be manned. So my childhood fantasy of being its keeper was, unfortunately, just that.

ighthouses are places of loneliness, drama and romance. As a child on holiday in Simon’s Town, I would stare out at False Bay and wish I was the lighthouse keeper on Roman Rock, that storm-ravaged outcrop beyond the harbour wall.

When the southeaster raged, waves would pummel the tower. No boat could approach and I pictured the keeper cut off from contact with land for days at a time. I imagined him as an old gent with a beard and a pipe, wearing sea boots, a sailor’s cap and a thick woollen jersey. He smelt of tobacco and peppered his speech with nautical terms.

His arms were covered with tattoos of mermaids and anchors, and he could tell a tale or two about shipwrecks and gales, drownings and rescues.

I pressed on down the peninsula to Cape Point, parked and hiked along a cliff-edge path towards the lighthouse in the pouring rain.

There are two structures here. The first was built in 1860, but was positioned too far up and often shrouded in fog, which is why construction of a tower closer to the waterline began in 1919.

The second lighthouse contains South Africa’s strongest lamp with a range of 35 nautical miles.

I negotiated the slippery ladders down a cliff face to the dressedstone lighthouse. It was sunset and all the tourists had departed.

Monstrous waves broke against the rocks below and sheets of rain ghosted across the ocean. Just then, the sun emerged from behind the clouds and transformed the cliff and its lighthouse into an ingot of gold.

Moments later, everything was doused and the elements mauled the point, sending me scurrying up the ladders to the control tower, a UFO-like saucer with an eerie red light. The tower seemed like the bridge of a ship with its logbooks and weather divining apparatuses. The duty keeper showed me the telemetry electronic system that monitors all of the Western Cape’s lighthouses, tracking ships and gathering meteorological data.

Drenched and shivering, I retreated to the keeper’s cottage. After a hot shower, I settled down to read about the demise of the Lusitania, a passenger liner that struck Bellows Rock just south of the point in 1911. It was this particular wreckage that prompted the construction of the lower tower at Cape Point.

Next morning, I drove up the peninsula to Slangkop Lighthouse in Kommetjie. Commissioned in 1919, it’s a spindly 33-metre white tower constructed from cast-iron segments.

As a child, I imagined the lighthouse keeper as an old gent with a beard and a pipe, wearing sea boots, a sailor’s cap and a thick woollen jersey.

I visited a building beside the tower that houses a small museum dedicated to lighthouses where I learnt that Slangkop is the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest lighthouse. Afterwards, I climbed Slangkop’s spiralling staircase, which narrows until it reaches the beautiful lantern. I stepped out onto the balcony and took in the sublime views of Kommetjie, Long Beach and Chapman’s Peak beyond.

My last stop was the Green Point Lighthouse. I drove onward until I spotted its trademark red-and-white diagonal stripes glowing in the soft, post-storm light.

Standing on the lawn in front of this attractive, Egyptianstyle tower with the Atlantic crashing below, I thought of the early days of navigation on these waters. As far back as 1656, Jan van Riebeeck established signal fires to warn ships of dangers in Table Bay, but it was not until 1824 that a solidly built lighthouse was erected at Green Point. Today, this little house of light is considered to be the home of all South Africa’s lighthouses – a fitting place to end my tour of the Cape Peninsula’s lonely lights.

W

hen winter ushers in spring, a road trip from Cape Town via the N2 through the Overberg towards the Garden Route and Hessequa district is a study in impressionism.

Vast stretches of canola fields line the tarred artery that snakes its way towards the seaside village that overlooks the point where the Breede River meets the Indian Ocean. The flowers flutter and dance in the breeze. A flock of blue cranes airlifts just beyond the yellow façade for good measure.

Blue cranes are tall birds, reaching up to 1.2m and it’s amazing to see the breeding pairs stalking along in the farmlands. The blue crane is my favourite bird, and a proteced species. The Overberg is one of three strongholds for the bird and they seem to be flourishing. I’m happy to learn that, besides our national bird, there are more than 260 bird species, the largest concentration of the endangered southern right whale and 3 000 hectares of undisturbed fynbos in the area.

We are welcomed by Hugo La Grange, the Project Manager of Breedezicht Estate. Launched about ten years ago, the estate has five styles of house to choose from, should you want to make this quaint seaside village your home.

With white sand dunes and unspoilt beaches, Witsand, the name of the town where the estate is located, is known as one of the last unexploited places on the South African coastline.

Once a port where steamboats loaded goods destined for the Cape Town market, it has plenty of interesting places to visit, from the famous Barry Memorial Church, built in 1849, to ruptured remains of ships and the well-preserved little harbour.

There are two sides to this town – Witsand and Port Beaufort.

Driving through the streets, Hugo shows us the main attractions.

The water is never more than a stone’s throw away in Witsand.

As Hugo speaks, it’s clear that the town is a fisherman’s retreat; he tells us that spotted grunter, steenbras, white and red stumpnose, leervis, red roman and cob, that can weigh as much as 50kg, are swimming in the waters.

I’m listening, but can’t wait get back to Koffie ’n Kletz, a shop with a sign advertising freshly-baked vetkoek with butter and jam.

And we must also go back to the restaurant that serves freshly caught fish. Plattelandse portions are my best.

My husband and I are reaching retirement age and we are charmed by this village that has no hints of city life. If you want to visit Infanta, a small town on the other side of the waterway, you have to take a boat. But you’ll have to wait for high tide so that the river is deep enough to cross. That’s how slow life is here.

