PUBLISHER’S NOTE

BRING ON THE GOOD TIMES Finally! We’ve made it to one of my favorite months. I think one of the reasons I look forward to May is because it’s always packed full of fun events: Memorial Day, graduations and festivals, my son’s birthday … and warmer weather! The pools open and summer baseball ramps up. I’m eager to watch both the Royals and my son’s team. But probably the most important event of all? Definitely Mother’s Day. Our Mother’s Day typically involves brunch and shopping, but sometimes we deviate from the routine. Writer Julie Burton compiled five Mother’s Day events happening in Kansas City that sound pretty interesting — yoga with goats, a Broadway musical, a 5K run, and more. Flip to page 18 for the details. A couple years ago, my daughter Addison and I ran the Mother’s Day 5K with a group of her friends and their moms. I like to run. But my daughter? Not so much. Needless to say, we’ve never signed up for the race since, but we both still had a great time together! From everyone here at SIMPLYkc Magazine, we wish you all a relaxing Mother’s Day.

WHAT, WHERE Meet Cindy Augustine Who:

What:

CINDY AUGUSTINE “I am afraid if I slow down, I may just stop completely and not be able to gear back up.” That’s what Cindy often says to people when they comment on how many things the entrepreneur has on her plate. Most people know her as the founder of Kazoo Media, a boutique ad agency. Most recently, she’s embarked on a second business venture as a co-owner of The Havana Room, a new event space in the heart of the Crossroads Arts District. She also helps develop and manage two commercial properties. But these projects will never replace time with her family. She and her husband Matt also have an 18-month-old, Gunner, who keeps her on her toes every night and weekend.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN KC

Food is my weakness, so, for me, it just comes down to my mood. My go-to is Grinders. The pizza, Philly, and mushrooms are so cravable. And with its great outdoor space, Grinders is a must when the weather is nice. Beyond that, anyone who knows me knows I could also have Mexican food three times a week. For that, I’ve been hitting up Mission Taco. And if I need a quick fix for lunch, I’m lucky to have Los Alamos just down the block — truly authentic Mexican goodness. And, finally, if I’m feeling fancy, we head to Anthony’s for a little oldschool KC Italian feel.

FAVORITE DRINK IN KC

Venture to North Kansas City for Repeal 38 and Restless Spirits Distilling. Both are amazing options for specialty and old-school cocktails. In Midtown, Julep and Hi-Dive are at the top of my list. Julep offers a fun whiskey tasting, and Hi-Dive is just that — a chill, divey bar with great drinks, service, and food.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP IN KC

I live and work in the Westside neighborhood, so I like to go to Westside Storey, featuring local T-shirts, some vintage goods, and gifts. Recently, I found a store in Manhattan, Kansas, called Bling, and I was thrilled to find out there’s a location in Overland Park. Bling has super-cute clothes and accessories at really affordable prices. And I’ve recently rekindled a love for Anthropolgie on the Plaza. I should limit my trips there because I always want their amazing outfits.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS IN KC

The Westside neighborhood, just west of downtown. It really does have a little bit of everything. If you need retail therapy, you should check out Madi Apparel. Have lunch or dinner at Westside Local, then finish your adventure with a crepe and wine at Chez Elle. And, make sure to hit up Swoon for a sweet treat, too — the sugar cookies are to die for.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS

My family loved Chicken N Pickle last time they were in town. The food was great, and the kids could play all the yard games while the adults hung outside with good drinks. If my husband is in charge of the kids’ entertainment, then it’s a trip to Power Play. Go-karts, arcade games, and a buffet. Need I say more? For adults-only outings, I have TikiCat or Offkey on the agenda. Tropical cocktails followed by karaoke — I suggest reservations for both!

urinate, see your doctor. These symptoms may signal ovarian cancer, particularly if they’re severe and frequent. When caught early, before cancer has spread outside the ovary, the relative five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is an amazing 90% to 95%.

WOMEN SHOULD ASK ABOUT BREAST DENSITY Women whose mammograms have revealed breast density readings of 75% or more have a breast cancer risk four to five times higher than that of women with low-density scores, according to recent research.

Let’s start with some good news. Many known causes of cancers are avoidable and related to your lifestyle. In fact, reducing your risk for cancer may be easier than you think. Sometimes it requires little more than a few lifestyle changes to make all the difference in the world. Sure, people can still get cancer even though they do all the right things, but research shows nearly half of all cancers are linked to avoidable factors we can control. “Of course, diet, exercise, and avoiding tobacco products are your first line of defense,” says Tracy Miles, DO, hematology and medical oncology, Shawnee Mission Health. “But there are many small, surprising ways you can weave even more disease prevention into your everyday life.”

