PUBLISHER’S NOTE

SOME TRENDS SHOULD NEVER BE RESURRECTED I’m sure we all have those tried-and-sometimes-not-so-true beauty tricks we swore by in our younger years. For me, my go-to summer look was achieved by spraying a concoction of lemon juice and water in my hair, slathering Hawaiian Tropic dark tanning oil on myself, then laying out in my backyard in hopes of achieving that just-came-from-the-beach summer glow. If I felt fancy—and impatient—I’d spring for a bottle of Sun-In and spend an inordinate amount of time blow drying my hair for the perfect look. My skincare routine consisted of Noxema cleanser (who doesn’t love that refreshing scent?) and Sea Breeze astringent. Honestly, I’m not sure I really knew what an astringent was—just that it was supposed to combat acne, which was my number one concern as a teen. If you’d snapped open my Caboodle, you would have found all the other musthave beauty products of the '90s: Hard Candy nail polish, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, V05 hot oil treatments for my hair, Lee press-on nails, and my signature scent, Tommy Girl, which featured the perfect blend of floral, fruits, and musk. In hindsight, many of these products probably weren’t the best for my skin and hair … but that’s the fun of trends, right? You try them, you move on, and you hope no one posts on social media the cringeworthy photos of you from back then. We hope you enjoy this issue of SIMPLYkc Magazine, which is dedicated to all things beauty. May you find newer, safer, better beauty products and services to incorporate into your own daily life. And we’d love to know what your embarrassing teenage beauty routines consisted of—join the conversation on our facebook page at facebook.com/simplykcmagazine. Here’s to a fantastic summer!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Sara Knop

Who: What:

SARA KNOP Sara Knop wears a lot of hats. Beautiful hats, really. She is Kansas City’s beauty expert turned YouTube darling. Knop’s background as an aesthetician and Bar Method instructor fuels the YouTube channel “Beyond Skin Deep w/ Sara K” to empower women. In a world of filters, she centers on honesty and truth, bringing medical aesthetics, fitness, and motherhood into focus. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to begin a start-up with her husband called Rep Badges. Find Rep Badges at RepBadges.com.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE It's probably a tie between Enjoy and The Mixx. When I'm with my babies, we love to hit T. Loft and Whole Foods on the regular. I'm also a sucker for Taco Bell from time to time.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK At a live summer concert in the Crossroads District or any time of the year at The Uptown for a show. If I'm being fancy, then Parkway Social Kitchen on the Plaza is super fun!

FAVORITE SHOPPING Oh my gosh, Lululemon! I couldn't have been more thrilled when we got our first store here in Kansas City. I can always find something I love at Etiquette Boutique and Pink Antlers Studio at Park Place in Leawood as well. I love a great deal, so Nordstrom Rack and T.J. Maxx are also favorites for some good retail therapy.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS There’s an awesome speakeasy in Lee’s Summit called The W. They have exceptional artisan cocktails and an intimate setting. The Parker at the Fontaine is on the Plaza and they have my favorite brunch. I really love stopping by for a drink on date night.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS First Fridays in the Crossroads is always a hit. Barbecue is a must at Gate's Bar-B-Q, Joe's Kansas City, or Q39. Loose Park or Crown Center are also fun to stop through after lunch on the Plaza.

BEAUTY

A LITTLE LASH LOVE WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

No matter the season, the year, or the decade, something that never goes out of style is healthy, lush eyelashes. And not just on women. Yes, Kim Kardashian, Mila Kunis, and Megan Fox are standouts in the lash world, but Justin Theroux and Bradley Cooper rank right up there with them. We asked esthetics professor Malinda McHenry if it’s possible to achieve a more robust, healthy lash without spending a small fortune. McHenry has more than 32 years of experience in the beauty industry and is a practicing cosmetologist, aesthetician, instructor, published author, and speaker. She co-owns a full-service day spa, Bronzed N Beautiful, as well as The Academy of Advanced Aesthetic Arts, a post-graduate training center for licensed beauty professionals, both of which are located in Overland Park.

Apply some to a cotton pad and press against the lash line for 10 to 30 seconds, then gently move the pad in a downward motion. “Just be sure to follow with a makeup remover to clean off any that gets on your cheeks, because eye makeup remover can strip your skin of its natural oils,” adds McHenry.

Apply growth serums and conditioners at night. The regular use of conditioners will help your

There are a lot of these products on the market, but when dealing with such a delicate area as the eye, it’s best to buy only from licensed spas and facilities. McHenry's favorite lash conditioner, Mastic Beauty Oil, is available at Bronzed N Beautiful.

