RECIPROCAL CLUBS SPOTLIGHT FROM MEN'S

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Greetings to fellow Spokane Club Members,

When I wrote my last update on board activities, it was cold and snowing outside my window, but today the sun is shining, spring has come and gone, and summer is around the corner. With the arrival of summer and sunshine, we know that the patio is the place to go to enjoy fun in the sun, along with great food and beverages! Let me know, and I will save you a seat. As I am coming up towards the end of my time as your Chair of the Board of Trustees, I can’t believe a year has almost passed.

I want to take the time to thank the Board of Trustees for volunteering their time to assist in ensuring the

Spokane Club legacy continues. Their dedication and willingness to serve should not go unnoticed.

The Board continues to focus on ensuring that the club maintains financial stability, a continuation of executing capital improvement projects, assisting in the governance of the Spokane Club, and ensuring that all members receive great member experiences for themselves and their guests.

With the end of the fiscal year almost here, I want to invite you, the members, to the General Membership Meeting, June 20th, at 5:00 p.m. At this meeting we will conduct some formal board business as well as recap the past 12 months, along with looking forward into the future. I look forward to seeing you.

Please take time to visit your club. The club continues to offer a great variety of activities for the upcoming summer and don’t forget to enjoy the great dining experience at the club.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Thank you, Jack

MEET THE MARCH AND APRIL EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH!

Fatima, Housekeeping Supervisor, has consistently demonstrated exceptional performance and dedication to her role, and her contributions have not gone unnoticed. Her hard work and positive attitude have set a wonderful example for her colleagues, and we are proud to have her as a member of our team. The employee of the month committee looked at the many ways Fatima regularly gives to the club, but not only the club. As many of you may be aware, one of Fatima’s team member’s family recently suffered a loss due to fire. Fatima aided and helped to raise over 2 thousand dollars for the affected family members. This truly embodies the club's value of being Community Minded. One of the goals of the Spokane Club is to support and celebrate the economic and social health and well-being of our club community and the community in which we live and work.

Featured Trainer

Fitness can be an intimidating field, but Monica, Personal Trainer, helps make exercise approachable for everyone. During personal training sessions, she provides her clients with individualized guidance to help them reach their goals. She helps make fitness fun by leading upbeat group fitness classes, with modifications offered to allow members of various levels of athleticism to participate. The conditioning room stays in top condition thanks to the consistent attention to detail that she shows while maintaining the equipment. On top of all these responsibilities, Monica took the initiative to organize and lead the Hiking Club, which is officially underway with the warmer weather finally here! All these qualities have helped create a warm, welcoming, and unintimidating environment for members to work towards their fitness goals. Monica is an invaluable member of the Spokane Club and it is our privilege to offer her this award.

MESSAGE FROM THE GM

Dear Membership,

I am writing to express and share my sincere gratitude and appreciation to every member of our team for their hard work and dedication in achieving six months of positive membership growth. This is a significant milestone that we have not seen since 2004. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Rose Peters, who executed a very successful Open House resulting in 12 new membership sign-ups in a single day. We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to showcase our club to new members and guests, and we are grateful for your help in spreading the word. We want to extend a special thank you to those who referred friends, family, and colleagues to attend the Open House.

As we enter the summer months, we know a lot of you start spending weekends at the lakes and many others go on vacations. This year, instead of slowing the member programming down in the summer, we are going to continue with a robust schedule of events, focusing on weekday activities. The Kids Summer Camp at the Spokane Club is the best and the greatest in the area, led by our superstar Tracey. For those of you who are traveling, do make sure to check to see if there is a reciprocal club in the location because staying at another club is 10 times better than checking into the same old Marriott. You might find yourself on a splendid private beach in Hawaii thanks to your membership at the Spokane Club. This summer, we are keeping busy with some very important upkeep work. We are finally getting some repair work started on the façade of the historical building on June 22, once all the big catering events are done for the season. There is also a lot of work in the back of the house which needs to be finished, namely the boilers, AC units, and employee areas, which we have put on the back burner for a while but that is no longer an option. Our facilities manager, John Voelker, has already saved the Club thousands of dollars by finding creative ways to keep our heating and cooling going without replacing the whole system. We thank him for that. We are also looking to replace some essential member supplies in the athletics area which are in high demand like aquatic dumbbells, belts, workout mats, etc. For those who regularly like to use the

MESSAGE FROM THE GM

Somadome Meditation Pod, which was available to demo, our time with the dome is coming to an end but we might have found a way to keep it at the Club longer through a collaboration with a local business. Stay tuned for more information on that in the coming weeks.

