PUBLISHER’S NOTE

SPRING CLEANING March is here! With it comes warmer weather, budding trees, and the joy that winter’s nasty weather is behind us (at least we hope it is). When this time of year arrives, I always feel the urge to start my spring cleaning. I clean out the closets, donate the clothes my kids have outgrown, and get rid of what we no longer use. I don’t know about you, but the feeling of organized closets, pantries, and cabinets makes me feel good—it gives my mind clarity. I usually tackle these projects on open weekends so my teenagers will help out. Once I share the plan of the day, though, they always seem to “have plans with friends” and scatter out of the house—the joys of having teenagers. If you need tips for sprucing up your space, The List (p. 7) is all about giving your home a refresh. Or if you need help setting boundaries with your teen and social media so they help with your cleaning, check out our Parenting article (p. 40). I wish you the best with your spring cleaning. I can’t wait to get started!

TRANSFORM INTO A WHOLE NEW WORLD WITH FLIPSWITCH VR

WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTOS BY MATT GIPSON

Are you curious about trying virtual reality but don’t know where to start? Truly experiencing VR and all it has to offer can be difficult to do within your own home. Maybe you don’t want to invest in the expensive equipment or you lack the space to move around, but don’t let this stop you from giving VR a chance. FlipSwitch VR is the first free-roam virtual reality experience to hit the Midwest. They offer a great experience for gamers and non-gamers alike. You can book tickets to play VR games within a 1,200 square foot playable space. Unlike VR of the past, you don’t have to sit in one place throughout the game. The experience most people have with VR involves small equipment such as cell phones. This type of VR isn’t as expansive, and it forces you to sit still. This is what causes people to feel unsteady or sick. The virtual

reality offered at FlipSwitch VR creates a completely immersive experience. “Whenever you walk you’re actually walking through the world so your brain is not getting any motion sickness,” explains Alex Harbolt, an employee at FlipSwitch VR. There are also in-game safety mechanisms that stop other issues from happening. There is even a game master present at every session. Up to four players can play at once and each session includes 35 minutes of gameplay. Anyone above

age 10 can get in on the action. FlipSwitch VR opened with only two games, but they now offer five games and are continuing to expand. “We want to make sure we have enough experiences available for people to try and hit all backgrounds of all ages,” explains Harbolt. In the VR game Corsair’s Curse, you are a cursed pirate seeking treasure. Skeleton Crew allows you and your friends to fight your way through enemy territory amidst a meteor storm. They offer two versions of

Arizona Sunshine which both take place during a zombie apocalypse. “Not everyone wants to be screaming and jumping. We are working on getting more puzzle games and more family-related games,” says Harboldt. “We definitely want to make it something anyone can do and anyone can have fun doing.” You can now play ARVI Escape Games as well, which allow you to pick from six different missions where you and your team race against the clock to complete them. They are working on another game at the moment where the two arenas can play against each other. All of the current games offered involve working as a team, but this new game would allow for a completely different experience. There is no risk to trying VR, especially at a place like FlipSwitch VR. “You put on the headset and you find out pretty quickly if you like it or not. 99.9 percent of people totally enjoy it,” says Harbolt. Once you put on the headset you are transformed continued on page 12

LOVE YOUR SMILE WITH DR. ROSS HEADLEY WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

You know the age-old question What came first, the chicken or the egg? The same could be asked about smiles and a sense of well-being. Did you know that just the act of smiling releases endorphins in the brain? Endorphins are responsible for making us feel happy, and they also help lower stress. The link between smiles and happiness becomes even more apparent if you’re someone who hides your smile. Designing Smiles Dr. Ross Headley and his team at KC Smile in Overland Park understand your situation. They’ve been transforming smiles—and improving lives—for almost 25 years. And not just Kansas Citians. Patients come from all over the U.S.—including

New York City and Los Angeles—to have Dr. Headley design their smile. “We offer a lot of dental design options—some that take as little time as a few minutes or some that are more complex and need more time,” says Dr. Headley. “It depends on the person’s situation.” To help patients

understand their options, a digital imaging process is used to show a patient how they can look after a specific procedure. “The patient can actually see the proposed result,” says Dr. Headley. “It is a wonderful communication tool. When patients proceed they

know what to expect. There is no big surprise at the end.” Dr. Headley is a dentist with a practice emphasis on cosmetic dentistry, but don’t let the term fool you. Cosmetic dentistry is as much about health as it is about appearance. For example, porcelain restorations are a great option for people with multiple dental problems. They transform teeth that are crooked, stained, gapped, chipped, and broken. Missing teeth can be replaced with porcelain bridges or implants. Porcelain can beautify teeth and make them look perfectly natural. Dental bonding, teeth whitening, and tooth-colored fillings help beautify teeth.

