An exciting time to be in Sioux Falls
The orange cones on the streets and growing residential and commercial structures all across the city are evidence that we are a community on the move. Sioux Falls is on the verge of many amazing opportunities — we are a community striving to move from good to great.
The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is also part of the process in building Sioux Falls. Since 1958, our Community Appeals Committee has vetted capital campaigns. The purpose of the committee is to help organizations plan their fundraising for maximum benefits. The results are bricks and mortar that continue to benefit the community long after their construction.
Two recent campaigns epitomize the return on investment our community receives through community appeals projects. The Ice Sports Association campaign, which will break ground next year on the three-sheet Scheel’s Iceplex, ran from November last year until March of this year. The Community Indoor Tennis Center

campaign runs April through July; this center will house seven indoor tennis courts. Both facilities will be located at the Sanford Sports Complex, a growing development in the northwest part of Sioux Falls. Both facilities will help bring new activities and events to the community that we didn’t have the ability to host before. They also allow people who live in the area more opportunities to participate in healthy activities.
The new facilities at the Sanford Sports Complex are just some of the great building projects that are providing jobs, improving neighborhoods and adding to our quality of life. This issue of Chamber News highlights just a few of the benefits from the construction activity taking place across the city.
But moving from good to great is more than just making sure we have solid infrastructure and shiny new buildings. Becoming a great community is an opportunity to dream big about what we might be capable of, the events we can host and economic development opportunities we can pursue — because we have a strong infrastructure and top-notch facilities that are second-tonone. It takes vision to look down the road and see the payoffs from we’re building today. Today we’re reaping the success of those who came before us.
There is a growing momentum in Sioux Falls to be proud of our community and to present a great first impression to our visitors and perhaps future residents. Thanks to partnerships between the public and private

sectors, we have a great city to sell. It’s an exciting time to be in Sioux Falls and we will have an even more exciting future once these facilities are completed. Congratulations to the all of the campaign volunteers and public and private leaders who saw the need for the projects. Congratulations to everyone who has supported these campaigns. And congratulations to all of us in the Sioux Falls area, who will truly benefit from the investment.

CVB attends sports event symposium
Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau Sales Manager Blaine Davis, along with Wesley Hall, executive director of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, attended the 21st Annual NASC Event Symposium April 22-25, 2013 in Louisville, Ky. The NASC Sports Event Symposium is a reverse, appointment-based tradeshow designed by and for the sports travel industry. In addition to the appointments there were numerous educational seminars and networking opportunities.
Davis met with event organizers from the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), U.S. Olympic Committee,
Amateur Softball Association, Ladies Professional Golf Association, along with many others.
More than 70 event owners attended the 2013 Symposium. Davis enjoyed the chance to showcase the city’s new sporting venues.
“It was a great opportunity to sell the Sanford Pentagon, the Community Indoor Tennis Center, the Scheels Iceplex, and the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on a oneon-one basis.” Davis said. “We have always been a great sporting community, but now with the new facilities we are able to host events that we couldn’t in the past.”
Sioux Falls hosts first U.S. International Conference for ICPS
The local chapter of the International Consortium of Parse Scholars (ICPS) will host their 2014 international conference at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown in Sioux Falls. ICPS is a network of nurses and other individuals committed to the advancement of nursing as a scientific discipline.
The 17th Biennial International Conference on Humanbecoming will be held Sept. 26-28, 2014. “Living Quality: A Humanbecoming Perspective” will feature nurse theorist Rosemarie Rizzo Parse as keynote speaker. As the author of the humanbecoming theory, Parse has presented her work worldwide to a variety of audiences. Her theory of humanbecoming serves as a framework for nursing in theory,
practice, and research. Use of humanbecoming in practice has included multiple nursing settings such as: acute care, community, education, administration, and regulation. Humanbecoming embraces the phenomenon of living quality. Nurses who work with persons from this perspective seek a deeper understanding and meaning of human experiences as shared through reflection and story. The nurse’s presence with another is one of reverence while honoring human dignity and freedom of choice.
Next year’s conference will be the first held in the U.S. For more information on the ICPS 2014 Conference, contact Deb Letcher at Deborah.letcher@sanfordhealth. org or (605) 328-6306.