KEEP A HEALTHY WEIGHT Being overweight or obese is related to as many as one in five cancerrelated deaths. You’re overweight if your body mass index is between 25 and 29.9; you’re obese if it’s 30 or more. Weight in the belly is most closely connected with an increased risk of colorectal cancer and cancers of the pancreas, uterus, and breast

BURN OFF YOUR RISK Moderate exercise such as brisk walking two hours a week cuts the risk of breast cancer by 18%. Regular workouts may lower your risks by helping you burn fat, which otherwise produces its own estrogen, a known contributor to breast cancer. in postmenopausal women. Other cancers associated with obesity include esophageal, rectal, kidney, thyroid, gallbladder, liver, ovarian, and prostate. Physical activity counts, too. In addition to helping you control your weight, physical activity on its own might lower the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer.

GET REGULAR MEDICAL CARE Regular self-exams and screenings for various types of cancer — such as cancer of the skin, colon, cervix, and breast — can increase your chances of discovering cancer early, when treatment is most likely to be successful. Ask your doctor about the best cancer-screening schedule for you. As Kansas City’s only affiliate of

WATER DOWN YOUR RISK

Drinking plenty of water and other liquids may reduce the risk of bladder cancer by diluting the concentration of cancer-causing agents in urine and helping to flush them through the bladder faster. The American Cancer Society suggests drinking at least eight cups of liquids a day.

AROUND TOWN

Written by Julie Burton

A MOTHER’S DAY IN KANSAS CITY A Chinese proverb says, “There is only one beautiful child in the world and every mother has it.” And every mother is lucky to have you. Mother’s Day is a celebration of women — the mothers who graduated to grandmothers, daughters, sisters, your neighborhood mom-village, step-mothers, mothers-in-law, mothers in heaven, and mothers on earth. Mothers surround us. May 13th is the day to honor the ones with the beautiful children.

Moms, daughters, girlfriends, and grandmothers are encouraged to celebrate the holiday by running or walking together. Strollers are welcome. The men and boys are welcome too, as long as they play cheerleader on the sidelines to their favorite women. Participants will receive a T-shirt, finisher charms, and snacks at the finish line. The course is decorated with motherly advice posts, or “mom-isms,” to keep everyone going. Mama always said a little exercise wouldn’t hurt, right?

We compiled some memorable places in Kansas City to take your mom this Mother’s Day.

SHOPPING AT GILDED LILY

MOTHER’S DAY 5K

If your mom is a shopper — and, really, what mother isn’t? — take her to one of KC’s most unique shopping experiences: Gilded Lily. Located in Martin City, Gilded Lily was originally a private home built in 1905. Now, the space is the home of new and vintage gifts, furniture, clothing, accessories, and creative home décor, all for purchase. Gilded Lily brings in four local merchants to satisfy a range of shopping tastes. Explore the home’s kitchen, sunroom, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Even the closets and stairwells are filled with trinkets that will surely catch a good shopper’s eye.

Corporate Woods, Overland Park kcexpress.org Wake up bright and early with mom to get in a 5K run before brunch. It’s KC’s only race by women and for women — The Mother’s Day 5K

To make the weekend extra special, Gilded Lily also offers afternoon tea parties. For a small charge, sip a range of teas with mom followed by a tray of sweets and savories. There’s an option to add cham-

pagne and sherry as well. Learn about tea etiquette, customs, and the history of tea. And you might even learn a little bit of Kansas’ history, too.

DISNEY’S ‘THE LION KING’

Kansas City Music Hall, Kansas City lionking.com Hakuna matata! Sit back and have “no worries” this Mother’s Day. From May 9 to 27, Disney’s “The Lion King” will be live at Kansas City Music Hall. This traveling Broadway show is the winner of six Tony Awards, including best musical. Its theatrical storytelling is a far cry from the animated movie. The show is Broadway’s third longest-running show, entertaining more than 90 million people worldwide. It’s the perfect blend of music and art with the use of more than 200 puppets and actors, including 18-foot giraffes, leaping gazelles, and soaring birds. It’s a show you can’t miss with mom (ok, dad and kids, too).

GOAT YOGA

Paradise Park, Lee’s Summit paradise-park.com Relax with the power of yoga in the peaceful serenity of the great outdoors with mom … and baby goats?! Yes, Paradise Park is hosting Goat Yoga thanks to a partnership with Core Balance Yoga and Sunset Stables. This Mother’s Day, say namaste while baby goats get affectionately curious with your human tabletop pose. Goats less than a year old are allowed to climb and nuzzle you as you go through a beginners’ course of yoga outdoors. They add a playful element

that takes yoga to a new level of relaxation. If yoga is about breathing, then goat yoga is all about laughing. The combination is sure to send you and your mom home smiling.