Whether music to your ears or a frightening prospect, going au naturel with your skin can do wonders for lash health, not to mention overall skin health. Another way to take a break from makeup is to consider lash extensions. “Just be ready to make the investment of time and money,” says McHenry. “When done right, they can be really great. But most women are surprised that a decent set costs about $250. And then you have to maintain them every couple of weeks.”

SALON PROVIDES TRANQUILITY FOR BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS WRITTEN BY SIMPLYkc STAFF / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Gena Reeves took 37 years of experience in the business of beauty and put it to work as owner of her new dream salon and spa. Tranquility Salon Suites located in Overland Park provides both its service providers and customers a luxurious and unique beauty experience in a relaxed, peaceful environment. Reeves’ passion is evident when you talk to her about her new salon, the culture she wants to create, and her vision for the space. The gorgeous chandeliers, the velvet furniture in the waiting area, and the one-of-akind glass art throughout the space set the stage for a great experience. mentary coffee or tea, and use the free wi-fi in the salon. Reeves is also passionate about supporting entrepreneurial hairstylists, estheticians, nail techs and other licensed service providers who rent suites at her salon. She is behind the chair working alongside her clients four days a week. Not only is the space designed for peo-

ple in any stage of their business, Reeves also offers business, finance, and marketing support. “My goal is to provide them with the education and tools they need to find their dream work-life balance,” says Reeves. “Whether they are renting a space for the first time or are coming to Tranquility from another rental situation, I am most fulfilled

when those around me succeed.” Reeves says her passion is through education and sharing the knowledge she has curated. Having been blessed with a long career in the beauty industry, nothing brings her more joy than to be able to share what she has learned with anyone who asks, and then to hear them say, “I tried what you taught me and it worked!” Although Reeves’ business is a suite rental salon, she hopes to have the camaraderie of a team salon. She plans to bring in the very best educators on a regular basis, starting with an upcoming event called Salon Sessions Live. At this event professional photographers, videographers, makeup artists, and stylists from all over come together to create before and after looks. These will be filmed and photographed to add to the stylists’ portfolios and enrich their online presence and marketing. Sierra Verdugo, nail artist at Tranquility Salon Suites, says, “What initially drew

me to Tranquility was the modern and updated look. Gena was an added bonus. She is genuinely interested in my business, continually finds new and innovative ways for me to grow, and is always available to assist.”

"Gena is genuinely interested in my business, continually finds new and innovative ways for me to grow, and is always available to assist."

Fellow stylist Jenni Banks adds, “I knew my clients would fall in love with it. I met Gena about nine years ago, and in addition to having a shared passion for the industry, I knew from our history she would be great with continuing education for stylists. She truly cares

about them and their success. I guarantee any stylist who steps into the beautiful, family-friendly atmosphere of this salon will know it’s the place they should be.” Reeves concludes, “I have to pinch myself when I go to work each day. I’ve traveled all over as an educator, national platform artist, director of education, salon consultant—you name it. But Tranquility Salon Suites is the final check mark on my career bucket list.” Reeves says she also wants to thank her family, as they have always been the driving force behind what she does. “I wanted my daughter Alex, who is a marketing professional and new mom, to see that a woman can work and provide for her family and be a mom. And for my son Mathew, an entrepreneur, recruiter, and artist, to learn a strong work ethic and to respect and appreciate strong women. Finally, my husband Larry and his children and grandchildren have completed my family with more love than I ever dreamed possible.”

Owner Gena Reeves' goal is to provide the education and tools entrepreneurs need to find their dream work-life balance

KACIE A MANICURE GONE WRONG My nails were destroyed after a gel manicure at a nail salon. They look like an animal gnawed on them. And they’re bleeding. Do I confront the nail tech?

You’re a picker, aren’t you? You picked off the gel polish, and in doing so you ripped your nail beds with it. Don’t blame the nail tech. Instead you should make an appointment with the nail tech to remove the gel polish. It’s not always convenient, and they’re going to talk you into another manicure because they’re holding your hand hostage. If you’d rather remove a gel manicure at home, soak a cotton ball with acetone and secure it with aluminum foil, then sit and wait. Stare at a wall and think about not picking your nails. Let the acetone dissolve the polish for a good ten minutes, maybe longer (everyone’s nails are different). Whatever you do, do not pick the polish off your nails! This isn’t helping you, is it? Since you already picked off your polish, try a nail protein, such as Nailitiques Formula 2 Nail Protein. Then wait for the nails to grow out. If you’re truly upset by the nail tech’s job, remember there’s no shortage of nail salons. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you aren’t satisfied and find a new nail tech.

