I grew up in Chico, moved away for a short time, and then moved back in 1992 right before my first son was born. In the few years that followed, two more boys were gifted to my tribe. We raised all three boys in

small-town Chico and the memories of lazy summer days, quiet swimming holes, and floating the flume together still linger in my mind. It wasn’t until after my youngest graduated high school that I moved to Sacramento to be closer to my family… all of whom live here now, except my boys.

NS FFI Ingredients: 2 cups Paleo flour mixture 1 1/4 cup canned organic pumpkin 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp aluminum-free baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 cup melted grass-fed butter 1/2-3/4 cup almond coconut milk (use milk of choice) 3/4 cup monk fruit, (Lakanto), sweetener 3 pasture-raised eggs 1 tsp organic vanilla 1 cup chopped walnuts May add organic dark chocolate chips, coconibs *Paleo flour mix - I use Anthony’s brand from Amazon.

To make your own: 1 cup each organic: -cassava flour -almond flour -coconut flour -arrowroot flour -tapioca flour Directions: -Preheat oven to 340 degrees.

-Mix all dry ingredients and set aside.

-Mix all wet ingredients well and then slowly add in dry ingredients except nuts. Mix well. Once well mixed, stir in nuts.

-Place in greased muffin pan; I use a silicone one.

-Bake for 20-24 min for desired cooking level.

-Allow to cool before serving.

Meet Trailblazer GEOFF BLACK When it comes to being a trailblazer, resident Geoff Black is not afraid to lead the pack. Geoff has always loved riding bikes, from his childhood on through adulthood, saddling up for a ride is a familiar happy place for him.

“It seems cliche,” he states, “but that childhood feeling of freedom, it hits me every single time.” Nothing compares to the fresh air and opportunity of adventure when he goes for a ride.

Geoff began racing BMX bikes as a kid and loved it. When he was 20-years-old, a friend invited him to go out on a mountain biking excursion and he was hooked. As an adult he has raced all over Northern California, and continues to find new layers to the sport that he enjoys.

Geoff appreciates the challenges that cycling offers and now as a father, sharing his love of cycling with his two daughters.

His favorite places to ride include the Foothills, Georgetown, Cool, Auburn, and Placerville. With his kids, they enjoy Nevada City on the Hood Trail.

Geoff’s tip for getting started with cycling is to try out bib shorts over regular spandex, and to try chamois cream because simply put, it will “change your life!”

What Are You Going To Be For Halloween?

It’s October and it’s time to get your spook on and travel the Sierra Oaks neighborhood to trick or treat. Get ready for this year’s Halloween because it’s going to be a great one!

Here are some of the children who are going to be trick or treating:

Hayat Maita wants to be a Princess, a real princess at that. The princess costume will be very fluffy and the bottom half will go up if she spins. Hayat is in for a royal Halloween.

Maggie Gonzalez wants to be a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich.

Her costume will include a friend.

Maggie’s part of the costume is the part of the sandwich with peanut butter. Her friend will be the jelly.

Next is Dylan Ward. He wants to be SOMETHING SCARY! No one knows what is costume will look like, but I’m pretty sure he’s concocting a plan to scare the wits out of us if he is to be seen.

Ben Kiefer wants to be Darth Vader for Halloween; may the force be with him on his trick or treating journey.

We don’t cut corners, Grace Kiefer wants to be Bat Girl for Halloween. Make sure to say “hi” to this strong little girl.

Meet Nikki

Pet’s Name: Nikki Breed: Tabby Cat Age: 2 years old Where and why did you get Nikki?

We got her from the Sacramento SPCA in January of 2018. We, unfortunately, had to put down my 14-year-old dog Miles 2 months prior to getting her.

Everyone (excluding myself) wanted to get another dog after we lost Miles, so I met them halfway and got a cat – much more low maintenance.

Is there a story behind her name?

Sam was 4 1/2 years old at the time and wanted to name her T.Rex, which almost stuck, but later on out of nowhere, he chose Nikki, which seemed a little more fitting.