KACIE HOW TO BE CONFIDENT DURING SWIMSUIT SEASON

It’s going to be summer soon and my kids love going to the pool. I want to go with them but I am so self-conscious about my body in a swimsuit. Should I skip out? I want to have fun memories with them, but cannot get past this!

No one is so self-confident that they love every part of their body. Well, at least no one I know! There are so many cute swimwear options now: Long sarong skirts, full-coverage suits, etc. If you have one part of your body that you’re proud of — perhaps you have great legs, toned arms, or sexy curves — wear something that accentuates that area. Also, it’s worth it to invest in a great swimsuit. Many swimwear boutiques will custom fit your body and give you options that best flatter you. Don’t miss out on fun activities with your kids. Odds are, you’re being way more critical on yourself then anyone else would. Have a great summer and enjoy this time with your children!

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to our managing editor at: ashley@simplykcmag.com.

BEAUTY

Written by Deborah Eakin Osborne

COMMON DIY BEAUTY TREATMENTS NOT TO TRY AT HOME Getting the skinny on DIY beauty treatments can be more than a little confusing. For every yay you hear, you’ll likely hear a nay as well. Here are some of the more common “all-natural” skin treatments that may not be that great for you after all.

Recommendation: If you decide to use lemon juice despite the potential risks, first dilute it with water rather than using it full-strength, and avoid the sun for the rest of the day.

Witch hazel Witch hazel comes from the bark and leaves of a tree and is a natural anti-inflammatory commonly found in DIY astringents. Unfortunately, most people are not aware that witch hazel is usually distilled with alcohol that can wreak havoc on the skin’s hydrating layer, leaving your skin dry and flaky. While WebMD deems witch hazel “likely safe” for most adults when applied directly to the skin, it also cautions that some people may experience minor skin irritation.

Toothpaste A common DIY go-to during the acne-prone years, some adults continue to reach for toothpaste because of its temporary anti-inflammatory ability. The caution here is that peroxide, baking soda, and menthol — common ingredients found in many brands of toothpaste — are actually inflammatory and can eventually result in irritation to your skin and possible discoloration once the acne has faded.

Lemons

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Facial treatments with egg are featured on many spas’ menus of services because the proteins in egg whites are gentle, improve skin tone and elasticity, and increase your skin’s glow while minimizing fine lines. The problem with using raw eggs, however, is accidental ingestion — the whites can contain salmonella, a bacteria known to cause food poisoning. Recommendation: Save your eggs for a hair mask, or leave it in the kitchen with your baking soda.

Recommendation: If you absolutely cannot ditch this one, opt for an alcohol-free witch hazel.

A favorite of DIY beauty aficionados, lemons have a pH near 2 while the skin’s natural pH is closer to 4 or 5. Although the citric acid in lemons is touted as a natural exfoliant and skin lightener that can fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, the high acidity actually eats away at your skin’s protective layer. In addition, lemons contain a chemical called psoralen, which makes the skin more sensitive to the sun for nearly 24 hours. The hypersensitivity can result in blistering or discoloration that may last for months.

Eggs

Baking soda In contrast to the low pH of lemon juice, baking soda has a much higher pH than healthy skin should have. The highly alkaline nature disrupts your skin’s barrier, causing it to be more susceptible to breakouts and other irritations, including superficial infections. Recommendation: If you must use baking soda in the bathroom, avoid rashy, reactive skin by using it for cleaning only.

Recommendation: Reserve the toothpaste for your pearly whites. Instead, look for over-the-counter products such as salicylic acid or a benzoyl peroxide. These not only have bacteria-killing properties, but can act as an exfoliator.

The bottom line Generally speaking, if something isn’t intended for your skin, it’s probably best not to use it on your face, even if it is natural (or nontoxic).

Everything but the Kitchen Sink Hairspray You may have heard that hairspray is being used by some as a setting spray for makeup. This is an absolute no-no when you consider the harmful chemical ingredients it contains, in addition to alcohol, which will dry out your skin. The inherent stickiness can clog your pores and lead to skin irritation and blemishes, not to mention the risk if the hairspray were to accidentally get in your eyes. Just say no to this one, and go for a quality, store-bought makeup setting spray instead.