A shout-out to our traveling basketball team for winning both the regional and national tournaments this year. Josh, our Athletic Director, has done a great job running all our athletic programs and we hope to continue growing participation in our athletic events and leagues. Pickleball Leagues are Tuesdays and Thursdays and Basketball is Wednesdays. The Running Club meets on Mondays at 5:30 pm and all member runners are invited no matter what your level is. If running is not your thing, maybe you would like to try out the Classic Cards Club, Hiking Club, or the Cellar Dwellers, our wine club. There is something for everybody.

Finally, I would like to once again express my personal commitment to the Spokane Club, its members, and its staff. My whole family, me, my wife Morgan, and our 2 babies Aadira and Ari are invested and committed to seeing the Spokane Club succeed and thrive for the next 100 years. There is a lot to be done but happy members and engaged staff are what my ultimate goal is and my family stands by my side for it. As always, if you have questions, ideas, or suggestions please call me, email me, or text me directly. There is no better use of my time than talking openly and transparently with Spokane Club members.

Thank you for your continued support of the Spokane Club, and we look forward to providing you with exceptional experiences in the months ahead.

Yours sincerely,

AN UNFORGETTABLE DINING EXPERIENCE AT THE CLUB

Dear Members,

Member events have been great with Mother’s Day Brunch and Easter Brunch having the biggest member turnouts in several years. With over 400 for Easter Brunch and just under 400 for Mother’s Day Brunch, it has been exciting to do what we love and to create memories on these special days.

1910 Restaurant and Lounge continues to stay busy since the March relaunch. The Sunday Bubbly Brunch Buffet and rotating Fresh Menu have both been very popular among members and guests. Our Chilean Sea Bass continues to be our biggest seller and most talked about dish on the menu. We look forward to creating more memories and special dishes with great service for you as we continue to do what we love every day.

MESSAGE FROM ACCOUNTING

Hello from Accounting! Larry, Dorothy, & Christy are happy to help you with all your Spokane Club accounting needs. Questions on your statement, help making a payment, setting up auto-pay…we are here to help. Our email address is accounting@spokaneclub.org, or call the Club and ask for accounting at (509) 838-8511.

24/7 Fitness Access

Dorothy asks that if you pay by check, please write your membership number on the check so we can be sure to credit your account and not another. Christy wants to remind you that we have a drop-off box for payments in the Sports Shop athletic corner. You can also give any checks (or cash) to the front desk to get to accounting. We are normally here at the club to help you Monday-Friday from 9 am – 5 pm (except for holidays). We all have voicemails and emails where you can leave us a message and we will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.

There is a new parking rate structure that took effect on May 1st. Your first 3 hours are still FREE!! After that, for daily total stays between 3-6 hours, your club account will be charged $6; stays from 6-9 hours will be charged $10; and stays for 9 hours or more will be charged an all-day rate of $14. If you experience any problems, please call or email the Club and let us know.

A reminder that if your statement balance is not paid by the end of the month, you will be charged a “Late Fee” of 1.5 % of the balance due; this is per the Club's Bylaws. We ask that you pay your membership balance by the 20th of each month.

Thank you,

In late 2022, Rose Peters, our wonderful Member Services Director, was diagnosed with cancer, and her world turned upside down. As she bravely battles this disease, we want to come together to support her in any way we can. Rose has been an inspiration to so many in the running community, sharing her love for the sport and her passion for all things Disney on her popular YouTube channel. Her positive energy and uplifting spirit have touched the lives of countless people, and now it's time for us to give back.

We are asking for your help to raise funds to support Rose's cancer treatment. Medical bills can be overwhelming, and we want to make sure Rose can focus on her health without the added stress of financial burden. Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference and be greatly appreciated. Please consider donating to support her in this challenging time. Let's fight this battle together! Click here or visit gofund.me/942b1b31 to donate.