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

THE CELLULITE CURE AT SLEEK PHYSIQUE WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Womanhood is amazing. Women’s bodies are able to build another human being. Your chances of living a long life increase if you’re a woman. But being a woman has its disadvantages, too. One of those disadvantages is cellulite. Cellulite affects both men and women, but between 80 and 90 percent of women experience cellulite while only about 10 percent of men experience it. There’s a natural way to erase cellulite, though, that doesn’t involve needles or cutting. Endermologie is a high-end spa treatment that is FDA-approved to remove cellulite. In recent years, it is even being used to smooth wrinkles on the face, neck, and décolletage. Cindy Baumann, owner of Sleek Physique, specializes in Endermologie treatments. Baumann was introduced to Endermologie first as a client. Baumann was an avid swimmer from a young age. But as she grew older, she became self-conscious of her changing skin and cellulite. She got to the point where she would wrap a towel around her waist while walking to and from the pool. One day she saw an ad for Endermologie and decided to try it. She was hooked and remained an Endermologie client for the next seven years.

"After my first treatment, half of my cellulite was gone. In addition to the cellulite reduction, I’ve noticed greater energy levels & less muscle pain." In 2005, Baumann turned her passion for Endermologie into a business. “I believe in this technology, and find greater fulfillment in providing Endermologie to others,” Baumann says. Baumann served the greater Kan-

sas City area for five years, landing at The Swanson Center in Leawood before getting married and moving to Arizona in 2010. After upgrading her Endermologie technology to the most advanced model available in the U.S., Baumann returned to her former home within The Swanson Center in April 2019, much to the delight of her former clients. Endermologie technology was developed in the 1970s. It works organically by increasing your own bodily processes. Your body is already circulating blood, your lymph is draining waste and toxins, and your skin is exfoliating itself. Endermologie optimizes these processes in a natural way to achieve aesthetic gains. THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN KANSAS CITY When you walk into Sleek Physique you fill out a medical questionnaire to rule out any contraindicating conditions. For body treatments, you also put on a full-length bodysuit. The suit serves two purposes: to keep the treatment head from sticking on and pinching your skin, and to provide you with some modesty. For facial treatments, Baumann removes your makeup. The whole process takes between 30 and 45 minutes and is non-invasive and painless. “Because this is an organic approach, you need a series to affect changes; and much like a haircut or manicure, you need maintenance in order to retain your new appearance,” explains Baumann. “Results vary; you might

need 16 to 20 treatments to reach a plateau, then one treatment per month thereafter.” Tracy Udell of Lenexa, Kansas, a client of Sleek Physique, says she found herself at 270 pounds on her 5 ft. 2 inch frame. “A lot of my weight was a result of side effects from medications," explains Udell. "I got off the medications and started working out and eating properly. Now I am a marathon runner and triathlete. I lost the weight slowly and with great results, but I still struggled with cellulite. After my first treatment, half of my cellulite was gone. In addition to the cellulite reduction, I’ve noticed greater energy levels and less muscle pain.” While most of Baumann’s clients come to her for aesthetic reasons, some see her for help with other issues, too. Karen Ubank from St. Joseph, Missouri, needed scar tissue relief. “I was in a bad car wreck four years ago. Due to scar tissue build-up, I was having a lot of trouble with range of motion, stiffness, shoulder pain, and lower back pain,” says Ubank. “I signed up for 20 treatments. The treatments have helped tremendously in giving me greater range of motion, relief with pain and scar tissue, and helped me feel better.” Summer is coming. Make your appointment today.

THERE'S A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT COLORECTAL CANCER WRITTEN BY DAVID MARKS

Colorectal cancer is now the third most common cancer in the United States, and the second most common cause of cancer deaths.

aren't any noticeable symptoms with colon cancer. “However, there are some signs that should prompt an evaluation,” explains Cravens “These include a significant change in your bowel habits, blood in the stool, dark/tarry stools, or unexplained weight loss.” Finding cancer early, when it's small and hasn't spread, often allows for more treatment options. Regular screening can even prevent colorectal cancer. A polyp can take as many as 10 to 15 years to develop into cancer. With screening, doctors can find and remove polyps before they have the chance to turn into cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 100,000 new cases of colon cancer and 40,000 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed this year in the U.S. Of course, one of the first elements of awareness is to understand more about the basics of colorectal cancer. This is a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in the tissues of the colon or rectum. The inner lining of the colon can be a fertile breeding ground for small tumors, called polyps.

cancer in the United States is about 5 percent,” says Jeremy Cravens, MD, Colon & Rectal Surgery, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “But our risk increases as we age, significantly increasing between ages 40 and 50.” While the exact cause of colorectal cancer is not known, there are several risk factors for the disease.