Comprehensive Dental Services Dr. Headley and his team also offer comprehensive general dental services, including dental cleanings and

examinations, as well as general dentistry. He often meets patients who are fearful of dental procedures.

“I was treated like absolute and total royalty. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was at home and was taken care of in that manner until I walked out the door. I can’t wait to return to finish my cosmetic work.”

If you are afraid of going to the dentist you’re not alone. The Colgate Oral and Dental Health Resource Center estimates that between 30 and 40

million Americans per year dodge trips to the dentist out of fear. Dr. Headley and his team are well aware of dental fears. In his practice they offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. It doesn’t make a patient burst out laughing, but it does create a relaxed feeling while you are alert and aware of what’s happening. For advanced procedures, oral sedation may be a good option for extremely fearful patients. Taken orally, the medication relaxes the patient to the point where they lose their fear and sometimes just fall asleep. It isn’t uncommon for patients who initially need oral sedation to lose their fear and not need the sedation in the future.

A New Type of Dental Experience Just as unique as the services offered is the attentive care that the KC Smile team gives their patients. Most patients are on a first-name basis with the team and have come to look forward to their visits. They build relationships that last for years. “I was treated like absolute and total royalty,” L.A. patient Jake Red says of his first KC Smile experience. “From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was at home and was taken care of in that manner until I walked out the door. I can’t wait to return to finish my cosmetic work.” “The best part of my job is making people happy by helping them achieve what they want,” says Dr. Headley. “The first couple of times I heard patients say ‘This changed my life’ or ‘This is the best thing I ever did for myself,’ it was great. But after hearing it a lot it has really started to sink in. I feel so fortunate to do this work.”

BE WELL

SPRING ALLERGIES ARE IN THE AIR WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

As the cold winter comes to an end, many of us look forward to the mild spring temperatures. With the blooming flowers and green leaves, nature also brings an increase of pollen that can lead to seasonal allergies. system in our infancy and early childhood, and to its fine-tuning through adulthood. When those microorganisms are damaged through poor diet, overuse of antibiotics, and medications that suppress stomach acid, our immune system is more likely to react inappropriately to a harmless substance like pollen. Diet can also play a factor in immune system health. Eating foods that are high in fiber and low in sugar can help protect healthy bacteria in the intestines. “That means avoiding fast food and artificial sweeteners, which can damage our microbiome and thus hurt the immune system,” says Dr. Hubkova.

Allergy medicine can bring relief to symptoms, but there may also be other ways to head off allergies before they start. As an integrative medicine specialist at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, Tereza Hubkova, MD, helps her patients get to the root cause of their allergies. “We integrate a variety of approaches and healing traditions that are evidence-based,” says Dr. Hubkova. “In addition to traditional medicine, we look for imbalances in the patient’s lifestyle and find ways to correct them. If we want to see fewer people suffer from allergies, we really have to educate everybody about their prevention.”

MARCH 2020

Preventing Allergies The number of people with seasonal and other allergies has dramatically increased over the past 50 years to between 30 and 40 percent of the population, says Dr. Hubkova. “As we’ve improved hygiene and spend most of our life indoors away from nature and sunshine, we deprive our immune systems from opportunities to develop and mature properly,” she says. Dr. Hubkova explains that the microorganisms living in our gut and other parts of our body are crucial to proper development of our immune

For women who are pregnant, getting the right amount of vitamin D can help prevent asthma and allergies in their kids. “Vitamin D has a direct effect on our immune system,” she says. “Physicians may suggest taking vitamin D supplements in the winter when we don’t get as much sun.” Getting a pet may have a protective benefit for allergies too, she says. A study found that kids raised with cats and dogs and those around farm animals were less likely to develop allergies as well as asthma.

Finding Natural Treatments For those who already have seasonal allergies, Dr. Hubkova suggests the

following tips for managing symptoms: •R educe exposure to pollen. If you know you’re allergic to something outside, keep your windows closed during the season, take off your shoes when you come in the house, and wash your clothes after wearing them outside. A HEPA air filter can also help reduce allergens and pollutants in the air. Consider one for your bedroom and one for your office or place of work. •C onsider probiotics. Some studies have found that certain probiotics can improve allergy symptoms for those with allergic rhinitis. Not all probiotics are the same, and not all studies show benefits, so work with your doctor to find one that’s right for you.

