GLASS HARVARD SOCCER PLAYER athlete of the month

Matthew Glass is a twenty-year-old soccer player at Harvard University. Matthew grew up in Sierra Oaks Vista and has been playing soccer since he was four-years-old.

Matthew first began playing soccer on the Sierra Oaks Hawks, a recreational team coached by his father, and his best friend’s dad. These memories are especially valuable to Matthew, as he prepares to play for the second year on the Harvard Soccer team.

Growing up, he idolized his brother. He was the reason why he started playing and achieved such

success in the sport. Now he looks to professional players such as Lionel Messi, Andrea Pirlo, and Toni Kroos for inspiration.

From the ages of 4-18, Matthew has traveled all over California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada for his sport. Since attending Harvard, he has had the opportunity to travel all over the East Coast from Massachusetts to Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Rhode Island.

His most impressive honor received thus far has been being named the TopDrawerSoccer Top 100 Freshman List, where he was named the 50th best Freshman in the country across Division 1 competition.

Matthew feels he has been very blessed to have grown up the way he has, with the support of his family and friends, which has ultimately led him to have had the opportunities he has had now. Experiencing student life at Harvard is unique, and he appreciates every minute of it. He states, “Harvard is unique in that it is very diverse. I have made friends with students from all over the country and world and that is something that unfortunately many people don’t get to experience during their lives.

Another difference is that everyone is extremely motivated and driven to succeed. Students at Harvard don’t study or work hard because someone else is telling them to – the drive comes within the student. That is the reason they got to Harvard in the first place.”

Matthew’s tip for someone looking to get into soccer is, “always believe in yourself. Soccer is a game that is filled with moments of happiness and enjoyment, but also moments of frustration and heartbreak.”

I hadn’t thought about going to college as a fifth grader, but now I have. For kids wanting to have an opportunity to take a variety of courses at Sacramento State University, Academic Talent Search (ATS) is for you.

Classes are offered to 6-9th graders, but I was in 4th-5th. My ATS class was Writing Short Stories: Adventure and Fantasy. It was a great experience for me and the other young writers that wanted to learn better writing skills.

My teacher was Mr. Knorr, who teaches at Sacramento City College, and the Teaching Assistant, Katie. Katie was also a student at ATS when she was younger. Although she had completed her ATS class in the same room as me and the other students, she did not take Writing Short Stories, she took Journalism. My class was in Eureka Hall at Sacramento State.

Eureka Hall is on the southwest side portion of the campus and is one of the original buildings.

My fellow classmates at ATS were great writers and I was surprised to see that there were only fourteen people in my class. The writers in my class ranged from 9-12 years old. I was astonished to discover that some were from Auburn and one from Galt! I was impressed to see that they had traveled so far for this amazing class.

I learned a lot of tips for writing in the class. I was taught that the main objective of a good story is it must have a starting point.

The teacher calls it a DOA (Desire, Obstruction, and Action). The main character has a desire and something or somebody tells the main character that they cannot do it, which is the obstruction.

The action is what the main character does about the situation.

Another suggestion is a good story needs suspense, which gives tension to the reader about what is going to happen next. The Teachers Assistant encouraged us to use descriptive words. For example, instead of saying “I got home,” you replace “got” with “returned.” All stories have three types of characters: the round character which is the main character, the flat character, which is the character that supports the main character, and the foil who just pokes the main character.

I really enjoyed this class a lot. I think other young people should take this class in order to succeed in writing and do well in school with all of the new skills that they have learned.

Brandon and Catherine Bettar are a lovely couple who live in Sierra Oaks with their three daughters: Emma, Elizabeth and Olivia.

Brandon is from Los Angeles, is the General Sales Manager at two radio stations for Bonneville International, and has a great sense of humor. Catherine is from Sacramento and runs political partnerships and advertising for McClatchy in all of their California markets. She is the fearless and gracious leader of her three girls. The couple met while working together at CBS Radio, and the rest is history!

The lively couple love to cook together and host friends and family at their beautiful home. They savor quick getaways together to Napa, Sonoma, Tahoe and Carmel to sip wine and enjoy married life.

As a family, the Bettars enjoy movies, cooking, dancing, playing in the front yard, and lots of sports and activities. In the summer,

In-Home Care they frequently hang out at Rio Del Oro by the pool, and at Sierra Oaks Park. Most of the family vacations land in Lake Tahoe, an easy and fun destination for the five.

Emma is ten-years-old and adores ballet. She participates in the Sacramento Ballet and looks forward to trying out for the Nutcracker this coming holiday season. Elizabeth is an outgoing seven-year-old and a multi-sport athlete. She has recently taken an interest in the B Street Theatre and wants to participate in plays there in the future. The youngest is Olivia, the oh-so-cute and she knows it two-year-old. She is very sweet and has her dad wrapped around her little finger. Her days usually consist of playing and laughing with her big sisters.