We arrive at our Cape Heritage-style house in Breedezicht, unpack, start the fire, pour a glass of Merlot and settle in for the night. The kids wander off to see whether they can hire kayaks, but get scared when one of the locals jokingly tells them that there are small sharks in the river.

A crisp Saturday morning calls for some exploring. We find Instagram heaven when we enter the canola fields, and take some of the most amazing pictures.

Walking back to the car, I notice a few ostriches have assembled next to the fence where we parked. I approach cautiously to take some pictures, but as I near the fence something amazing happens.

The ostriches start walking towards us. More and more join the crowd until we’re standing in front of a sea of black and grey. They gaze at us. When we sway, they sway, following us with their oversized eyes.

We get into the car and as we start pulling away, they follow us like a swarm of bees until they are stopped by a fence.

Goosebumps.

The best of the weekend is our cruise up the river on a boat named the Fugly Cat. It’s slightly overcast. The skipper in a checked shirt and blue crocs is a fountain of knowledge about the waterway. I assume that the water would be drinkable, because it’s a river and he invites me to a sip, but it’s saltier than the Dead Sea! We sail for four hours, in awe of the beauty of South Africa. As we float along, we see little houses with small jetties at scattered intervals, spotting the odd hiker walking the banks of the Breede among the wild vegetation.

And just when I think this impressionist moment couldn’t get any better, I hear the call of a fish eagle. We spot it, perched high up on a tree top, scanning the landscape.

Homeward bound, and we help to pull the car across the river on a pont before we make a stop off at Malgas for some tea and scones. The only question lingering in my mind is “where is Monet for moments like this?”

If you want to visit Infanta, you have to take a boat, but you’ll have to wait for high tide so that the river is deep enough to cross. That’s how slow life is here.

ith an enthusiasm for ancient bread-making traditions Madame Baker Ciska Rossouw is set on changing the world one sourdough loaf at a time.

“I believe in slow dough. That flour, natural yeast and salt can be transformed into something so life affirming is nothing short of a miracle. It’s truly alchemy in action.”

Bakeries are transformative places. Walking into Loaves on Long, you’re reminded of what real bread smells like. “The heady toasty smell is the first thing people comment on when they walk through the door,” says Rickma Coxon, co-owner of this bustling bakery/eatery.

The team shares a fascination with wild things, which is evident from the beautifully scored sourdough loaves, the ciabatta with their charmingly

imperfect slipper shapes and the fermented products such as the house-made kimchi, teafermented kombucha, and kefir that appear on their menu.

The real-bread renaissance has revived interest in natural processes, according to Ciska.

“It couldn’t have come soon enough. Bread has become a shadow of its former self.

“The quality of bread has been on a downward slope since the industrial revolution.

Commercial yeast and baking soda were developed in the mid-1800s to feed the booming population. It was all about finding ways for bread to rise faster, but the more rapidly it rose, the less flavour it had.”

Time is an essential ingredient in real bread. Much of the magic happens during the long rise. The yeast feasts on the sugar in the

carbohydrates, creating the lactic and acetic acid that give sourdough its distinctive tang.

The fermentation process also captures a myriad of chemical components that are set free by the rising steam as the bread bakes.

Using wild ferment as a raising agent, rather than the standard commercial yeasts, takes us back to ancient methods, marking the return of real bread.

“I use a starter dough, which I’ve been nurturing for the past seven years,” says Ciska, as she gives her starter its daily feed of flour and water. “I look after it like a child.” Her commitment pays off handsomely; the starter produces bread that’s as real as it is heavenly.

The distinctive, pleasantly sour twang is the result of the acids produced during

fermentation. The alchemic process of these acids continues even after the bread has been baked. It stays fresh for longer and gets even tastier as it matures. “Compare this with factory-produced bread, which is kept alive artificially with additives I can’t event pronounce,” says the baker.

Ciska tells me that creating real bread starts in the wheat field. “We know exactly where our flour comes from, who the farmer is and the farming practices followed. The flours we use are grown by Heinie Fourie, a fifth generation wheat farmer from Caledon who embraces ancient farming and milling practices.”

The Bio-Wheat flour is stoneground at low temperatures to protect the grain, leaving the wheat germ, nutrients and fibre intact. Nothing added, nothing

taken away. This allows the natural flavours and aromas of the grain to develop right through from milling and fermenting to baking.

Even gluten-sensitive people find that they can enjoy proper sourdough bread without unpleasant side effects. The key is the type of flour used, the fermentation process that makes the bread more digestible and the absence of the long list of additives typical of commercially produced bread.

Made with nothing more than natural ingredients and a little bit of love, the breads from Loaves on Long are nothing short of sublime.

When it comes to the real food revolution, Ciska and her band of bakers are really breaking new ground.

Artisanal bread: the term artisan has its roots in the Italian artigiano, coined in the 16th century to describe craftsman who were highly skilled in carving and the use of handtools. As with the terms ‘authentic’ or ‘handmade’, artisan is now a marketing buzz word, which is why Ciska prefers the term ‘real bread’.

Starter: a simple mixture of flour and water with activated wild yeasts

From the colour and aromas to flavours on the palate, mouthfeel and aftertaste, real bread will tantalise your taste buds. Here’s what the team at Loaves on Long has to say about their signature loaves.

Ciabatta: Toasted almond and sweet notes on the nose with a rich and creamy oat flavour.