Building a healthier Sioux Falls June 19 Summit to Focus on Healthy Community Design
Across the nation, communities are facing the epidemics of physical inactivity and poor nutrition.
Unfortunately, Sioux Falls is not im mune to these health issues, which are now considered the second most prevalent root cause of death in the U.S., behind only to bacco as a premature killer.
Live Well Sioux Falls, a dynamic effort led by the City of Sioux Falls and a broadbased community coalition, has established community health goals that include eco nomic vibrancy, environmental sustainabil ity, social equity, quality of life and reduc tion in chronic disease risk.

“Good health doesn’t happen by chance,” said Sioux Falls Public Health Director Jill Franken. “Good health is shaped — and it is connected to the environments in which we live, work and play. And, it is tied to the resources available in our community.”
Sioux Falls is hosting a Healthy Community Design Summit featuring national expert Mark Fenton on Wednesday, June 19.
Fenton is a national public health, planning and transportation consultant; an adjunct associate professor at Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy; and former host of the “America’s Walking” series on PBS television. He
will present a keynote address on June 19 at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn City Centre.
This summit is designed to bring community leaders together to discuss strategies on creating a livable, sustainable and healthier community. Fenton’s presentation will explore the principles of healthy design to encourage more walking, bicycling and transit use.
Research studies and similar initiatives around the country have shown that improving physical activity of residents leads to personal health benefits and also helps improve air quality, diminish traffic congestion and associated costs, and boosts the economy — which helps business and the housing market.
According to Fenton, these community-based initiatives relating to healthy community design are essential to a healthy future.
“Thankfully those involved in local
land use and transportation planning have taken up the call,” Fenton said. “Even better, many communities are seeing coalitions between planners, engineers, health professionals, educators, elected officials, concerned citizens and others join the movement — some under the banner of smart growth or sustainable development, but more and more are simply recognizing that our very health and well-being are at stake.”
This program is free, but advanced registration is encouraged to reserve your seat. For more information or to register, contact Mary Michaels in the Sioux Falls Health Department at (605) 367-8286 or mmichaels@siouxfalls.org.

National expert, Mark Fenton will speak June 19-20 in Sioux Falls at the Healthy Community Design Summit.

The numbers don’t lie: major investments are being made in new residential and commercial construction projects throughout the city. Sioux Falls is on tap to break construction value records, with more than $200 million in permits already issued in the first four months of the year.
Major construction projects started in 2012 are starting to take shape all across the city. From the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center to new schools in both the Sioux Falls and Harrisburg School districts.
The number of new hotels planned is encouraging for the visitor industry as well as the economy, said Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Teri Schmidt.
“It shows that the visitor industry is increasing … that the hotel’s owners believe there is potential for successful business in our city,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt said the increase in new facilities, like the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, Sanford Pentagon, Scheel’s Iceplex and Community Indoor Tennis Center, there is a belief that Sioux Falls can host more visitors and events — requiring more hotel rooms. With the increase in

Residential construction is also on the
“Our members are busy, very busy,” said Julie Terrell, executive director of the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire (HBASE). “We’re hearing this from all aspects of the home building industry from the plumbers to the electricians to the framers. It’s great for our economy because when home building is strong, that financial kickback is felt throughout many other sectors of the local market as well.”
hotels, Sioux Falls will be closing in on having 5,000 rooms.
“Because of the sports and events facilities being built, there is belief that many of the increased visitors will come to Sioux Falls to participate and/or attend these events,” Schmidt said. “There is great momentum for increasing the amount of visitor events in our community.”
Another factor is the increasing medical care offered in the community, Schmidt said, which also brings visitors who often need to stay in Sioux Falls. One of the proposed new hotel properties would be built on the Sanford Hospital & USD Medical Center campus.
Statistics from the City of Sioux Falls show that single family units are up from 2012 and 2011, as well as townhomes and multiple family units. The total permits through the end of April this year for new residential construction— 975 — are up 345 percent above 2012 219 in 2012 and 176 in 2011.

“The hotel growth taking place in Sioux Falls is certainly a positive sign of growth,” Schmidt said. “The companies building these properties have done their homework on our community’s expanding

Just like visitor spending, the economic impact of residential construction can be huge. According to Terrell, the estimated one-year economic impact of building 100 single family homes in Sioux Falls includes: $16.6 million in local income; $1.5 million in taxes and other revenue for local governments; and 272 local jobs. The additional, annual recurring impact of building those homes includes: $2.9 million in local income; $605,000 in taxes and other revenue for local governments; and 53 local jobs.

The city’s newest middle school, located near Southeast Technical Institute, will open in August 2014. At 170,000 sq. ft., it is similar to Memorial Middle School and will accommodate the city’s growing northwest side. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in August 2012.