About a quarter of all adults in the U.S. will have at least one colorectal polyp. While most of these polyps are benign, at least one type is known to be precancerous.

“A family history of colon cancer or precancerous polyps is probably the most important risk factor for most people,” says Cravens. “Lifestyle-oriented factors such as obesity, tobacco and alcohol use, diabetes, consumption of processed meats, and lack of physical activity are thought to play a role as well.”

“The lifetime risk of developing colon

“There are many ways to detect colon cancer,” says Cravens, “from laboratory tests of the stool to X-ray tests to colonoscopy. The appropriate test is usually determined by the patient’s age and possible symptoms. An abnormality on any test should prompt a colonoscopy, which is the best way to make a definitive diagnosis.” When colorectal cancer is found at an early stage before it has spread, the five-year relative survival rate is about 90 percent. Unfortunately, many of those who should get tested for colorectal cancer have never been screened. This may be because they don’t know that regular testing can save lives, or due to things like cost and health insurance coverage issues. Even worse, many people delay seeking medical care because they are embarrassed or fearful of symptoms related to their bowels. Treatments for colorectal cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, radia-

The Stages of Colon Cancer:

Being better informed about colorectal cancer can help you take better control of your health. Maintaining healthy eating and exercise habits can help prevent colon cancer. Drinking in moderation and refraining from smoking are also helpful preventive approaches.

•S tage 0: Colon cancer is very limited. The cancer is confined to just the outer layer (mucosa) of the colon wall.

As Kansas City’s only affiliate of MD Anderson Cancer Network®, a program supported by MD Anderson Cancer Center, AdventHealth is raising the standard of cancer care, providing therapies, technology, and clinical expertise aligned with MD Anderson evidence-based treatment guidelines. For more information about AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission, visit AHigherStandard.com.

As with most types of cancer, colon cancer is broken down into different stages:

•S tage I: Colon cancer is slightly more advanced, still confined to the colon wall. It may have spread to the underlying muscle layer. Stage 1 cancer has a 90 percent survival rate in five years. •S tage II: Colon cancer has broken through the colon wall, but hasn’t spread to nearby organs. • Stage III: Colon cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. •S tage IV: Colon cancer has spread through the colon wall to one or more nearby organs, such as the lungs, liver, ovaries, and lymph nodes.

Since 2008, Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens doubles as the picturesque backdrop for Stems: A Garden Soireé. Over the years the positive response from the community has grown.

environmental and ecological issues, The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a year-round destination with a wide variety of experiences, seasonal programs, and events for all ages,” says Lane. Lane explains that Stems feels like a great escape. “It’s a low-pressure event, where the only decisions you have to make are which food station to visit next or which wine to try. It’s in the most beautiful setting in the KC metro, and you have a chance to wander the gardens in a way you’ve

never done before. Plus, you have the knowledge your participation is doing good for arts and recreation in Overland Park.” Lane's favorite part of the event is meandering through the gardens and pathways with a cold glass of white wine. She also enjoys listening to the music, the chirping crickets, and meeting new people. Ivani Bing, television personality for KCPT and contributor for FOX 4, says, “I really love Stems. It’s so magical. Upon arrival you are greeted with a hand-painted wine glass, and you disappear along the arboretum path into a magical food happy land. Plus the views are to die for. When the sun sets it’s so beautiful, and the firework show at the end of the night is like the icing on the cake. I go to many events like this every year and this is among my favorites.”

The Arboretum is special to Alex Esposito Burton and her family, attendees of the event. They have a tradition of going to the Luminary Walk in the winter, so going to the summer event is a change but still as magical. Burton says, “What makes Stems unique is that it’s all outside, which is exactly where I want to be that time of year. It’s kind of like a walking party, because you stop along the garden paths at booths for food and drinks all from well-known local places.” Burton explains that once you get to the main party area, there’s live music, dancing, and even more food and drinks. “The whole thing is topped off with a big fireworks show, which is my favorite part. It’s a really beautiful and fun night that supports a place that means a lot to so many people,” says Burton.

their new campaign “Growing to Inspire,” which will improve 38 acres of the Arboretum. You can get involved by becoming a sponsor, a volunteer, or just by attending. The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park has a small staff, so they welcome more than 120 volunteers to make this event possible. Lane explains, “Our dedicated crew of volunteers have pride and commitment to making this the best event it can be. Our sponsors know they are giving back to the community in a meaningful way. Our attendees know they are having fun and doing good by purchasing tickets for the event.” They are still accepting volunteers. You can find more information about this event and how to get involved on their website.