•T ry acupuncture. One study of 422 people with allergic rhinitis showed that acupuncture given along with antihistamines relieved allergy symptoms more than just the antihistamines alone. “It’s not a 100 percent cure for everyone, but it’s definitely worth it to try,” Dr. Hubkova says. •E at foods with quercetin. Quercetin is a natural antihistamine and can be found in green tea as well as foods like red onions, shallots, apples, broccoli, and capers. •R educe stress and improve sleep. Stress can wreak havoc on your immune system, says Dr. Hubkova. Find ways to deal with stress, like practicing gratitude and meditation. Getting enough sleep is also essential for

keeping your immune system healthy. •A void certain foods. Some foods, such as alcohol, aged cheeses, chocolate, and processed meat products like salami, ham, or sausages can increase your histamine level. This may contribute to allergy symptoms. See if avoiding them helps your symptoms. “Many people also improve when they avoid all dairy products, since they tend to make mucus thicker and often promote inflammation,” says Dr. Hubkova. Check with your doctor to help answer any questions you have about dealing with allergies. For more information about AdventHealth’s approach to whole health, visit AdventHealthKC.com.

A LIFETIME OF DESIGN AND BUILDING WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

Timothy Weatherly, owner of Reilly’s Contracting, spent his childhood repairing homes with his grandfather, a quiet man skilled with his hands. “I have a scar on my thumb from when I was 10 and cut myself while scraping off wallpaper,” Weatherly recollects. “It sounds strange, but that scar is a reminder of good days with my grandfather. It seemed natural to continue on the construction path. How often can people say they have 10 years of experience at something by the age of 18?” Unfortunately, working with your hands has been devalued in our society and people often don’t consider it a career worth pursuing anymore. “That respect for artisanship that was honored during my grandfather’s time has been lost today,” says Weatherly. “I do my best to recognize and appreciate those skills in my employees, and it’s reflected in the work we do.” Weatherly is a class A licensed and insured general contractor, and his team includes an interior designer and highly skilled craftsmen. In business eleven years, this full-service design and construction company serves the Kansas City metro, offering custom remodels and new construction for both residential and commercial properties, all while providing a high level of service. Early in his career, Weatherly was part of a project that built a community of sustainable homes. He gained an appreciation for the subject matter. Lately, the company has seen an increase in inquiries for sustainable building solutions and designs focusing on the well-being of people. “Each year, I pursue additional education in sustainability principles so we can offer customers options that include these standards and provide the best in design, construction, and environmental comforts,” notes Weatherly. Laurie, a client, attests to Reilly’s Contracting’s focus on the customer.

“Reilly’s Contracting is the complete package with its in-house design team and experienced contractors. The team made us feel we were in good hands from demolition all the way through to completion.” “The remodeling process was collaborative and enjoyable. The team helped us piece together design options based on our budget and the modern look we wanted. The team made us feel we were in good hands from demolition all the way to completion.” Weatherly says one of his favorite projects he has worked on is a bit sentimental. “My partner and I have four children between us—three

In 2017, they welcomed a boy to their family who, unbeknownst to them, had a rare genetic disorder called Treacher Collins syndrome. “Confusing as the situation was, we knew our son would need aroundthe-clock medical care for years to come, and we didn’t have a comfortable space in our home for a new baby, medical equipment, and nursing staff,” Weatherly explains. “We decided to renovate a bedroom with an attached bathroom. Our new son required clean air with a high moisture content, which had to be contained within his room, so special construction was completed to keep his room airtight, heavily insulated, and moisture resistant. We also built a new mechanical room in the basement and installed new equipment to maintain constant filtered and humidified air for my son’s room.” The family wanted the renovation to match the Old English style of their home, but mix in a contemporary flair and create a brighter space. Weatherly incorporated wood paneling but painted it white to create a lighter, brighter feel. A contemporary connection was made to the style of the home with dark stain on the oak added to the ceiling and new, oversized doors. The new energy-efficient windows provided an

The bathroom was allowed to have its own identity, with exotic wood and contemporary tile and wall colors. “This project allowed us to combine our design talents with our construction knowledge and include sustainability principles as well, and my son now has a space that fits his needs,” says Weatherly. This example is incredibly unique, but the company’s work is so customized that it rarely has two similar projects. “This is what we enjoy most about our work—the constant requirement for innovation and creative thinking,” explains Weatherly. “We will never build a ‘cut and paste’ kind of space for our customers. We thrive on the uniqueness of each project.”