Anything special or unusual about her?

She is known to be a very social cat. She is always making friends with passing neighbors. In fact, our neighbors are aware of her affinity for getting into people’s cars so everyone is on the lookout for her, in fear of locking her in their car or driving away with her.

What do you like best about your pet?

She’s incredibly patient and loving, not just for a cat, but for a pet in general. I guess she has had to adapt to living with two rambunctious little boys.

Any funny stories?

So far she has brought dozens of lizards inside the house and three rats (Ew)! We’ve had to close her cat door into the house because she loved showing off her daily catches just a little too much.

How spoiled is your pet?

She is a very loved kitty. She is always curled up with someone in the family. Whenever we cook salmon for dinner we always make sure to give a little to her.

What else should we know about your pet and/or how your pet has enriched your home/family?

We think cats are often overshadowed by dogs and incredibly underrated. She has filled our dog void (for now) and continues to be a ball of furry love.

Celebrating The

SOUL Therapy Dogs On National Dog Day At Mercy General Hospital

Monday, August 26 was National Dog Day, and the SOUL Therapy Dogs were ready to celebrate!

These furry therapists help so many every week, bringing love and light to patients and staff every step of the way.

SOUL stands for Source of Unconditional Love, and these furry pals do just that! SOUL at Mercy began in 1994, and offers visits by four-legged volunteers and their handlers to patients and staff in Sacramento area Dignity Health Hospitals. The goal of the program is to improve the patient’s four functional domains: physical, emotional, social and cognitive. Numerous studies have stated the beneficial and therapeutic effects of animals on sick and older individuals.

Volunteers walk their pets throughout the hospital and are free to visit almost anywhere. Patients can request visits ahead of time, or may see the furry pals wandering around. The pets must be well trained in obedience and pass an evaluation, they also must be current on shots, healthy, and clean.

One of the volunteers, Susan Z’berg, states, “To be honest we get stopped many times throughout our visits by staff, patients, and other hospital visitors.

So many people just want to talk and pet the dogs;

many take photos. It is very rewarding to see the joy the pets bring. We have big dogs, little dogs, and dogs in strollers and all bring a big smile to work!!”

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY TO

Truman Schoenberger SIERRA OAKS RESIDENT FOR 51 YEARS

I was 4 years old when my family moved from Del Paso Manor to Sierra Oaks. The year was 1965, and at the time, our house was one of only three on the street, and neighbors were scarce. We were surrounded instead by orange, brightly flagged wooden stakes, marking lots, houses and friends that were still to come.

Over the next couple of years, one by one, they did. The lots were sold, the houses built, and the street filled in with families.

I wanted to share that 54 years later, I am back in my family home, enjoying co-ownership with my sister, after both of our parents have passed.

While much has changed here on Middleton, I marvel more at what has not. Unlike many other streets in Sierra Oaks, which now seem to be filled with young families, our street has seemingly bucked the trend.

Many of my neighbors have lived on this street for over 20 years, some 30 and a couple, over 50, since their homes were first built. While this history and continuity gives me roots, more importantly, it gives our Sierra Oaks community texture and color. I wanted to share one such bright spot of color found on my street, my sweet and sociable neighbor and Sierra Oaks resident of 51 years, Truman Schoenberger.

When I first moved back into the neighborhood in 2015, I’d run into Truman out on dog walks and shopping with Joyce, another longtime neighbor. I had known both Truman and Joyce most of my life, and loved whenever our paths crossed. “Hello Lissa!” Truman’s voice would ring out, accompanied by his quick smile and sparkling blue eyes, both of which would light up my day. Charming, active and handsome at age 95, he truly made getting older look good.

Charles Truman Schoenberger was born in Belleville, Illinois, on November 19, 1919. He spent his youth doing chores, running free, happy amongst the fields and fishing holes with his

older brother and trusty dog. Later, as a young man, he would move to Omaha, Nebraska, and work on telephone systems for General Electric. That was until, encouraged by his employer, and like many other men his age, he registered for the military draft and joined the war effort in 1942.

Serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the 17th Signal Battalion of the Army, he was part of the D Day invasion: “D Day plus 8,” landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy on June 14, eight days after the first wave. He continues to be amazed by and thankful for the fact that he survived what had deemed to be the unsurvivable.

After D Day, he and the 17th Signal Battalion continued on in their roles, supporting mobile communications for the 1st Army throughout the European Theatre until the war ended, with most of his time on foot, throughout France, Germany, and Belgium. Sitting with him in his family room in recent years, Truman would recount many stories about the fear and the daily rigors of war. Amongst these stories, he would also recall evenings spent drinking cognac with his comrades after taking possession of a German hotel. His favorite memory was carrying German actress, Marlene Dietrich across a muddy street, after one of her many USO shows, which provided live entertainment for and in support of allied personnel during the war.

Once back home from the war, Truman followed his brother and parents to California, settling in Sacramento, where he met his future wife, Mary. He attended Sacramento City College, earning an Associate of Arts Degree in 1948. From there, he continued on to McGeorge School of Law, where he graduated with Honors in 1955. By this time, he was a husband to Mary, and father to two children: Lesley and Charles. He began what would be a long and illustrious career with the State of

California and the Department of Mental Health, where he would later retire as acting Director.

Around 1967, while he was attaining his doctorate from McGeorge, Truman and Mary begin building a home in Sierra Oaks, where their daughter Lesley’s love of horses and son Charles’ love of motorcycles could be given free rein. At that time, Sierra Oaks was quite rural, with horse stables prevalent, and river trails and fields open to exploration, both on horseback and on horsepower.

The following year, the family would move to Sierra Oaks, and into their beloved home on Middleton Way, in which he would continue to reside after his wife’s death in 2014.

During these years, Truman made fast and lifelong friends with neighbors Denny and Donna Messner, Joyce Perich and Gene and Dorothy Gualco, all of whom still live on Middleton, each continuing to add their own texture and shades of color. Golfing dates, garage sale excursions, meals out, attendance at local music events and helping each other in the yard, all were integral parts of these years. There was also the weekly games of Scrabble, a standing date with the neighbors for years, great for keeping the mind sharp and cause for much laughter and friendly bickering – community at its best.

As Truman approached his late 90s, he finally gave in a bit to age, giving up driving and accepting the steadiness of a walker. He became to me and to Karen, another neighbor and friend, a sort of second father to us, after our much-loved fathers had passed.

No matter the time or day, he would welcome our company along with that of our dogs. He also became known to other younger neighbors on our street, who appreciated his warm personality and stories of the war.

We threw birthday parties for his 98th and 99th birthdays, and now we, along with his children are readying to do the same for his 100th. This coming November 19th, we are excited to celebrate our dear friend and his milestone birthday. To that end, he has been counting down 100 days to 100 years.

This past August, Truman, finally shed his Superman cape, and after so many years of living on his own, finally needed assistance. My sweet neighbor of 51 years, now has a new neighborhood, and community at the nearby Carlton Senior Living, but Sierra Oaks will always be his home and he will always, always be my neighbor.

The design process is simple. Jonathan draws the respective drawing out on CAD before printing them out on his 3D printer and casting them. He jokes, “I was doing 3D prints 13 years ago when the printer was the size of a copier.” Now a 3D printer is the size of a cube.

“I go above and beyond for clients regardless of budget,” says Jonathan Kozycz, owner of Jonathan K & Co. Fine Jewelry.

He has been in the industry for 28 years. He explains, “I actually grew up in the jewelry industry.

My family had a trade shop where I started as a jeweler.” His brother runs a retail store in Sacramento. After leaving the family business at age 18, Jonathan sold diamonds as a trade to other brokers.

He made his living from commissions from selling diamonds and learned a lot in the process.

At the age of 22, he opened his first retail location at Folsom, which he operated for almost a decade.

