INTR O D U CT I O N TO SI I T Brief Introduction to SIIT Sydney Institute of Interpreting and Translating (SIIT) is a dedicated and specialised training organisation for training professional interpreters and translators. The programs offered at SIIT have been specifically designed to cater for the needs of students who are interested in careers as interpreters and translators. With dedicated trainers and caring administrative staff, SIIT provides students with a nurturing and conducive atmosphere for their studies and career development. SIIT Sydney – SIIT Sydney Campus is located at level 5, 841 George Street, Sydney NSW, near Central Railway Station. SIIT Sydney campus is in a colourful and multicultural part of Sydney, within comfortable walking distance of Sydney Darling Harbour, the Chinese Garden, the Market City complex and Chinatown. It is also very close to the city’s main transport, Central and Town Hall train stations, and is close to education, sports, government and tourist facilities.

Counselling services The student counselling service at SIIT is designed to assist students in dealing with a wide range of problems including homesickness, managing stress, handling conflicts, emotional issues, improving motivation, enhancing study skills, organising study time and any other issue that may be of concern to the student. Student Services Officers are well acquainted with the pressures and stress of student life and are the first point of contact for any assistance. If they are not able to help student with a particular situation or matter they will refer the student to appropriate personnel for further consultation. This may be the SIIT PEO/Course Coordinator or the Academic Manager. If the PEO feels the need for a student to be referred to a professional counsellor, a reliable and qualified social worker or psychologist will be recommended. SIIT has an agreement with a bachelor degree trained psychologist on a needs basis. To access these services please contact the PEO. Generally, students would not be expected to pay for these services.

Medical Issues SIIT has an up to date list of medical professionals who are within easy access of the campus. Any student with medical concerns should inform the Student Services Officer, who will assist them in finding appropriate medical assistance. There is a list of near-by medical clinics on the bulletin board near reception. Please talk to Student Services for more help and assistance in this matter. Alternatively, you can google search for medical centres close to SIIT or near your accommodation.

Social Programs SIIT organizes social events throughout the year to

provide opportunities for all students to mingle and socialize. These events may range from cultural and sightseeing events, speech contests, to dinners, excursions and sporting events. Examples include Christmas parties, role-play competitions, mid-autumn festivals and speech contests etc.

Employment Assistance SIIT keeps in close contact with local business and industry groups to identify suitable employment opportunities for enrolled students. SIIT will assist students in preparing for job readiness by activities, such as resume and interview preparation, to assist students gaining employment.

The entry requirement for this qualification is one of the following: 1. Completion of 10363NAT Certificate II in Spoken and Written English; 1+ across the four macro skills of the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) scale; or 2. IELTS test score of not less than 4.5 in any of the four macro skills; or 3. Entry Examination – a diagnostic screening assessment tasks that determine learners meet the requirements of Band C for pace: 4. The entry requirement can be met by evidence of equivalent competency to the above units through recognition of prior learning (RPL). The Advanced Diploma of Translating reflects the skills and knowledge required to translate special-purpose texts from one language to another to convey information written using specific terminology for a specific audience. Successful graduates of this qualification may be able to access employment positions in the public and private sectors as Translators, either on a freelance or contract basis. In addition, many graduates may perform some translating as part of their principal duties in jobs requiring translating, bilingual and cross-cultural communication skills in the health and community services, business, tourism, public relations, the medical profession, law and foreign affairs.

Applicants may gain entrance to the course with the following: 1. A recognized Degree or Diploma in any discipline, or; 2. NAATI accreditation at para-professional level in the relevant language(s), or; 3. proven and documented work experience in translating and; 4. achieve at least 70% at an entry examination which is prepared and assessed according to NAATI interpreting professional standards. QUA L I F I CATI ON PAT HWAY Australian National Recognition of qualifications policy requires that every Registered Training Organization (RTO) recognise qualifications or Statements of Attainment issued by another RTO, where they are the same as the competencies in the program that students are enrolled in. Many employment opportunities will require a qualified translator or / and interpreter to have NAATI accreditations. This might be achieved through completing NAATI Approved qualifications at Sydney Institute of Interpreting and Translating (SIIT). SIIT has a series of pathways approved for our Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas in Interpreting and Translation for a Bachelor of Arts (Interpreting and Translation) degree at the University of Western Sydney (UWS). This means that students who complete a qualification at SIIT may receive credits if they wish to continue their study for the Bachelor of Arts (Interpreting and Translating) degree at the University of Western Sydney. Step one: Obtaining Pre-enrolment Information All prospective students are given a copy of student handbook prior to enrolling in a particular course of study. The main intention is for prospective students to understand and have a basic knowhow of what to expect before they enrol with SIIT. A copy of student handbook can be emailed to the student or a student can download this document from the SIIT website by clicking on the following link http://www.siit.nsw.edu.au/?page_id=123

Step two: Consider Applying for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process through which the skills, knowledge and work experience of the students can be counted towards the achievement of a qualification or unit of competency. RPL involves a formal assessment process which focuses on a student’s ability to demonstrate that he/she already has the required level of skills, knowledge and work experience to meet the requirements for competency in a unit/s of study within a course offered by SIIT. If the evidence provided by a student clearly proves they already have the skills and knowledge relating to a unit of competency, they will receive a credit for that unit and will not be required to study that unit. Please refer to RPL section of this document for information regarding this.