Chef Eric Marple Redefines Dining at the Club

The new 1910 Restaurant and Lounge, nestled within the Spokane Club, is set to dazzle members with a remarkable dining experience curated by Executive Chef Eric Marple. With an impressive culinary background and a passion for exquisite flavors, Chef Eric has crafted a menu that combines global techniques, international influences, and the finest locally sourced ingredients.

Chef Eric's culinary journey began at the Tri-Tech Skills Center during his high school years, where his talent for the culinary arts first flourished. After honing his skills in various corporate restaurants and completing his culinary education in Portland, he embarked on a path of continuous growth and learning. Throughout

his career, he worked alongside esteemed chefs, absorbing their knowledge and refining his own techniques. At the age of 25, Chef Eric earned his first Chef title, winning a local competition in the Tri-Cities. He spent the following two years immersing himself in the world of culinary craftsmanship, expanding his repertoire, and nurturing his culinary passion. In 2006, he ventured into entrepreneurship, opening his own family restaurant, before eventually making his mark in Spokane and joining the culinary team at the Spokane Club.

With eight years of experience at the 1910 Restaurant and Lounge, Chef Eric has risen through the ranks from a dedicated line cook to his current position as the Spokane Club's Executive Chef. Speaking about his passion for serving members, Chef Eric emphasizes the personal connection he shares. "I like being a personal chef for the members. You see a member you cook for every day, and you know exactly what they're going to get before they even order. I say it all the time, but knowing exactly how much salt they want on their eggs or how many berries they want in their fruit cup means a lot. A lot of people are creatures of habit, and I am too, and so getting that personal touch and being on that first-name basis, you just don't get that in a public restaurant."

Whether it's hosting a business meeting, unwinding with friends over drinks, or bringing the family by for dinner, the 1910 Restaurant and Lounge continues its legacy of excellence under the guidance of Chef Eric Marple.

MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Dear Members,

We are pleased to announce the addition of nutrition services at The Spokane Club. We are excited to welcome Anne Mansfield as our new Nutritionist on our Athletics Team. Anne brings extensive knowledge and expertise, currently pursuing a master's degree in Dietetics at Washington State University and working towards her Registered Dietitian credential. In the coming months, Anne will offer private nutrition consultations, providing personalized guidance and support to our members. We invite you to read her bio in this e-Signals issue to learn more about her background and qualifications. This valuable addition to our services will assist our members in achieving their health and wellness goals through expert nutrition guidance.

We take great pride in the accomplishments of our Spokane Club travel basketball team. In March, they competed in the PCAC regional championships held in San Francisco. Despite tough competition, the Spokane Club emerged victorious and secured the tournament win. Just a month later, they participated in the NACAD National Championships in Los Angeles. Demonstrating their prowess, the team finished the tournament undefeated with a record of 6-0 and were crowned champions of the ‘A’ Division. We extend our sincere congratulations to these gentlemen for their outstanding achievements this season.

Furthermore, our second Pickleball league is nearing completion, and we have exciting plans for the future. The league has experienced exceptional attendance, and the pickleball community is flourishing. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming leagues and tournaments as we continue to foster this thriving community. My door is always open if you have any suggestions on how we can improve your experience here at the club.

We are thrilled to announce significant upgrades to our pool patio, including the installation of a new

outdoor kitchen. To celebrate these improvements, we will be hosting a launch party in June, and we encourage you to watch for further details. In order to fully utilize the enhanced space, we will extend the pool and patio hours until 9 pm daily during the summer season. However, we kindly remind all members that children under 16 years of age may only use the pool during designated family swim hours and must be supervised by a lifeguard at all times. These measures are in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all individuals utilizing the facility.

We would like to remind all our valued members about the 24/7 access to our athletic facility. It is important to note that during after-hours, only members are allowed to utilize the facility. We kindly request all members to scan their member card at the Sport Shop whenever accessing the facility outside of regular operating hours. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as it enables us to maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone.

Meet Anne, Nutritionist at the Club!

"I faced some unique health challenges during my childhood that gently nudged me towards exercise and healthy eating. I began running and being intentional with my diet to help manage and improve my health and felt immediate benefits. It felt like a miracle to see such stark improvements with simple dietary changes and as little as 30 minutes of exercise a day.

