In Between is a research facility for the International Center for Arid and Semiarid Land Studies. This specific research focuses on arid and semi arid environments, which have little to no productivity. Lubbock, TX is considered one of these semiarid climates, provoking the project to engage with the outside. The project develops around a continuous relationship between outside and inside. This relationship will allow the user to develop an understanding between the surrounding environment and the prominent research being conducted.
Site Plan The given site conditions are located on Texas Tech Campus, on the engineering key. More specifically in between the Civil Engineering building and former Holden Hall.

Maximizing on the relationship between outside and inside, the plans develop around the existing pathways/circulation. The ground level floor engages with the surrounding context and allows for circulation to pass through. This strategy, creates new subdivisons within the building, forming the respective placement of programs.

The remaining levels introduce new programs of research labs, offices, study areas, auditorium, and living spaces. The program progresses through three divisions: Research, Public, and Private, which are sequenced east to west respectively.
Wall Section DD highlights a unique overhang of the project located on the South facade. The overhang spaces are fully open to the exterior, offering an outdoor experience on all levels. The graphic demonstrates the function and structure of the project in this location.
Elevations North to West

Section CC

The elevations offer perspective of different access points to the research facility. The West entrance is open to the engineering key. This allows the research to become fully transparent to the campus and students.
The East entrance of the building, is still inviting for the lower levels. However, the walls become opaque, offering privacy to the residents and staff.
Section CC visually shows the program transitioning from research to public to private. This section also highlights the center core for public circulation, and the overall project engaging with its context.