Step Three: Completion of Application Form If a student wishes to apply for the course, they should carefully read the entry requirements to determine if they are eligible to apply. For details of the entry requirements please refer to ‘Entry Requirement’ section of this document. Eligible students should complete the application form by downloading one from our website at: http://www.siit.nsw.edu.au/?page_id=140 or by sending a request via e-mail to info@siit.nsw.edu.au. The completed application form with all supporting documents should be sent to SIIT via e-mail to admission@siit.nsw.edu.au or via post to Level 5, 841 George Street, Sydney 2000, for processing. Students will need to provide original or certified copies of the documents together with the completed application for their enrolment application to be assessed. Originals will be sited, copied, and verified as true copies by the PEO: Documents required may include: • Proof of Identification documents such as a passport, driver’s license, etc. • Certified copies of previous qualifications (including certificates, academic transcripts etc.) • Working experience certificate (including the name, address and contact details of the organisation or person which provides such certificate etc.) • Original or certified copy of IELTS test report. • Any other form of English level evidence according to Australian standards.

Documents not in English must be accompanied with certified translation by a NAATI accredited translator.

Step Four: Entry Examination Arrangements All potential applicants at this time will be requested to sit for an entry examination that is administered by a qualified ELICOS Trainer or an independent ELICOS Provider or a NAATI Accredited translator/interpreter, to assess their eligibility for the qualifications that they are applying for. For Interpreting and Translating Students Only The Advanced Diploma of Translating entry examination will consist of one or two passages from LOTE into English and/or one or two passages from English into LOTE at NAATI translation professional level. Students will have to achieve 70 percent or higher in order to be admitted into the program. The Diploma of Interpreting entry examination consists of two dialogues at NAATI paraprofessional interpreting testing format between LOTE and English. Students will have to achieve 50 percent or higher in order to be admitted into the program. The Advanced Diploma of Interpreting entry examination will consist of two dialogues at NAATI professional interpreting level between LOTE and English. Students will have to achieve 70 percent or higher in order to be admitted into the program. If the prospective student is located overseas an entry examination will be sent to the student via e-mail. If an appointed agent is not far from where the student is located, students will have to attend agent’s office to complete the entry examination. All students are expected to apply personal integrity while sitting for the entry exam under strict examination conditions. However, for Interpreting courses, SIIT will organise a telephone interview with students to conduct the speaking part of the examination. The entry examination will determine whether prospective students will be admitted into the program. If they cannot meet the entry requirements, recommendations will be made advising them to either take further language training or complete other required training before being admitted into the programs offered at SIIT.

The entry examination will be conducted and assessed in an independent and ethical manner.

Step 5: Enrolment Documents Verification Procedures When a student has passed the entry examination, SIIT will assess whether the student’s qualifications, experience and English language proficiency are appropriate for the course for which enrolment is sought. All the relevant documents provided by the student will also be assessed and verified at this stage by the PEO. The verification might include a reference check, telephone or face-to-face interview with the student or a request for the qualifications to be verified by the Australian National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) or Vocational Education and Training Assessment provide (VETAssess). The student can proceed to next step only if they are successful at this stage and all their documents are found to be correct, authentic and reliable.

Step 6: Issuing Letter of Offer

All the original versions of documents will be verified and true verified copies will be stored in the student’s admin file for future reference.

Step 7: Accepting the Letter of Offer Upon receiving Letter of Offer, the student will need to carefully read and agree with the terms and conditions listed on this document. At this point it is requirement for the student to: • Sign and return a signed copy of the Letter of Offer to the SIIT via email at info@siit.nsw.edu.au or in person to the • Student Services Officer. Pay relevant tuition fee(s) as is listed on the Letter of Offer Please note that the agreement to accept the offer must be signed and returned to SIIT for the student’s enrolment to be confirmed.

Step 8: Confirmation of Enrolment or electronic Confirmation of Enrolment on successful completion of Step 7: Accepting the Letter of Offer. Please note that acceptance of the Letter of Offer serves as a binding contract between SIIT and the student.

Step 9: Orientation Day A compulsory Orientation Day Program is arranged for all students before course commencement. Following activities will take place on the Orientation day: 1. Emergency evacuation directions & protocols 2. Introduction and welcome by academic and administrative staff. 3. Student registration process. 4. Introduction to Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC). 5. Introduction to health and welfare services. 6. Introduction to course information, timetable, learning & assessment strategies, academic intervention strategies etc. 7. Introduction to student rights and responsibilities at SIIT. 8. Introduction to SIIT’s complaints and appeals process. 9. Introduction to library & computer facilities. 10. Introduction to student support services including on how to access student counselling facilities. 11. Learner needs survey/interview session. 12. Details on student visa conditions regarding course progress and attendance. 13. Photo session with students for the SIIT to generate student ID cards. Students who miss the orientation day program and have valid or compassionate and compelling reason for their absence will be given another opportunity to attend a second orientation program, this orientation will be held before course commencement and if the student fails to attend the orientation program, for the second time may risk to have their enrolment cancelled unless the absence has been pre-approved by the PEO.

Step 10: Course Commencement date and time All students will be given information regarding their course commencement date and time. They are also given details of their class room and trainer/assessor.

Telegraphic transfer is the main method of payment used by international students for overseas payment. International Telegraphic Transfer attracts an extra AUD$20 processing fee.
