Business | Chairman’s message

A Year of Stabilization and Progress

By Chris Bell, Chairman of the Board

I

t seems like just a few months ago that I became your Board Chairman and now I’m writing what will be my last Signals message. Patrick Devries, our current Chair Elect, will take the reins officially at the Annual Meeting on July 11. Pat has been a great member for many years and I know he’ll be an equally great Chairman for the Club. I’m confident that Pat will see even more progress this coming year on the Club’s commitment to a strong and sustainable future. One of the decisions I’m most proud of that we made as a Board was the hiring of our management company, KemperSports. The private club industry is one that is in transition, with the future of many clubs in question because of a world that is changing faster than many traditionally managed clubs can keep up with. As a Board, we had to find a new way for the Club to remain financially stable, socially relevant and provide programs and services that would keep people coming back for more. Hired initially as consultants, the KemperSports team has brought a 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Summer 2018

breadth of industry knowledge and business savvy that has not only allowed us to develop more dynamic programming but also helped us to dramatically cut costs. Our Interim General Manager, Marc Guiseppi, was a great introduction to the KemperSports teamwork approach which set the stage perfectly for our new General Manager, John O’Connor. John officially came onboard with the Club on October 25, 2017. He has proven himself to be a strong, smart, fully engaged leader with a knowledge and passion for not only athletics management, but also hotels, restaurants and food and beverage. Key accomplishments of John and his team this year include: • Overall savings of $700K of expenses (payroll and operating) • In- house hiring/ promotion of key positions • Overall staff morale increase • Stabilization • Re-gaining of member trust in their Club • 1910 opening • Sold-out in-house events (Valentines

Dinner, Family Bingo Nights, Crab Feed, Easter, Mother’s Day Brunches, Gonzaga Game Specials, Super Bowl Party, etc) • Creation and implementation of Kemper S.O.P’s including Interim Budget and Market Plan Roadmaps • Use of KemperSports National Vendor Partner Programs • Less reliance on one individual leader to run the Club, but a more inclusive and collaborative approach to help motivate and maximize efficiencies

Now seven months into the job, John is well aware of both the challenges and the opportunities the Club faces, as is KemperSports, whose primary responsibility to the Club is fiduciary responsibility. As your Board, we share that same responsibility. We Board members are sometimes asked, “What are you doing with the Capital Assessment funds?” The short answer is “It took a year for the fund to grow.” The longer answer is that we are reviewing the original Capital Needs Assessment Plan in the light of any critical needs that may have arisen during our first year of fund raising. Along with competitive bids on the projects, we’ll review both the value of the project to our members and the urgency of the project to the stability of our properties. In this process of planning and prioritizing, we are much like the homeowners of historic homes with numerous household issues to address and limited funds to address them. As a homeowner with such a house, you would likely not put all your money into a designer refrigerator when the roof of the house is starting to collapse. Like those homeowners, we have to weigh

the value of gaining something new with the risk of losing something critical. We take this responsibility to heart and it informs all of our decisions. Along with prioritizing projects and anticipating future needs, continuing to build cash reserves is an important component of this stewardship. Evidence of stabilization and growth are all around us. Current Club Memberships are up to 2,177 with the

total number of members including spouses/children now 5,210 for our total Club community. Our Athletics department has been achieving budget while helping members lead healthier lives, the Club Inn is seeing more robust occupancy and regularly selling out rooms for an increasing number of special sports and entertainment events in Downtown Spokane, and 1910, the Club restaurant, has hit the ground running

with increased customers for all hours of operation. These are all encouraging signs that point to a bright, sustainable future for our Club. For your personal member commitment to that cause and the community it nurtures, I and the entire Board offer our sincere thanks and appreciation of each and every one of you. It has been my honor to serve as your Board Chairman.