Elmer’s glue Remember the fun of peeling dried Elmer’s glue off your hands when you “accidentally” got a little carried away during cut-and-paste art projects as a kid? Believe it or not, Elmer’s is now being recommended by DIYers as a treatment for blackhead removal. When it comes to the professionals, the jury is still out. Some dermatologists see little harm in a short-term application as long as you avoid open or raw skin. Others are squarely in the “abso-

lutely not!” camp. If you’re considering a trip down memory lane with a twist, be aware of the following: • Dried glue can be uncomfortable to remove because it attaches to your skin’s tiny hairs. • Elmer’s or any other white glue was not formulated with skin-grade chemicals, so minor skin irritation or a more serious adverse reaction is a possibility.

SANDWICHES, SPORTS, & HIS SONS

MICHAEL HALL OF GASLIGHT GRILL

Michael Hall started as a dishwasher in 2005 at McCormick & Schmick’s and worked his way up, opting for years of on-the-job training instead of culinary school. Recently, we chatted about his third year as executive chef of Gaslight Grill and how he balances life as a working dad. Who have been some of your most influential mentors in this business? Nathan Holm, who is currently the executive chef for all of the Red Door Grills. He’s the one who noticed right away that I had potential. And Thom Zoog, a chef in the St. Louis area. He owns several restaurants and he taught me a lot. What do you think sets this restaurant apart from similar places? Quality ingredients. I don’t buy the cheapest. I use multiple vendors and sample what I want to use from each of them. Then I decide on which one I feel is the best. Tell me about your most recent KC dining experience. Lunch at JJ’s on the Plaza. I had the shrimp and lobster pockets for an appetizer, then the Cubano sandwich. Do you have a guilty-pleasure food? Ramen. It’s high in calories and probably not the greatest for you, but I like it. Anything spicy.

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

What’s an indispensable ingredient in your kitchen? Salt. It’s flavor. It’s the No. 1 flavor in the world. Do you have a culinary tip for the home cook? Taste everything before you serve it. It’s breakfast, what are you making? I like a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich with French toast as the bread. We have all the ingredients on the [Sunday brunch] buffet, so you can throw that together when you’re here. What do you do in your free time? Hang out with my kids. I’ve got two sons, 4 and 8 years old. I just hang out with them — take them to the park, the mall, the zoo, wherever. Do your kids have a favorite dish that you make? My youngest one is more open-minded. The older one doesn’t each much other than chicken fingers and French fries. The youngest one, though, he’ll eat anything I give him. Sushi is probably one of his favorites. And finally, what is your favorite thing about KC? Sports. I’m a huge Royals, Chiefs, Sporting KC, and Missouri Mavericks fan.

At Ultimate Escape Day Spa, our goal is to provide you with an atmosphere where you can escape from everyday stresses and focus on your well-being. We provide a variety of services to lavishly pamper you from head-to-toe.

6 WAYS TO GET YOUR CHILD TO READ THIS SUMMER It’s the summer of freedom. Ask any school-aged kid. Summer is a time to exchange P.E. class for cannonballs in the pool. Math class for baseball games under the lights. And literature for, nope, sorry; you still need to read, kid. “The summer slide” may sound like chlorinated fun, but it’s a term teachers use to refer to kids dropping in overall reading levels if they don’t read during those three sweet months of freedom. BECAUSE I SAID SO ...

Written by Julie Burton | Photo by Samantha Levi

NO SOLICITATION We have a problem in Suburbia. My doorbell rang three times in one day. I did what I always do: I hid, peeked out the window, and let my dogs bark at the door. Two different solicitors were selling two different products. One solicitor came back within 30 minutes, which is totally weird, dude. Adding a “no solicitation” sign has always been on my to-do list. It shot right up to the top of the list after I saw my neighbor Melissa’s version of “no solicitation” taped over her doorbell:

PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND BEFORE YOU RING MY DOORBELL OR KNOCK:

If the answers to these questions are no, please do not ring the doorbell. Thank you! — Melissa

Don’t say the word crap unless you really mean it, kids.

I applaud you for not getting caught up in pyramid schemes like many housewives of today. I’m required to buy pyramid-scheme things to support my friends. In reality, all I want to do is shout — “NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR CRAP!”

LAWN TREATMENT: PREPARING YOUR LAWN FOR THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS AHEAD The appearance of green grass is one of the most welcome sights after the long, dreary landscape of winter, and one that many people hope will stick around as long as possible before winter rolls around again. In addition to its aesthetic value, grass performs a number of important functions that may or may not readily come to mind, including: •C limate control: Turfgrasses significantly cool temperatures at ground level, acting as outdoor “air conditioners.” • I mproved air quality: Dust and smoke particles from the atmosphere as well as pollutants, such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, are trapped or absorbed by turfgrasses, which help to keep the air cleaner. •N oise reduction: Grassy areas absorb noise, thereby decreasing excessive sound, a growing problem in urban areas. So, what are some of the things that can be done now that will help to extend the life and enjoyment of your lawn throughout the summer? Randy White of Suburban Lawn and Garden’s Lenexa location explains that because our region has seen persistent droughts over the last few years, it’s critical to prepare your lawn now to help it withstand the scorching summer months sure to come. White