PARENTING

PARENTAL MELTDOWN:

HOW TO CO-PARENT EFFECTIVELY WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

Parenting can

be joyful, fulfilling, frustrating, stressful, and at times even scary; the emotions are almost endless. Perhaps one of the biggest challenges for some parents, though, is co-parenting. At times parents may be so at odds on their stances that their union is tested, sometimes to the point of breaking. “Regardless of if the parents are divorced or married, you have the constant conflict between love and comfort, and the structure, which means boundaries and rules,” notes Terri Dichiser, owner of Take Charge Inc. in Overland Park, Kansas, and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). “In our family therapy sessions, we work to establish that comfort is provided first and then the parental unit provides structure, because you need both,” explains Dichiser. “Think of it in a job setting structure. If you have a boss that simply provides structure and rules but doesn’t appear to care about the employee, that is not a good situation. Neither is it in a family. It’s confusing for the parents.” Those of us born before the 2000s

probably grew up with a more traditional parental role, although many family units were double-income families by that point. Typically one parent emerged as the provider and one the caretaker. Now, however, it is as easily the dad who is the primary caregiver, or both parents are spending equal time at work and home. Another stressor today is the makeup of the modern family. More likely than not, there are step-children and multiple parenting units involved in a child’s life. “Of course, it’s hard from the perspective of the person coming in because you don’t have the history or the relationship and yet you are in a parental role with that child,” advises Dichiser. “This makes it difficult to accomplish anything. While we can’t make history ‘appear,’ we can work toward helping the person build the relationship with the children and then work into the parental role.” She also notes that the children have experienced the loss of the relationship of their parents being married, and now are being asked to welcome someone new into the mix. So the situation is difficult for the parent, the continued on page 34

PARENTING CONT. stepparent, and the kids. Families deal with many areas of conflict when co-parenting children. Some of these include: • • • • •

Discipline Nutrition & Diet Safety Education/Grades Socialization

• Talk to each other proactively about how you want to parent (and listen to each other). • Avoid the “good cop/bad cop” routine. Kids need to know their parents have the same expectations of them. • Do not contradict each other’s discipline in front of the children.

Dichiser points out that social media can also be an added negative in the way it creates disconnection, causing parents to say “no phones at dinner” or “no phones this evening.” A united front is what parents should strive for to best provide for their children. Why not agree to disagree? Kids are very quick to learn how to play parents off of each other. Instead, try the following:

• Split up parenting duties based on each other’s strengths. It’s okay for one parent to be the one who runs point on playdate, sleepovers, and schedule coordination. It’s also okay for one parent to set up a nutrition and health plan for the family. The key is to support each other and make sure the children know you have agreed together to handle things this way. • Don’t fight in front of the kids. Don’t be condescending to each other, or do anything hurtful that would show your kids there is a lack of

respect for one another. You are teaching them in your actions how to respond to key figures in their lives, for the rest of their lives. • Don’t play favorites. • Learn from your mistakes. •L ove each other and your children, and make sure it is obvious in your home every single day. “The number one thing children say in our counseling sessions is that they want to be seen and understood by their parents,” says Dichiser. “In a well-functioning family unit, everyone feels safe and sure with their emotions and expressing them. They understand there are boundaries and guidelines, but the key is everyone feels safe and understood.”

BRACING FOR THE FUTURE:

BULLEIGH ORTHODONTICS WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

In 2005, Dr. Chad A. Bulleigh opened his first practice in Shawnee, Kansas. Today, Bulleigh Orthodontics proudly serves Johnson County with three locations—Shawnee, North Overland Park, and South Overland Park. Dr. Bulleigh brought on Dr. Kristen Sander in 2016 and together they created a shared vision: To enhance the lives of patients by creating beautiful smiles and improving facial aesthetics. If visiting the dentist or orthodontist makes you nervous, Bulleigh Orthodontics is able to help. They offer free consultations in an inviting, warm atmosphere, which the team believes is a key point of difference from their competition. “I just had a patient tell us she went for multiple consultations, and the

reason she chose our organization is we felt like ‘home’—from the front desk to assistants to the doctors, we make our patients feel important and special. We believe in creating and maintaining a culture of caring,” says Ashley Duxbury, who handles the company’s marketing. Sommer Saunders, a customer of

Bulleigh Orthodontics, says, “The entire team is fabulous! Some of the staff even knew me when I called. They did a fabulous job with my smile and my daughter’s smile. The team is very patient and understanding of what the client wants. I highly recommend them, and I will be returning for my two other children!”

