PUBLISHER’S NOTE

SUNDRESSES & SUNSHINE As I write this publisher’s note, it’s freezing outside. This weekend, it’s supposed to be in the 50s, but today, it’s about 35 degrees. Sure, this is typical Midwestern weather, but I can never get used to it. I’m ready to wear those sundresses! Back in high school, teenage-me would be in the tanning bed in preparation for the coming sunny days. I’d get a base tan for my spring break vacation. And during the summer, I’d slather on suntan oil to get that perfect level of bronze as I lounged by the pool. I only used sunscreen to prevent sunburns. Today, of course, we know the dangers of tanning. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun and artificial sources are a known carcinogen, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer. As an adult, I’m more cautious in the sun. I’m diligent with sunscreen— especially on my face—and I am militant about my kids’ sunscreen usage. If you’re worried about your (awful) past skincare decisions like I am, today’s advancements in beauty technology can help repair skin from past damage. And, of course, don’t forget to visit your dermatologist each year for a skin checkup! And when the sunshine hits (or before), there are some great opportunities to get outside right here in Kansas City. Go check out your local farmers market (p. 12) or celebrate Earth Day (p. 24). Or if you need to update your home this spring, read our article on page 22 about how to make your home’s style fit 2022 design trends. Here’s to warmer weather and a safe and sunny spring!

t’s that time of year! The farmers markets are about to reopen. Whether you live in Overland Park, Lenexa, Olathe, or somewhere else nearby, there will be a farmers market to visit near you. You’ll find locally grown and locally made products like fresh fruit, vegetables, baked goods, and more. Each farmers market brings something unique to the table, and there is a lot of exciting news when it comes to the one in Overland Park. This year they will be celebrating their 40th anniversary back in the original location. The city is also working with the Downtown Overland Park Partnership to bring back the popular outdoor entertainment. “The 2022 market layout will expand the footprint of the overall market out from under the farmers market pavilion and into nearby parking lots and onto Marty Street,” says Kristina Stanley, City of Overland Park’s recreation supervisor. “Portions of Marty Street will be closed during market operations,” Stanley explains. The layout was much smaller in

2019, measuring a little over 22,000 square feet. This year it will be nearly 70,000 square feet! “Many of the things all stakeholders enjoyed about the Matt Ross Community Center market will be similar at the expanded pavilion site,” Stanley says. “The expanded pavilion site will offer space between stalls, provide additional parking adjacent to the market site, including parking specifically for farmers market vendors and staff, and additional nearby restrooms.” Some local farmers markets are

small, while others have hundreds of vendors that come out each week. The Overland Park market is quite large. “We have almost 90 vendors with more than 45 vendors who speak 23 different languages,” says Stanley. Not every vendor will be at the farmers market each week, but there will always be a wide range of unique finds. “We have urban farmers who farm on 0.1 acre of land to farmers who own hundreds of acres,” Stanley says. “We have first-generation farmers to fourth-generation farmers,” she

continues. Some vendors sell grassfed meat and others sell gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan products. You can also find flowers, beauty products, and fresh-cooked meals. There is something for everyone.

products made with love and passion. There is always something special for us to wake up at 3 a.m. every Saturday morning to carefully craft each of our salsas by hand to offer at the farmers market,” they continue.

At farmers markets, you receive the highest quality produce and other unmatchable products, but you also support a wide range of local businesses and give money back to the community. “We have vendors and shoppers of all races, ethnicities, religions, national origins, and sexual orientations, so all are welcome all the time. This diversity is what makes the Overland Park Farmers Market so special,” Stanley says.

Another popular vendor you can find at the market is The Wild Way Coffee. “Out of all the events we do with our mobile coffee camper, the Overland Park Farmers Market is at the top of the list,” says Christine Clutton, owner and trailer driver. “We love the friendships and relationships we’ve built with the other vendors and farmers and with the customers we see on a regular basis. All the vendors put so much love and hard work into their products; there’s a lot of pride in sharing them with the community.”