Catherine and Brandon are members of the Sierra Oaks Neighborhood Association and love participating in the local Sierra Oaks events such as the July 4 parade and National Night Out. Their favorite part about living in Sierra Oaks is just being outside, enjoying their many friendly neighbors, and the safety and quiet of the area.

After spending nine years together (K through 8th grade), this would be their last organized field trip. Twenty-one kids and seven adults made the journey across the country to embark on a fun-filled, educational adventure in our nation’s Capital, Washington DC. The kids had just graduated from Sacred Heart Parish School and the adults were the brave parents who agreed to chaperone the trip. Five days of monuments, museums, history lessons, and tours combined with groups photos, selfies, silly stories and fun. We had a blast and would highly recommend others to consider coordinating such an adventure.

The trip was one of the most memorable vacations I have ever taken, and many of us wish we could go back and relive the experience again. I asked the kids for their thoughts on the trip and here is what a few of them had to say:

The graduating class of 2018 was lucky enough to have a parent that works for USA Student Travel/ Worldstrides, Gwen Shackelford. Gwen presented the idea to the parents in their 7th-grade year and we were fortunate enough to have the minimum of 20 participants (kids and adults) sign up. Gwen worked closely with the parents on a few fundraising opportunities and ensured all details were ironed out prior to our trip. The cost of the trip was very reasonable and could be paid through installments, which was convenient. Every detail was carefully planned from buffet breakfasts at the hotel, an evening dinner theatre (Newsies), a ghost tour in Alexandria, and very full daily itineraries including every monument and museum DC and the surrounding area had to offer.

“Washington DC has to be the best field trip in the world. Being able to see themonuments and parts of history that caused those monuments to change was to die for. For example, the Pentagon monument was two shades of gray because the 9/11 attack struck the Pentagon on a certain angle and then a slightly darker shade of gray was used to construct the rest of the Pentagon back together. The same is with theWashington Monument with the two shades of gray on the way up. My absolute favorite part of the trip was the air and space museum because seeing all the types of aircraft as well as spaceships and rockets which fascinated me a ton. My favorite part in the museum was the giant space shuttle which was massive and larger than I expected. I guess space shuttles have a bit more reinforced metal than I ever would have imagined. This was amazing and I would come back to see more monuments and artifacts from American history.” Noah Yonka

To the average person, a complete remodel job would seem daunting, but to the Mudgetts, this is one of the many houses they have transformed together over the years. John and Savannah have invested in distressed real estate properties and flipped approximately 15-20 of these homes a year for three years now. They learned the tricks of the trade through trial and error, and a whole lot of hard work.

Savannah has a background in design, and John has experience with investments, so together they make a dynamic team.

As for this home, though, they are not moving for a very long time. The couple plan to raise their two young children in the beautiful four bedroom, four bathroom house. Savannah states, “our family room brings a smile to our faces every day. The beautiful fireplace feels so sophisticated and yet the space is designed for our children with built-in toy drawers and open spaces. It’s a place we can all exist together without the “don’t touch that!” mentality that often accompanies adult spaces.”

The couple redid the kitchen, refaced the fireplaces, added all new interior lighting, painted, replaced the carpet, renovated the backyard and renovated the master bathroom. The results are stunning, sophisticated, but yet comfortable and inviting. Enjoy the photos of this beautiful family home.

Ingredients: 2 large sweet potatoes 3 cloves of garlic 1 jalapeño pepper 1 can black beans 1 can diced tomatoes 1 Tbs of chili powder 1 container Nola’s Salsa Fresca 8 whole wheat tortillas 1/2 tsp oregano 2 tablespoons olive oil, used in two steps Salt and pepper to taste

Spoon any remaining tortilla filling and salsa on top of the tortillas. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in your 350°F oven for 20 minutes. Serve hot and enjoy!

Method: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Rinse and dry sweet potatoes, and chop into 1/2 inch cubes.

Toss them with 1 tablespoon olive oil and salt and pepper to taste.

Lay the potatoes flat on the baking sheet. Roast until tender, about 20 minutes, stirring halfway through. Remove from the oven and set aside. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F. While sweet potatoes are roasting, wash and dry all produce.

Mince the garlic. Discard the jalapeño stem, remove its seeds, and mince. Drain and rinse the beans. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and jalepeño pepper. If you don’t love spicy food, use less than the full jalapeño pepper. Stir and cook for about 30 seconds. Add the beans, diced tomatoes and their juices, and the spice pack of oregano and chili powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

When done roasting, stir in the sweet potatoes and simmer for 5 minutes. Set aside.

Lightly oil a 9x13-inch baking dish with another tablespoon of oil.

Spread a thin layer of salsa over the bottom of the dish and set aside.

Place a tortilla on a flat work surface. Spoon a portion of the sweet potato sauté in the center of the tortilla and roll it up. Place the filled tortilla in the baking dish, seam side down, and repeat with the remaining tortillas and the black bean-sweet potato sauté.