Bulleigh Orthodontics is diligent about staying on top of emerging technology as well. For instance, the Invisalign process that straightens your teeth by using clear aligners recently received an upgrade in equipment: an I-tero scanner.

"They did a fabulous job with my smile and my daughter’s smile. I highly recommend them, and I will be returning for my two other children!" “The I-tero scanner provides 3-D computer graphics. Now there is no need for goopy, yucky impressions having to be made. This new machine makes the Invisalign process a breeze and our patients love it,” enthuses Duxbury. The practice also tries to make a beautiful smile affordable to all. In addition to taking most insurance, they also offer financing with low monthly payments for those who need it. Some people wonder when the right time is to see an orthodontist. Experts maintain that there is, in fact, an optimal time. According to The American Association of Orthodontists, the initial evaluation should occur as early as the age of seven or at the first sign of

Bulleigh Orthodontics offers treatment to individuals of all ages because it is never too late for a beautiful smile! The types of braces offered include: Metal braces. The most common type of braces, these are made of high-grade stainless steel. Today’s metal braces are smaller, more comfortable and more attractive than they used to be.

Dr. Bulleigh also volunteers with many charitable and civic organizations, such as Smiles Change Lives Community Orthodontic Program, Operation Smile, the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and the Dental Public Health Children Outreach Program.

Clear braces. Clear ceramic braces are made of a translucent material and are popular among patients of all ages due to their cosmetic appeal. Gold braces. Bling it up with some metallic color! These braces are made of steel and coated with 24-karat gold. Damon braces. They can also reduce treatment time and the number of visits necessary to achieve success. Invisalign. This type of treatment is a system of clear overlay templates, called aligners. The aligners are generated by computer simulation and gradually move the teeth. This system is a great choice for teens and adults, but can be implemented at any age. The company’s commitment does not stop with its clients. The Bulleigh Orthodontics team also believes in supporting the community. BECAUSE I SAID SO...

A HAIRY SITUATION WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

I love having code words to get men out the room. Feminine hygiene products ... see ya, men! Just us ladies now? Cool. Even if I know how to get them out of the room, though, I don’t understand their minds. I thought I knew Scott; I've known the guy for 17 years. With Scott, the answer is always yes or no. He knows what he likes. He's messy and unorganized. He's athletic. He takes pride in opening a jar of spaghetti sauce, but he's not cocky. He loves making others feel better about themselves. He never expects a thank you. And, like all men, he likes pretty women. He's also turned off when a woman doesn't shave her legs or her armpits.

Hairy toes? Turn-off. Nose hair? Turnoff. Hairy face? He asks why a woman would shave her face. Scott has a problem with a woman shaving her face. I believe I'm correct when I say most men only like hair on a woman’s head. But Scott threw me for a loop and decided he likes silky smooth legs, soft skin ... and a hairy face. I shaved my face anyway, but he hasn’t noticed. My face looks better. It's not that I have a hairy face. I'm half Mexican but I have a white face and body. I have dark hair, but the majority of my hair is on the top of my head. I don't need to shave my face. I don't have a mustache or even a single chin hair. Shaving your face is the new thing to do. Every woman has peach fuzz. If you remove the fuzz with short little strokes using a women’s facial razor

(not our normal leg razor or a men’s facial razor) it exfoliates your face. It also makes it easier for moisturizer to absorb and allows makeup to go on better. There's my new beauty secret. Just don't tell Scott. I don’t know how a man's mind works, but I do know a few women’s secrets. Like how we go days—weeks even— without washing a bra. And how we drink our wine with the dead fruit fly in it because that’s what the fruit fly deserves. Oh! We love to scrub the dandruff off our scalps before we get in the shower, really digging in with our fingernails. And we waddle around with toilet paper until we find a feminine hygiene product. The men are still here, aren't they? Well that's what you get for eavesdropping. Women are just as gross as men.

SKINCARE STEPS YOU SHOULD NEVER SKIP

1 Wash it all off. No product will absorb unless you’ve

removed all the dirt and dead skin cells. Dermatologists recommend using gentle cream or balm cleansers that can really be worked into your skin—don’t rely on foaming washes or face wipes.

2 E xfoliate every few days. Don’t exfoliate every

day, as it can dry out your skin and reduce your skin barrier. Try one with alpha or beta hydroxy acid. This will cut through the gunk of the day quickly and exfoliate gently.

3 Swipe on a toner. Toners help the rest of your

skincare routine work more effectively and penetrate deeper into your skin. If you’re worried about over-drying, opt for solutions with calming, anti-inflammatory ingredients—like vitamin E or aloe—instead of one with alcohol.