Stanley explains that COVID-19 reminded us just how important farmers markets are. “When the world shut down, farmers markets were allowed to open as an essential food provider. When grocery stores and big box stores were running low on products, farmers market vendors had a surplus of food.” Taco Naco KC is one of many enthusiastic vendors you can find at the market. “The Overland Park Farmers Market is our roots. It is where we started,” explains chef Fernanda and owner Brian Goldman. “Over the years at the market, the customers, vendors, and city officials have become our friends, and we are always happy to see our friends again. We all feel like a big family in the community working together for quality

There is a strong sense of family and culture behind each farmers market in the area. “Each vendor brings passion, adds purpose, demonstrates constant professionalism, and helps promote our philosophy all while adding unique quality products that the public can’t seem to get enough of no matter where we are located,” adds Stanley. This is true for other farmers markets in the area. When it comes to the Kansas City area, there is always a fantastic farmers market to visit within a reasonable driving distance. Take some time to give back to the community by checking out a market near you.

NATIVE AMERICAN JEWELRY WITH LASTING BEAUTY

WRITTEN BY BETHANEY PHILLIPS / PHOTOS BY JAMI BOWMAN

F

or years, Pamela Minick has found solace in intricate Native American jewelry. Featuring natural gemstones like white buffalo, turquoise, sterling, and more, her incredible collection consists of thousands of pieces, all of which come from mines throughout the country—many of which have been retired. This leaves White Buffalo Trading Co. as offering some of the most unique pieces around, including highly sought-after stones ranging in all colors, including pale greens and blues to those that are bright green in hues.

“It’s like a big jewelry box,” Minick says, adding that she offers new and vintage pieces alike. “Not one type sells better than the other; there’s something for everyone, and these pieces continue to get more and more beautiful over time.” Additional stones include marble, alabaster, pipestone, and coral—and spiny oyster—it’s an unending list of variety that allows customers to shop in the style, size, and budget that suits them personally. Minick also works hard to find items that are more unique, such as handmade heishi beads—tiny turquoise

tubes—that haven’t been in production since the 1980s. It’s items like these that she’s proud to collect, sell, and share with others, she adds. As for her best-selling type of jewelry, it recently transitioned from earrings, which had reigned as topdog for decades, to cuffs. “Cuffs are very popular,” she says about this style of bracelet. Another popular style of jewelry is squash blossoms, a type of large necklace with a horseshoe or crescent shape at the bottom. “They’re a bigger necklace and they’re incredible,” she explains.

Customers can inquire for specific pieces, or even order custom creations, each of which are handmade by Native American artists. Most come from New Mexico, although the stones themselves come from all over the country. About the job, Minick says she enjoys showing pieces to new collectors and showing them the different types of stones. She has also styled for many different weddings, including those of all cultures. However, she points out that it doesn’t have to be a special occasion to wear these colored stones. It’s jewelry for all occasions. “It’s natural beauty, it has a color to it,” Minick says. “I wouldn’t put down diamonds, but a lot of people want something more unique. These pieces last

forever; you can hand them down. The older it gets, the nicer they look. It never loses value.”

“The pieces continue to get more and more beautiful over time.” Meanwhile, she’s a lifelong expert about stones, settings, styles of jewelry, as well as where they were mined. Visitors can learn a fascinating history lesson each time they shop. The store also carries a variety of handmade items such as fetishes, small hand-carved animals, art, pottery, and

cradle boards. For anyone who is new to Native American jewelry, Minick offers some advice. She says start with an investment piece; going too small can hide your new joy. A medium-sized piece also offers more opportunity to wear. Then, add to your budding collection with smaller pieces and add on what you enjoy most, she says. For new and lifelong collectors alike, the fun of it is adding new styles and colors, so you can look and feel fresh on any occasion. And no matter what you’re wearing. White Buffalo Trading Co. posts new items on social media, including Facebook and Instagram. They are open Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WELLNESS