AUSTIN’S SPORTS BAR & GRILL

PROVES SPORTS & FARE ARE A GREAT TEAM WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTO BY STORM FRITZ PHOTOGRAPHY

M

ike Thayer began the original Austin’s Bar & Grill at 151st and MurLen in Olathe. The year was 1987 and he was 24 years old. Thirty years later, that sports bar and grill enjoyed a significant expansion and renovation.

Austin’s is known for its burgers, as any good sports bar should be. Which one is your favorite?

North on Lone Elm Road. We have live music and food, and there is a fireworks display held next door by the city of Olathe.

All of our burgers are 8-ounce certified angus beef, but I love our classic cheeseburger the most.

How are you taking things to the next level with your restaurants?

Mike brought on partner Brandon Blum in 2000, and the two then added a location in Gardner in 2005. The following year brought the addition of partner Kirk Adams. They then opened the third Austin’s Bar & Grill location in 2015 on Lone Elm Road in Olathe.

Cocktails are a big part of the mix. How do you keep things fresh on that end?

In the past year, we have added online ordering and delivery, and we work to ensure the same quality standards as if you were being served at one of our restaurant locations.

We sat down for a quick Q&A with Mike Thayer.

Why is Austin’s not “just another sports bar?” The vision was simple—open a sports establishment that strives every day to produce a steakhouse quality menu in a fun, sports atmosphere. The team also aspires to provide value to the customer with entrées like Alaskan salmon with wild rice, the KC Strip, and a twist on the wedge—our classic blue cheese wedge salad. Above all, we are all about sports!

We adjust our menu to seasonal items, and nowhere more so than our drink menu. We have some amazing winter drink options, including a “must try” banana bread martini, and we create a summer drink special menu each year as well. Of course, we feature a beer special every month too.

Tell us about your annual Independence Day celebration.

We try to respect a few of the large “family” holidays by closing two of our locations and celebrating at one location. We do this on Thanksgiving and Christmas so more of our staff spend time with family. Our favorite event of the year at Austin’s is our 4th of July bash at Austin’s

What’s your favorite thing about Kansas City? I love raising my family here. It’s been a pretty amazing time having all three of our major sports teams find success. And hey, right down the street in Lawrence there’s a great basketball program. I’m still on a big high from the Chiefs’ run this year, and Patrick Mahomes may be my favorite thing about Kansas City right now!

BEAUTY

ACNE THROUGH THE AGES

HOW TO AGE GRACEFULLY IF YOU HAVE HORMONAL ACNE WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER

S

pot. Pimple. Pustule. Bacne. Blackhead. Papule. And dare we utter it? Cyst. No matter what you call it, acne is hard to ignore. We’ve let the delusion that acne only plagues adolescents fester in pop culture long enough—it’s time we pop the beast. The truth of the matter is if there’s anything more consistent than run-ofthe-mill markers of life, it’s acne. Despite your age, your nutrition, and yes even your penchant for salicylic acid, zits can come up throughout all stages of life. Brian Matthys of Sunflower Dermatology and Medical Spa offers some insight on acne options for all ages. “Acne treatment can differ based on age but some of the basics are the same,” he explains. Your 20s: Wash your face. While you’re out being busy with your new 9-to-5, side hustles, and social life, don’t forget what you do to your face matters.

Despite your young age, you probably have your fair share of scars—acne and otherwise. Sticking to a basic routine with the help of a topical cream with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide should help your skin stay tame and help you stay on the go. However, now is the time to consider your long-term skincare plan. Matthys says when comparing age and acne type, it’s the latter (and its severity) that matters most. Acne can be treated with many topical agents, but if it is moderate or severe, it may require oral therapy like doxycycline. “Using heat can help soften the contents, and gentle pressure around the acne can help relieve the contents, pressure, and pain,” says Matthys. “Acne scarring is commonly self-induced, so a dermatologist can help decrease the acne so there is nothing to pick.” Treatments like lasers, microneedling, injectables, and fillers are options for anyone with scarring or acne pits.

Defy Age with Endermologie by

Sleek Physique Your 30s and 40s: Did you know that the term for the inner matter of a cyst is, in fact, “crud?” By this point, you’ve probably been through a lot of crud. Pregnancy crud. Post-breakup crud. Pre-flight crud. Post-flight crud. Pilates crud. But now? Now it’s time to help prevent the crud. You’ve probably noticed specific areas of your skin that always seem to break out—and when it’s cystic, it could lead to scarring. Targeting trouble areas can be dealt with in similar treatments as scarring, but in your 30s, it’s important to consider what you’re putting into your body and not just on your body.

