WELCOME TO SIGNATURE Welcome to Signature Theatre and our production of Penelope. This witty, thoughtful musical was born during the pandemic. Creator Alex Bechtel was forced to quarantine away from his partner with no end in sight and was comforted by the story of Penelope in The Odyssey. Penelope waits for twenty years while her husband, Odysseus, fights in the Trojan War and then has a series of adventures on his journey home. Like Penelope at her loom, Bechtel, with co-creators Eva Steinmetz (also the director) and Grace McLean, wove what started as a concept album into a rich, beautiful musical that reimagines this classical Greek myth as a love letter to all those who must wait. We are thrilled to welcome Jessica Phillips to our stage to bring to life this character who has captivated the world for almost 3,000 years. As Emily Wilson, the first woman to translate The Odyssey into English, said of Penelope, “She’s canny, she’s strongwilled, she has grit, she has a vivid imagination, she’s loyal, she’s a competent, mostly single mother who shows deep love for her difficult, moody son, and she keeps a big and complex household running for two decades. You have to love her for all these things, and I do.” However, the original epic poem never delves into Penelope’s inner thoughts, only her actions. This has allowed there to be many different interpretations of her character. Penelope has served as artistic inspiration for centuries, and you can read more about her in the pages that follow. Presenting this musical in the ARK allows us to explore the vulnerability and intimacy of Penelope’s story in a way that is unique to Signature. In a house that seats fewer than 100, audiences are only a few feet away from the stage. You can see Penelope’s every expression, feel her every movement and hear her every sigh. All her small moments somehow become large. The audience surrounds Penelope as if they are the sea surrounding the shore where she would spend so much of her time. Our ARK Theatre is a small space on purpose – it invokes a meaningful reciprocity between actor and audience. Together, we share every moment: the longing, the humor, and the tedium of Penelope’s day. This connection between audience and performer is an important tenet of Signature’s mission, and we are grateful to have you in today's audience. But now, the time has come for our wait to end. Enjoy the show.

A Very Long Wait Penelope, the long-suffering wife of Odysseus featured in Homer's Odyssey, has served as an artistic inspiration for almost 3,000 years. In The Odyssey, Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, goes on a series of adventures as he spends a decade returning home from the Trojan War. He spent a previous 10 years fighting in said war (the story of The Illiad) for a total of 20 years away from home. During this time Penelope is stuck at home waiting for him, but never knowing where he was or if he would ever return. After years of no news, a series of suitors arrive at her home seeking her hand and the kingdom. She refuses them, and cleverly contrived the excuse of weaving a funeral shroud and declaring she would not marry until its completion. She then spent her days weaving, but at night, after the suiters were asleep, she unraveled her progress. The Odyssey focuses most on Odysseus’s adventures (it is named after him) and as Emily Wilson, the first woman to translate The Odyssey into English noted, his work is all about doing while Penelope’s is all about standing still. “Her work is all about undoing. It’s all about hiding herself, hiding her desires, and creating something whose only purpose is to get nowhere.” She, and the feminine ideals she is professed to represent—those of the faithful wife—have fascinated artists and scholars for centuries. Recently, she has received a resurgence of popularity. Just who was this woman whose most enduring legacy was to…wait? In Greek mythology, Penelope is known by her relations to the men in her life. She is the daughter of Icarius of Sparta, then the wife of Odysseus, and finally the mother of Telemachus. To dissuade the suitors that arrive seeking her hand, she even employs another man—the funeral shroud is for her father-in-law, Laertes. The one trait that has defined her through much of history is fidelity—that of the patiently waiting wife whose devotion knows no end—the ideal woman. Throughout her 20 years waiting—and never knowing if she would ever see Odysseus again—Penelope remained faithful (unlike her husband). Day in and out she was subjected to the onslaught of suitors who refused to leave her house. As a woman in Ancient Greece, she was unable to force them to leave her home or respect her rejection. She was trapped by her circumstances, and, despite her intelligence and resourcefulness, unable to change them because of her gender. While people are quick to note her brilliance, determination and strong will, a modern interpretation can forget how confined she was by her social position and situation. In ancient art, Penelope is seen with her head down in her hands and crossing her legs, a symbol of her faithfulness. This pose is unusual for any other figure in antiquity and is a clear indicator that she is the subject. In the Renaissance times and after, Penelope gets to raise her head, but is still focused on her weaving or her trickery of her suitors. However, in the last 20 years, Penelope has once again captivated imaginations—and gained a different interpretation that has been guided by women. In Margaret Atwood’s 2006 novel

The Penelopiad, The Odyssey is told from Penelope’s point of view. In 2017, Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey brought new understanding into Penelope’s experience. There are even multiple recent musicals told from Penelope’s point of view—all espousing a distinctive approach to her story and character. So, just who was Penelope? The original poem does not divulge Penelope’s inner thoughts. Translators throughout centuries have added different interpretations. So has societal progress in women’s rights and the opportunity for women to interpret this character. As our ideas of Penelope have changed and shifted throughout history, perhaps more will be discovered in the years ahead. All we have to do is…wait.

Previous translation of The Odyssey “O fortunate Odysseus, master mariner and soldier, blessed son of old Laertes! The girl you brought home made a valiant wife! True to her husband’s honor and her own, Penelope, Ikarios’ faithful daughter! The very gods themselves will sing her story for men on earth—mistress of her own heart, Penelope!”

Emily Wilson’s translation of the same passage “Lucky you, cunning Odysseus: you got yourself a wife of virtue—great Penelope. How principled she was, that she remembered her husband all those years! Her fame will live forever, and the deathless gods will make a poem to delight all those on earth about intelligent Penelope.”

We fully support all kinds of wind power.

Power has many sources, but perhaps none energizes our lives and communities quite like the arts. At Dominion Energy, we applaud them all by providing our support. Whether it’s a rousing symphony, delicate ballet, engaging

theater performance, or inspiring museum or art opening, we’re proud to play our part. To learn more about how we’re putting our energy to work for the arts, visit DominionEnergy.com/ Foundation.
