Hello, and welcome to this ‘Far out retro’ edition of SupStyle Magazine. As we get our groove on and shimmy across the dance floor, we come across some gorgeous CC created by Sentate that takes us back to 1949. The vibe slowly changes, and brings us some stately editions as we ease into the waltz with GildedGhost. Nothing prepared us for the detail, and the effort that must have gone into the creation of these sets. Each set is linked directly back to the creators’ own pages, so you can download with ease. Without further ado, lets go retro.

Let’s get the party started! After all what is a party without food and furniture? Don’t forget the music, too. GildedGhostsSets the stage with these awesome 70’s inspired pieces, these are not them all, so make sure to head on over to download your party set. -CELLAR Nectar-Cellar is known for his Sims 3 custom content creations. SupStyle was lucky enough to catch up with him to find out more about the person behind the creations. Tell the reader more about yourself and how you started playing The Sims. My very first game was The Sims 3 on the Xbox 360 console. When I discovered the seemingly endless amount of CC available for the PC

version of the game, I immediately made the switch, and never looked back. I made my Tumblr account in 2012 or 2013 to download CC, share screenshots, and keep up with other people’s gorgeous games. I was still a high school student back then. I have stuck with The Sims 3 for all these years because it’s not only a fun game, it’s also an amazing creative outlet for storytelling, character creation, photography, fashion, interior design, you know, the list goes on!

What inspired you to finally start creating cc? When I started playing The Sims 3 again during the start of the pandemic, I had a hard time finding menswear CC that suited my tastes. With my renewed interest in the game, lots of time at home, and many fresh ideas, I thought it was the perfect time to buckle down and learn how to make the kind of clothes I wanted my sims to have. My CC is the result of my interest in fashion colliding with my love for the game. What's your favourite style of cc objects/clothing? My favourite style of CC is Maxis-match. I like it when my objects and clothes complement the game’s art style, while still looking modern and semi-realistic.

a nit-picky person. So, I’ll put a piece of clothing on my sim and start criticising it like, "oh, the fit on this is off." Those pants should be more tapered. I like the coat on this, but I hate the shirt. This jacket would look better with a different top. You know, I look at a piece of clothing and I think about what I like and what could be improved. Once I have a solid idea of what I want the final look to be, then I get to work on editing the meshes and textures or stitching different meshes together. I guess my process begins with my inner fashion critic refusing to shut up. I just follow what that voice tells me to do! Haha. Not only you're known for creating CC, but also for your beautiful Sim shots. How do you do it? What tips can you give to those who want to improve their Sims photos?

How would you describe your custom content creation I think composition, angles, process? and lighting are the most important things to focus on. FASHION THE STATEMENT SHIRT: A lot of people are styling their favourite pants with fun, outgoing statement shirts that define their personality. Don’t be afraid to find that shirt that expresses your style.

THE ROCK ERA: Every wardrobe needs a little black dress. This dress can even be a bad-ass leather dress. You can even add a statement belt to the dress to make it stand out more.

19

SUPSTYLEMGZ

N ADVICE ALL ABOUT THE STRIPES: Have fun finding patterns. Some patterns you may like may not be in the sections you are looking in. The categories "menswear" and "womenswear" shouldn't dictate how you shop. Take time to play with colours and shapes to find what looks great on your unique body.

BLAZER AND PANTS: Clashing textures and prints make a bold fashion statement. Start small with neutral patterns like stripes and lowkey textures like leather and knits, adding in the sequins and paisleys in small amounts (like a scarf, tie, or clutch) until you learn what works for you.