Reduces cellulite Tones loose skin Slims fat pockets Improves skin clarity Increases exfoliation

“Acne can be complex to treat and has multiple influences, including hormones, stress, genetics, and diet,” Matthys says. “It can be controlled and cured if the right ‘recipe’ is executed.”

Relives minor muscle aches & pains

Make sure to get essential fatty acids (particularly omega-3s), antioxidants found in foods like avocados, kale, or butternut squash, zinc, or probiotics found in fermented foods. Bonus points if you sneak it into your kids’ lunches! Your 50s, 60s, and onward: You know the feeling when you send your firstborn off to college? The tell-tale signs of heartbreak like intense pain and deep pressure from within may mean you have more in common with the freshman class than you’d like to admit—and it’s probably in the form of an angry red bump. Life changes can be stress-inducing, and these hormonal flares can cause acne flare-ups.

Increases blood circulation Decreases stress & anxiety Lowers blood pressure Releases endorphins Improves sleep quality

Matthys says seeing a board-certified dermatologist is the best way to get the skin you want (at any time you want!)— especially since you can typically save time and money if you start at a dermatologist first. While your 20s were spent planning for today, in your 50s, you can start planning for forever … or at least for retirement! With all that free time, it’s time to take a closer look in your magnifying mirror. The skincare world is your oyster, and with treatments ranging from chemical peels and dermaplaning to hydrafacials and microdermabrasion, you’ll be on your way to self-care Sundays every day of the week! Before you head into your bathroom (or to your local dermatologist office), don’t forget about the first (and best) defense in skincare: “Sunscreen is the most important product for anyone’s long-term skin health,” says Matthys. “Sunscreen can help protect the skin and potentially prevent future damage and skin problems.” When you think about it, acne is just a small bump on the road when you have so much life to live—but treating your skin like an investment will always pay off in the long run!

CONFRONTING THE STRUGGLE WITH LIFELONG ALLERGIES WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

Imagine not being able to escape the anxiety of experiencing an allergic reaction. The reality for many people is struggling through daily activities instead of relishing in the joys of life. Many children grow up sitting at different tables in the school cafeteria or not attending school trips out of fear of an allergic reaction. Allergies have no age limit, though. They also affect people throughout adulthood. Seeing people in the community struggle with allergies led Dr. Neha Patel to specialize in this type of care. Her goal was to make this specialty accessible to everyone, because no one’s quality of life should suffer due to lack of medical care. Dr. Patel wanted to make a difference for people suffering with these conditions. She decided to do it in such a way that gave longterm relief of chronic conditions rather than just temporarily relieving symptoms.

“You shouldn’t have to wait forever to find a fix for your condition and begin to lead a normal life.”

Jace, who has been dealing with food allergies since he was six years old, spoke of the confidence Dr. Patel has brought into his life. He was scared of doing day-to-day tasks and of eating most foods. Now, with the oral immunotherapy treatments from Dr. Patel, he has been able to overcome his fears. “You feel safe and that there is a good chance you’ll be okay,” Jace explains. Dr. Patel also believes in seeing her patients in a timely manner. “You shouldn’t have to wait forever to find a fix for your condition and begin to lead a normal life,” she explains. With her natural ability to put people at ease, Dr. Patel is the one to help you and those you love overcome allergies, asthma, or immune conditions.

Dr. Patel tailors her treatments to each patient, mixing all of her own extracts in her office. “I look at what they’re positive to and give them exactly what they are allergic to, instead of giving them additional extracts they don’t need,” she explains. She works through the list of medications patients believe they are allergic to, and evaluates whether or not they are truly allergic. This process also eliminates health care costs associated with antibiotic resistance, as patients may have been told to avoid certain antibiotics. Dr. Patel’s patients applaud the care and emotional intelligence she brings to her work. “She has literally given me back my life,” Rita, a

been published in well-known journals, and even recently wrote a chapter in an immunology textbook. Her vast schooling and training have allowed her to treat a large spectrum of pediatric and adult allergy and immunology-related diseases. Dr. Patel uses her time outside of the office to volunteer and give back to the community. She is on the committee at the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology as well as the vice president for the Greater Kansas City Allergy Society. She gives talks within the community to inform people on allergies. One of her upcoming talks is at the Shawnee Mission West High School Women in Leadership Breakfast. This will take place March 6, 8 a.m.10 a.m., at the Shawnee Mission West Library.