Sourdough: Aromas of roasted coffee beans and molasses. Robust

and natural bacterial spores. Over time, and with regular feedings of more flour and water, the microflora in the starter dough become strong enough to make the bread rise.

A starter dough can also be called a mother dough.

Sweet sourdough: A South African style of sourdough made with fermented potatoes. Called soetsuurdeegbrood in Afrikaans.

THE BEST VIEW IN THE CITY One of Johannesburg’s finest hotels has two new culinary offerings on their menu and Chef Farrel Hirsch is the man at the helm.

he is the grand dame stretched out on the hills overlooking the north of Johannesburg. Four Seasons The Westcliff rests on the Witwatersrand of the City of Gold – the same gold-rich hills that sparked the gold rush in 1886 – and with its pink walls and cascading gardens, it is an institution in the city. Its lofty terraces are the perfect viewing point over all of sprawling Joburg.

Settle in for a meal, high tea or sundowner, keeping an eye on the elephants in their enclosure at Johannesburg Zoo across the road. As you look out on more than 80 kilometres of lush greenery softening this otherwise harsh cityscape, it’s easy to feel suspended between two worlds at The Westcliff.

Thirty-year-old Durban-born Farrel moved to the United Kingdom at age 13.

It was there that his passion for cooking was truly unlocked. After studying cookery in Nottingham, he was named runner-up for the city’s Young Chef of the Year competition in 2008, and later returned to South Africa where he joined The Oyster Box Hotel’s Grill Room Restaurant in his home town.

He has since worked for the Singita luxury lodges group and followed that with prestigious placements in the kitchens of top South African chefs Peter Tempelhoff (Greenhouse Restaurant) and Luke DaleRoberts (The Test Kitchen). Now, Farrel takes the reins of his own kitchen, bringing his mix of passion, daring attitude and experience to Johannesburg.

Farrel loves to travel, experience different cultures and meet new people.

It’s these international influences that meet his South African roots on the plates of Pre View and View. “To step out of my comfort zone is one of the greatest feelings in life.

I’m always excited by the idea of the unknown. Nothing beats going to a foreign country where no one speaks English and pointing at the dish being eaten at the table next to you, and ordering that. Not to taste is not to know.”

And he has used this knowledge to create his latest offerings at both restaurants, like the Seaweed Oysters at Pre View, braaied oysters crumbed with nori and wakami that leave you with the same fresh-off-the-coals smoky flavours as a delicious West Coast fish braai. Or his Cauliflower Bitterballen served with romesco (a Spanish nut and red pepper-based sauce), sultanas, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower leaves. hen you land in a sanitised airport environment, with its marble facades and DuPont carpet tiles, the first illusory seed about a country’s image is planted. And when you whizz along the city’s highways in your luxury conveyance toward your holiday destination, it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the shanty town beyond the highway’s boundary walls.

But stations and railway environments are different. Railways pass through the heart of cities and suburbs, so you get to see how ordinary people live.

This came to me when I travelled from Cape Town to Johannesburg on a train for

the first time in 42 years. As boarding school kids with a mother in Joburg, my brother and I travelled on the Trans Karoo Express about 24 times together.

With a second-hand car to collect in Pretoria, I decided to try out the fancier version of this old train, the Premier Classe, which slips out of Cape Town on Tuesdays and returns from Johannesburg on Thursdays.

“G’day mate, my name’s Rob and this is my brother, Wayne,” said the more than obviously Australian man seated next to me in the lounge car where we were drinking ‘champagne’ and eating finger food shortly after our departure.

Explaining to them that the level of wood panelled luxury, plush carpets and canapes was a far cry from the old Trans Karoo I’d known in my youth, they told me this was the first time they’d travelled on a sleeper train and, at the price, they hadn’t expected it to be so smart.

As much as I enjoyed meeting some of my fellow passengers and sharing our compressed life stories, I was looking forward to getting back to my cosy coupé and staring out the window at the scenery passing by.

TRAVEL SOUTH AFRICA and the spiky horizon of mountain peaks as we moved out of the city limits into the Boland. Cocooned in this blissful idyll, I wished it was a far longer journey that just 25 to 28 hours – “depending on the traffic into Johannesburg” we’d been told earlier.

Apart from meeting new people and witnessing some beautiful scenery, one of the best parts of rail travel is being able to have some guilt-free ‘me time’.

A few days before I boarded the train, I decided to scan a host of TripAdvisor comments on the Premiere Classe experience and felt a sense of trepidation after reading some of the bad ones. But, I’ve come to take these ‘reviews’ with a pinch of salt and also comforted myself with the fact that over 60% of the reviews had rated the overall experience as “Excellent” or “Very good”.

Sitting opposite my lunch partner – a ninety-something-year-old man who catches the train regularly – in the dining car later, we chatted about the old days of train travel in South Africa. While I fondly recalled changing from electric to diesel locomotives in Beaufort West, and then from diesel to steam in De Aar in the early 1970s, he remembered a lot further back than me. He talked animatedly about a time when the line rambled over many precipitous passes with far fewer tunnels, and when the whole journey was facilitated by steam traction, which meant you always had to be careful looking out the window for fear of getting coal grit in your eyes.

Back in my air-conditioned coupé, I flopped onto my comfortable couch and got into a rather wacky Thomas Pynchon novel I’d bought online a day or two before.

What’s so obviously different since I’d last travelled on this train is the fact that, with cellphones, you’re no longer out of reach.

