Geographers experience Iceland’s dramatic landscapes

Year 12 Geography students recently embarked on an unforgettable trip to Iceland, immersing themselves in the country’s extraordinary landscapes, geology, and culture.

Landing in Reykjavík, the group wasted no time, heading straight to the Reykjanes Peninsula. Highlights included crossing the bridge between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and taking in the area’s striking volcanic scenery.

The second day saw students touring Iceland’s famous Golden Circle. At the Hellisheiði geothermal power station, they learned about carbon capture technology and its role in combating climate change, before reconnecting with nature with geysers, waterfallls and Thingvellir national park.

Day three took the group to the Westmann Islands, with a ferry trip to Heimaey to see the site of the dramatic 1973 Eldfell volcanic eruption. A puffin-spotting excursion added a touch of wildlife to the day before ending at Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

The final day blended modern attractions and relaxation. After the FlyOver Iceland immersive ride, the group enjoyed the Sky Lagoon’s geothermal waters, experienced the volcanic Lava Show, and explored Reykjavík’s vibrant city centre.

The trip offered a unique blend of hands-on learning and adventure, leaving students inspired by Iceland’s natural wonders and environmental innovation.

Sir John Deane’s finished the term on a musical high with the return of the Sound of Summer courtyard concert.

The event featured and eclectic mix of pop and rock performances, including acts from the recent Battle of the Bands competition, talented soloists, and the college’s very own barbershop choir.

There was also a special one-off performance from the college staff band, with Sian Aryee on vocals, Robert Palin on drums, Tim Murphy on keyboard, and Jack Minchew on guitar.

including Guys and Dolls, Chicago and Top Hat. With energetic choreography, polished performances, and plenty of stage presence, the showcase gave students the opportunity to demonstrate both their technical skills and their passion for the arts.

‘Shine a Light’ exhibition celebrates Year 13 talent

The college's annual celebration of art and design returned to the college in June showcasing the incredible talents of Year 13 students.

The 'Shine a Light' exhibition opened the doors for parents and members of the public to view the final portfolio work of A level Fine Art, Textiles, Photography and 3D Design students.

Simon Davies, Head of Art

and Design at the college, said: “The exhibition is a chance to pause and appreciate the hard work of both students and staff. Students lead local litter pick

More than 40 students took part in a litter pick around the campus and nearby residential areas to mark the college's Environmental Week celebrations in June.

The initiative, organised by the college's Environmental Society, saw students working in small teams to collect as much rubbish as possible in a friendly competition. The event was designed not only to improve the local environment but

also to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability and community responsibility.

The clean-up, which has become an annual event in recent years, was one of several activities held during the college’s Environmental Week, aimed at educating students about eco-conscious living and promoting lasting habits that reduce waste and pollution.