A RUBANENKO My name is Alina Rubanenko. I was born and currently living in Ukraine, in one of the largest cities called Dnipro. I am an artist and also have a degree in electronics. My life consists of an endless search for myself and various activities. I also paint with oil and love to write stories. But one thing that is stable in my life is Sims. Sims has been in my life for a long time. As a hobby, a parallel life, a creative studio for creating worlds. The first meeting with Sims took place back in school,

with Sims 1, then meeting with Sims 2. Sims 3 passed me by, but Sims 4 captured my creative soul. I almost never played the game itself. In the beginning, a little bit of Sims 2, and then I became a content creator, and Sims for me forever turned into the tool of realisation of my creativity. I never hid my real name, but I always had the nickname Trinity. Many people in the Sims 2 world know me by this nickname. But some time ago, I stopped being a Trinity. I began to

realise that this long-term project was losing its past meaning to me. So now, I am Sonechko, which in Ukrainian means the Sun. The Sims game is not just a game, because it encouraged me to study various programs and directed me to digital art. First, I started to take Sims 2 screenshots and tried to draw some pictures with their help. This prompted me to study Photoshop and explore digital painting. I created Sims artworks, combining different parts of screenshots and

drawing the necessary parts. And then, it was not enough for me. I decided to learn how to do poses for Sims 2 to make the process of creating pictures easier. And this happened in 2014. Since then, I have been constantly creating poses for Sims 2, and in 2019, I became interested in Sims 4. It was this part of the game that inspired me to study Blender. At first, I just played the game itself, Sims 4. Rarely, periodically. I created interiors and changed the clothes of the characters, just for fun. About two years later, I started thinking about creating stuff and studying the necessary programs. And now, I'm creating TS4 art, which helps me survive terrible times of war. In general, creativity in Sims has always helped me to survive difficult and scary moments of my life. The serious illnesses I went through, the troubles in life, even the Covid and the consequences after it seemed to be the most terrible. But it turned out that it was all trifles compared to the full-scale war that broke out in our lives. So, I hope that even now, Sims will help me to survive all the pain… SUPSTYLEMGZ

26

My Sims story is very long, it is impossible to tell everything briefly. But, I feel like it's just beginning, that I open a new chapter and start a new life. Who am I? Already a new person with whom I also need to meet. But always Alina and always from Ukraine.

Our very own Grace (asgracecreates) caught up with the very talented Ruchellsims to find out more about her CC journey. 1. Hello there! You go by the name Ruchellsims, but do you have a nickname here in the Sims community? Yes, my alter ego is Sayumi Ruchell. 2. Where are you from? And your nationality? I'm from Brazil. 3. What made you decide to be a custom content (CC) maker of The Sims 4?

I created a profile of Sayumi Ruchell on Facebook many years ago. Initially, I just wanted to be a creator to add something to her story, but then, with the help of @redheadsims, who is my friend and companion in the story, I found a way to express myself by creating content. 4. How long did you learn CC making? I started creating hair textures and it was a success, then I discovered that I could do more. To get to the level I am today, took at least 2 years, as I always took everything as a joke.

5. Have you tried creating

clothing or accessories for Sims 4? If so, what are those? Yes, before the shoes, I created some accessories and clothes. You may check my blog or Simsdom. 6. Where do you get inspiration for CC making? I only create what I like, I look for trends on Pinterest, Instagram, that maintain a style standard for my brand. 7. Have you tried making CCs inspired by retro style? Yes, sometimes I make shoes from the 80s, 90s, 2000s, I love them. 8. What can we expect from you in the coming months as a CC maker? Lots of unisex content, for everyone. 9. Trivia question: How long have you been playing The Sims 4? What is your favourite thing to do in The Sims 4? I think about 5 or 6 years ago. I've always loved filling the game with custom content and tidying up my Sim, that's what I love most.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FASHION WITHIN THE SIMS FRANCHISE Let’s talk about wardrobes.

