Message from the Chair Cultivating a thriving community As a native South Dakotan, I hold a deep appreciation for our farmers. Agriculture isn’t just an economic driver — it’s a reflection of who we are as a people. It represents hard work, resilience and the ability to nurture growth from the ground up.

For me, it’s also personal. My grandfather was a farmer, and some of my best childhood memories are from summers spent on the farm. For a young boy, it was a dream — an endless place for imagination and discovery. But looking back, those experiences also offered timeless lessons about patience, stewardship and the importance of creating the right environment for growth.

I often ask the question: Do farmers grow crops? The simple answer is — no. They don’t grow crops; they create the conditions in which crops can grow and thrive. They cultivate healthy soil, apply the right amount of water and fertilizer and remove the weeds and rocks that can choke growth. Only then can their efforts yield a harvest.

The same is true for business and community. A thriving Sioux Falls won’t simply happen by chance — it will depend on the environment we cultivate together. As business and community leaders, we must remain intentional about investing in our people, fostering innovation and addressing the challenges that inevitably arise. Those “weeds” and “rocks” may take new forms, but they will always require consistent care and attention.

My optimism for the future of our community remains strong, because that farmer’s work ethic is embedded in so many of us. Most of us are only a generation or two removed from the farm, and the values instilled there remain alive and well: caring for our neighbors, showing up for one another and rolling up our sleeves to tackle the unknowns of tomorrow.

Those values are the bedrock of our success. If we continue to nurture them — just as a farmer tends the soil — we can ensure that Sioux Falls remains resilient, innovative and strong through both the seasons of abundance and the challenges yet to come.

New Faces & Promotions McCrossan Boys Ranch announced the appointment of Christy J. Vastenhout, CFRE, as its new executive director, effective Dec. 1, 2025. Vastenhout brings decades of nonprofit leadership experience, holds the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential, and is committed to advancing the organization’s mission of serving at-risk youth and strengthening communities.

She will succeed Brian Roegiers, who retired at the end of 2025 after 27 years of service with McCrossan Boys Ranch.

Roegiers joined the organization in 1998 and helped guide significant growth and program expansion during his tenure.

The First National Bank in Sioux Falls announced the promotion of Mya Smith to portfolio manager. Smith has been with the bank for three years and previously served as an investment analyst. The bank also announced that Greg Nelson has joined the organization as a family office advisor with FNB Reserve, a division of First National Wealth Management that serves high-net-worth families. Nelson brings nearly 20 years of financial services experience, including 13 years focused on corporate finance.

The University of South Dakota’s Beacom School of Business has named Klaus Beckmann as interim dean, effective June 2025. Beckmann, who previously served as associate dean and chair of the accounting and finance department, has been leading the business school’s efforts in expanding programs, supporting reaccreditation and enhancing opportunities such as new MBA options in Sioux Falls and experiential learning initiatives. He joined USD as an assistant professor of finance in 2016 and received tenure in 2022.

Brandon Fettes, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Associate joins Architecture Incorporated’s Sioux Falls office as a Licensed Architect. Fettes earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Master of Architecture from Iowa State University and has nine years of field experience. He will contribute to architectural design across a range of projects, collaborate with engineering consultants to complete construction documents, manage bidding and negotiations, oversee contract administration and coordinate project closeout.

Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown has named Rachel Pritchett as its new director of sales and marketing.

Pritchett brings more than 10 years of hospitality experience to the role and will lead sales and marketing efforts for the recently opened 216-room hotel, the first Canopy by Hilton in South Dakota, including group sales, business travel and local partnerships. She previously worked as a freelance hotel consultant and has held sales leadership roles across Hilton, Marriott, IHG and independent properties.

Journey Group Companies has named Brian Gramm as its next chief executive officer, effective Jan. 1, 2026, succeeding Randy Knecht, who plans to retire after more than 15 years as CEO. Gramm previously served as Journey’s chief financial officer and chief strategy officer for nearly five years and also consulted for the company through his own firm. Good Deeds The Sioux Falls Noon Sertoma Club announced three major donations totaling more than $344,000 in support of the new all-inclusive Sertoma Legacy Playground at Sertoma Park. The donations will support the construction of a fully accessible playground designed to serve children of all abilities. Black Hills Federal Credit Union (BHFCU) has supported student success for nearly three decades through its School Support Drive, contributing $45,000 in 2025 to schools and educators across its communities.