LIVING WITH ADHD PART ONE

WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

Does your child struggle to sit still and maintain focus during a conversation or while doing schoolwork? Do you sometimes find that they react quickly to situations without thought? Have you noticed an increase in comments from teachers and faculty about your child being disruptive or causing trouble? ADHD may be contributing to your child’s behavior. Attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder that is increasingly prevalent in today’s youth. And ADHD affects adults as well. According to the American Psychiatric Association, almost 9 percent of children have ADHD, and 2.5 percent of adults wrestle with the affliction. It is prevalent in all genders, but diagnosed more frequently in males. Often, the disorder is first observed with school-aged children. It is a leading contributor to issues with disruptive behavior in the classroom and issues completing assigned tasks and homework. Higher activity levels, poor attention spans, and inability to sit still contribute significantly to these issues. These children can also struggle with

family and interpersonal relationships. “As someone specializing in ADHD and intimately aware of symptoms and prognosis, I think it is vital for early detection and intervention,” advises Dr. Sasha Hamdani, board-certified psychiatrist and ADHD specialist. “When ADHD is managed appropriately from a young age, you can see a vast improvement in global functioning, not just the academic career.” In the last two decades, significant progress has been made in diagnosing this disorder and the education of teachers, school administrative staff, counselors and daycare providers. This knowledge assists these individuals in observing key indicators and arming parents with knowledge about ADHD. While schools do not diagnose ADHD or other disorders, they can

help guide parents to resources for testing and treatment.

ADHD Classifications

There are three principle ADHD classifications: inattentive type, hyperactive type, and combined type. These “types” are diagnosed by medical professionals based on the particular behaviors the individual has exhibited over the past six months. Inattentive ADHD typically presents as problems with lacking attention and ability to focus, while the hyperactive type lends itself more to behavior, presenting as hyperactivity. Combined type ADHD is when all of these factors are in play. Let’s take a deeper dive into ADHD types.

WELLNESS CONT. Inattentive Type ADHD persons who present with this type typically: • Are easily distracted and often lose or misplace things. Looking for things like car keys, glasses, or homework is a regular part of life. • Lack the ability to focus and pay attention; frequently resulting in mistakes, whether at work or school. It can also affect interpersonal behaviors and relationships. • Are often accused of “not paying attention.” The individual may struggle in school, church, lectures, presentations, and more. Prolonged reading can also be challenging. • Are often tardy or do not complete work tasks, school tasks, errands, chores, and more, as they tend to avoid activities that require sustained mental focus. •F ind listening intently to be difficult. • Tend to lack organizational and pri-

oritizing skills. Time management is also challenging—missing deadlines can be a regular occurrence.

• Often answer questions or respond in conversations before the other person has finished what they are saying.

• Appear forgetful in a variety of ways.

• Do not like waiting in line or taking turns.

Hyperactive Type ADHD persons who present with this type typically: • Are perpetual motion machines; they fidget, squirm, wiggle, jiggle legs, tap hands or feet, and more. They are always on the go. • Find it difficult to sit at a desk, work, or school, and also are challenged by meetings, presentations, seminars, and such that require prolonged sitting. • May often stand up, run, or climb in inappropriate situations like school, religious services, and work. • Tend to be excessive talkers and are frequently unable to play or participate in activities in a quiet, orderly manner. They also tend to interrupt conversations.

• May use other people’s property without permission to take over what someone is doing without being asked or granted permission. They struggle to participate in simple things like games and activities because of this. “If you are concerned about symptoms like these and have access to care, seeking out a professional to get a diagnosis is beneficial because it opens up the potential for different sources of early management,” notes Dr. Hamdani. This article will continue with diagnosis and treatment discussion with Dr. Hamdani in the next issue of SIMPLYkc.

A FRIENDLY QUESTION

Is it okay to not have a friends group? I have friends but they all belong to different circles. You’ll never see me laughing it up with a group of friends at a coffee shop like Carrie on Sex and the City or Rachel on Friends . I feel bad when I see groups like this when I’m out. I used to have a group of friends with my sorority years ago, but we don’t live in the same city anymore. I’m the queen of making friends one-by-one. How can I get a group of friends?

You know what? I am the same way. When I see a group of friends out, I feel that pain too. Let’s be honest—I see friends out more on social media than in real life. “Why don’t I have a big group of girlfriends to travel with and grow old with?” You do, though. You do have friends to travel with and have coffee with and grow old with. It’s not the number of friends you have but the depth of the relationships. Isn’t one good friend better than 10 acquaintances? Fun is what you make it. Introduce your friends. No one should say no to making a new friend. And if they do—well, they shouldn’t be your friend. Right?

