was paid in cream from the Gastmeier farm. Her favourite stop in Sioux Lookout was Furlane’s, a local candy shop where the few pennies she had to spend went for sweets for her and her friends. As a young lady she attended St. Mary’s Business Academy in Winnipeg, Manitoba, completing a two-year secretarial program. She was a master in short hand, becoming secretary to the Colonel at the Technical Training School for airmen south of St. Thomas, Ontario upon enlistment in 1942. The sprawling 5,000 person facility had been recently constructed as a psychiatric by the Hepburn regime but seconded to the war effort before being commissioned as a hospital. Working in the records department of the war effort she kept potential beaus at bay by referencing bonafides. After victory she returned to N.W. Ontario still in uniform, stopping in Hudson, Ontario where she captivated a young store clerk and future husband, Leo Bernier. Bernier, who had to run a phalanx of Gastmeier brothers, took the train to Allanwater asking the senior Gastmeier for permission to court his heart’s desire, before proposing to Marjory. They were married August 22, 1949. Neither of the pair realized that Marge’s Hudson employer “Slim” Dart president of Patricia Transportation Limited and the groom’s father Joe Bernier of Rolling Portage Lumber Company helped promote the marriage, each for their own reasons – the highly trained Marjory Gastmeier would have been too great a loss to Patricia Transportation and Bernier who had aspirations as an airline pilot and had been invited to further his flight training with C.P.A., was a key in the senior Bernier’s growing enterprise including a general store. In addition to her daily work at Patricia Transportation the young wife took on the bookkeeping
duties for her brother Leo’s local Grandview Hotel and the Hudson Water Work’s. Hudson Water Works was established to install a water distribution system for the hamlet where incidentally, minnows were used to thread fish line which was used to pull a copper heating coil through the lines the prevent winter freeze up. In due time they were blessed with four children, Janice Ann -1951, Karen Rae – 1954, Donald Edward Dallas Joseph Leo – 1955 and John David – 1960. During this time Marge loved curling as well as her work in the Hudson Hospital Auxiliary, the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) and the Hudson Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion where she served as its perennial secretary treasurer along side her brother Otto, the Legion’s proudest promoter and ticket seller. Two of Marge’s treasured highlights of recent years were a lifetime member award from the Royal Canadian Legion and a lifetime membership awarded by the CWL. With her children in grade school her husband entered politics and became the Provincial Member of Parliament and within a short period of time went on to become a very important member of the provincial cabinet. Leo served his beloved district faithfully for 21 years and Marjory had the honour and privilege of meeting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and was presented to Pope John Paul II. Leo and Marge often hosted countless political figures and heads of state at their cabin on Big Vermilion Lake. Ever the stalwart voice of the political right in her family, Marge always cautioned a soft word in her husband’s often embroiled debates over many issues including mercury pollution in the English River System. Leo’s tough stand on issues of environmental importance often caused serious reactions by those that opposed his views. Those opposing him
were known to retaliate with death threats and threats of violence towards him and his family. Along with round-theclock police protection, Marge was always there for her family, protecting and sheltering them from these threats of violence, by extremists. Marge was pleased to see her family grow. Janice married Brian Evans from Calgary Alberta (a Big V alumnus) and they have three children. Ted married Carolyne and they have two sons, Jake and Joel. Jennifer married Ben and Abby and Calder followed. Wade is married to Janelle. Karen married Ralph (another Big V alumnus) and they have four children. Adam married Jennifer and they have John, Rebecca, Kali and Sam. Robert is married to Anna. John is at Stanford University and Alyssa is a senior in high school. Her son Don married Claire and they have three children - Jacqueline who attends Laurier University, Michael is in high school and Alex is in Grade 7. Youngest son John is married to Gina McFee-Bernier of local real estate fame. After her passing on January 5, 2010, the community surrounded her family with love and concern. A funeral mass was held to celebrate her life on January 11, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church with Father Mike Mahoney officiating. Interment followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The family requests that donations in her memory be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Royal Canadian Legion, or the Meno-Ya-Win Health Centre through the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, Box 1449, Sioux Lookout Ontario P8T 1B9. Marjory Bernier was a woman who could go from a simple housedress to a ball gown, from a back yard barbecue to a formal banquet and fit in anywhere in between. She was a wonderful wife, mother and loyal friend. She is sadly missed by all.
