COMES TO THE CLUB
FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Greetings to fellow Spokane Club Members,
I planned on opening with, “Spring is in the Air”, but as I type this, the recent snow fall exceeded 4 inches outside my window! And that was during the first week of March. But I do know that Spring will eventually arrive, warmer weather is ahead, and eventually, the real sign that Spring has arrived, will be when the outdoor patio opens.
As your current Board Chair, it has been my honor this year to work alongside the other board members to help in the sustainability and long-term legacy of the Spokane Club.
The Board has been focused on ensuring that the club maintains financial stability, continuation of
executing capital improvement projects, assisting in the governance of the Spokane Club, and to ensure that all members receive great member experiences for themselves and their guests.
In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board members that graciously give their time because of their interest in the Spokane Club:
Bruce Hunt – Vice Chair and Incoming Chair
Mark Ostersmith – Treasurer
Lesley Record – Secretary
Ross Blevins – Past Chair
Jack G. Lucas, Board Chair
Board Members: Eldonna Shaw-Davis, Jim Murphy, Randy Berg, Shae Blackwell, Collins Sprague, Meg Lindsay, Deb Brock, and Laura Goetsch
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our General Manager, Molly Sandhu, and the entire Spokane Club Staff, for their hard work and dedication in ensuring that the club continues to have high-quality activities for all age groups, a great fitness center, a new food and beverage program that is experiencing a great deal of success, and for providing great member experiences for all of us.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The Annual Members Meeting will be on June 20th this year. At this meeting, we will welcome the new incoming officers, review the recent yearly FY financials, provide an update on capital projects, and look forward to the new fiscal year.
The entire Board of Trustee’s appreciates your support.

MEET SARA THAYER, MARCH EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!
Sara exemplifies our true service program. She goes above and beyond to keep our members and their children happy. She greets all the kids and members by name and with a smile. She comes to work every day with a positive attitude and outlook on the day. She will snuggle kids, play games, change the worst diapers you could ever imagine and still maintain her happy smile. She’ll walk kids out with the parents in order to help them get the kids safely in their car. Parents tell me all the time how much their kids love Sara and that they talk about her at home. She has created a strong fan base of loyal customers, some of whom will only bring their kids to childcare when she is present.
Sara is also a team player. She stepped up to the plate while I was out on leave and took over the management of the childcare department. There were some difficult moments during that time, but Sara kept everything running perfectly and never complained. I am so grateful
to have an employee like Sara. She is a rarity with her incredible work ethic and constant happy disposition. The childcare department would be lost without her!

Dear Membership,
Spring brings new growth, new beginnings, and a sense of renewal. It’s a time of year that reminds us of the importance of fresh starts and positive change and 1200 is the number on our minds. I am thrilled to announce that our membership has been steadily growing over the past few months and we crossed 1200 memberships earlier this month. 1200 memberships translate to about 4000 members. We are happy to welcome new members to our club and look forward to meeting them at the next member orientation. We appreciate the support of our current members in helping us spread the word about our amazing Club.
I am also proud to say that Signals magazine is back with a little rebranding, staying true to the current times. Our plan is to publish eSignals bimonthly, and it would be available in both digital and print versions. We will do some test prints for the next edition and do a full rollout on the following publication. Members will have the option to subscribe to a print copy.
We are also going to reopen the back patio near the pool after some renovation work- it will now have a cleaner and greener look complete with an outdoor kitchen and bar open for special events. Later in the year, we are also expecting the city to start work on extending the centennial trail which will go under the Monroe bridge and the Spokane Club will get their own private access gate to get on the trail from the patio. The Spokane Club Running Club is going to be a terrific activity to be part of once the trail is ready. We are upgrading our equipment and making improvements to our spaces to ensure that our members have the best possible experience with us. We hope that you will enjoy these new enhancements and we welcome your feedback.
I am pleased to announce that we have also implemented an Employee of the Month program. This program aims to recognize the outstanding work and dedication of our staff members, who are