accessories from real-life clothing brands such as H&M, Diesel, and Admittedly, I’m not a connoisseur of Moschino. More recently, we’ve seen Kits for The Sims 4 featuring a small fashion myself, only having just selection of clothing ranging from recently found inspiration for my celebrating Brazilian Carnaval spirit own style from Urban Outfitters, Pull and Bear, Monki, Minga London, inspired by Pabllo Vittar, to clothing inspired by various real-life locations my local vintage stores, and of including Seoul airport fashions in course, Pinterest. However, as I Korea and Mumbai streetwear, to 90s love all things retro regarding The inspired retro athleisure. Sims, I’ve decided to take yet another trip down memory lane, I hadn’t started playing The Sims looking back at some of the different clothing styles throughout until around 2006, so well into the 2000s era. Granted, I was only a wee the history of The Sims. thing, so my memories of early 2000s fashion include tops with bell and Fashion within The Sims franchise shifted significantly throughout the butterfly sleeves, mini denim skirts, chunky sandals, and flared trousers years, allowing for a progressively lots of flared trousers. We’ve seen stuff packs feature clothing items and Items of clothing in Create-A-Sim were named Skins. These were essentially a series of 256 colour (8-bit) bitmap images corresponding to its numbered mesh file. The game only 49

displayed very basic options, consisting of three skin tones per style; light, medium, and dark, and three body shapes; fat, fit, and skn (skinny), and a separate body shape, chd, for children. With a suitable graphic designing programme such as Adobe Photoshop or even the basic Microsoft Paint, and The Sims Creator (a separate tool shipped with The Sims Deluxe Edition, and The Sims Complete Collection) Simmers could create their own skins and heads, compatible with the game. Meshes for new clothing shapes could also be created using an appropriate and compatible programme.

come back too! At random, a female Sim can change into the blue recolour of this costume, which reminds me of a similar co-ord set I found recently on Boohoo.com! Understandably, when The Sims was first released, it’s clear the developers wanted to establish some sort of story creation with a plethora of different outfits. However, as the game progressed, themed expansion packs added corresponding themed outfits. The Sims 2 vastly expanded its choices of clothing, including separate tops and bottoms, as well as complete outfits. The graphic files were upgraded to 3D and all Simmers had the option to create their own clothing items using The Sims 2 Bodyshop with a suitable graphics editor and/or mesh creating software, similarly to The Sims Creator. A selection of previous clothing was also converted for The Sims 2.

Bitmap image Corresponding to the 2D model in the Sims

One of my favourite items shipped with House Party was the PortaParody Costume Trunk. Notably, some garments within this costume trunk are also available in Create-ASim, such as this pink marble print co-ord. This “Disco” piece stood out for me particularly, as not only has the marble print returned to highend fashion in 2021, but also the style of the top and the flares have SUPSTYLEMGZ

Clothing styles were also inspired by real-life stars such as this Avril Lavigne-inspired outfit featured in her attendance to the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. What surprised me the most during my research, was just how accurate this design was to the real thing! Absolutely shook.

The camo print trousers are also available as separate bottoms, along with plain variants. I remember these coming back into fashion during the height of the pandemic in 2020, and yes, I bought a pair, and no, I haven’t found the confidence to wear them just yet!

Other items resurfacing in the online fashion world are bucket hats, American football jerseys and flared jeans, and the high school cheerleader outfits were inspired by a lot of high school teen romcoms. In addition, with over 100 new clothing items, The Sims 2 H&M Fashion Stuff Pack was the first (and in my opinion, the best) stuff pack in the franchise to feature clothing from a real-life clothing brand. I’ve also noticed what I believe to be Juicy Coutureinspired tracksuits for teens and young adults, and faux fur outfits shipped with Glamour Life Stuff Pack thrown into the mix as well. The Sims 3 introduced an entirely new mode of customisation through Create-A-Style. Colours and patterns could be added to premade meshes from the base game, giving Simmers the creative freedom to customise pretty much anything and everything. I did find some pre-made items of clothing questionable when I first played the game upon release in 2009 and sought to spend my Sim points on more aesthetically pleasing styles in The Sims 3 Store. This online extension allowed Simmers to “shop” for separate items not included in packs. However, I only ever spent my points on discounted items as I am a frugal Simmer. Unpopular opinion, but my favourite fashions of The Sims 3,

