Three mummies we spoke to share with us their pregnancy stories on how they didn’t know they were pregnant.

“My husband couldn’t believe it. He went, ‘WHAT? Are you sure?’ Though my husband was ecstatic to find out that we were expecting, he was initially in disbelief,” she shares with a sheepish smile.

he discovery of Masrifah’s pregnancy was not typical – it wasn’t through a home pregnancy test kit or a trip to the OBGYN – she found out she was pregnant only when she started bleeding a week after her period ended.

decided to consult her doctor though she was feeling in the pink of health. “I just wanted to be sure that everything was ok, I didn’t go and see the doctor to be told that I was pregnant and possibly having a baby anytime!” she says.

“Can you imagine? I found out I was pregnant only when the baby was well into the third trimester at seven months! I was having my period regularly for the previous six months and I did not suspect that I was pregnant. There was no morning sickness and I was already then a mother of three. I knew how it feels like to be pregnant.”

“We were totally caught off-guard.

There were absolutely no signs – no vomiting, no special cravings and no weight gain. I was out and about doing my usual night shift rounds and duties as a nurse!”

Masrifah describes.

Adding on to the surprise immediately was the stress and guilt of realising how she didn’t give the prenatal care that a growing foetus should get.

Because she didn’t know she was pregnant, she missed out on taking the supplements that are beneficial to growth and development, especially during the first trimester. As a nurse, Masrifah knew the importance of prenatal supplements such as folic acid. All she could do then was to follow her doctor’s advice and pray that everything will be all right – it was a test of faith.

There was no time to lose and the family scrambled to prepare for baby’s arrival. Preparing for the little one’s arrival was surreal.

“It really felt like a gift from God. A pleasant surprise that came with occasional anxiety and guilt trips of ‘if only I knew earlier’ and ‘how can I not know’!”

After two short months, she delivered the fourth child! “It was such a special moment to finally deliver! We finally met this little one who announced her presence only at seven months!” exclaimed Mas.

“I stood in a pool of blood.”

eing one who is health-conscious and very aware of her body, Heather (not her real name) was shocked to find out that she was pregnant the hard way – through a miscarriage. “I was showering and suddenly, I started to bleed profusely and the entire bathroom floor was bloody! I didn’t know what to do and froze,” Heather recalls.

It was only minutes later that she snapped out of shock and got dressed. Somehow, her first instinct was to get hold of a pregnancy test kit at the pharmacy. “I almost fainted when I saw the faint double strips that indicated positive – I was pregnant. And what would the profuse bleeding mean?” That night, all Heather could think of was the little life in her.

The following morning, at the gynaecologist’s clinic, her initial shock and

fear was turned to dismay when she found out that her baby’s heartbeat was weak, and that she had little chance of carrying it to full term. On top of that, it was a threatened miscarriage. To prevent further complications to both mother and child, Heather underwent D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure.

Though it was traumatic for Heather, she remarked with positivity, “It happened so quickly, it was like I suddenly had a baby one day, and the next, it was taken away. But I believe in fate, what is mine is mine – what is meant to be is meant to be.”

A few months shortly after this episode, Heather managed to overcome the stress.

She later conceived and subsequently delivered her healthy firstborn at full term.

Fast forward, she is now a mother of two though her second pregnancy saw a little ‘drama’ with some heavy spotting.

“I felt abnormal.”

Yvonne is a young mother of one who is loving her new parenting role.

And the rest of the pregnancy was everything a mum-to-be could ask for. Yvonne didn’t feel any discomfort and nausea was not even in her dictionary.

She ate everything she

wanted and constantly wondered why some expectant mums would develop an aversion to different smells, especially food with fish and garlic. “I thought I was abnormal and I didn’t feel pregnant at all.”

It also seemed that she felt bad when people exclaimed, “What, no morning sickness?

That’s very lucky!” It seemed like she didn’t get to experience a full pregnancy. But she is thankful and grateful for the smooth pregnancy, “I worked till the day before my scheduled delivery,” she beamed with fond memories.

And of course, Alex is happy that he didn’t need to go on food cravings duty to buy different types of foods at ungodly hours.

Pacifier is a common cause of rashes because of the saliva that it collects and it likely occurs around the corner of your infant’s mouth.

Rash around the mouth and on cheeks is common for infants and this is typically caused by salivation left on the skin for extended period of time.