7 7 THINGS

WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR GARDEN FOR SPRING

1 Pull out old weeds.

This simple starter task can take some planning. For best results, remove weeds and grass the season before you plan to plant your garden. (You can also do this right before planting, but you may have more weeds pop up throughout the season.)

2 Prepare your tools. Make sure your tools are ready for

the job! Whether you rinse them with water or even add some soap, using products with mineral spirits while you prep can help prevent splintered wooden handles later on.

3 Make sure your soil is ready for planting.

Gardening truly is a grassroots effort—especially since your soil can make or break your growing season. Before or early into the spring season, enrich your soil by applying fertilizer.

4 Plan ahead for beautiful blooms.

Are you dreaming of a beautiful summertime display filled with bountiful bouquets? Help ensure beautiful blooms and a colorful arrangement by planting in early spring everything you want blooming during summer.

5 Remove unwanted pests.

We wish we were joking, but to prep for longterm blooms you have to rid your garden of any pests like slugs, aphids, and snails before they have a chance to munch on your plants. Do yourself a favor and instead of googling the white vine weevil larvae, take our word that you don’t want them snacking on plant roots—or anywhere near your garden for that matter!

6 Add mulch.

Don’t let all that hard weed work go to waste! Add mulch to your garden wherever you can to help keep weeds from reclaiming their territory. Worried about burying seeds in the mulch? Instead of waiting for them to germinate outside, grow seedlings indoors and then transfer them to your prepared garden.

7 Plan for maintenance.

Last, but (hardly) not least, make a plan to tend to your garden throughout the season and stick to it. Keep an eye on weeds or pests that may have weaseled their way back in. We can’t blame them—with these tips, your garden is set to bloom beautifully all season long.

KACIE BREAKING BREAKUP NEWS

How do I tell people I’m getting a divorce? I don’t want to post some big drama-filled announcement on Facebook. But I also can’t stomach telling everyone I know face-to-face. I just want people to know so I can receive some support.

A friend once told me that when you announce a divorce, the married couples will say “I’m sorry” and the divorced couples will say “Congratulations!” There’s some truth to that. Your divorce is really no one’s business, but your friends and family will make it their business. Your breakup will affect the ones closest to you. It won’t affect their lives as much as yours, but there is still an impact. No, you don’t have to put anything on Facebook, but you do have to tell them. If you say nothing, people will catch on and there will be whispers. When they finally figure out what happened, they’re going to want details. It’s human nature. When you decide to tell the ones closest to you, it doesn’t have to be face-to-face. Tell them in an email, a text, or a phone call, but have your speech ready. You can say you’re getting divorced and would love the support as you go through this hard time. Remember, you don’t owe anyone an explanation and you don’t need to validate your reasons, but tell them. I’ll be the first to tell you—Congratulations!

SETTING RULES & BOUNDARIES FOR TEENS AND SOCIAL MEDIA WRITTEN BY SUZANNE LAMMERS

I

f you’ve ever worried about your teen spending too much time on social media, you’re not alone. According to Pew Research Center, social media use among 13-17-year-olds is nearly universal, with 97 percent using at least one social media platform. The same study found that 70 percent of teens check social media more than once a day, 16 percent check constantly, and 27 percent admit to doing so hourly.

dren’s Mercy. “One of the best ways for parents to teach adolescents is by modeling behavior and healthy habits. Coming up with a plan regarding social media use and screen time should be a family conversation.” Dr. Milkovich recommends parents start by understanding the social media apps their teens are using. Helpful descriptions, ratings, risks, and recommended ages for various social media apps can be found on websites such as smartsocial.com and commonsensemedia. com.

PARENTING CONT. Be aware of privacy settings so that your teen isn’t sharing their posts or location with strangers. Most importantly, let your teen know it’s okay to share passwords with you, but not with their friends. There are several basic rules that experts agree on: screen-free zones and times, device curfews, and designated charging spots outside of bedrooms. “Family meals and sleep are especially important for developing adolescents,” stresses Dr. Milkovich. “Keeping meals device-free allows conversation and parent-child relationship building. Not allowing devices in the bedroom minimizes sleep disruption and distractions throughout the night.” The good news is you’re not alone in figuring out the best way to deal with this relatively new aspect of parenting. “We hear daily from parents who are overwhelmed with raising digitally healthy kids,” says Krista Boan,

co-founder and communications director of START, a local nonprofit organization which stands for Stand Together And Rethink Technology. “Bringing parents together face-toface to be part of the conversation along with other members of the Kansas City community has enabled us to collect a treasure trove of stories and tips to help guide parents.” Founded by a group of Blue Valley parents, START helps families adopt healthy tech habits and navigate the current digital landscape by providing a roadmap similar to a driver’s education program with relevant information and helpful tips via its blog, newsletter, social media, and website (www. westartnow.org). “You wouldn’t hand over the keys and let your teen go straight to the highway when they start driving. You’d go to the parking lot and help them master one skill at a time,” says