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

HOME/STYLE

REFRESH YOUR SPACE WITH THESE 2022 INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS

WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTOS COURTESY OF NOBLE DESIGNS—LAURA KILGORE PHOTOGRAPHY

W

e are now in the third year of a global pandemic. We no longer only eat, sleep, and make memories in our homes; many people now work from home too. Creating a living space that is comfortable yet stylish is more important these days than it has ever been. Most people desire a space that reflects who they are while remaining chic. No matter how you choose to decorate, there is no denying the importance of creating a positive environment in your home. Designing a space that you love enough to spend long periods in determines how you feel.

APRIL 2022

Interior design trends are constantly changing. Some of these changes are minor, while others are a little more difficult to keep up with. The interior design trends this year are not much different than last year. “We work with classics and add fresh touches, so a new calendar year doesn’t change a lot for us,” explains Sara Noble of Noble Designs. “Over the last couple of years, we have seen a move to warm creams versus cooler grays.” Noble continues, “We are seeing saturated colors, more streamlined designs, and technology making a big play in design this year.”

Homes are becoming more and more high tech. People are adding smart thermostats, smart locks, and video doorbells. Today people even have access to do-it-yourself security systems. Noble also mentioned the rise in mixed metals. “Many of the new plumbing fixtures shown at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show this month were mixing two metals like stainless steel and brass,” she explains. “Traditional style is making a strong comeback,” Noble says. “A little granny fabric that’s been updated with new colorways can be really fun. Wallpaper is always

a staple for us, but we are seeing it used more and more.” Adding some traditional style to your space might take you back to the good old days and bring about a sense of comfort. There is a rise in more sustainable accents and materials as well. These elements can be added through a vintage sofa or repurposing various pieces of decor. Vintage items tend to be unique. Sometimes it is nice to know you are designing your space with objects that no one else has. This practice is better for the environment too! If you are looking to freshen up your space, you don’t have to break the bank in the process. “Paint is always an inexpensive way to freshen up your space. We are painting walls and trim the same color and picking a white or cream to brighten up a

space. Dramatic art on the walls really pops with the neutral backdrop,” Noble says. Another way to switch up the style of your space is to consider lighting. “Focus on lighting for big impact. Do something a little more modern for a fresh feel,” Noble suggests. If you don’t want to fix up your space on your own, you might consider reaching out to a professional. “While it’s not magic and I do think homeowners can do a lot themselves, it is nice to have someone guiding you so your investments work in your space and accomplish your goals,” Noble explains. There are advantages to hiring a designer. They have nearly endless knowledge and skills in this area. “We live and breathe design and dedicate

a lot of money and time to staying educated in what is out there and available. I always think if you can afford it, a designer is well worth the investment,” Noble adds. If you decide to take on this challenge alone, you can keep up with design trends by turning to social media. “Social media has been a game-changer for getting information to consumers,” says Noble. “Instagram is my favorite for interior design inspiration. I also still subscribe to design magazines. The pages are full of current trend inspiration.” Having a space that reflects who you are is great, but you can benefit from keeping it up-to-date too. There are plenty of trends to choose from this year, so you should have no trouble picking out the ones that fit your taste.

7 THINGS

WAYS TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY

1. D on’t drive. Instead of driving wherever you need to go, ride your bike or take a walk. If you live far from school or work and need to take a car, consider carpooling. 2. P lant a seed. Whether you want to start small with a single seed or take on an entire garden, plant something. If you don’t have the space for plants, you could donate to one of the many tree planting charities instead. 3. C heck out earthday.org. Here you can learn all about Earth Day or take a pledge. This website also has a list of Earth Day events so you can find the closest one to you. If you don’t want to go anywhere, virtual Earth Day events with musicians and speakers can be just as fun. 4. D itch your plastic water bottle. If you haven’t already, it’s time to purchase a reusable water bottle. If you are worried about keeping your water clean, you can find one with a filter.