MESSAGE FROM ACCOUNTING
Hello from Accounting! Larry, Dorothy, & Christy are happy to help you with all your Spokane Club accounting needs. Questions on your statement, help making a payment, setting up auto-pay…bring it on. Our email address is accounting@spokaneclub.org, or call the Club and ask for accounting 509-838-8511.
Fitness Access
So who are we? Larry Ross is our Accounting Manager and has been with the Spokane Club for 2 years. He is responsible for all accounting activities and financials but does this with the help of his staff accountants. Dorothy Haskell has been with the Club for 2 ½ years and mainly works with Accounts Payable & Payroll. Dorothy also started the “Classic Card Playing Club" here at the Club, which meets on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Thursday of each month. Then there is Christy Lipe, who is not only an accountant but also the Club's in-house baker of yummy goodies that can be found in the Deli. Christy has been with the Club for almost a year now, and her main focus is “Membership Accounting”. She is the one who answers your calls and emails, or at the very least directs them to someone who can.
Starting in March, we have begun charging for parking again now that the gates are working. Please only 1 car can go through at a time, otherwise, the gate comes down on the 2nd car and break the gate. We have new security cameras being installed to help us identify problems. As a Member Perk, each member gets 3 hours of free parking per day in either garage. After that, it is currently $2 per hour with a max of $12 per day. If you do not swipe your membership card in and out (or use the same card for both) you will be charged for a full day. We will try to contact you via email if an error like this is noticed. If you experience any problems, please call or email the Club and let us know.
As stated in the past two months’ statements, starting with the monthly billing on March 30th, late charge fees will begin again. If we do not receive your payment by the end of the month, you will be charged a “Late Fee” of 1.5 % of the balance due. We ask that you pay your membership balance by the 20th of each month.

1910 RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE RELAUNCH
The past 3 1/2 months have been a whirlwind of changes and upgrades to your restaurant 1910. My staff and I have put our heart and soul into everything that you see today and there’s even more to come! The beautiful booth in the 1910 Lounge has been installed and will create much more seating for you to enjoy yourself at any time here at the restaurant. I’m also working on an accent wall in the lounge, searching the Club for amazing vintage pictures and prints to create an elegant space. I know that I speak for my entire staff when I say we truly could not have done this without you and it has been my pleasure to get to know so many of you. You’ve helped me understand the history of the Club and have offered such amazing feedback and suggestions when it comes to the upgrades. As we continue to move forward, striving every day to serve you, your families, and your guests, please continue to communicate your ideas with us here at 1910 Restaurant and Lounge because at the end of the day, this is your Club and we are here to serve you!
From me and my staff, thank you so much!

Dear Members,
Spring is here, and I am excited for warmer weather and all the wonderful events we have coming up at the club. I recently attended the father/daughter dance at the club with my daughter, Annaliese, and it was a blast! I loved seeing all of the adorable dresses and getting out on the dance floor. Tracey from Childcare and Jackie from Catering put together an amazing event-good food, good company and a lot of fun.
Our adult basketball team recently traveled to the Olympic Club in San Francisco to participate in a regional tournament with other private clubs. We went 3-1 and won the tournament! Congratulations gentlemen, way to represent The Spokane Club. The next tournament is Nationals in LA at the end of April. Good luck at the tournament, guys. Our next adult basketball league will start on Wednesday, May 3rd. If you are interested in joining, please reach out to me or Josh Brandon at jbrandon@spokaneclub.org. We’d love to have you out. Our goal for the basketball tournaments in 2024 is to send multiple teams, male and female, as well as multiple divisions to represent the club. Joining the basketball league is the best way to start.
We have a lot of family and youth events coming up at the club in the next couple of months. Reserve your spot now on the calendar tab on our website at members.spokaneclub.org. In April we have the Easter Egg Hunt and Petting Zoo on April 1st, Parent Night Out on April 7th, Family BINGO on April 28th, and my personal favorite, the Easter Brunch on April 9th. Rumor has it, the Easter Bunny is going to make an appearance at the brunch so mark your calendars. In May we have Parent Night Out on May 5th and the Plunge Party on May 19th.
My door is always open if you have any suggestions on how we can improve your experience here at the club.
Regards,
Chris Barry Athletic Director

Meet Monica, personal trainer at the Club!
"In my early years of fitness, I was a runner. I got introduced to strength training as I got older and eventually started training for my first powerlifting competition when I was diagnosed with cancer. Going through cancer treatment didn't allow my body to function how I was used to. I had to adapt to not being able to walk most days from being in the best shape of my life. I completed my treatment and got immediately back into the gym, with the goal of finding strength and owning my body once again. The gym supported my recovery not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. There are endless avenues you can find growth in the gym and your muscles are just one."