Jerry Schmitz honored as 2026 Agribusiness Citizen of the Year

As a founding member of the South Dakota Soybean Association, Jerry Schmitz recognized early on the importance of producers standing up to promote soybeans in the state in the early 1980s.

That early involvement grew into a leadership role with lasting impact that has not gone unnoticed. Schmitz has been selected as the 2026 Agribusiness Citizen of the Year by the Agribusiness Division of the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce.

He grew up on a farm near Elk Point, S.D., before graduating from South Dakota State University with a degree in agricultural education. After graduation, he and his wife, Sally, moved to their farm near Vermillion, S.D., where they farmed for 40 years.

As a recent graduate and young farmer in 1980, Schmitz attended a co-op meeting where a speaker from the American Soybean Association posed the question: How would you like to grow a crop where, rather than always chasing the next best option, you focus on improving that crop through research and selling it to the world?

“That really grabbed my attention, and the gentleman called me back about a week later and said, ‘Why don’t we start an association in South Dakota?’” Schmitz said.

He and two other farmers started a soybean association in South Dakota soon after that meeting by gathering names of farmers from county agents and renting telephone space in an ambulance barn in Elk Point.

Schmitz addresses attendees at AgOutlook. This event is the South Dakota Soybean Association and Soybean Checkoff’s annual convention and trade show, held in Sioux Falls. The event typically attracts 600–800 farmers from across the tri-state area.

“We just started calling farmers. We explained what the association was, and at that time rail service was being shut down in South Dakota. A number of railroads just didn’t see the economic value, so that was one of the issues we thought needed to be addressed,” he said.

The growth of the association in the state moved quickly, with Schmitz being elected the first president of the South Dakota Soybean Association and later being elected national director for the American Soybean Association. He served on the association board until the mid-1980s, when he and his wife decided to start a family.

“We were all effective together in getting our message out. That’s pretty important, not only for families in South Dakota, but for the economy of our state and the United States,” he said.

On the checkoff side, they recognize China as a huge market for U.S. soybeans, but Schmitz said diversification is

He and his wife built a new home a few miles from the farm, where their son is now farming.

In his role as executive director, a key issue Schmitz and the association have worked on recently has been tariffs. He noted that national and state organizations have been effective in getting their concerns expressed to President Donald Trump, as well as through headline news outlets and the television talk show “The View.”

Schmitz met with U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau in 2019 at his residence in Mexico City to discuss the United States– Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA).

needed — not only in supplying soybeans and meal to other countries, but also in exploring opportunities within the United States through feed and other products developed through checkoff-funded research.

The checkoff was created by a congressional bill in 1990.

Schmitz said the checkoff board cannot engage in policy, while the association can address policy issues and work alongside the checkoff. The United Soybean Board determined that states would collect funds and forward one-half of what they collect to the national level.

In Schmitz’s view, soybean production is critically important to South Dakota. From the sale of soybeans alone, he estimates $2 billion to $3 billion in raw income annually. That figure does not include the added value of soybean oil and meal or the value those products bring to livestock production.

“It’s used more and more as the protein of choice because of the essential amino acid complex that it has,”

Schmitz said. “It actually has all of the essential amino acids that animals, including humans, require for bone and muscle strength.”

With agriculture and soybean markets operating on a global stage, having the association and checkoff offices in Sioux Falls has been beneficial, he said, as they work with more than 30 organizations, including the U.S. Soybean Export Council, the U.S. Meat Export Federation and the South Dakota Pork Producers Council. Many of those organizations fly in and out of Sioux Falls, making the location convenient for meetings.

They also host multiple international trade teams throughout the year.

“It is helpful, especially if they have some time on their hands, that they can stop by and we can talk about what we do in South Dakota and what we can do to help them,” Schmitz said.

The SD Soybean Checkoff’s 2017 China/Thailand trade mission connected with buyers at crush plants and soy food processing facilities in Tianjin and Dalian, China, as well as feed buyers, pork and poultry producers, and vegetable oil businesses in Bangkok, Thailand.

Wirt Family named 2026 Farm Family of the Year

Getting involved and promoting agriculture are important to Adam and Melissa Wirt.