5. M ake another sustainable change. If you have already jumped on the reusable water bottle train, consider making a different switch. There are many opportunities when it comes to sustainable changes you can make. You could stop buying paper towels and buy some cloth napkins or make some calls and switch to paperless billing. 6. G o outside. Instead of streaming the next season of your newest show addiction, spend some time outside. Go on a walk with friends, family, or your dog. Plan a picnic, head to the park, or read a book in your yard. Whatever activity you decide on, make sure you spend some time outdoors enjoying what the earth has to offer. 7. P repare a meatless meal. Earth Day is a great time to try a plant-based diet. You do not have to commit to anything, but cutting meat out of your meals for the day can make a difference. Plus, trying out new recipes is fun!

SHOWING YOUR VALUE ON PAPER IS NO SIMPLE TASK WRITTEN BY BETHANEY PHILLIPS PHOTOS BY JAMI BOWMAN

espite the “one-size-fitsall” résumé templates and advice out there for job seekers, not all résumés are created equally, explains Alana Henry, founder of The Writique. The perfect résumé combines the right words and elements of visual design to land individuals high-level positions with salaries to match. And that’s exactly what Henry and her team of expert writers set out to do. Since 2015 The Writique has been crafting custom, high-level documents in order to help professionals and others succeed. The Writique offers a variety of services, including résumés, cover letters, LinkedIn optimization, coaching, and more. Each is tailored to the applicant’s career level and intended job focus.

Above: Alana Henry, founder of The Writique The latter, Henry says, should be your first step in the job hunt. “Take the time to develop a job search strategy; you have to get that foundation first to set the stage for what you’re looking for. What’s on paper translates to what that prospective industry or employer is looking for.” That’s especially true today in what Henry refers to as “The Great Resignation,” in which people are actively

leaving jobs that would otherwise be considered desirable and well-compensated positions. Because it’s a job seeker’s market, Henry says the first step is identifying your wants and needs in a career. She encourages job seekers to make lists of things they like about their job, things they are looking for, and what they didn’t like about past positions. This step eliminates rash deci-

sions that may leave workers unhappy with their new role. Clients who are interested in The Writique’s services can schedule a free consultation call where the team will guide them toward the best professional package for their career goals. Henry adds that spending 1 percent of your salary is a good rule of thumb for obtaining professional help in creating an effective and professional résumé. This can land you the career jump you’ve been looking to achieve. “A lot of people experience sticker shock when they are researching résumé writers; people think it’s just a piece of paper. What’s missed sometimes is understanding the return on investment,” she says. “If that ‘piece of paper’ gets a huge salary increase, that is significant.” On average, The Writique customers earn a $40,000 salary bump when investing in their services. By showing

companies what they want to see—not everything an applicant has done—The Writique helps advance careers. “I don’t write general résumés, because general résumés don’t work,” Henry says. “The résumé is really about the employer—what they want to see— showing the person’s value on paper and showing what they’re looking for.” Henry started the business as a solopreneur in 2015, and has since added a team of 10 to the business. She also holds a list of résumé certifications herself, including: Certified Professional Résumé Writer and Nationally Certified Online Profile Expert. She is also a member of the National Résumé Writers’ Association (NRWA), the Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches (PARW/CC), and the Society of Elite Résumé Writers (SERW), to name a few. Her business is highly rated on Google and elsewhere, and she has even obtained some distinctions on “Top Résumé Writers” lists.

Former clients agree that the services are instrumental in landing jobs and raises alike. “The Writique did a phenomenal job on my résumé! They made it so easy to provide information about my background and experience. They translated my career into a beautiful résumé,” says customer Cheryl Wegrzyn.

“On average, The Writique customers earn a $40,000 salary bump.” Prior to bringing others’ professions to paper, Henry worked as a journalist and high school English teacher, where she saw a need for students to learn the power of career planning and how to become successful in the professional world. Wanting to fill this need (and on maternity leave), she began writing résumés and professional documents for others. As for the importance of what she does, Henry says the right résumé makes all the difference in a job search. “Résumé writers cut your job search by almost half and reduce the length of time on the job search,” she says. “It’s content that increases your value and helps you land higher paying jobs.” Meanwhile, providing the right information can show others what you can do. In a world where applicants are all performing the same task, Henry says, it’s what makes all the difference. “There’s nothing like an outside lens. Having someone from the outside gives a whole new perspective on how much you have to offer.”