Club Members Welcome 1910! 1910 celebrates the present and the future with Northwest fresh plates, shared plates and rotating specials in a casually elegant, classically cool setting. The date also honors the Club’s past and the year that the historic, Kirtland Cutter clubhouse on Riverside was completed. Built from the ashes of the Great Fire of 1889, the historic Spokane Club outgrew two previous locations before finding its forever home on the corner of Riverside and Monroe. By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director

I

t was a beautiful 2018 evening that welcomed in the new day of 1910. Over 300 members gathered in the Georgian to enjoy complimentary menu items, sip signature cocktails, take restaurant tours and enjoy the new look and feel of their Club restaurant, 1910.

Attention Members:

City of Spokane Main Avenue Road Project Second Stage Starts July 5!

The City has awarded a contract to Halme Construction for the development of stormwater improvements (CSO Basin 25) which includes work in Peaceful Valley and in-street work along Main Avenue (from Cedar Street to Monroe Street). The work will begin at Cedar Street and move East towards Monroe. The Work along Main Avenue will be the Second Stage of the overall project and will begin approximately July 5th. A barricade will be placed at Monroe and Main which indicates “local access only” along Main Street West. Parking access (to the garage for members, and to the employee parking lot) and the Handicapped entrance will be maintained, with occasional exceptions (notice of which will be provided to Spokane Club Management). For more information you may check the city’s CSO 25 Webpage: https://my.spokanecity.org/projects/cso-basin-25-improvements-phase-1-and-2/

The Wisdom to Change:

Club’s Athletics Facility Celebrates 5Oth Anniversary

By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director

O

n December 12, 1966, Walter Toly, the President of the Spokane Club’s Board, sent a letter to all Club members announcing that the dream of an athletics facilities building had finally come to fruition. Contracts were let to Max Kuney Company for the general contract, with Warren Little & Lund for the mechanical and Power City Electric for electrical. “The award of the construction contracts culminates a 3-year study by your Board of Trustees,” wrote Toly. “During this time a great deal of research was conducted and other facilities have been visited. It was the decision of your Board that this action be taken, particularly when they analyzed the drop in our membership the past three years.” The 3-year drop was a total of 600 members who left in large part because 18 . they wanted facilities that the whole family could enjoy. That’s exactly what

the current, returning and new members got in 1968. On March 16, 1968 the Athletics facility held its first Open House on the Eve of Saint Patrick’s Day. Athletic exhibitions were held in all areas. There was also dancing in the Georgian Ballroom to the musical stylings of Jack Lyman’s Satin Brass, followed by a Midnight Breakfast. Tickets to the Midnight party were $5.50 per person. Reservations were limited to 300 and the event immediately sold out. With this brand new facility in place, and new member sales territory to explore, the Club’s Membership Committee proposed a membership drive. The Board approved the drive and set a limit of 1,250 Resident members. 50 years later, the Club still has many of those members who joined initially and primarily for Athletics. While some of them have traveled far from Spokane, all of them have great memories of having the times of their lives at the Club. One of them is Ross Wood. Ross and Ileana, his wife of 60 years, currently split their time between two

homes, one in Sun City West, Arizona, and one in Sun Valley, Idaho. Ross, at 84 and Ileana, at 83 are still very active skiers. The couple left Spokane in January of 2001 and return once or twice a year for short stays. Ross retired from Merrill Lynch in Spokane, after working for them for 35 years. “Ileana and I moved to Spokane from Seattle in 1965, after receiving an invitation from Merrill Lynch to go to work for them,” recalls Ross. “I was aware of the Spokane Club from the time we moved to Spokane in March of 1965, but didn’t have that much incentive to join. But in 1968, when the Athletics facility became a reality, I felt that the time had come to apply for membership.” “I had been working out at an athletic facility, across the street from Washington Trust Bank, run by Jack Peebler. Jack was hired by the Spokane Club to run the new athletic facility. Both Ileana and I wanted to be part of the Spokane Club, which was obviously shifting gears into a whole new Club. I worked out at the Club three or four days a week, as well as using other facilities of the Club.”