Through 4-H, FFA and the Stockyards Ag Experience, the Wirts enjoy giving back to the community and spreading a positive message of agriculture. Adam volunteers his time teaching youth about livestock judging and raising sheep, while Melissa works part time at the Stockyards Ag Experience, reaching people from all over the region.

The Wirts have been selected as the 2026 Farm Family of the Year by the Agribusiness Division of the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce.

Adam and Melissa live on a farm south of Lennox, S.D., with their two daughters, Jovie, 18, and Emerson, 15.

The Wirts’ commitment to the agriculture industry started at a young age for both of them.

Growing up on a dairy farm in the Big Stone City, S.D., area, Melissa was active in 4-H and FFA before attending South Dakota State University, where she earned degrees in animal science and wildlife and fisheries. After they

were married, she continued her education and earned an associate’s degree in veterinary technology from Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Neb. She spent 15 years working as a vet tech in Sioux Falls at All City Vet Care East while also providing support on the farm. In the past couple of years, she earned her teaching certificate from SDSU and began teaching biology at the Harrisburg freshman academy this fall.

“I liked the job I was at, but as you get a little bit older, you kind of want to advance, and there wasn’t much room for advancement at the vet clinic,” Melissa said. “I tell everybody I could not have taught as a 24-year-old straight out of college, but with age comes some patience and wisdom.

I definitely now have the ability to work with kids and enjoy it.”

She is looking forward to lambing time and the opportunity to share the miracle of birth on the farm with her students.

Adam grew up on a farm near Parker, S.D., and after graduating from Parker High School, he attended SDSU, where

he and Melissa met. After earning his degree in agricultural systems technology, he thought he would return to the farm, but there wasn’t an opening with his grandpa, dad and uncle already actively involved in the operation.

The Wirts moved to their current farm in 2005. In 2018, they built the barn where they house their sheep. Adam’s family has been farming in the area for generations.

At the time, a new POET ethanol plant had opened in Chancellor, S.D. Adam decided to seek a job there and bide some time until there was an opening on the farm. After spending 14 months at POET Chancellor, he took another job within POET in Hanlontown, Iowa. After eight months, he was transferred to the Hudson, S.D., plant as a manager.

His grandparents bought a farm south of Parker in the 1950s. His grandpa built the operation as a seedstock farm where he produced gilts and boars. He started with Duroc pigs, then Adam’s dad started Hampshire pigs and his uncle raised Yorkshire pigs. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the operation shifted to producing pigs geared toward 4-H and FFA projects.

For a time, he worked in research for POET. That opportunity allowed him to work with producers, equipment manufacturers and new technologies.

Adam and his sister, Sarah Baloun, continue the swine and sheep production sale, with the sale this March marking 48 years.

“For me, it hit really close to where my degree was and what I hoped to do. When I left college, I was hoping that I could find a job with a John Deere or Case testing equipment, and it never worked out,” Adam said.

Adam’s dad, Randy, started raising Suffolk sheep.

After Adam graduated from college, he went to some dispersal sales and bought some Southdown sheep to add to the operation.

He later managed the Scotland, S.D., plant. Today, he works as the general manager at POET Hudson.

Adam and Sarah’s mom, Chris, continues to be heavily involved in the farming operation, with Sarah serving as the main driver of the farm. They farm about 750 acres of corn, soybeans and a little alfalfa.

During the spring and fall, Adam takes some days off to help with fieldwork. He also takes time off to help with lambing.

They market about 60–70 lambs in the spring, retain about 10–20 ewe lambs and take feeder lambs to Sioux Falls Regional Livestock.

Growing up, both Adam and Melissa were involved in 4-H and FFA. Today, daughters Jovie and Emerson work hard to care for their animal projects and take on leadership roles.

“Where Melissa was involved in the more outgoing activities in 4-H, that’s not Jovie and definitely not Emerson, but if you get them into small group settings, I think they really thrive in those kinds of things. You can see the club activities that they do, Jovie steps in. They gravitate toward helping younger kids,” Adam said.

Melissa has served as a 4-H club leader and works part time at the Stockyards Ag Experience in Sioux Falls. She enjoys talking to kids about where their food comes from and getting them to think about agriculture.

“We get to talk to them about breakfast and pizza and read a story, and that gets them thinking about their food,” Melissa said.