PARENTING

GUIDING YOUR CHILD THROUGH DIVORCE

WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

You and your spouse have been up, down, and all around trying to “work it out.” After years of trying to find a way, you have agreed to instead go your separate ways. Often, the biggest challenge divorcing parents face is parenting their children through and after splitting up. “This is a difficult time. You’re trying to juggle your children’s needs while at the same time recognizing your emotions and the general stress you are under. Be compassionate with yourself. Reach out to people who have been through this and remind yourself how this will improve. Know that your kids will be okay,” advises Catherine Craig, licensed specialist clinical social worker. The first challenge is how to tell your children you are dissolving your marriage while assuring them that things will be okay. Divorce is highly stressful and emotional. The first step to take as you prepare to inform your children that “mommy and daddy” aren’t going to live together anymore is to

36

SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE

|

APRIL 2022

approach the matter with empathy for your children and stay calm. Put your children first, and put your pain, anger, frustration, and sadness aside. The approach you take depends on the age of your children, but the guidelines includes several commonalities, regardless of age. Here are some simple things to remember, though the implementation will be challenging. •D o not make your spouse the villain, and talk to your children together with a calm united front. •T ell the truth, but do not go into details. Your problems as a couple are just that—your problems. A simple “we have grown apart” or “we want different things” is appropriate. Keep a united front. •A ssure your children that you both love them, that they are and will remain the top priority for both of you, and that they will have access and time with both parents. • If your split is relatively amicable,

it might also comfort your child to say you and your spouse will always have a love for each other. This can reassure your children at a terrifying moment in their lives. • If the split is acrimonious, do your best to shelter them from any anger or resentment, and under no circumstance cast blame on the other. • If infidelity, money problems, or alcohol and drug abuse are involved, remember this is not something they need to be exposed to at this critical moment (and maybe never). Children are different and may have a variety of reactions, including shock, silence, tears, anger, and even feigned indifference. You can count on them to have many questions, so be ready to listen intently and calmly discuss the answers. One of the first questions your children will likely ask is about living arrangements. Make sure you have spoken to your spouse and formed a plan. It will calm them to know there

is a plan in place, and the two of you are in agreement. Remain empathetic, caring, and patient. If they see you and your spouse handling the situation calmly, it will calm them. As the divorce proceedings unfold, tempers may flair. Shield your children from these moments. They need reassurance, peace, and love from both of you. Here are a few things they do not need: •Y ou to withdraw from them. No matter how painful the circumstances, you must have your children feel your presence and love daily. •T o be used as a go-between. Do not make your children carry messages back and forth between you and your soon-to-be-ex. •T o hear or see negative, inflammatory emotions, words, and actions. If you can’t be positive about their other parent, say as little as possible. •D isruption in their routines and lives. Even if you share time, ensure that

the kids have a consistent parenting schedule. Another critical thing to remember is you should model the behavior you wish for your children if they ever find themselves in your situation. Children learn from their parents. Show them what a caring, adult relationship can be even when it’s heading down a new path. Craig maintains, “Your kids will likely face these uncertainties with fear at times. In those moments, remind them they are safe and loved and show them they are seen and heard by listening and being curious about their thoughts and feelings without trying to fix it or make them better. Give them the message that the family can make it through difficult times, and so can they.” Your goodwill and a stable parent relationship will help them through this traumatic time. When handled with care, your children will make it through this period feeling loved and protected.

KEEPING THE ENTREPRENEUR SPIRIT ALIVE THROUGH CREATIVITY WRITTEN BY JUDY GOPPERT

Perseverance, talent, family, and a vivacious personality have propelled Jami Bowman to find work she truly loves. She wears several hats: photographer, DJ, karaoke aficionado, and super mom! She also shares her skills taking photos as part of our SIMPLYkc team.

Sometimes the traditional road of working a nine to five job is simply not enough to raise children and live the life we desire. That is where plan B comes in, and this has worked in spades for Jami Bowman.

DJs who work in her company as well as her now-adult children.

“I enjoy taking photos of people—capturing real, beautiful moments. I look forward to each and every session.”

“I began as a young, struggling, single mom who needed to figure out how to survive and raise my kids on my own. I was headstrong about not being labeled as a statistic. I wanted to prove to everyone (and myself) that I could succeed,” Bowman explains. “I quickly learned that I could not support or raise my kids on my own by working the job I had with the expense of daycare, so I enrolled at Johnson County Community College to study business and entrepreneurship.”