Although a mixed blessing – for most of the journey I was able to keep in touch with the mechanics servicing the second-hand car I was to collect, make friends jealous with tantalising WhatsApp photos and keep up with the news – it did feel as though some of the charm had been lost.

The Aussies were in fine spirits in the bar that night. Before coming out to South Africa on safari, former school drama teacher, Robert Motton, and his equally

flamboyant brother, Wayne, had ‘safari suits’ made. It was these delightful shortpants-and-long-sock-khaki outfits, with faux tiger skin edging, in which they were dressed for dinner.

Although, as a boarding school kid, I used to eat my train meals with great gusto, the menus seldom varied, and more often than not, our dinner, served by stiffly starched waiters, was: thick pea soup (so glutinous it couldn’t slosh about); fried fish with rémoulade; braised steak (often tough, but palatable) with seasonal vegetables; and cabinet pudding – a very solid, malvatype dessert.

A group of us gathered in the lounge car after dinner and I soon found some fellow journalists who were more than happy to help me finish the bottle of wine I’d bought to partner my dinner.

When the Aussie contingent joined us a short while later, they immediately burst into song. And their apt rendition of one of our more successful choral exports, Shosoloza, was really not bad. This went on for a good hour or so before ‘Livingstone’, ‘Stanley’ and their respective retinues turned in for the night.

I woke up the next morning with a bang.

There was a fair bit of a commotion coming from my Melbourne mates in the corridor

outside my coupé and I decided to stick my head out to see what was going on.

Apparently we had hit a car which had inexplicably stalled on a level crossing.

Luckily the driver escaped unharmed and the earlier rumours of ‘many hours delay’ in the shack lands outside Orkney didn’t transpire, and we were off before breakfast was over.

Heading back to my sofa, I was more than a little disappointed that the train journey was coming to an end. I still had so much thinking and meditating to do in the comfort of my home-from-home on wheels.

If I hadn’t had a car to pick up, I would have happily stayed and ridden back to Cape Town the very next day.

Plastics for South Africa

Focusing on building preschools in underprivileged communities, the eco-architect went in search of an opportunity to build a centre that would not only benefit the community, but also unite its members. Ian came across the Penguins Preschool in the Walmer township in Port Elizabeth.

“It was a shack,” he says, “and in such bad condition. Bloemies, the lady managing it, was immediately on board when I approached her and was pivotal to the success of the project.” Ian and a few volunteers set off to encourage the community to get involved while a few engineers began testing methods of building with the bricks.

“We knew we needed about 6 000 EcoBricks, so we had to get as many people as possible involved,” he says. The team set up several exchange initiatives to encourage community members to get involved, swapping waste for everything from clothing to tea and coffee. The collection was such a success that they eventually ran out of storage space for the bricks; Ian reminisces about how proud the community was to be part of renovating the preschool.

Innovation is often born out of necessity. And for Ian Dommisse, architect and founder of the EcoBrick Exchange, the need to reduce the amount of plastic waste floating around the world and create safe spaces in underprivileged communities have inspired true innovation.

CONSTRUCTING INSPIRATION

Ian Dommisse is an architect with a deep love of nature and a passion for protecting the environment. In his high-school years, Ian took part in Habitat for Humanity builds and was inspired by the organisation’s model, which allowed volunteers to have fun while uplifting communities.

After completing his studies in architecture, Ian went on a search for another worthy cause to support. Becoming more and more aware of the litter and plastic waste crisis plaguing South Africa, he knew that this was where he should focus his attention.

The idea for EcoBrick Exchange struck him during a visit to Greyton in the Western Cape. Nicola Vernon, an activist and chairperson of the Greyton Transition Town initiative, a grassroots community project that aims to increase self-sufficiency to reduce 74

the effects of climate change and economic instability, was using the EcoBrick concept on a small scale to build green spaces in the Overberg town.

“I immediately started asking questions; the most pressing was why EcoBricks weren’t being using as building materials across South Africa,” says Ian. The answer was simply “red tape”. From there on, Ian focused his energy on figuring out how to beat the bureaucracy to bring EcoBricks to communities in need. “For me, the future of architecture is inspired by buildings that not only serve the people who use them, but are also built using materials that would otherwise harm the environment.”

Soon after his visit to Greyton, Ian began the long journey to establishing a non-profit company. With the support of the firm of one of his architecture lecturers, his dream was turned into a reality in little more than a year.

BUILDING BLOCKS

EcoBricks are polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles packed with non-biological waste (AKA plastic). With enough stuffing, the bottles are turned into reusable, sturdy bricks that are great insulators, bulletproof and, if set in plaster, fireproof. Literally anyone can create an EcoBrick as no machinery or special skills are necessary.

In fact, that was part of Ian’s plan. “The EcoBrick Exchange is a bottom-up development, which means that the idea is to train people and give them the skills to create awesome projects and designs. We’re going to offer free online courses to help educate and inspire people to come up with ideas, which is far more empowering than just telling someone what to do,” says the architect. www.flymango.com | November 2017

TRAVEL ECOBRICK There are a variety of ways to use the bricks and a plethora of things to build – it’s not all about classrooms. The original EcoBrick conceptualiser, Susana Heisse, saw the bottles as a way to generate a worldwide solution for decreasing plastic waste while increasing green spaces, schools and safe spaces in underdeveloped countries.

That’s why all EcoBrick information, designs, instructions and methods are available online.

The vision for EcoBrick in South Africa is to clean up the country, ridding it of waste that takes around 450 years to break down. “Right now, South Africa needs to start managing plastic waste better,” says Ian. “We are the 11th-worst plastic manager in the world, with only 11% of the country recycling.”

