Debating duo compete on world stage

Debating duo Megan-Fei Atkins and Theo Miller made history back in March when they became the first Sir John Deane's students to represented the college at the prestigious Oxford Schools debate competition.

The pair were up against a formidable array of teams from countries around the world including Canada, Kenya, China, South Korea and India.

Demonstrating their ability to think on their feet and engage with complex ideas with tenacity and insight, they covered topics such as nuclear energy, athletics and private education. As novices to the event, they demonstrated drive and determination to continually improve throughout the day making the state school finals and finishing 43rd overall, third amongst state schools and as the fourth ranked novice team.

Thank you to the Oxford Union team for hosting such a fantastic event and a special thank you to former Sir John Deane's and now Oxford student, Chili Cheung, who provided valuable mentoring throughout the competition.

Student's powerful talk takes prize in National Gallery competition

Fine Art student Ollie Fenner has achieved national recognition after securing third place in the National Gallery’s prestigious Articulate competition.

Ollie stood out among more than 1,600 entrants across the UK, impressing judges at the British Library finals with a moving and insightful presentation on a powerful work by artist David Wojnarowicz.

The competition, which involves students delivering a ten minute presentation on their thoughts and

understanding of a piece of artwork, is designed to develop vital oracy, research and presentation skills.

Simon Davies, Head of Art at Sir John Deane's said: "Ollie’s monologue was incredibly powerful and emotional. He captivated the audience and judges, amongst some very strong competition."

He was awarded £100 and becomes a member of the prestigious Articulate Alumni, with opportunities to deliver talks and lectures at various events and locations.

Industry careers fair

We were delighted to welcome over 40 exhibitors to our annual Industry Careers Fair back in March.

Students had the opportunity to speak to representatives from some of the UK's leading firms, based in the North west, including Airbus, AstraZeneca, Sellafield, Tata, UK Home Office, Unilever and Bentley to name just a few.

The college also welcomed back a number of Sir John Deane’s alumni, representing their organisations, who provided current students with a valuable insight into a whole range of industries and careers programmes, including degree and higher level apprenticeships, industrial placements, internships and graduate schemes.