were included in Into The Future. The combination of the retrofuturistic with the Victorian inspired elements just suited the Utopian variation of Oasis Landing, immaculately. This dress, for example, includes an exposed section of a Victorianinspired caged bustle skirt, which I love. In addition, the edges of this exposure are covered in a floral pattern, suggesting Some styles are definitely seen in today’s fashion world, such as the detailing on the bottoms reflecting modern-day sports leggings. The jacket is definitely something I can see coming to the fashion world as a formal accessory. Ultimately, Create-A-Style

curation of different outfits. However, The Sims 4 felt like the franchise had taken a massive step backwards in this aspect. Personally, The Sims 4 clothing choices felt more restrictive for me. With the removal of Create-A-Style, the patterns and colours available were also heavily limited. Was this due to the stability of the game, or to allow for more accessibility for the lower-end spec machines? Possibly in both respects. There have been multiple issues with the top and bottom combinations not “snapping” together correctly, or bottoms covering boots, instead of being tucked in. However, as the game expanded, so did the inclusion of styles. The Laundry Day stuff pack showcased some of my favourite Bohemian styles from the late 2010s and included a pair of jeans of similar variety that I absolutely adored in The Sims: Bustin Out. Discover University also had a selection of items that I would always use as

revolutionised the creative world in The Sims franchise, with this element allowing full customisation and

they were very modern. Sports leggings, leather jackets, and denim pinafores were clothes I would wear during my university days, so there’s also an element of nostalgia there for me.

The Iconic Red Dress Throughout the ages Obviously, the best example of one outfit that has altered throughout the franchise is none other than Bella Goth’s iconic dress. First shown in The Sims, this easily recognisable garment has become the basic foundational design for all four iterations of the game, and in its console variations too. Bella Goth’s iconic midi tube dress appealed to the male audience of the era with its figure-hugging, hourglass design. The red hues, with darker ribbonlike details, connote romance, lust, desire, and leadership; qualities that Bella displays within the game. It also suggests danger or mystery, which reflects the storylines suggested in The Sims 2. Paired with sheer tights and square toe ballet shoes, this is an outfit that can easily be replicated in today’s society, with both the garment and accessories coming full circle, once again.

53

SUPSTYLEMGZ

The console variant of The Sims also features a converted 3D version of the dress. However, The Sims: Bustin’ Out features a separate top and bottoms to create the “dress”. In this iteration, the style focuses on a strapless corset style top, and pencil skirt with a side slit. While the promotional photo of Bella Goth shows her dress as a deep red, in-game the colour is hot pink, mirroring the pink highlights in Bella’s now brown hair with auburn tones. Similarly to Bustin’ Out, The Sims 2 also uses a separate top and bottoms to create the look. This version is a 3D conversion of its predecessor, with a slightly brighter colouring and a velvety-textured finish. The trim, accessories and tights are of similar design with

the patent flats being red instead of black, complementing the dress.

FINAL NOTE

The Sims 3 is set fifty years before its predecessors, and therefore, Bella is only a child. Despite this, the developers have followed suit and included a more appropriate dress for a child.

Granted, this article was slightly challenging to produce; it’s both fantastic and unfortunate that there is so much to talk about regarding the changes in fashion and style within The Sims franchise - I cannot fit it all into one article! But on a final note, it is incredibly interesting to find recycled styles in the older games, but then coming full circle in the newer iterations of the game. I can’t wait to see if custom content creators convert some of the older styles mentioned for The Sims 4. We are fortunate to see these styles come back to our gameplay through updated software and gaming engines.

Finally, Bella’s dress is only slightly altered in the most recent iteration of the game. In The Sims 4, Bella sports a bright tube mini dress, with black block heels. There is a ruched detailing on the skirt, and similarly to all garments, there is the darker red trim emphasising the chest. Unlike previous outfits, this one is a lot shorter in length, keeping in time with the current style of dresses. Which one is your favourite? Personally, mine is from The Sims. The dress denotes a sense of elegance and leadership, showing Bella Goth’s mysterious qualities.

The topic in itself has the potential to become a series or a lengthy Youtube video. If this is something that Simmers want, then I’d be happy to do it. As always, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this article as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Take care, and happy Simming! Melissa x