AQUATICS UPDATE
Aquatics has never been busier, not only for open lap and family swimmers but for everyone joining our multitude of programs!
Our Masters swimmers are attending their first meet this year on April 8th! Be sure to wish Coach Rob and our other swimmers luck if you see them, and reserve a spot any day from Mon-Fri at 5:30 am on members.spokaneclub.org if you’re interested in joining practice.
Our Spokane Club swim team also has several meets coming up. On April 27th and June 1st, you can see our swimmers compete against 5 other local teams, including Airway Heights, Fairchild AFB, neighboring YMCAs, and Liberty Lake. Email either me (Tcooper@spokaneclub.org) or Coach Chris (Cbarry@spokaneclub.org) if your child is looking to attend.
Group swim lessons are starting to fill up for upcoming months, so make sure to reserve a spot on the member portal if you’re interested. Alternatively, take a look at our instructors and their bios in the “private lessons” tab to sign up for some individual attention from the instructor that is right for you or your child.
Along with our competitive events, we are hosting another Plunge Party on May 19th! Stop by and enjoy pizza and a movie, and take a dip in the pool while you’re at it! Our featured film this month will be Finding Nemo, so RSVP to me or Tracey (tkauffman@spokaneclub.org), and we can save you a slice.
Lastly, we are starting open water polo in May! Starting at 6:30 pm on Wednesdays, you can join casual pickup games to compete for the club title! Look for our sign-up sheet in the sports shop to join.
As always, you can reach me by email, or on my cell at (509)723-3368 if you have any questions about any of our programs/activities, or how to register for them.
I hope to see you soon!

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE BY CHRISTOPHER GREENE
We are very excited to say that membership at the Spokane Club has been growing over the past couple months. We have had four positive membership months in a row, with a net positive nine memberships so far in mid-March. For the first time since June 2022, we have crossed the 1,200 membership threshold. On April 18th, we will be hosting a New Member Orientation in the 1910 Lounge for all new members that have joined since December 2022. The New Member Orientations are a great opportunity for those new to the Spokane Club to mix and mingle and experience firsthand the world class hospitality of the Spokane Club. Additionally, we will be hosting an Open House on May 6th from 10am-2pm, the same weekend as Spokane's favorite local holidayBloomsday. There will be tours, group fitness classes, food & beverages, prizes and so much more, including a free initiation fee for those wanting to join during the Open House. For each guest that a member brings, the member will be entered into a drawing for prizes, with the grand prize being six months of free membership dues. We are definitely looking forward to Spring and all the events ahead at the Spokane Club!
1910 LOUNGE NEW COCKTAILS
The Aviation and the 1910 Old Fashioned are two classics that are perfect to have perfect any time of year.
The Aviation is a refreshing cocktail that highlights gin, maraschino liqueur, and crème de violette. It's a little sweeter than some cocktails, but it's worth it.
Or try the 1910 Old Fashioned, which celebrates its public club origin by perfecting an old standard.

Jeanne Ager: A Remarkable Woman and Her Contributions to Spokane
For over 130 years, the Spokane Club has been a hub for the community's most prominent leaders, including Jeanne Ager. Since joining in 1966, Jeanne has become a fixture of the Club's social scene, known for her friendly demeanor and unwavering commitment to philanthropy.
But Jeanne's contributions to Spokane go far beyond her membership at the Spokane Club. She has dedicated her life to serving others, and her impact can be felt throughout the city. Over the course of her career, Jeanne has served as an administrator and fundraiser for various non-profit boards and foundations for over 40 years.
Growing up in Spokane, Jeanne was exposed to the world of hospitality at a young age. Her mother, trained by the legendary Mr. Davenport himself, was a trailblazer for women in the industry when she became first female Davenport Hotel Assistant Manager. Her mother later married James S. McCluskey Sr., famous manager of the Historic Davenport Hotel and later, General Manager of the Spokane Club. Jeanne and her siblings ended up spending a lot of time at the Club, watching as it grew and evolved with the times. It was these pivotal years that instilled in Jeanne a love and appreciation for the art of hospitality that she has carried with her throughout her life. From watching Will Barron present the famous prime rib on a silver cart to the highly anticipated Father Daughter Dances, Jeanne cherishes the traditions of the Club, noting the importance of, “embracing quiet elegance inside a wonderful setting.”
In 1955, following her graduation from Washington State University, Jeanne and her husband, who was also a proud Spokanite, purchased a drug store in Spokane. When asked if she had ever considered planting roots anywhere else, Jeanne’s answer was a firm no. “We have a huge family here, supportive family, strong family. Mother ingrained in us to give back to the community and we have.” Jeanne’s family has been in Spokane for 5 generations. Running the drug store provided Jeanne with valuable administrative skills,