Adam serves on the church council at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hurley, S.D., the Stockyards Ag Experience board, the South Dakota Born and Bred Association, the South Dakota Show Lamb Boosters board and as vice president of the South Dakota Ethanol Producers Association.

Adam says it’s important to get involved and to educate others about agriculture.

“We love to support our local 4-H and FFA groups,” Adam said. “We enjoy giving back to those things where the kids are and try to keep them interested and excited. If they’re not coming back to the farm or to ag, we’re in trouble.”

Business Advocacy

Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce 2026 Legislative Platform In order to develop its legislative platform, the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce (Chamber), through its Issues Management Council, conducts research, hears presentations and surveys its members about issues affecting business. These efforts, combined with actively following and monitoring legislative activity, guide our efforts toward developing the legislative platform. The Issues Management Council makes platform recommendations to the Board of Directors, which is the Chamber's final policy decision-making body.

Business Climate & Economic Development

The Chamber believes our economy is best served by allowing free and open competition in the marketplace in an environment that encourages business development and expansion. Laws that preclude or give an advantage to one business structure or arrangement over another ultimately lessen competition and reduce our area's attractiveness as a business location. Appropriate rules and regulations may be required for a viable free market, but government intrusion should not inhibit or restrict business unnecessarily.

The Chamber supports economic development with local, regional and state programs including, but not limited to, the Revolving Economic Development and Initiative (REDI) Fund, the Future Fund, the Building South Dakota Fund and Tax Increment Financing. The Chamber supports workforce-focused programs, addressing infrastructure and revolving fund loans, workforce, education housing, childcare and grants to offset certain taxes for qualifying projects. We will continue to monitor the use and impact of these programs, and we will closely analyze any legislation that impacts these programs and other economic development efforts in our state.

Transportation and Infrastructure

The Chamber recognizes that safe, efficient and responsive infrastructure is critical to economic development and commerce in greater Sioux Falls and throughout South Dakota. The Chamber supports the continued evaluation of our roads, bridge systems, air, rail, water, sewer, telecommunications, energy, public transit and public facilities on an ongoing basis. Current funding, including local flexibilities, should be carefully reviewed before new funding is considered.

Workforce Housing

The Chamber supports expanding workforce housing and support services for workforce development, retention and recruitment that is accessible for low and moderate-income individuals. The Chamber promotes innovative solutions that will make workforce housing more accessible. The Chamber continues to support the Housing Infrastructure Fund that is administered by the South Dakota Housing Authority.

The State Budget

The Chamber supports a balanced budget even if it means making difficult decisions. Balancing the budget can be done in many ways and the Chamber supports creative solutions to addressing

this issue. We continue to see no need for a state income tax. The Chamber supports efforts to leverage resources to ensure programs are funded appropriately.

Education

The future of greater Sioux Falls and South Dakota depends on educating our residents and developing our workforce to remain competitive on a regional, national and international scale. It is vital to foster an educational system that works in tandem with the business community and government to address and support quality education and workforce development initiatives. Quality education is essential for the business community to attract new employers and employees and to educate a growingly diverse workforce.

To support our state’s residents and to meet our workforce development needs, the Chamber supports the appropriate allocation of public monies to ensure funds for an equitable, effective and efficient system of early childhood learning, K-12 education, and post-secondary education systems.

Early Childhood Learning: The Chamber encourages and supports efforts to provide quality and affordable early childhood education for all children in South Dakota, including Pre-K. We support identifying strategies at the state, local and federal levels to fund and implement these programs. The Chamber also supports increasing the efficiency and availability of early childhood learning programs, including public and private partnerships.

K-12: The Chamber supports a quality and fully funded public education system. Fair compensation and benefits for our educators is also critical to retaining and attracting quality workforce in our public education system. We recognize some districts that are sparsely populated may require additional resources per student to ensure quality education. However, districts that choose to remain small, and may require additional financial subsidies in those instances, should be critically reviewed. We encourage the use of technology-based instruction to enhance access to master teachers and course topics that are not available in our smaller districts. We also discourage school districts from recruiting students with various incentives. The Chamber encourages increases in efficiency and innovation to continue to reflect the changing demographics of our K-12 students.

