Welcome to

Signature After almost eight months of darkness, this November the MAX Theatre lit up once again for three days as we filmed Simply Sondheim. It was an extraordinary moment for all of us in the Theatre. Stephen Sondheim is Signature’s signature and to hear his music burst forth from a full orchestra felt like the most essential homecoming we could have imagined.

Filming a theatrical production came with many new challenges, as we ventured into a new medium in the midst of a pandemic that required the strictest of safety protocols. While it was wonderful to be back in a room creating art again, we all long for the day when two actors singing a love duet can touch again and a large group of actors can create stage pictures beyond straight lines.

For those who may be discovering Signature Theatre for the first time through this new digital landscape, we want to give you a little background on Signature and Sondheim. Over the past 30 years, Signature has produced more of Stephen Sondheim’s work than any other theater in the United States. Annually, we present the Stephen Sondheim Award to a theatre legend; past recipients have included Angela Lansbury, Audra McDonald, Hal Prince, and Jonathan Tunick, whose original orchestrations you will hear in Simply Sondheim. As a sign of our special relationship, Mr. Sondheim gave permission to film and release this theatrical concert that was created especially for Signature Theatre. We are humbled and grateful for his support and trust in us.

Those challenges were nothing in comparison to the joy of being back in a room together. The company shed many tears of joy the first time they heard a live orchestra play again. The sound of masked laughter filled the room as Norm Lewis recounted stories of his time playing the title character in our 1999 production of Sweeney Todd. And as the cameras rolled you could feel the desire from everyone to do their very best work, as everyone knew this experience was so rare. There was so much joy, so much magic—and so much hope in the room. We hope that you feel the same joy, magic and hope. Thank you for joining us for Simply Sondheim—and welcome home.

Passionate Funny Generous Considerate Kind Special A Dear Friend

The words listed above are just a few that first come to mind when you think of the great Victor Shargai who passed away on December 24, 2019. Victor was a great supporter and friend of Signature Theatre. He started as an audience member, then became a donor and ultimately joined our Board of Directors in 2004, where he served until becoming a member of our Emeritus Board in 2012. When we think of Victor, we have many great memories of his laugh, his thoughtful critiques and his unwavering support—but the biggest We miss those calls, thing that Victor was to all of us was a bridgebuilder. Victor was a miss his mischievous conduit for so many relationships—he constantly worked to connect smile and miss his artists, supporters and friends to our Theatre and to the theater generous, kind spirit. community at large. He built bridges everywhere: hosting dinners in his home to make introductions among his many contacts; meeting and greeting friends and strangers alike at Opening Nights; chairing events all around town—including our Sondheim Award Gala in 2018; cheerleading for and promoting productions and artists all around the area.

Remembering Victor Shargai

Victor and his husband Craig Pascal attended an incredible number of performances all year round, because there wasn’t a theatre in town that Victor didn’t want to support. He never had a favorite organization, but he did have favorite productions—and he loved to talk about them. Having studied costume design, Victor had an especially discerning eye for costumes, and he was never shy with his opinions about all aspects of our work. Though he didn’t love everything Signature did, it was always nice when our phones would ring with Victor’s voice on the other end giving his review of our current production. During the beginning of our 30th Anniversary Season he shared, “I don’t know how you continue to do it, Signature just gets better and better.” Well, Victor, we continue to get better in part because of your incredible support and leadership over the years. We miss those calls, miss his mischievous smile and miss his generous, kind spirit. We are so grateful for all the bridges Victor built to and from Signature, and we are proud that this Theatre has played a small part in his amazing legacy. We dedicate Simply Sondheim to Victor Shargai—passionate, dedicated supporter of Signature and the entire DC arts community.

Leadership Maggie Boland (Managing Director) joined the Signature Theatre staff in May 2008. Prior to joining Signature, Maggie spent nearly 10 years at Arena Stage in increasingly senior positions, beginning as Marketing Director, responsible for Arena’s earned income, and assuming oversight of the $3 million+ Annual Fund and $125 million Next Stage Campaign in subsequent seasons as the Director of External Affairs. Prior to joining Arena Stage, Maggie worked on Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre Company for nearly six years, most recently as the Director of Annual Giving, responsible for raising more than $3.5 million annually. Maggie also participated extensively in Roundabout’s capital campaign to fund the restoration and renovation of the American Airlines Theatre. She was named a recipient of 2016 Women Who Mean Business award from the Washington Business Journal. Maggie graduated magna cum laude from Boston College’s Honors Program with a BA in English; she is a member of the Board of Directors of TheatreWashington and serves as Vice President of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT).