Although EcoBricks aren’t feasible for use on a large scale – and Ian points out that we wouldn’t want to start encouraging plastic use to generate the bricks for this purpose – they can still have a massive impact in South Africa. Not only will they help to reduce the amount of plastic waste going into landfills and the ocean, but they’ll also lead to the development of green spaces and buildings that have a positive effect in the communities that need it the most.

After winning TLC Entertainment’s 2016 next great presenter search and hosting TLC’s Most Extreme, radio and television presenter Carissa Cupido is laying firm foundations for a career in broadcasting.

R

adio is her first love, but Carissa Cupido has found a new home on screen as TLC Entertainment’s freshest face.

With six years behind the mic under her belt, her radio career became the springboard that launched her into the world of television. And while she is an undeniable talent on air, 25-year-old Carissa is looking forward to exploring the other avenues that the entertainment industry has to offer.

“I have been delving into script writing and voice-over work, which is a new avenue, but one that I am thoroughly enjoying. I am also hoping to venture into producing in both radio and TV. I understand that media has the power to shape minds and people’s worlds, and I want to be part of that process of creating content with representation and empowerment.”

Her drive and passion for what she does saw her pack up her life in Cape Town to lay new roots in Johannesburg earlier this year, an experience that has both opened new doors and made her appreciate her past. “I grew up in Strandfontein in Cape Town, a place I never appreciated, but am now realising has informed my identity.

“Taking a leap of faith and moving to the City of Gold was a huge lesson in trusting myself and my work. I felt like there was more for me than what Cape Town was offering and I knew more varied opportunities were waiting for me in Joburg.”

After only a few months, Carissa has tapped into the get-things-done pulse of her new home. “I can already pick up the difference in mentality. A lot of people are driven by the pursuit of passion and money, and I think that’s important because

it teaches you to attach value to your product. It’s one thing to be a dreamer, but in Joburg there are a lot of doers. I’ve found it to be incredibly refreshing.”

Carissa’s most recent adventure took her to London, where she filmed This Is Life With Carissa, TLC’s newest four-part series. “The show is about life-changing moments that have happened to people, captured live. It’s incredibly vulnerable and engaging, and will leave you at the edge of your seat. From a comingout story to a story of extreme forgiveness, there’s something for everyone. It’s beautiful,” she says.

With a passion for people, Carissa says that the shooting process could be emotionally draining at times.

Her biggest hope is that audiences relate to the experiences captured on camera. “I don’t consider myself a talking head; I put myself in these

stories. I hope audiences will too,” says the personality.

A storyteller at heart, the broadcaster has always wanted to build a career in media, but it was in her teens that radio caught her attention. “I fell in love with radio at about 17 after spending nights listening to Nicole Fox on 5FM. I realised the power media holds to create entire worlds of possibility for people; I wanted to be part of that. I haven’t looked back since.”

And she hasn’t needed to, because, according to Carissa, she’s planned for it all. “I’ve dreamed of all of this for years now and have pored over vision boards for hours, curating my future. It’s the craziest thing when you see it all manifest.

It’s been incredibly reaffirming.”

She has been privileged to share this affirmation with other young women. “I have received messages from young girls that tell me how I’ve helped them to trust themselves and their dreams. I’m not doing this only for self-fulfilment but also for the benefit of those who will follow after me.”

But it hasn’t all been an easy ride.

In an industry that is often beset with people serving their own

interests, the TV personality has faced constant challenges.

“I honestly think that if we all had the goal of raising the standard of the industry in South Africa by extending a helping hand to one another, we would be advancing at an exponential pace.”

In this environment, learning to trust herself and her work, despite how tough it can be to do so at times, has been a learning exercise.

“Dispelling constant self-doubt is not an easy task. But to trust is to have full faith in your ability, character and strength, and I’m learning to do that more every day”.

“The exciting thing about following your own path is that there is no blue print to success; you create your own way to the top,” Carissa says. She is now the voice of TLC Entertainment and is looking forward to hosting more shows for the channel in the future, with her next project set to take place early in 2018 alongside seasoned radio and television presenter Thando Thabethe. “The show is called Thando Bears All and I will be co-hosting. I am so proud of her success, too, and am honoured to work alongside her.” www.flymango.com | November 2017

A self-taught star on the rise

peaking with 24-year-old Yamkela Mdaka is a masterclass in living out your passions. The journalist and self-taught musician has recently released his debut single – the pinnacle of almost 10 years of mastering his craft.

“For a very long time, I actually didn’t know that I was musically inclined,” says Yamkela, who goes by the stage name Alek Blak.

“I only discovered my gift at about 15 years old, which was also around the time that I started teaching myself how to play the acoustic guitar and started writing songs.”

While he says his love of music began when he was a child, it wasn’t something he had considered pursuing as a career.

“I wanted to be many other things. From an architect, to an interior designer and a journalist,” he says. It was option three that became his focus.

Butterworth-born and Pretoria-raised, Yamkela went on to study journalism at Rhodes University, but unfortunately could not complete his degree. “After it was confirmed that I couldn’t go back to school, I started an internship with Ndalo Media and worked my way up in the company. I’m now a journalist for Destiny Man magazine.”

Now based in Johannesburg, Yamkela counts himself lucky to be able to cultivate careers in two fields he is passionate about.