Leftover food from food smears around the mouth and on cheeks may cause a rash to develop, especially if it is not cleaned immediately after a meal.

Infants, babies and even young children develop rashes around their mouths and faces if they rub their faces on the clothes their parents are wearing.

Always shower and change into clean clothes especially after running errands, work or simple chores. Do not sit on the bed with the pants you wore out.

To disinfect them, place them in a plastic bag and freeze for 24 hours to kill the mites and follow with washing.

For toys that are heavily stained, sprinkle baking soda over stained spots then put them into the washing machine. Then, add in three caps of white vinegar together with detergent into the washing machine.

Place toys in a pot of boiling water for about 10 minutes and let them cool off. If they can’t be boiled, clean with detergent and very hot water.

Allergic contact dermatitis

There are loads of fabrics in the market that are made for use in infant apparels. But generally, cotton is the fabric that is most commonly used as it is soft, absorbent and most importantly, gentle to the baby’s delicate skin. There is an organic option too. Spandex or cotton blends are said to provide the ultimate comfort for them.

With the constant movement and wiggling of a newborn, it would be ideal if they were wearing something that is stretchable, such as spandex, as the material can move along with your baby’s movements while keeping them all wrapped up. An example would be tights and baby leg warmers made from this stretchable fabric.

You might have considered that it’s too hot for use in Singapore but a micro fleece is perfect for travelling and use in air-conditioned places.

Clothes made from fleece dry quickly and they are warm and fuzzy too, making it the perfect material for a child’s outerwear, or an instant pillow or blanket on-the-go.

why read with your child?

Bond, explore and increase literacy by reading with your child.

eading with your child is not just a pre-school activity. As parents may well know, knowing the alphabets does not on its own lead to advanced reading ability. Readers have to recognise the context in which the text is written and the audience which the text is written for, sentence patterns and choice of words so that understanding of the text is possible. Like any other skill, reading requires constant practice. It needs to be frequent. Many parents know well enough that their children do not read. Telling their children to read does not lead to reading. Reading with their children leads to reading.

The reason that reading with children leads to reading is not just that reading can be fun and entertaining. It is the interactive aspect of reading together, when the parents start to understand why a child finds a piece of text worth his attention to look at (rather than simply agreeing or disagreeing why the child chooses a piece of text to look at) that reading becomes a bonding activity. It is a meaningful activity for the parent and child.

The teenager is often forgotten or neglected by their parents when it comes to reading. As soon as the young teen passes the PSLE, he is assumed to be ready to read independently. This is a myth. At a time when the teenager is forming a self-image and building self-esteem, and becoming a socially functional young adult, parents play a crucial role in keeping in touch with and understanding that process. Reading with your child (later teenager) allows you to know your child better which will lead you to be

better able to guide him in making life’s important choices. Through reading and then sharing of feelings and perspective, you will know his thoughts and understand them. This is a parent-child (parent-teen) bonding activity as critical as any other.

Progress to reading short pieces with pictures that he can relate to

The Golden Rule of Reading with your child The golden rule of reading with your child requires that he selects a piece of text that he is interested in to share with you. Interest is paramount. Do not judge.

No matter how similar the child is to the parent, he is a unique individual exploring who he is and may not hold the same interest as the parent. The piece of text he has chosen to share with you is an expression of that exploration. It is more interesting and beneficial to the parent and child for mum and dad to understand why he has chosen that piece of text than to judge him.

The Soviet Union launched the Sputnik I. Even though it did not carry scientific equipment, it was able to provide scientists with information about the upper atmosphere. The Soviets believed that the technology and launch of the rocket showcased their might at that time.

BLAST OFF!

While we sure do love our planet Earth, humans have always been curious about outer space and possible life forms in other parts of our magnificent universe. Let’s find out about some space explorations humans have planned and executed over the years!

The United States launched the V-2 rocket which carried with it fruit flies to explore the effects of radiation exposure at high altitudes.

The rocket reached an amazing 109km in altitude in three minutes and ten seconds!

Upon their return back to earth, scientists found that the fruit flies were still alive.

Able and Baker are both monkeys that were the first animals to have survived a space flight! Other primates who had reached space in earlier years had sadly not been able to survive their journeys.

Their flight was 16 minutes long and they were weightless for nine minutes!