“We offer mobile DJ, karaoke, music bingo, and trivia. My DJ company is called Electric Entertainment and I go by DJ Jami,” smiles Bowman. “We DJ several locations around Kansas City on a weekly basis.”

Bowman enjoyed singing karaoke in her free time and developed friends who were karaoke hosts. I can do that! she thought, so at the age of 21 she started her own karaoke/DJ business by going venue to venue selling DJ gigs.

As a further testament to her ambition, she acted on her true passion, photography, at age 35. She is selftaught, learning about photography entirely by experimentation, hard work, and dedication—and the good old internet.

This business that she built from the ground up is still going strong after 21 years, and she currently has four

have learned a lot from them and still do!” says Bowman. “I love growing and learning new things. I always set a high standard for myself and take pride in making people happy. I love being challenged.”

Above: Jami Bowman It is evident that her favorite part about being an entrepreneur is creating her own opportunities and destiny, for herself as well as for others. sional photographer for seven years. “I enjoy taking photos of people— capturing real, beautiful moments. I look forward to each and every session. I enjoy lifestyle photography the most,” explains Bowman. “I have been a photographer for SIMPLYkc Magazine for four years.” Her family plays a big role in her business as well. And she is no longer a single mom, as she found her perfect teammate a few years ago. He is supportive of her and all her ideas. “He’s the muscles, builder, and support behind the scenes. He does everything from building photo backdrops, props, setting up for shoots, carrying heavy equipment or being my model to practice on,” laughs Bowman.

“My kids have also been my models throughout the years while I was learning photography.” Veronica Sanford, whose son had his senior photos taken by Bowman, said, “Thank you sooo much! You always do such a great job. You do amazing work!” Another mom of a senior, Sarah McCoy Keady, commented, “Thank you for the beautiful pictures of my girl. They are exactly what I wanted!” Bowman even plans to open a wedding and event venue on her property in Paola, Kansas. “I love being creative, and making people feel confident through photography,” she says. And there are many ways she accomplishes this.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

THE BURTON TEA PARTY (I HATE TEA)

WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTO BY JAMI BOWMAN

The USA is the land of liberty and freedom. It’s the home of the brave. The United States is the only country to walk on the moon. The United States invented airplanes, computers, cellphones, potato chips, and the lightbulb. It’s also home to the fine, young patriots throwing tea into Boston Harbor because they didn’t like the British taxes on tea. And home to me and the kind H&R Block accountant’s computer displaying the fact that I owe $10,000 in federal taxes. Where’s the tea?! Someone give me some damn tea! A large chunk of those taxes is due to not claiming my two children as dependents. And not adjusting my withholdings to reflect that I wasn’t claiming them. If you’re not familiar with how the government feels about dissolving a marriage, let me tell you. They’re like my family: it’s frowned upon no matter how necessary it is for you as a couple. The government believes only one parent can claim dependents each year. I took the kids in 2020. My ex-husband took the kids in 2021. Whether you’re married, single, divorced, or widowed and you have a child, your child is always your dependent. Kids depend on their parents. Every parent should be able to claim their kids as dependents. Here are reasons I should claim my money-sucking teenage dependents at the same time as my ex-husband.

Uncle Sam, you’re a man. You have no idea what it’s like to have your daughters steal your good bras while you’re in a meeting wearing a uni-boob sports bra. Funding their closet costs money. • As I write this, my kids are currently living it up in the Bahamas with their dad (he probably got tax money back and can afford such luxury because he claimed the kids). I am still forking out money to their school lunch account and softball dues. • Speaking of school lunch, my kids need to eat because they’re still growing children. Do you know the amount of Takis (don’t ask) and PopTarts I have sitting in my pantry? And Ramen noodles. That’s a newer grocery item because I’m ten grand in the hole. • My kids do not live with me 365 days out of the year. And one could argue that’s the reason only one parent can claim them. On days I don’t have them, it takes a toll on my mental health as I watch TV—crying because I miss my kids, drinking cheap boxed wine and eating popcorn for dinner. • My kids are my money-sucking world. I ran out of a work meeting to meet my ex at the hospital to be with my daughter who fainted and hit her head on the counter. She’s fine. Thank you for asking. My point is—you already know how the rest of us feel about medical bills.