“I’ve always believed that if someone has more than one passion, there’s no reason not to try at least to pursue them both. For now, my journalism career is what is dominating, and my music career is only starting to pick up. I use almost every second where I’m not at work to work on my music, and this is how I’ve been balancing the two.”

There’s no doubt in Yamkela’s mind that music is what he is meant to be doing. His first adventure on the stage was doing community theatre at the State Theatre in Pretoria. But his passion for music outshone his love for acting and, with the guidance of theatre directors Ayanda Sithebe and Tshepo Ratona, Yamkela honed his songwriting skills to produce and perform in a one-man musical at the age of 17. “That was when I knew I wanted to be a professional musician,” he says.

His journey over the past eight years has steadily led him to his career highlight thus far: the release of his debut single, ‘A New Day’, in June 2017. Yamkela says his music has always been a way for him to process his feelings and this song was one of those powerful moments.

A man of many talents, Yamkela Mdaka (AKA Alek Blak) is pursuing them all and carving out a unique space for himself in the industries he loves.

FAVOURITE SOUTH AFRICAN DESTINATION? It will always be the Eastern Cape. I sometimes feel that it’s one of the most underrated provinces in our country. Its beauty is just unbelievable and more people need to experience it.

“I wrote it a few years ago when I was going through something that consumed me entirely. I woke up one day and realised that I can’t live with this negative energy constantly clogging my mind,” he says. “So that morning, I grabbed my guitar and started singing and recording myself on the voice recorder on my phone. In that five-minute recording, I managed to free myself from holding onto something that lived in my past.” He knew then that he had written his debut song and was looking forward to sharing it.

“I think my music is an extension of my open-book personality.

I enjoy being able to share stories, pain and happiness in song.

The idea of being in a room with someone I don’t know, and will probably never know, and being able to engage them through my music is really quite special.”

Despite his anxiety about its release, Yamkela has been blown away by the response to the song so far. “It exceeded every expectation I had. I had been working towards my music dream for so many years and when I could finally put out a product, I made sure to treat it with the importance the journey deserved.

The fact that I had followed through with something I had told myself I would do as a teenager was just amazing.”

While the road he has travelled has brought Yamkela this far, he has no plans of stopping any time soon. “I will be following up the single with an EP that will be out before the end of this year,” he says, ready for wherever it might take him. “I want to take my music to the world. I think it’s a sound that resonates with audiences across the globe and that’s where I plan to leave my footprint.” www.flymango.com | November 2017

Inspired by her love for the sea, her favourite holiday destination is Greece.

What she loves most about Cape Town is that there is so much to do in a 200km radius, from Tankwa Karoo to the Winelands and the coast.

Her favourite homemade meal is stuffed chicken with pesto and feta, rolled up in bacon.

To unwind, she spends time with family and friends, particularly enjoying a Friday night braai on the stoep.

Jeanne is an adrenaline junkie and rides her mountain bike as often as possible.

Meet the woman behind Elgin Free Range Chickens, the largest independent free-range chicken company in South Africa.

From producing 100 chickens every eight weeks to 100 000 every week, Elgin has gone from strength to strength in the hands of founder Jeanne Groenewald.

orn and raised on a farm in Wellington, farming is without a doubt in Jeanne’s blood. “I loved being out on the farm and helping my dad.

It definitely stood me in good stead for starting my own free range chicken business,” she says.

Inspired by her father’s duck business, where she spent some time working, she began farming chickens for personal consumption. “When I left the duck business I moved to the Overberg and began farming with 100 chickens in my backyard for my own consumption. Friends and family tasted my free range, drug-free birds and ordered from me for the next time I did a batch,” she explains. That was 20 years ago, and the business has grown at an impressive pace ever since.

Today, Elgin employs over 600 people and supplies free-range chickens to food retailer Woolworths. “I had grown my business for one of the other major retailers in South Africa who eneded up letting me down with the volume uptake they had committed to. I made a call to Woolworths and asked if they were

looking for free range chickens. We were packing for them within three weeks.”

With a constant need to grow and improve, the future of Elgin is a promising one, and the company is determinded to expand into the global market. “We’ve sent a shipment to Doha, but due to the current avian influenza status in our country, another shipment isn’t possible. We will, however, keep our export licence up to date and will revisit once we have the ban on exports lifted,” she says.

Although she has not applied much of her BSc agriculture in animal psychology and genetics to her farming, it has helped her understand business operations better.

“Farming is a science and having a BSc definitely assists in understanding a lot of the science behind it, understanding the diseases that are potentially threatening and the treatments thereof.”

Jeanne says one of the contributing factors to her company’s success is delegation. “Once I mastered the art of delegation, my business really started to grow as I had more time to spend on strategising. The other lesson I’ve learnt

is that you need to lead from behind.

Empower the people you put in positions and guide them from behind, don’t lead from the front,” she explains.

When asked about her favourite childhood memory, Jeanne says it was definitely the freedom she and her siblings had growing up on a farm. “We had horses and used to ride to neighbours for the afternoon and then ride back. We would spend weekends sleeping in the stables with horses, it was safe and innocent fun.

No cellphones, TV or internet.”

The mother of two says it’s difficult to achieve a work and homelife balance for entrepreneurs. “I spent many hours working in the middle of the night to be able to take quality time out during the day while the kids were awake. This becomes unsustainable and you do reach burnout.

I think every working mom lives with a huge feeling of guilt when it comes to time with her children,” she adds.

With a product that has become synonymous with quality and great service, it’s safe to say that Elgin is destined for success in Jeanne’s hands.