while her involvement in the Junior League of Spokane equipped her with essential leadership skills. These skills proved to be instrumental in Jeanne's subsequent career milestone. The founder of Greater Spokane Community Foundation, now Innovia, approached Jeanne and offered her the position of their first Executive Director, catapulting her into the world of non-profits. “You can’t imagine the skills you’re learning in any job you’ve got.” She brought many of their meetings to the Spokane Club, where it, “was really the center of a lot of power lunches.” Jeanne is happy to see the structure of the foundation remains the same to this day as Innovia continues to serve the people of the PNW.
With the sale of the Historic Davenport Hotel to new ownership and its frequent closure for renovations, Jeanne noticed a significant shift in the dynamics of the Spokane Club. The Club's history and prestige made it an attractive venue for important events, and its role as a hub for community leaders was cemented during the planning of the Expo of 1974. The Expo of 1974 was a major event in Spokane's history, and the leaders who planned it played a significant role in shaping the city's future. The fact that they chose the Spokane Club as their meeting place is a testament to the Club's importance in the community.
Ever a busy woman, Jeanne continued to make history by embarking on a long tenure as the first female member of the Spokane Central Lions Club in 1987. In the 90s, Jeanne founded Ager Consulting LLC, a fundraising and consulting firm focused on helping non-profits achieve their goals. She continues to work alongside her daughter, Jan Ager Karel, and together they have raised over $100 million through capital campaigns, grant writing, events, and fundraising for non-profits. She credits her younger perspective through continuing to work with her daughter but as technology evolves and changes, Jeanne notes that fundraising is still done best the same way it was 40 years ago, through face-to-face relationships. It’s one of the things that Jeanne likes most about being a member at the Club. “One of the things that should always continue is the wonderful service here. Even at my birthday party, I've known the banquet servers forever so it's like family. Your waiters and your waitresses become like family and I think that is the spirit to continue.” Jeanne had recently spent her 90th birthday celebration surrounded by a plethora of family and friends in the Library of the Clubhouse. “It was just incredible. It was elegant service, it was good food, and it was fun! The catering here has always been fantastic and that’s because of Jackie (Kiley).”

MEET THE MEMBERS
Jeanne's passion for serving others has been a driving force behind her success. She has a keen understanding of the importance of philanthropy in making a difference in the world. She has worked tirelessly to help non-profits secure the resources they need to fulfill their missions, from funding for medical research to support for the arts and education.
Jeanne's impact on Spokane will continue to be felt for generations to come. Her dedication to serving others and her tireless work to make a difference in the world are an inspiration to us all. We are fortunate to have her as a member of our community and grateful for the contributions she has made to our city. This summer, say hello to her as you’ll most likely find her on the patio of the 1910 Restaurant and Lounge. “Spokane is full of lakes but there’s nothing better in the summer than being on the patio when you’re in town.”
Cares
The Spokane Club Staff would like to inform all readers of our eSignals about a devastating fire that occurred recently in a village in Sudan, Africa. The fire has affected many families, including one of our staff members, Zenab. I regret to inform you that our staff member's family has been severely impacted by this tragic incident and is currently going through very tough times. The family has lost their home, belongings, and source of livelihood, leaving them with nothing but their lives. Our staff member is distraught and in urgent need of assistance to support their family during this difficult time. Zenab has sent them as much money as she can afford currently.
If you would like to help, please use this link to access an account we have set up to help her. Any contribution you can make, no matter how small, will go a long way in helping this family recover from their losses and get back on their feet. Please know even $10 has a lot of value in a village in Africa. We would like to express our sincere gratitude in advance for any support you may offer. Your kindness and generosity will make a huge difference in the lives of this family and help them to rebuild their lives after this tragedy.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

CUTTER COMES TO THE CLUB
EXCERPT FROM LIVING HISTORY WITH A LIVING LEGEND
By 1910, with 500 members and bursting at the seams, the Spokane Club had once again outgrown its location. Club leadership decided they needed a permanent home that would allow them the space to accommodate their next 500 members and well beyond that number. Kirtland Cutter, an esteemed colleague and member of the club, was called upon to create a permanent clubhouse. Cutter's name would become synonymous with the Age of Elegance in Spokane. Though lacking a formal education in architecture, Cutter had a solid background in art and a world traveler’s eye for classic design elements. His innate ability to “see” a finished structure in his mind’s eye, coupled with his consistent choice of technically gifted partners, were two of Cutter’s keys to success. Beyond his substantial
talent, Cutter was also a man who found himself precisely in the right place at the right time. Prior to the Great Fire, Cutter had won commissions to build some extraordinary private homes in Spokane, notably the mansion of James Glover, the founding father of Spokane, and the Gothic Tudor mansion, Undercliff, for F. Lewis Clark. But Cutter was still unable to find enough steady work in the field he loved. To supplement his income, he worked part-time at First National Bank for his uncle Horace. The day after the fire, with a business district to rebuild, Cutter quit his bank job and never looked back. The Cutterdesigned clubhouse on Riverside and Monroe was completed in 1910 and opened for member use in 1911. In December of that same year, the new Spokane Club was formally celebrated at a gala attended by over 700 members and their guests. For over 100 years, this Georgian Revival classic at the corner of Monroe and Riverside has been the central headquarters for the Spokane Club.