Post-Secondary Education: The Chamber recognizes that educated, well-trained and skilled workers are critical to growing our workforce. We believe that supporting our postsecondary education systems, which includes the Regental

and Technical Education systems, is imperative to continuing to educate our residents and supply our workforce needs. To retain our students, the Chamber encourages the expansion of scholarship funding, as well as the use of recruitment and retention tools. This includes, but is not limited to, the needs-based Freedom Scholarship, Build Dakota Scholarship and South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship. We support adequate funding for our post-secondary education systems and encourage continued consideration of funding options to address tuition cost and new student opportunities. Further, we encourage public and business input into our post-secondary education systems to better align its programs with the needs of residents and the business community.

Local Government

The Chamber is concerned about the current lack of resources available to our local governments to address behavioral and mental health, criminal justice costs, and infrastructure needs. We believe that collaborative partnerships and improved funding will benefit our local government entities moving forward.

The Chamber supports the ability to allow local governments to impose a sales tax for community enhancement project purposes.

Provided there is an affirmative vote of the communities’ residents, and the tax is tied to specific projects for a set period of time. We believe this type of local control proposal is the best way for a community to determine the need for such a tax and measure the willingness of local voters to impose a tax in their community.

Health Care and Wellness

The Chamber recognizes the role the non-profit healthcare community plays in providing essential services, including behavioral and mental healthcare, to our most vulnerable residents and supports appropriate funding for them. We support the state’s reimbursement rates to align with providers’ true costs associated with those essential services. The Chamber encourages alternative options for providing care for the elderly that is safe and cost effective.

Community Building

The Chamber recognizes the growing diversity of our state’s population and we embrace the opportunities that this diversity provides for a culturally and talent-rich community. We will work with residents, our partners, community and state agencies, and elected officials to engage and include all individuals in our state who seek to work together to enhance our communities. This includes providing information and services that are more easily consumed by English Second Language residents so all residents can participate in our workforce and our community. As we work to meet the workforce challenges evident today and predicted well into the future, legal immigration and refugee resettlement are proven and important strategies. We will also resist initiatives that inappropriately sanction or discriminate against individuals or groups.

Business Owner Rights

The Chamber opposes unnecessary intrusions into employer and employee relationships. This includes opposing policies that prevent a business from exercising their own financial interests or internal policies. We support voluntary agreements between management and the workforce establishing compensation, benefits, hours and working conditions.

The Chamber also supports the employer’s ability to ensure a safe environment for employees and patrons. While the Chamber supports the right to gun ownership, we have also maintained that property and business owners have the right to restrict fire-arm possession on their property if they so choose, and will continue to support this position.

Tourism/Visitor Industry

The Chamber supports funding mechanisms for the visitor and tourism industry as it continues to be a vital part of the greater Sioux Falls and South Dakota economy. Funding mechanisms to support these efforts include, but are not limited to, the Business Improvement District (BID) tax and the tourism tax.

Initiative and Referendum

The Chamber believes that South Dakota’s longstanding tradition of allowing direct citizen access to the ballot through the initiative and referendum processes should remain. We encourage an ongoing review of the rules and requirements surrounding constitutional and statutory ballot measures.

Agribusiness Industry

Agriculture has been the primary economic driver in our state since 1889. The Chamber supports legislation that enhances agribusiness in South Dakota, including the expansion of agricultural products, services and technologies.

Sports Wagering

The Chamber supports efforts by the legislature to permit sports gaming to occur within physical establishments located throughout the state. We support the concept that these establishments should be licensed to perform such activities.

Recreational Cannabis

While the Chamber opposes the legalization of cannabis for recreational use, should expansion occur, we encourage our elected officials to work prudently to implement the enacting law. Employer liability is a chief concern as there is no legal standard for determining when an employee is under the influence and when the employee is cognitively impaired. Additional employer concerns include workplace and patron safety, employer business insurance loss of coverage, and that cannabis remains an illegal substance at the federal level.

Environment

The Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce places a high priority on safeguarding and conserving both the quality and quantity of our area's natural amenities. Government, in partnership with businesses and residents, should share responsibility for conserving, enhancing and protecting our natural resources. Given the substantial public and private investments to develop the river greenway, and the potential to develop a first-class amenity in our community, strategies seeking to improve the water quality in the Big Sioux and its tributaries should continue to be identified and implemented.