4 Use a serum. Serums add extra moisture and

wrinkle-fighting ingredients. Vitamin C serums are popular because they help ward off environmental

toxins and UV damage. Apply this after cleansing and before moisturizing.

5 M oisturize. Day or night, you need a moisturizer. It

locks the moisture into your skin, giving you a dewy, healthy look. This can be any drugstore moisturizer, one with sunscreen (SPF 30) for the day, and one with retinol for night. Retinol helps unclog pores and stimulates collagen production, helping your skin keep its elasticity.

6 R epair with retinol. Retinol regulates everything

from cell turnover (good for both antiaging and breakouts) to the production of collagen and elastin. But it can initially leave skin red or reactive, so go gently, using it once a week, and build it up.

7 Don’t forget your neck and décolletage. The skin

here is incredibly fragile and shows aging much faster than your face. Use your antiaging cream of choice to slather on your neck and chest too, or invest in a cream made especially for this area.

SUMMER SKIN

ously applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 30, every day—even on cloudy days. Broad-spectrum provides protection from both ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which mostly cause sunburns, and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply and are associated with wrinkling, leathering, and sagging. Also, make sure to buy a new bottle of sunscreen every summer, because sunscreen expires after 12 months.

5 TIPS FOR HEALTHY, GLOWING SUMMERTIME SKIN WRITTEN BY ASHLEY PUDERBAUGH

Your skincare routine should change with the seasons. Shifts in humidity, blasts of air-conditioning, and brighter, longer days should all be factors you consider when caring for your skin. Follow these simple warm-weather tips for a beautiful, healthy glow this summer. Limit Your Time in the Sun You do need vitamin D, but you definitely do not need sun dam-

age. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 3 pm, so if possible try to minimize your exposure during those times. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that if your shadow appears to be shorter than you are, you should seek shade. However, with the kids out of school and vacations just around the corner, remaining indoors during these peak daytime hours will be difficult. If you have to be outside, make sure to wear sun-protective clothing and sunscreen.

Finally, when applying sunscreen use approximately an ounce to cover your body; more if you’re bigger, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. “Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin,” says the foundation. “Reapplication of sunscreen is just as important as putting it on in the first place, so reapply the same amount every two hours. Sunscreens should be reapplied immediately after swimming, toweling off, or sweating a great deal.”

Everyone knows that too much exposure to sun puts you at risk for all skin cancers, including melanoma. In fact, more than 2 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, according to the AAD.

Protective clothing also plays a major role in sun protection. The Federal Trade Commission maintains an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating for sun-protective clothing. These fabrics typically have a tighter weave or knit and usually are darker in color. The higher the UPF, the higher the UV protection. For example, a UPF between 15 and 24 provides “good UV protection,” UPF between 25 and 39 provides “very good UV protection,” and UPF between 40 and 50 provides “excellent UV protection.”

The good news is that you can reduce your risk factor for skin cancer by learning how to be “sun smart,” says the AAD. This includes gener-

Don’t forget about your eyes, which are extremely sensitive to the sun. Always choose sunglasses that offer UV protection.

SUMMER SKIN CONT.

Get a Sun-Kissed Look the Healthy Way Self-tanners and spray tans have come a long way. Once destined to leave your skin a streaky, orange-tinted mess, quality fake-tan products have become more widely available—and more affordable. If you choose the self-tanner route, look for a fragrance-free formulation that incorporates alpha hydroxy acids for better penetration. Alternate your regular face moisturizer and a self-tanner every other night for a natural glow. When you’re using the self-tanner on your body, avoiding elbows, knees, and heels will prevent unevenness in the folds and make the tanner look natural.

Spray- or airbrush-tanning formulas usually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which has been approved by the FDA as safe for all skin types. DHA does not cause wrinkles or cancer. But remember that your spray tan doesn’t double as sunscreen, so if you get this done, lather on the sunscreen when you head outdoors.

Use the Best Skincare Products You probably already have a skincare routine for morning and night. But the AAD suggests you add sunscreen and products containing antioxidants for daytime wear. At night, try products containing retinoids, peptides, or growth factors for their repair properties.

Bare All

“Check your birthday suit on your birthday,” says the AAD. “If you notice anything changing, growing, or bleeding on your skin, see a dermatologist.” The association recommends you also check your skin regularly for changes, and screen the one you love for skin cancer. “Recent research shows that involving a partner in the skin self-examination process can improve the early detection of skin cancer. Give the gift of life and health by screening your loved ones on popular holidays.”