Following that venture, he served as the director at Michael Greene & Co. in Sacramento before launching his own business.

Specializing In Custom Work “Eighty percent of what I do is custom work,” says Jonathan. “Sometimes people have ideas of what they are looking for or want something large or unusual. I can design a piece for them. I build mounting for diamonds on necklaces or whatever piece of jewelry is sold.”

Working With An Independent Broker Makes Sense “Working with an independent broker (such as Jonathan) provides much better quality for jewelry pieces and is significantly less in cost,” says Jonathan. Jonathan also has decades of experience in the industry and his knowledge is an asset to his clients. Clients simply get more for their money.

Best of all, once Jonathan knows a client’s taste, he can choose selected pieces for them to view. He says, “I see people in their homes and businesses. Once I build a rapport with them, I can select pieces based upon what they are looking for.”

Jonathan adds, “I am a little different from your traditional jewelry store.” His boutique is more of an office type setting than a retail showroom with showcases. But his business is different from the traditional jeweler. He caters to his clients and their specific jewelry needs.

“Some people are searching for a long string of pearls. Other are looking for unheated sapphires, such as collectors. Others want colored stones that aren’t treated,” explains Jonathan.

Fall is upon us, and with it, this season brings change: changes in leaves, changes in temperatures, and changes in our schedules, routines, and activities. We’re busily (and, for some of us, reluctantly) trading our sun-soaked summer days for sweater weather, hot cocoa, and football games. As we make the transition to this coziest of seasons, and with the holidays just around the corner, let’s take a look at five fall organization tasks that will prep your home for the chilly days ahead!

2. Pack Up the Patio/Backyard

Pack away all outdoor kids’ toys (wipe them down first!), outdoor cushions and pillows, umbrellas, and hammocks. Cover your outdoor furniture with waterproof, heavy-duty material to protect it from the cold-weather elements. Give your grill a final scrub while reminiscing about the wonderful meals and fun get-togethers of the past few months, and tuck your grilling utensils away.

1. Swap Out Your Closet

It’s time to trade those strappy sandals and tank tops for boots, cozy sweaters, and scarves! Use this occasion to physically put your hands on each piece you own (accessories included!); ask yourself whether you’ve worn it in the last year and whether it still brings you joy. Donate items you’re finished with to your favorite charity or consignment shop, or, as I sometimes do, get a group of friends together to socialize and swap pieces, giving them new life. As you unpack winter clothing, take time to fold and organize by style or color, so you have a clear idea of what you have and what you might need to replace or purchase as the weeks grow colder.

Between apple picking and cool nights around the firepit, use your outdoor time this season to reseed any bare spots in your lawn, as well as mulch and fertilize your grass, trees, and shrubs. Don’t neglect those fallen leaves, as they can do damage to your lawn if left to their own devices.

4. Organize the Garage or Shed

Resist the urge to procrastinate on this one! Start by pulling everything out into the driveway and giving the floor a good cleaning. Next, get rid of anything you haven’t used in two years, or you no longer want, or is broken. Then, organize what’s left by use, such as tools and sporting equipment. Storage is key here. Use hooks,

pegboards, and wall shelves to lay everything out in a way that makes sense for your family.

5. Prime Your Kitchen for Holiday Cooking

For many of us, the kitchen is the heart of the home, and many of our fondest holiday memories revolve around time spent cooking and eating with family and friends. Now is the time to organize and swap out seasonal appliances (bye-bye, ice cream maker; hello, slow cooker!) and linens to prep your kitchen for holiday cooking and entertaining. Move the cookware you’ll be using most, such as mugs, roasting pans, and casserole dishes, to convenient locations while relocating warm-weather items to higher shelves or the garage or basement. Take the time, too, to replace any expired essential spices (like pumpkin pie spice!) and declutter your pantry.

While these tasks may seem overwhelming at first, remember, the sooner you get them done, the more time there will be left over to sit back with some apple cider or a hot toddy and enjoy the upcoming season with those you love.