Chamber to host first-ever Regional Civics Bee Civics connects us to one another. It reminds us that our voices, when informed and engaged, build stronger communities. Civics connects us to one another and to our communities. When people are informed and engaged, their voices help strengthen the places we live and work. Understanding civics helps us see how our communities function — and how we can help make them better.

The Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is excited to announce it will host a Regional Civics Bee in Sioux Falls in 2026.

The competition is free and open to students enrolled in sixth, seventh and eighth grades in area schools. To apply, students will submit a guided essay focused on opportunities for growth they see in their community. Local judges will then select finalists to advance to the regional competition, which mirrors a traditional spelling bee format.

During the regional competition, 20 finalists will compete by answering two rounds of civics-based questions. In rounds one and two, all students answer the same 10 multiple-choice questions per round and earn one point for each correct answer.

The top five scorers from those rounds will advance to the final round, where each student will present a three-sentence summary of the essay they submitted with their application. A panel of event judges will ask each student follow-up questions and evaluate their answers using a specified judging rubric.

Scores from the final round will be added to earlier rounds to determine the top three winners. Students who place in the top three will receive trophies, prizes and an invitation to the State Finals, where they will compete against students from across South Dakota.

This marks the first year the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce will host a Regional Civics Bee and the second year the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce will host the State Finals.

The event aims to increase civic education, foster local competition and engage future leaders in the greater Sioux Falls area. This is an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of civics and to form lasting friendships with other competitors.

Intern Sioux Falls connects students at regional colleges and universities with internships in the Sioux Falls area and offers summer events that help interns explore the community and build connections. The Foundation is preparing for the program’s fourth year.

“Sioux Falls is one of the best places to be a young professional,” said Riley Johnson, talent recruitment coordinator for the Sioux Falls Development Foundation. “By promoting internships at Sioux Falls businesses to students at our regional education institutions, we hope they can experience it for themselves and choose Sioux Falls as the place to start their careers upon graduation.”

The program offers two main benefits to employers.

During the academic year, Foundation staff attend career fairs at regional colleges and universities to promote internships in Sioux Falls. Available positions are listed at siouxfalls.com/intern, which serves as a centralized internship job board for students.

Organizations with internships are invited to be listed on the site, while students can browse openings, explore summer housing resources and register for Intern Sioux Falls summer events once registration opens. Digital marketing targeted to the metro areas of participating schools helps drive traffic to the site.

Chamber engages in national childcare solutions conversation Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jeff Griffin recently attended the Early Childhood and Business Advisory Council: All-States Convening, held Dec. 8–10 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The conference brought together state and local business leaders and early childhood stakeholders from across the country to explore strategies for expanding access to high-quality, affordable childcare—an issue with direct implications for workforce participation and economic growth.

The event was jointly hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Bipartisan Policy Center and the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska. South Dakota participants also included representatives from Elevate Rapid City and the South Dakota Association for the Education of Young Children.

"We are committed to this long term effort in bringing national best practices to South Dakota, " Griffin said. "Aligning the needs with funding and solutions to help businesses and families is a tall order. We are fortunate to be included."

Protecting your business from wire fraud In today’s digital age, wire fraud is unfortunately becoming all too common, especially among businesses. As a recent victim of this tactic, I want to share my experience — along with some best practices — to help fellow Chamber members protect themselves from the same fate.

Not long ago, my insurance agency fell prey to a sophisticated phishing scheme Paul that cost us $6,000. The scammer manVan Engelenhoven aged to capture my email format and Hammerstone Insurance Group use my name, creating a false sense of trust. They crafted an email that appeared as though it was sent by me, prompting our accounting department to make a wire transfer they believed was legitimate. Luckily, we had fraud coverage on the agency’s business insurance.

In another, even more distressing incident, a client wired us $25,000 based on an email I had previously sent. The fraudster altered the bank account details and manipulated the email to make it appear authentically mine. Fortunately, both the client and our agency were able to intervene in time and recover some of the money. However, not every story ends on a positive note. The consequences of these scams can be devastating — not just financially, but reputationally as well.

We reported both incidents to the FBI and local police.

Understanding how these scams operate is the first step in safeguarding your business. Scammers often rely on social engineering techniques, using information gathered from social media, websites and networking activity. They then create emails that appear legitimate, complete with your contact details. Because of this, it’s essential to be mindful of what information you share publicly and to approach all financial requests with caution.