SUNDAY, JUNE 30
8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Event on streets, no motor vehicles . Food, beverage, and approved retail vendors may set up along
2 8 mile route
Argus Leader Media, Sioux Falls Sports Authority and the City of Sioux Falls are partnering to celebrate a weekend of cycling, wellness and fitness as part of the Live Well Sioux Falls initiative. Tour Sioux Falls will take place on June 29-30 with two different ways to experience bicycling and active living in Sioux Falls.
The purpose of Tour Sioux Falls is to celebrate biking as part of a healthy, active lifestyle and encourage less experienced riders to sample the joys of biking.
To participate, register at toursiouxfalls.com. Adults age 18 and up are $25 before June 14 and $30 after June 14; youth ages 6-17 are $10 prior to June 14 and $15 after June 14; and children younger than 6 are free. Included with paid registration is an official Tour Sioux Falls backpack, five fully supported rest stops, lunch on Saturday, an ice cream social on Sunday, prize drawings, a grand prize drawing (ages 18 and up), and event passports to be entered into the drawings).
On Saturday, participants will enjoy
the fully-opened Sioux Falls bike trail. There will be activities for families and kids at several parks along the trail. Each designated park will be a fun destination where riders can stretch their legs, get something to eat or drink, and chat with neighbors and local organizations about fitness and wellness opportunities throughout Sioux Falls. Lunch at Falls Park will be provided to registered participants. Saturday will culminate in a party on the River Greenway with music, food, and activities.
On Sunday, Sioux Falls will host its first-ever Cyclovia, a Spanish word meaning to open city streets to bicycles. This open street event is a great way to encourage people to adopt healthier, active transportation habits. From 8 a.m.-1 p.m., the 2.8 mile Cyclovia route from Falls Park through the downtown business district will be closed to vehicular traffic, giving participants the opportunity to explore downtown by bike. Everyone is encouraged to use bikes, skateboards, in-line skates, your feet — anything without a motor. Activities, including a kids

throughout the morning. The event concludes with a Sunday Social and grand prize drawing.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Argus Leader Media Foundation and will be used throughout the year to support Sioux Falls community organizations.
Vendor opportunities are available on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact Wes Hall at whall@siouxfalls.com. Many volunteer opportunities exist for both Saturday and Sunday. Visit www.sfsportsauthority.com for opportunities and benefits. For more information about Tour Sioux Falls, visit www.toursiouxfalls.com.
SDTBC helps companies grow through boot camp
After an application process, eight companies participated in the South Dakota Technology Business Center’s Business Launch Boot Camp. The winning businesses were: Sidewalk Technologies, FarmCast Group LLC, Braced with Style, App Solutions LLC, SurviveiT, Fiontar, SkinBait and Resistance Revolution.
The Business Launch Boot Camp was held May 21-23 and helps companies develop their business concept and launch quickly with a focus on generating sales. A select group of Boot Camp participants were offered additional incubation support and the opportunity to participate in the SDTBC Accelerator.
The SDTBC Accelerator is a series of monthly, one-day sessions held for six months, starting on June 27. The Accelerator helps entrepreneurs refine their business concept and model, focus on sales growth, and scale their company. Winning
companies were notified by May 31 and can earn up to $1,000 in incentives as well as part of a $20,000 funding pool and other in-kind services. Both the Boot Camp and the Accelerator are free and help prepare entrepreneurs for company growth.
“Helping launch and grow new tech nology-related businesses is core to our mission at the Technology Business Center,” said Pam Boehm, who manages the Center’s programs. “Through the Business Launch,” Boot Camp and Accelerator, entrepreneurs learn from and connect with accountants, business attorneys, IP attorneys, finance experts, management experts and investors. At the end of each program they have defined and refined their business and are better positioned to achieve success.”

The South Dakota Technology Business Center’s mission is to diversify and expand the regional economy by providing nationally recognized “best of class” entrepreneurial support services, networking opportunities and facilities to early-stage technology-based businesses and other technology companies expanding or relocating to South Dakota.
The 2013 Business Launch Boot Camp and Accelerator programs are sponsored by Forward Sioux Falls 2011-16 and
South Dakota EPSCoR. EPSCoR is the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research that is funded by the National Science Foundation. For more information
about the Boot Camp and Accelerator, visit www.sdtbc.com/accelerator or contact Pam Boehm at (605) 275-8008.