I’ve found a lot of joy in trying new things and seeing what my body is capable of! I feel so lucky to be able to share this joybased approach with my clients and help them find the confidence, happiness, and health that it brings."

AQUATICS UPDATE

Summer of 2023 is upon us, and with it comes several updates from Spokane Club Aquatics!

The last of our Spokane Club Penguins’ swim meets are taking place on June 1st and June 29th before joining the city’s outdoor meets at Witter Pool. Come check it out and get dinner from our brand-new outdoor kitchen while you’re at it!

Along with that, we are bringing in new equipment starting with noodles, dumbbells, and belts for our Aqua fitness classes, so join our amazing instructors at 7:15 am or 8:15 am on Mondays and Wednesdays, or our 7:15 am class on Fridays to put them to good use. We are also purchasing allnew kickboards and flippers for Masters Swimming, our Penguins Swim Team, and any lap swimmers who wish to use them. However, of all our new additions to equipment, the most exciting by far will be a new water polo net, along with balls and headgear! Starting end of June, on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm, we will be introducing pickup water polo for all ages. You’ll see a fast-paced, half-court setup if you stop by, so add your name to the sign-up sheet in the Sport Shop to get further information.

As for our Penguin Swim School, due to high demand, we are adding more Parent/Tot classes starting at 5 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you’re unable to make these, check out the classes we have for various ages and skill levels Mondays and Wednesdays after school, or on Saturday mornings.

Lastly, we are extending family swim hours throughout the summer from 10 am-7 pm on weekdays and 9 am-3 pm on weekends. As always, you can find more information under the pool tab of Members.SpokaneClub.org or by emailing our Aquatics Coordinator at TCooper@SpokaneClub.org

Embracing the Past, Serving the Present: Dr. Dennis Murphy's Incredible Story

The Spokane Club is home to many remarkable individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving their community. Among them is Dr. Dennis Murphy, a man whose journey has taken him from hardware stores to executive positions, and eventually to the noble profession of funeral directing. With a career spanning decades, Dr. Murphy's commitment to helping others during their most challenging times has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless families.

Although Dr. Murphy didn't start his professional journey as a funeral director, his passion for this vocation began at a young age. Recalling his early aspirations, he remembers his mother telling him he didn't have enough gray hair to be a funeral director. Undeterred, he embarked on various career paths, working in a hardware store and later finding success as the General Manager and Vice President at the Toro company. He even ventured into the world of accounting for an air compressor business. At the age of 47, Dr. Murphy finally pursued his long-held dream of becoming a funeral director. Reflecting on his decision, he remarked, "You either can do it or you can't. I'll never forget my first adventure into embalming. I said, 'Well, this is it! You either do this or you can't.' And I did it." This unwavering determination and the genuine desire to assist people during their darkest moments

have been the driving forces behind his success in the field. When asked about the most fulfilling aspect of his work, Dr. Murphy expressed, "I enjoy the fact that you help people on the worst day of their life. It's so important to have someone who cares to guide them through what to do." Funeral directors play an integral role in supporting grieving families, ensuring that all necessary arrangements are made with empathy and professionalism. Dr. Murphy's commitment to offering guidance and care has left a lasting impact on those he has served.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Dr. Murphy retired briefly for only four days before joining Hennessy Funeral Homes, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his craft. Throughout his life, he has been known for his tireless work ethic, always seeking new opportunities to contribute to his community. From his involvement

in the Spokane Junior Chamber of Commerce as a young executive to his leadership role as the past chairman for the Washington State Funeral Directors Association, Dr. Murphy understands the significance of networking and building trust in the funeral industry. In his role, Dr. Murphy has witnessed firsthand the challenges families face when a loved one passes away unexpectedly. Many individuals find themselves unprepared and overwhelmed by funeral preparations and legal and administrative tasks. Recognizing the importance of planning ahead, Dr. Murphy emphasizes the necessity of documenting one's preferences for their death. By doing so, individuals can alleviate the burden on their families, ensuring that their final wishes are fulfilled.