Boan. “We take a similar approach with smartphones.” Boan notes that there isn’t one right way for every family. “One of the most powerful things you can do is approach your teen from an angle of empathy. This means taking an honest look at our own digital habits,” says Boan. “Your kids are watching what you’re doing. The challenge is to put down our phones, listen to our teens, and give them our attention.” Help your teens find a balance between online and offline activities. What do they value and enjoy? Try ditching the devices and spending time connecting with each other in social situations, family game nights, local outings, bike rides, sporting events, walks, or volunteer activities that deepen your connection to each other and the community. Chances are, they might “like” it.

SAY GOODBYE TO THE DAYS OF AWKWARDNESS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

How did you feel about your looks in middle school? Did they include metal across your teeth with colored rubber bands? It’s okay. That’s why they were called the “awkward years.” If you’re reading this, your awkward years are (hopefully) over. Unless you’re still wearing your retainer every night, though, your teeth are still shifting as you age. A middle schooler wearing braces seems to be a rite of passage for some, but there has been a surge in adults getting braces too. Braces not only straighten your teeth, they also correct your bite and improve your

smile. And metal braces are becoming a thing of the past, much like the awkward years, due to a new type of braces called Invisalign. Dr. Kelly Tabacchi, DDS, is the owner of Studio Smile Orthodontics in Overland Park. She has crafted a niche in the orthodontics world— she offers only Invisalign, and she offers them to anyone from kids to senior citizens.

Invisalign is a series of clear retainers called aligner trays. Each aligner tray has movement built into the clear mold. The aligner trays, worn 22 hours a day, are switched out weekly in a gradual progression, moving the teeth. Dr. Tabacchi sees patients every one to two months, refilling the weekly aligner trays as needed. Once treatment is complete, patients wear a clear retainer

for four months—again for 22 hours a day—to allow the bone to fill in. Then the patient moves on to a retainer only worn at night. The discomfort of traditional braces is a thing of the past. There’s no rubbing or tightening, no metal bracket to repair, and the hygiene is easier because a patient can floss and brush their teeth without maneuvering around wires. It’s a simple, hygienic option for seniors and kids with special needs. Even 3 millimeters of crowding in the mouth can harbor bacteria, which can enter your bloodstream and cause health issues. The best part is that treatment time is also less than traditional metal braces. The average treatment time is 10 months. One of Dr. Tabacchi’s most complicated cases would have taken three years using traditional braces. Instead, her patient was able to complete treatment in 18 months. Less treatment time also means less cost. Dr. Tabacchi’s prices are at or below the prices of traditional braces. She offers payment plans with zero percent interest and no money down. If a patient pays in full, they can save up to $1,000 in some cases. Some orthodontists may shy away from offering Invisalign due to the complexity of a patient’s needs. This results from a doctor’s experience level and how well they know the mechanics of treating a case using Invisalign. Dr. Tabacchi has made herself an expert in the field, and she can handle all levels of complexity. “The favorite part of my job is watching the transformation of the person,” says Dr. Tabacchi. “Every case is different, so my job is never boring. But getting a patient to the end result and

watching them love their smile is why I enjoy what I do.”

“The favorite part of my job is watching the transformation of the person. Getting a patient to the end result and watching them love their smile is why I love what I do.” Comfort begins at the first consultation. There are no impression molds with the gagging “goop” to take. It’s

as easy as waving a wand in front of your mouth. The highly accurate 3D scans provide Dr. Tabacchi a clear look at treatment options and an ability to see the final result. “We provide virtual appointments as well,” Dr. Tabacchi explains. “A patient can send us photos over our highly secure network. We are able to say if it’s a go or no-go on moving to the next weekly aligner tray without having the patient come in.” Dr. Tabacchi also provides an app called Smile Viewer where a patient can see the before and after view of their smile. Dr. Tabacchi welcomes new patients to take a look at her website where you can schedule your new patient consultation for free. Metal braces may be becoming a thing of the past, and so are the days of awkwardness.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

THE 10 COMMANDMENTS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

T

here are certain things you shouldn’t talk about at the dinner table—politics, money, and religion. The same goes for the Because I Said So column. Also, debating makes me want to crawl under the dinner table.