Questions for your pilot

The undercarriage (or landing gear) supports an aircraft on the ground and allows it to taxi, take off and land. Mango’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft have six wheels – two on the front landing gear and two on each of the two main landing gear units, which are attached underneath the wings.

Each main landing gear mechanism consists of a large shock strut, a side strut, two wheels and landing gear doors.

The shock strut is the main support that connects the wheels to the aircraft’s body. It has suspension to soften the ride on the ground and absorb the impact during landing.

Wheel brakes are fitted to each main gear wheel and are controlled by the pilots’ foot pedals and by an auto-brake system. Like most modern cars, large aircraft are equipped with an anti-skid braking system, which improves grip and prolongs the life of the tyres. Nose wheels are not fitted with wheel brakes, but can be steered by the pilots to turn the aircraft during taxiing.

The pilots use a lever in the cockpit to retract the gear after takeoff and extend it before landing. Hydraulic pumps provide the pressure required to raise and lower the heavy gear mechanisms. The landing gear creates a large amount of drag during flight, so it is retracted almost immediately after takeoff. The main landing gear tucks away neatly into a compartment, called a wheel well, in the aircraft’s belly and gear doors partially cover the opening. The main wheels are not covered by gear doors, but the outer walls of the tyres meet with aerodynamic seals in the wheel well to make a smooth surface along the underside of the aircraft. The nose wheel is tucked away neatly and covered by two barntype doors.

A few minutes before landing, the pilots extend the landing gear. Passengers might feel a slight bump underneath the belly of the aircraft as the hydraulic components activate. Airflow striking the extended gear raises the noise levels in the cabin and increases drag, helping the aircraft to slow down or descend faster.

Aircraft tyres are tubeless and are inflated with nitrogen, which is more resistant to temperature changes than air.

This increases the life of the tyres and reduces pressure changes. Nitrogen does not leak as easily as air, nor does it hold moisture that might freeze under cold conditions like those at high altitude. The maximum speed rating of the Boeing 737’s tyres is 195 knots (361km/h), but tyres rarely exceed 165 knots during takeoff and landing. The diameter of the 737-800’s tyre is 1.1 metres – that’s double the diameter of a tyre of a large luxury car. Nose wheels are paired; if one tyre needs to be replaced, both wheels are changed. This reduces vibration and further ensures safety.

Landing gear mechanisms are incredibly strong and are designed to withstand forces around three times the weight of the aircraft. During design and development, landing gear structures and wheels are tested to extreme forces that will never be experienced on routine flights.

EVOLVING THE WAY WE FLY Millennials have taken flight and are pioneering their own path to enrich their lives through travel. To find out more about these young flyers, we caught up with Pumla Luhabe, General Manager: Commercial at Mango Airlines, to find out how Mango and other airlines are catering to fulfil millennials’ specific needs.

Aged between 18 and 34, millennials are a large group, which makes it very important for organisations, including airlines, to cater for their needs.

According to a report by Nielsen titled ‘Young and ready to travel’, Millennials are travelling more often than their predecessors. While previous generations travelled primarily for work and special occasions, millennials travel to enrich their lives with personal experiences.

The report indicates that the global travel retail market is worth $63.5 billion (approximately R837 billion), with millennials making up 50% of that spend. In a USA survey by Hipmunk, an online travel company, a pool of more than 8 500 people in 24 countries were polled, with some interesting findings:

South Africa celebrated Tourism Month in September. According to STATS SA, the number of visitors from foreign shores had increased by 12.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2017.

This is encouraging statistic followed hot on the heels of a PWC survey that reported the travel and tourism sector is expected to contribute 9.4% to GDP next year.

All this positive growth highlights the importance of the travel and aviation sector to our country. At Mango, our goal is to keep airfares affordable so that more South Africans can travel to all corners of our beautiful country more often.

In terms of growth, Mango is proud to have reported a 1% yearon-year increase in ‘load factor’ for the period 2016/2017. This means that we managed to carry more Guests per flight than the year before. Passenger load factor is an important measurement tool for the performance of any airline when it comes to operational efficiency – something on which Mango places a high value.

Investor Warren Buffett said, “High load factors mean a fair amount of discomfort.” But that is definitely not the case when flying Mango. Since the roll-out of our new and ergonomically efficient seating, our Guests agree that Mango offers more legroom than our competitors.

On the fleet of new generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft, the new seat rollout means a saving of approximately 820kg in aircraft weight! This results in a decrease of 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Mango has already reduced fleet weight by 270kg on each of our aircraft, with overall weight savings amounting to 1 090kg each. Now that’s something to shout out about.

Over the years, Mango has perfected a customer experience, from tongue-in-cheek humour to excellent Guest service, that leaves our favourite flyers satisfied and ready for their journey.

With the dawn of the digital age, millennials feel part of a global tribe, connected via social media. Recently, Forbes stated that millennials would trust their online contemporaries over traditional travel advertising when choosing their next travel destination. This is why it is essential that airlines partner with social media influencers to help them gain traction in the millennial market.

On the local front, Mango has hosted innovative experiences on our flights to better relate to our younger and trendy customers.

For example, in 2012 we had local band Mi Casa perform on one of our flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town. More recently,

Mango took part in the viral Running Man Challenge, which saw Mango Team Members do variations of the popular Running Man dance to ’90s hit song ‘My Boo’.