Strategies to avoid wire fraud:

1. Verify email addresses. Always double-check the email address of anyone requesting financial information or money transfers. Phishing attempts often come from addresses that look nearly identical to legitimate ones, with small differences that are easy to overlook.

2. Implement confirmatory processes. Before executing any wire transfer, establish a protocol that requires verification through a second method of communication. For example, if you receive an email requesting a wire transfer, follow up with a phone call to a known, trusted number.

3. Educate employees. Conduct regular training sessions so employees understand the warning signs of phishing and wire fraud. Encouraging vigilance and creating a culture of caution can significantly reduce risk.

4. Use security software. Invest in reliable security tools and email filters that help detect suspicious activity. Firewalls, encryption and up-to-date antivirus programs are important first lines of defense.

5. Monitor accounts. Regularly review your business bank accounts for unauthorized transactions. Setting up alerts for large or unusual activity can provide early warning and limit potential losses.

6. Know what to do if you’re targeted. If you believe fraud has occurred, act quickly. Contact your bank immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement. The faster you respond, the better your chances of recovering funds.

7. Consider cyber insurance. Cyber insurance policies are available through many carriers and can help protect businesses from losses related to fraud and cybercrime.

8. While scams like these can feel overwhelming, staying informed and taking proactive steps can significantly reduce your risk. By sharing experiences and knowledge, we can work together to build a safer and more resilient business community.

Brandon Hanson Brandon Hanson is the CEO of Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc., where he leads efforts to support a vibrant, thriving downtown. Previously, he led EmBe’s childcare and schoolage programs and advanced from Exhibitions Assistant to Director of Museums at the Washington Pavilion, where he managed major projects and launched the Pavilion’s SculptureWalk partnership. Known for his collaborative leadership style, Hanson focuses on building strong relationships and creating meaningful community impact. He lives in Sioux Falls with his wife, Brittany, and their daughters, Scarlet and Juliet.

surprised you most about stepping into 1 What the leadership role at Downtown Sioux Falls?

How much more impact we can have. DTSF is nearly 40 years old, but we’re at a moment where we can build on an incredibly strong foundation and step into work that wasn’t even imaginable decades ago. I was surprised by how respected this organization is and how critical it is to the broader community, not just to people who attend events. Much of our work shapes what downtown will look like for future generations. It’s often invisible and hard to quantify, but it carries deep purpose. We’re caretakers of something bigger than ourselves, carrying the torch forward to ensure downtown outlives us.

skill has become more important 2 What to your job over time?

Relationships. Full stop. Every membership, sponsorship, partnership, hire, or job application ultimately comes down to one thing: people deciding whether they want to invest their time and energy with you. Money is secondary. Time is the most valuable resource we have, because it’s the only one we can’t get back. That reality has made authenticity, genuine curiosity, and a willingness to go first incredibly important to me. Strong relationships aren’t transactional. They’re built through trust, consistency, and showing up before you’re asked.

What does responsible leadership look like in a community-facing role?

For me, leadership and service are inseparable. Responsible leadership starts with managing myself, which is often the hardest part and the only thing I can truly control. If we want accountability, we have to be willing to follow up. If we want trust, we have to be consistent. Community-facing leadership means showing up with humility, clarity, and a willingness to do the work even when it’s unseen or uncomfortable.

do you see the Chamber and 4 How Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. working together to support local businesses?

I view the Chamber and DTSF as deeply symbiotic organizations. Downtown is often described as the heart of Sioux Falls, and our work at DTSF is focused on caring for that heart: the built environment, economic development, placemaking, activation, and driving foot traffic. The Chamber operates with a broader lens and provides layers of support that are critical at a citywide and statewide level, particularly around advocacy and policy. If downtown is the heart, the Chamber helps care for the nervous system.

We’re proud members of the Chamber, and when people ask me which organization they should belong to, my answer is always both. Downtown environments are complex, and it takes multiple organizations working together to keep the engine running smoothly.

you’re not working, where can we usually find you?

5 When Mostly at home. My three girls and our golden doodle are everything to me. They are the real “why” behind the long hours and strong work ethic.

I want them to grow up in a community that is cared for, where neighbors know each other, and where people are invested in the place they live. My wife and I also love the arts and attend as many shows as we possibly can. That creative energy fuels both our family life and my work.