1. D on’t kill the inner child in you. Run through the sprin-

So instead of talking about religion, I want to talk about my personal 10 commandments. I’m not a prophet or a saint (nor an expert at anything), but I got you, Society. I got you. Here are my rules you should follow to be a good person.

2. D o not judge a person before you know them.

kler. Jump in rain puddles. Eat a donut for dinner. Take a nap. Have a complete meltdown in Target because life isn’t fair and all you really want is everything.

What’s that saying—Never judge a person before you walk in their shoes? Well you won’t fit in my shoes. I have big feet. Shy people are not snobby, rude, or a five-letter B word. They’re just

shy. They’re looking for a loud, extroverted friend. Be one.

3. N ever suggest anything is wrong with another parent’s kid. One mom told me my kid has ADHD and it would benefit her to be held back a grade. This mom is not a doctor nor a teacher. That’s why I gave her her own commandment.

4. Get some humor.

Laugh at life once in a while. Laugh at the crazy lady having a meltdown in Target.

5. L isten to good music when you’re upset. Music is a mood changer. It’s a natural medicine. And country music is still good music!

6. W ave “thank you” if someone lets you in their driving lane. Is this a dying form of gratitude? We’re in Kansas City. Act like the “nice Midwesterners” we are.

7. G ive someone a compliment every day. I don’t care who it is—your husband, your wife, a coworker. Follow the car that let you into their lane all the way to their house to tell them they look great today.

8. Personal interactions are better than social media. Use them. Social media isn’t bad, but remember it only shows one

version of a person. Have lunch with an old friend and you’ll be reminded that people really do look like a dumpster fire running on no sleep—even if their cute new baby has 500 likes.

9. Travel often.

But remember Kansas City is home.

10. O kay fine. Thou shalt not murder. Be a good person. Don’t murder.

GOOD TASTES

DON’T MESS WITH SANDWICH PERFECTION!

WRITTEN BY LESLI LUNDQUIST / PHOTO BY NICOLE BISSEY

This is a throwback to “Friends” in 1998, with Ross Geller referencing his perfect sandwich. “You-you-you … [trying to remain in control] You threw my sandwich away? My sandwich? [bellowing] MY SANDWICH?!” Yes, my family often cracks jokes about my Ross-like love for sandwiches. I also believe all sandwiches to be mouthwatering and highly satisfying. They are amazing cold, hot, grilled, toasted, with mayo, just cheese, loaded with veggies, on homemade bread, or when built to order. I’m serious when I say that sandwiches really are the best. This particular recipe version is at the top of my list: the Monte Cristo sandwich. We can thank the French for this little piece of heaven, which is brushed with an egg and milk mixture, then fried in butter. It is the best, really. Trust me.

Sliced Roast Beef Sandwiches with Caramelized Onions SERVES 4

Ingredients

Directions

1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup prepared horseradish Salt/pepper 4 tablespoons butter, divided 2 tablespoons olive oil 2-3 large onions, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 1 egg 1/4 cup milk 8 slices of fresh sourdough bread 1 pound good sliced roast beef 4 slices provolone cheese Double-burner griddle Nonstick cooking spray

Combine the sour cream and horseradish and mix well. Season to taste with salt and ground pepper. Store in the refrigerator, covered, until ready to serve. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm 2 tablespoons of butter and the olive oil. Add the onions, salt, and pepper, and cover and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are completely limp. Uncover the skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are golden brown and sweet. Do not allow them to burn. Remove the pan from the heat. Mix egg and milk; set aside.

Preheat the double-burner griddle to medium heat. Spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Lay 4 bread slices on a clean work surface. Place 2 to 3 pieces of roast beef on each slice. Add 1/4 cup of caramelized onions and a cheese slice to each slice, then top with the other 4 bread slices. Brush the top slices with the egg mixture. Place the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter on the preheated griddle to melt and spread. Place the sandwiches egg side down on the melted butter and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the bread is golden and cheese is melted. Brush the other sides with the egg mixture. Flip all sandwiches and repeat the cook cycle. Transfer the sandwiches to a cutting board and cut in half. Serve immediately with sour cream horseradish for dipping.