28 May 1959: First animals to return to Earth safely after space flight – Monkeys Able and Baker.

12 Apr 1961: First human spaceflight – Yuri Gagarin.

Yuri Gagarin was the first human to be launched into outer space, and also the first to orbit Earth! After a host of animals were sent by various countries, it was time for humans to take the flight. Yuri’s Vostok spacecraft completed one orbit of the Earth successfully on 12 Apr 1961.

Apollo 11 was responsible for landing the first humans on the moon – Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The event was a momentous one for everyone around the world.

Armstrong described the event as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind”.

3 Feb 1995: First woman pilot of a space shuttle – Eileen Marie Collins.

The Discovery space shuttle that Eileen piloted also made history in other ways – it was also the first flight in a new Russian – American space programme! One of the crew members, Bernard A. Harris, Jr., also became the first African-American to walk in space.

Eileen later became the first woman space shuttle commander in 1999.

What is a space station?

A space station is used as a place where space research is conducted. It is built to be able to support a crew of people on board and stay in space for an extended period of time. It also allows other space crafts to dock and to send supplies or more human support whenever needed.

What is space like?

Vacuum: There is almost no air where the space stations are usually found, so astronauts need to wear special suits if they have to step outside of the space station.

However, the space stations themselves contain stored air that is enough for the astronauts’ survival.

Temperature: The temperature of the space stations can fluctuate a lot and very quickly as heat from the sun travels to the space stations by radiation! But the space stations are equipped to deal with this so that the astronauts can feel comfortable.

Weightless: If you’ve seen pictures of astronauts in space stations, you’d see that they are mostly floating about as if by magic!

This is because in space, the effect of the gravity we feel here on Earth is non-existent.

Get ready for the new school year with your own rocket pencil holder that you can admire when you get your homework done on your study desk!

Materials needed: $ Construction paper $ Plastic/paper cup $ Double-sided tape $ Scissors $ Glue $ Pen or pencil

STEP 2

STEP 1

Draw a large circle and two small triangles on a piece of construction paper and cut the shapes out. Cut the circle midway.

Fold one side of the triangle into a small rectangle.

Then, glue the rectangular side to the side of the plastic cup. Repeat step for the other triangle.

Form a cone with the circle cut-out and secure it to the cup with glue or doublesided tape.

Materials needed: $ Assorted acrylic jewels and decorations $ Paintbrush $ Paint $ Pipe cleaners $ Wiggly eyes $ Big and small pom-poms $ Paper plates $ Transparent plastic cup $ Stapler $ Craft glue $ Scissors or pen knife $ Pencil $ Hot glue gun (and glue sticks) *Adult supervision is advised

Staple two paper plates together and place an overturned plastic cup in the middle of it. Trace the rim of the cup to draw a circle. Paint your spaceship but remember to paint the centre circle black as this is the cockpit of your spaceship.

STEP 2

Glue the large pom-poms together and then the three small shimmer pom-poms.

Add on some wiggly eyes and some curly arms by coiling the pipe cleaners around a pencil.

Glue your completed alien to the black circle. Get *mummy or daddy to help you to cut a small rectangle at the bottom of the plastic cup so that your coins can go through.

Place the plastic cup over the alien and glue the rim to secure it.

Don’t forget to decorate it too!

DOMESTICATED CATS The Munchkin The Munchkins are very small in size and have extra short legs.

These energetic extroverts would play with you, other cats and even friendly dogs! These short-legged cats have appeared through history and the short legs are caused by a genetic mutation, achondroplasia. The Munchkin weighs approximately 2.3-4.1kg.

Cornish Rex They can start and stop their movement fast, turn quickly and jump high. The Cornish Rex is a sophisticated and elegant cat that has a curvy body and curly coat that feels incredibly soft to the touch. They are active cats who love humans and are pretty affectionate. You can even fall in love with its playful kitten-like behaviour as you play their favourite game, “Fetch and Catch�.

Singapura Cat The Singapura Cat, also known as Kucinta or Kuchinta, is one of the rarest cats in the world. Also known as “drain cats”, sightings of them started in Singapore in the 1960s and 1970s. They are small in size and have a distinctive coat with unique features, big ears and beautiful eyes. In fact, they are the smallest recognised breed in the Guinness Book of World Records and are highly sought after.

The Selkirk Rex cats are large and heavy-boned cats with naturally plush and loose curls. These curls makes them extremely huggable and resemble the classic teddy bear that you might have! They are very patient, loving and tolerant.