Despite the somber nature of his profession, Dr. Murphy has encountered moments that hint at the mystical and supernatural. As a former Verger at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, he experienced a peculiar encounter when he felt a mysterious "whoosh" one night, attributing it to the spirit of Harold C. Whitehouse, the church's architect. Dr. Murphy recalls even witnessing a portrait inexplicably glowing. His best story, however, came from a dream he had a couple of months after his mother's passing. In the dream, she reassured him that she was happy and advised him to listen to her beloved "do-wacka-do" music from the 1920s. Since that dream, Dr. Murphy has found solace, no longer burdened by worry about his mother's well-being.

Dr. Murphy's roots run deep in Spokane, with his family's history stretching back to 1883. He takes pride in his ancestral ties to the region and fondly recalls stories shared by his great-grandmother in her diary, who wrote about the ashy dirt on the little island they lived on near Gonzaga before it was submerged by the backed-up Spokane River. His great-grandfather, Thomas Jack, owned a factory until a co-founder absconded with the funds, leading him to pursue farming and pass on the land to Dr. Murphy's grandfather, who raised eight children there. This rich family history instilled in Dr. Murphy a deep appreciation for the past, leading him to pursue his love for history and antique cars. An avid collector of antique automobiles, Dr. Murphy possesses an impressive array of classic cars, including a 1939 Packard Super Eight Hearse. He has always been a "car guy," with his first vehicle being a 1953 Pontiac Straight-8 Sedan that he acquired for a mere $14. His passion for restoring these treasures reflects his innate connection to the past. In addition to his automotive pursuits, he has lovingly restored his own historic home to its original 1910 grandeur.

For nearly half a century, the Spokane Club has played an integral role in Dr. Murphy's life. Joined through the sponsorship of the Toro distributorship owners, who were pleased with their own membership, the Club has become a cherished place for him. What keeps him coming back, he says, are the friends he has made over the years. Saturday morning breakfasts with his close companion of almost 50 years have become a beloved tradition. Memories of dinner parties in the Cutter Dining Room and delightful escapades, such as Rev. Richard Coombs light-heartedly crashing a wedding in the Georgian Ballroom. He also fondly reminisces about the renowned Maître d', Will Barron, who added a touch of opulence to the Spokane Club with exquisite silverware and fine china.

Dr. Dennis Murphy's remarkable journey as a funeral director and his unwavering commitment to helping others during their most challenging moments truly define his character. Through his compassion, guidance, and devotion, he has provided solace to countless families, ensuring that their loved ones are honored and remembered. As a devoted member of the Spokane Club, he continues to inspire others with his appreciation for history and his commitment to preserving the past. Dr. Murphy's story serves as a testament to the profound impact one person can have when they dedicate their life to serving others

FROM MEN'S CLUB TO COMMUNITY HUB

EXCERPT FROM LIVING HISTORY WITH A LIVING LEGEND

The evolution from a gentlemen’s club to a multi-faceted gathering spot for families, foodies, and fitness fans didn’t occur easily or overnight. But the seed of one of those changes was clearly planted in the 120 pages of Cutter’s original blueprints and the finished building. Prior to the Riverside and Monroe location, women were only allowed in the club once a year for a special occasion. In the design of the new building, Cutter envisioned the front of the clubhouse with two entrances on Riverside, one to welcome men and the other to welcome women.

The primary entrance, still in use today, had an air of stately distinction and elegance. This was the men’s entrance and generations of townsmen, visiting dignitaries and performers have climbed the entry stairs.

From Mark Twain to George Plimpton, Teddy Roosevelt to George H. Bush, Harry Truman to Bill Clinton, and Bing Crosby to Lorne Greene, the club has hosted lectures, fundraisers, meetings, and parties for an incredibly diverse group of people. Many of them have stayed at the club’s hotel, which has been part of the club’s services since 1910 and remains today one of the best locations in town for full-service accommodations.

The secondary entrance, still intact and occasionally used today for special events, was much smaller and very discreet. This street-level entry was designated as the women’s entrance. Wives and daughters were welcome to step down the stairs into their own elegant reception and dining rooms. They were not, however, granted access to the rest of the club except when accompanying their husbands or fathers for a special event, nor were they considered members in their own right. These regulations, like many at the club, would change dramatically over the decades, mirroring the social and cultural changes of a growing city.