GOOD TASTES Watermelon Mint Sorbet SERVES 6 TO 8

Ingredients 1/2 cup lime juice 1/2 cup water

SORBETS:

GLORIFIED ADULT SNOWCONES WRITTEN & PHOTO BY SAMANTHA LEVI

1/2 cup coconut sugar 1 medium-sized watermelon (about 4 cups) 1/4 cup mint leaves

Directions

In a saucepan bring the lime juice, water, and coconut sugar to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Set this simple syrup mixture aside to cool. Chop up the watermelon into small pieces and place in the blender. Process until smooth. Add mint leaves and simple syrup mixture to blender with the watermelon and process until the mint leaves appear to be well-blended. Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 6 to 8 hours or until firm. Remove sorbet from the freezer 5 minutes before eating.

Mixed Berry Malbec Granita SERVES 6 TO 8

Ingredients 1 cup orange juice 1/3 cup coconut sugar 2 cups Malbec* 2 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries)

Directions

In a saucepan, bring the orange juice and coconut sugar to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Set it aside to cool.

I stumbled upon making my own sorbets last summer when I was looking for a dairy-free cold dessert in my recipe book. I was craving a refreshing treat that contained natural ingredients I already had in my kitchen. The beauty of sorbets is how simple they are. You can add or subtract to the recipes as you see fit, but the base is just water and fruit. The fun is what you can dream up from there.

Add the Malbec, berries, and the sugar and orange juice to the blender. Process until well-blended. Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 6 to 8 hours or until firm. Remove sorbet from the freezer 5 minutes before eating. * Because I did not cook the wine, this should be served to those 21 and older. Also, alcohol slows the freezing process. Adding liqueurs will result in a softer product, which will melt faster.

Farm-raised and city-approved, Samantha Levi grabs inventive and adventurous style when cooking up the goods. A little of this, a little of that. She believes it’s about the art, not the science. And she loves putting her own flair on any recipe that crosses her path.

HOME example, if a room has an 8-foot ceiling, you should space your recessed lights approximately 4 feet apart for even coverage. The Fun Stuff! Here is where you really get to show off your style. Ceiling pendants generally can be broken down into two categories. First, larger multi-light chandeliers light larger areas like an entryway, family room, or breakfast area. If you are going to spend some money, this is where you want to do it. There may be only a couple of these fixtures in your home, so they need to be the anchors that set the tone for the rest of your lighting choices. Find something you love and go for it!

5 TYPES OF LIGHTING TO MAKE YOUR HOME SHINE WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER

Little does as much as lighting to make a dramatic change in the look of your home. When done right, it can set just the right atmosphere, with relatively little work involved. That said, a lot of planning is necessary to make sure you get it right. And for that, a good designer is critical. We recently talked with Chelsey Becker, the owner of Designer Dwell Interiors in Downtown Overland Park, for some tips on getting started. “When thinking about lighting, whether for a new home or a remodel, it is always best to start with a plan,” Becker says. “Creating a

lighting plan is the best way to determine your wants and needs for any particular space. Putting fixtures on paper allows you and your designer to balance the placement of your fixtures and will help identify areas that need more attention.” You can look to Pinterest and other online spots for inspiration. Get ideas from friends’ and relatives’ houses. Next time you’re at the museum, notice all the different ways the rooms and artwork are lit—there are reasons why museums award coveted lighting design awards to lighting specialists. Another tip from Becker: “I encourage my clients to think of lighting in layers. A good lighting plan has multiple layers of light that come together to make a comfortable and functional living space.” Check out Becker’s five types of lighting to consider for glowing results. The Foundation. Recessed or can lights are the most basic fixtures— and the basis for most lighting plans. As a general rule, divide the height of the ceiling by two. For

The second ceiling pendant category is more task-oriented but should not be underestimated. Smaller, more focused pendant lights are used to light areas like a kitchen island or smaller work space. These should be used in conjunction with can lights to adequately light a space. Softer Layers. Sconces and indirect lighting add interest and ambiance to a room. Use LED tape to accent the interior of cabinets and ceiling features or sconces to wash an accent wall with soft light in a stairwell or entryway. Art Lighting (It’s an art!). In today’s open floor plans, wall space is at a minimum. This is your chance to really draw attention to the few places in your home that can display your most recent Plaza Art Fair purchase, family portrait, or Humanitarian award. Most people miss this, but here is where you can set yourself apart. Use directional cans or art lights to draw attention to the things that make you smile. Lamp Lighting. Finally, accessorize with lamps. There is nothing quite as welcoming and comforting as lamp lighting. Use a floor lamp near a window to substitute for natural daylight, and add table lamps on an entryway table, in the family room, and in bedrooms for a soft, comforting glow.