Like many of today’s members, one of Ross’s favorite places at the Club was the Barber Shop, which was run then, as it is now, by John Cocks. “John and I became good friends and after we moved away from Spokane, I tried to get back for a haircut every once in a while,” Ross recalls fondly. “We had two young boys, and to the best of my recollection, they did not use the Club, initially, but Ileana definitely did. My primary uses of the Athletic facility involved weight training, squash, and the indoor running track.” Like many members today, Ross made full use of both the Athletics and Social facilities of the Club and the business and personal contacts he acquired from that usage. “I frequently had lunch at the Club, with friends or business contacts. One of my favorite people in the Club dining room was Will Barron, the Maitre D’. Will was a quality guy, and we had many interesting talks about wine & food and working out. Will kept himself in superb shape. His wife, Rheo, was also a valued Club employee.” In 1972-73, Ross became the Spokane Club Board President. “This was a great honor which I humbly accepted,” recalls Ross. “In the year before my Presidency, the Board created a one-time opportunity to create 100 lifetime memberships for $2500. This meant that the member would no longer pay any dues. Dues at that time were, I think, $17 a month. We assumed these memberships would fly off the shelf. At the end of the one-year offering term, we had sold 37 memberships. I, of course, bought one, and today, I think there are only 5 or so still in existence. Because of that lifetime membership, I have enjoyed the privilege of remaining a Spokane Club member, even

though I moved away from Spokane 17 years ago.” “Looking back, from afar, at the Spokane Club today, there is no doubt in my mind that the decision to open an Athletic facility in 1968 was a stroke of genius by the Board in 1965. The Club survives today and has been a focal point for social and business activities in Spokane. The Athletic Facility was a magnet for younger club members who then became active members for all the Club activities. Without the Athletic Facility, I simply do not think the Club would have survived.” Like Ross, Alfred C. Preston (better known as Jerry) was an avid user of the new Athletics facilities from the very beginning. “I was definitely active and really enjoyed working out and the shower and steam afterwards,” Jerry recalls. “One of my favorite activities was running and I especially enjoyed the great track up above the gym and used it on a regular basis. I also had a group of friends with whom I’d go out running on a loop from the Club through the park and back. Sometimes we’d jog down through Peaceful Valley.”

Jerry Heston www.spokaneclub.org | Summer 2018 | 19

Tom, and his wife, Mary, moved back to Spokane and joined the Club and they really love being a part of it. And their kids, my grandchildren, look forward to being at the Club when they are home on summer break.” Jerry and his family use many of the social aspects of the Club now, including Sunday breakfast and especially the holiday brunches in the Georgian Jerry , Alex and Tom never miss a Tom & Jerry Room. 3 generations of Heston men enjoying the Club “I really get a kick out of “In fact, I did one of the Club’s first attending the Tom and Jerry parties, since mini-marathons. I also took yoga classes, my name is Jerry and I go with my son nutrition classes and enjoyed playing Tom! I certainly have enjoyed the Club squash in the new courts. Today, Jerry still enjoys the Club, but “In the mid ‘60s, I began my career his interests have shifted somewhat over as a lawyer with Winston and Cashatt,” the years. says Bob. “At the time, there wasn’t “At 88 years old, I’m not as active as I much available in Spokane for athletics. used to be. for downtown businessmen called The Executive Club. When the Spokane Club announced that it was opening an athletics facility and that Jack would be running it, I became very interested in joining the Club. Shortly after the Athletics facility opened I became a member and I’ve been a member ever since.” Racquetball was one of Bob’s greatest passions and he often came over from his office to play with fellow members of his law firm on their lunch break. “Racquetball was my major use of the Club for many years. In later years it’s been weight lifting and rowing. Back when the Club was keeping rowing records I rowed 10 million meters. It took me awhile, but I did it!” Committed to both an active lifestyle and engaging community pursuits, Bob uses all the services the Club has to offer. He has served as legal counsel for Mukagowa and currently serves on their Board. “We’ve held several big meetings at the Club and it was really convenient to come down from the South Hill for lunch meetings. The hotel rooms are also a real asset and the Crystal Room is a great meeting location.” Now an Honorary member, Bob is still an active user of the Club and sees it as a vital asset to his life. “I really enjoy the Club and try to get down two times a week. It’s great to see people I’ve known for so long, and people I’ve just met, and have a good chat.” Thanks to these great members, and thousands like them, the Spokane Club endures as both a living legend and a local hero. Cheers to the Club’s relationship with KemperSports as we build both more robust athletic and social offerings. Cheers to the next 50 years!