•A pply pre-emergent. This helps to control broad-leaf weeds, such as dandelions, as well as crabgrass. •K eep the grass well-watered. “You don’t need to ‘float’ the lawn,” White explains. Approximately an inch of water per week is sufficient, which translates to about 10 to 15 minutes of watering twice a week. Watering longer less often — as opposed to just getting the ground wet on a daily basis — allows the water to sink in. The roots will follow the water down into the ground, creating a deeper, more healthy root system. White says people often make the mistake of over-watering, which encourages top growth and the development of a shallow vs. deep-root system. This actually weakens the integrity of the lawn, and may also set you up for fungus problems. One way to test whether your grass needs to be watered is by stepping on it. If the grass doesn’t spring back, it probably needs to be watered.

GOOD TASTES

Written by Gina Reardon | Photo by Melanie McDowell

IF YOU DON’T BRING ME FLOWERS... During a half-hearted attempt at spring cleaning, I stumbled across a sweet relic from the past — a Mother’s Day card created out of now faded pink construction paper. “Happy Mother’s Day” was written on the front in addition to a hand-drawn bouquet of flowers. Inside there was a message: “I saw these pretty flowers on the ground and thought of you!” (Because we all know you’re not supposed to pick flowers that aren’t yours.) The card was unsigned … as if I wouldn’t know. On Sunday, May 13, I hope we all can take a moment to do something thoughtful and loving for our mothers who are living, remember with love our mothers who have passed, celebrate all the soon-to-be mothers in our lives, and create a moment that will live on. If brunch or lunch is a part of your plan for the day, this asparagus tart will be a light and lovely addition to your celebration!

Asparagus Tart Yield: 6 to 8 servings INGREDIENTS FOR PASTRY 1-1/4 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons cold shortening 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 2 to 3 tablespoons ice water

DIRECTIONS FOR PASTRY Combine the flour and salt in a food processor. Add cold shortening and butter, and pulse until the butter-flour mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water and pulse just until the dough comes together. Gather dough and form into a disc, then wrap in plastic wrap and chill for one hour. Roll the cold dough on a floured cloth into an 11-inch round, then fit the dough inside a quiche dish or 9-inch tart pan with removable bottom. Press the dough against the bottom edge and inside of the ring. Run the rolling pin over the top edge of the ring to cut off the excess dough. Chill for 30 minutes. Carefully line the tart dough with aluminum foil, fill with pie weights or dried beans, and blind bake the pastry in a 375-degree oven for about 20 minutes until the dough begins to set and no longer appears wet. Remove foil and pie weights.

INGREDIENTS FOR FILLING 1 medium leek (white and pale green parts only) 1 pound of medium asparagus, trimmed 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1-1/3 cups heavy cream 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon

DIRECTIONS FOR FILLING Wash leek in a bowl of cold water, agitating water, then lift it out and pat dry. Quarter lengthwise, then cut crosswise into 1/3-inch pieces. Blanch asparagus in a pot of salted boiling water, about 2 minutes, until it turns bright green. Lift asparagus out with tongs, plunge it into a bowl of ice water to stop it from cooking, then drain and pat dry. Cut off and reserve the tips, then thinly slice the stalks crosswise. Heat butter in a 10- to 12-inch heavy skillet over moderately low heat until the foam subsides, then cook the leek with 1/4 teaspoon salt, stirring, until softened, about 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in sliced asparagus and 1/4 teaspoon pepper and remove from heat. Whisk together cream, 2 eggs, tarragon, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Spoon the asparagus mixture into the quiche/tart shell, spreading evenly, then pour cream mixture over the asparagus. Bake the tart until the filling is just beginning to set but still loose on top, about 20 to 25 minutes. Scatter the asparagus tips over top, pressing lightly if necessary to help them settle into the filling, then continue to bake until the custard is golden and just set, but still slightly wobbly in center, about 30 minutes more (custard will continue to set as it cools). Cool the tart on a baking rack until warm, about 30 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature, then cut into 6 to 8 wedges.

Notes: You can make the dough up to one day early — either stored as a dough ball or already rolled out and placed in the pan. Just make sure to wrap and chill the dough before storing. You also can bake the tart 2 hours ahead. Let it cool, then cover loosely with plastic wrap and keep at room temperature. Reheat, if desired, in a preheated 350-degree oven until warm, about 15 to 20 minutes.