Something else the millennial generation seems to be getting right, is caring about the greater good. More youngsters are recycling, are becoming vegetarians, are concerned about the state of the oceans and are troubled by global warming. They are the generation who cares about causes. As Mango is one of the first airlines in Africa to use biofuel, we will tick a box with this younger cause-caring community of flyers.

Millennials are also extremely technologically savvy and they expect their service providers to be equally fluent in all things digital. We have pioneered the domestic aviation industry across several technological touch points, from being the first to develop a mobile app for booking and payment, to being the only carrier globally to accept store charge cards such as Edgars and Jet cards as a method of payment.

Mango is also the first airline in Africa to retail through supermarkets, with our partnerships with Pick n Pay, Edgars, Checkers and various other notable brands. We remain the only airline to transact on flights using the Edcon Thank You card as a form of payment. This greatly increases the ease in which millennials can plan their next trip to our eight destinations in South Africa and Zanzibar.

We also talk the millennial language on our FlyMangoSA Facebook page that has nearly 1.1 million followers and a 96% response rate. Our Twitter account has close to 280 000 followers, and our Instagram account, @flymangosa, has more than 6 500 followers.

Although we consider ourselves to be a quirky and fun airline, we take operational efficiency seriously.

Nothing shouts louder than being a multi-award winning airline.

Appealing to the millennials would be our Sunday Times Generation Next Survey, where Mango has been voted the Coolest Low Cost Airline several times.

There is no doubt that travel patterns will change from one generation to the next. At Mango, we want to change with the trends.

11 years, 50 awards and still flying high

On 15 November 2006, Mango first took to South African skies, in what has now become our country’s trademark orange aircraft. Besides bringing families, friends and businesspeople together, we have taken off in many other memorable ways over the past 11 years.

After starting by connecting only Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, we gradually added Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Lanseria, Zanzibar and George to our flight schedules. Today, we have flown more than 20 million Guests on an average of 1 700 flights a month, getting them to their destinations safely and happily.

We have also been privileged to celebrate various milestones and win various accolades along the way.

Our 2007 launch campaign won us the International Budgie Award for the best advertising campaign at the World Low Cost Airline Conference in London, beating well-known low-cost airlines, including easyJet, Virgin Blue and jetBlue. The theme, ‘I believe I can fly’, still resonates today and supports our mission of making air travel affordable for everyone.

In 2008, we scooped the African Low-cost Carrier prize at the World Airlines Awards, giving us our very first taste of international recognition. The award set us on a path to reach greater heights, to provide our Guests with even better service and more success.

By 2009, Mango had carried more than 3.5 million South Africans – the fastest rate of passenger growth in South African aviation history.

The Sunday Times named us as the Highest Ranking Low-cost Carrier in South Africa in their Top Brands and Generation Next awards in 2001, 2014, 2015 and 2017. In addition to this, we took home the top prize at the Skytrax World Airline Award for Best African Low-cost Carrier in 2013 and 2015. It’s safe to say that 2015 was a good year. We were named the Best African Low-cost Carrier at the World Airline Awards and nominated as Africa’s Leading Economy Airline. In 2017, we were nominated as Africa’s Leading Low-cost Carrier.

As an integral part of the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), our ‘big brother’ in the aviation industry, we have been recognised as a top ground infrastructure provider, winning multiple awards.

Winning three Feather Awards for our operations at Bloemfontein, two each for Cape Town International, OR Tambo and Durban, as well as one at Port Elizabeth, we’ve shown that the Mango team has airport handling under control.

Some of our prouder moments in tourism have been the awards from TripAdvisor. In 2017, we were named as the Travellers Choice: The Best Low-Cost Airline: Middle East and Africa, and were the only African carrier listed in the Top 5 World on-time

arrivals list. Our on-time record has been consistently high over the years, making this a major differentiator between us and other local low-cost airlines.

As a proudly South African airline, we have to thank our Afrikaans Guests, who collectively voted us to first place as the Platinum winner in the category Lugredery in the Beeld Koerant Readers Awards in 2017. Dankie, julle almal, ons waardeer dit baie.

Finally, if you are enjoying this issue of Juice magazine, you will see the value in great publishing.

Alongside our partners in print, we tied for the 2013 Publisher’s Awards for design. We also won the Best Publication Cover, followed by being a finalist for the Best External Magazine, and being a finalist for the Top Corporate Publication. Our creative journalists were also awarded a Certification for Excellence in writing. In 2014, Juice was a finalist for Best Achievement in Design, Best External Magazine, and yet another Certification for Excellence in Communication. So to all our Mango Guests, we really do take this job seriously when we say “sit back, relax, and enjoy the Juice.”

We’ve also played our part in social upliftment.

In 2015, Mango launched a company-wide internship programme for unemployed young adults aged 18 to 35. Eighty-seven individuals have participated in the programme to date, with 35 having found employment with Mango.

Our Mango Adult Basic Education and Training School is run in partnership with Triple EEE Learning.

It empowers learners by helping them to attain a SAQA-accredited certificate, which is the equivalent of a Matric certificate. There are currently eight individuals participating in the programme, working diligently towards achieving their education goals.

We truly believe that people are the backbone of the airline, and we are proud to train them further and enable them to further their careers as pilots and cabin crew with courses like the CAA-approved Safety and Emergency Procedures training that we provide.

This year, through a partnership with KimberlyClark and BidAir Services, we were able to come to the relief of those devastated by fires and floods that ravaged Port Elizabeth and Knysna.

Looking ahead to the next 11 years, we want to assure you that Mango will always strive to serve the communities in which we operate.