Christine Cresswell has been guiding yoga for the last 6 years. She fell in love with the practice over 15 years ago because of the creative and fluid movement and how grounding and healing the practice felt. She studied the art of yoga in Thailand for three months. She has over one thousand hours in training including her RYT 200 and 500. Spokane Club 2018 USTA Teams moving on!

W4.0 55: W8.0 55+ Champs Andi Hart, Mona Ryan, Merilee Dinneen, JoAnn Berg, Cheryl Traum, Kari Bowton,Lisa Greer, Lori Nicol

This spring season showcased a flurry of USTA activity at the Club culminating in several Spokane Club teams moving on to PNW sectional play in August. The Club hosted the 18 and Over USTA regular season leagues and regional play-offs, the Over-55 USTA regional play-offs, and the Over-40 USTA league. Although we normally have league competitions here, hosting the regional play-offs only happens every other year. We are extremely conscience of the burden this programing places on our member’s use of the tennis courts therefore, we make every attempt to keep some court time available to our non-USTA members. On the flip side, these events maximize our court times and bring in extra revenue and bring positive exposure to the club. Congrats and good luck to the following Spokane Club teams which having run the regional competition gauntlet and are now moving on to the USTA Sectionals at either Sun River or Portland, Or in August: Over-55: W6.0 Shirlee Steiner Team, W8.0 Kari Bowton Team, M7.0 Bruce Johnson Team 18 and Over: M5.0+ Kirk Vradenburg Team, M4.0 Scott Anderson Team Over-40: (to be determined by Sunday!)

Kevin O’Neil, a beloved member of the Spokane Club community, passed away on April 5, 2018. Fittingly, his obituary noted that Heaven must have needed a storyteller. Pictured with Kevin’s mom, Tess, the M3.7 players paid tribute with everyone wearing the Kevin O. nametag during competition. As the luck of the Irish would have it, Bruce’s team is moving on with a wildcard bid. That’s how you make a storyteller smile! www.spokaneclub.org | Summer 2018 | 33

New Head Coach Chris Chris has 17 years of coaching and teaching experience. He has been involved in aquatics at a professional level since he was 15 years old. He has taught individuals of all ages and all skill levels ranging from beginners to competitive athletes. He has enjoyed watching the current swim team members grow and improve for the last two years and is excited to jump in and keep their eyes focused on their individual goals. His coaching philosophy can be defined as this: teach the athletes life lessons about hard work, dedication, dealing honorably with both success and failure because everyone will experience both at some point. Success is always going to be different for each individual. The common thread in TEAM effort is doing it together, supporting each other and giving your best to create a positive work environment. The key to success is finishing things through and the completion of goals you have set and then learning to understand, appreciate and eventually love the process so you can apply these principles into everything you do in life.

Community Engagement: Bloomsday Recap Every year Spokane showcases its splendor with the Bloomsday 12K road race in May and then again with Hoopfest in June/July. It is the Spokane Club’s privilege to take part in both of these wonderful community events. This year, the Spokane Club mixed things up a little by having a booth at the Bloomsday Trade Show. Our staff had a blast engaging with all of the runners and sharing about the Club; there was prize wheel spinning, plank challenges, and saying hi to both new and familiar faces. The winner of our Grand Prize raffle duffle bag, full of running goodies, was Club Member Jackie Allen! Throughout the trade show, our staff had fun challenging passersby to our plank challenge. The winners won a trial month at the Club. Our runner up each day was local athlete, Jackson Lino with times of 6:10 and 10:07! Friday’s Champion was Ronin Blair with a time of 6:13! Saturday’s Grand Champion was 5th grader Andrew Rohlfing with a time of 10:30!!! In addition to participating at the trade show and having several employees run in the race, the Spokane Club loved being along the race route to cheer on all of the Bloomsday runners!