• Crumbl Cookies marketed themselves through TikTok and now my kids are begging, whining, and crying for $4 cookies made out of sugar, flour, and eggs. • The state of Kansas makes it difficult for 15-year-olds to find a job at a place such as Crumbl Cookies. For some reason, 16 is the magic “get a job so we can tax you” age. • The amount of hair in my shower allows me to fund the nice corporation that makes Drano. • Yes my kids are teenagers, but they’re still growing children. They grow out of clothes, shoes, underwear, my bras!

GOOD TASTES

WHEN YOU GIVE A KID A COOKIE… CHANCES ARE, THEY’LL ASK YOU FOR A GLASS OF MILK TO GO WITH IT!

WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON / PHOTO BY MELANIE MCDOWELL

My stepmom was a talented cook and a solid baker. My dad remarried when I was nine years old, after losing my mother to cancer. My stepmom baked cookies, pies, cakes, cinnamon rolls, and more, so it was not unusual to return home after school and be greeted with those wonderful aromas wafting from the kitchen, wrapping around me like a warm scented hug. Finding comfort in the kitchen while cooking for others is a passion and a gift to share. As a young mother myself, I baked as much as time allowed. My firstborn rarely had store-bought bread, and other than an occasional Oreo, only homemade cookies. At the next Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry, one can expect to discover a vast assortment of cookies of all shapes and sizes, including these Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Peanut Butter M&Ms and Amish Sugar Cookies. Funds raised by No Kid Hungry help food-insecure kids connect to more school breakfast, after-school and summer meals. Our local chapter of No Kid Hungry is making a difference, one cookie at a time. I hope to see you there!

Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Peanut Butter M&Ms Ingredients

Preparation

1 cup soft butter

Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, stirring well from bottom of the bowl, then add vanilla, blending well.

1/3 cup Crisco vegetable shortening ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup light brown sugar 1 cup dark brown sugar 1/4 cup turbinado (raw brown sugar) 2 eggs

Whisk dry ingredients together and add slowly, about a scant cup at a time. Mix well. Mix in chocolate chunks. By hand, fold in 1 cup of the peanut butter-filled M&Ms so they will not break, stirring to distribute evenly. Reserve remaining M&Ms. Cover bowl and refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to develop. (This step can be omitted if you simply cannot wait!) Pull bowl from refrigerator and allow to warm up on the counter for 1-2 hours.

1 teaspoon sea salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using a scoop for consistent size and baking time, scoop balls of dough about the size of a golf ball and place on parchment-lined baking sheets about 1 inch apart. Press lightly with the palm of your hand to flatten slightly, sprinkle a few grains of flakey salt on top, if desired, and press a few of the reserved M&Ms onto the top of the cookies.

12-14 ounces dark or bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped in about ½-inch pieces

Bake for 9-11 minutes until the cookies are set and no longer gooey on top. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets. This will yield a soft cookie. (For a crisper version, bake a minute or two longer until golden around the edges.)

12-16-ounce bag of peanut butter-filled M&Ms, divided

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, (or in the freezer to hide from your husband and kids).

Flakey sea salt, if desired

YEILDS: 3 DOZEN

3 teaspoons vanilla 3-¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda

Amish Sugar Cookies - the best soft sugar cookie recipe ever! Ingredients

Preparation

1 cup unsalted butter

Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes, and slowly blend in vegetable oil. Add eggs and vanilla, mix well. Sift or whisk together dry ingredients and stir in slowly, a scant cup at a time. Mix well.

1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup confectioner’s sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using a scoop, form balls of dough about 1 inch in diameter. Roll in coarse sugar, sanding sugar or sprinkles, and place on a baking sheet a few inches apart. Freeze for 15 minutes. Bake the cookies about 8-10 minutes until they have flattened slightly, are puffed, and are just barely beginning to crack. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheets (the cookies will continue to cook as they cool). Store in airtight containers for up to 5 days (or they disappear).

½ teaspoon salt

YEILDS: 3 DOZEN

2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla 4-½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
