from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He used his wealth of knowledge to instruct others as a sociologist, criminologist, and university administrator. He also authored a number of textbooks in the subject of criminology. Before coming to Sacramento State as a dean in 1996, he was a member of the faculty at Tulane University in New Orleans for 21 years. He later became executive vice president and provost at Sacramento State and then president of California State University, Stanislaus in Turlock California.

Bernadette received her undergraduate degree from Emory University, a master’s degree from Georgia State University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder.

For her profession, Bernadette instructed others as a professor of counselor education. She taught graduate students at the University of New Orleans, at Sacramento State, and at California State University, Stanislaus. In her pre-faculty years, she worked at an Employee Assistance Program in Denver and Boulder; for a number of years, she also had a private practice in counseling.

Now she is enjoying retirement.

The Halbrook-Sheley Family “Family and friendships are two of the greatest facilitators of happiness.” –John C. Maxwell Who would have guessed that a meeting over coffee would lead to marriage? For Joe Sheley and Bernadette Halbrook, that wasn’t just wishful thinking but reality.

Both Joe and Bernadette found themselves widowed in the late 1980s. One of their mutual friends tricked them, calling each one and said that the other one wanted to meet and talk about being widowed. Their first coffee date in early 1990 was the beginning of their now 29-year-old love.

Joe grew up in Sacramento while Bernadette hails from Atlanta.

They moved into Sierra Oaks three months after their arrival in Sacramento in 1996. They love the casual and friendly nature of the neighborhood and count many of their neighbors as close friends. Walking in the neighborhood and biking along the American River Trail are special features of living in Sierra Oaks.

This happy couple also enjoys the constant companionship of Lucy, their 8-year-old Shih Tzu, who makes their house a home. Lucy came to them from the SPCA in Benicia when she was 18 months old.

Meet their daughter, Claire Halbrook Joe and Bernadette are blessed with one daughter, Claire Halbrook. She attended Sierra Oaks Elementary before Churchill Middle School where she participated in the International Baccalaureate Program. In 2006, she graduated from St. Francis High School and attended the University of California, San Diego. She graduated summa cum laude in 2010 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, “America’s most prestigious honor society.”

Upon completing her undergraduate degree, she was accepted into the Executive Fellows Program, a yearlong internship sponsored by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Upon completion of the Fellows Program, she was hired by PG&E to work in the area of energy renewal policy. After nearly five years, she took a twoyear leave of absence from PG&E to earn her MBA at the University of California, Davis. She completed her master’s in June 2018 and was chosen by the faculty and students of the College of Management to be their student commencement speaker. She returned to PG&E the following month and is currently a principal investigator in strategy formation.

Enjoying life in retirement Both Joe and Bernadette are enjoying life in retirement. For Joe, that means more time spent working in the garden, although his true love is baseball. He enjoys week-long junkets to multiple major league stadiums.

He has fond childhood memories of when the San Francisco Giants arrived in 1958, tracing his love of baseball to those early years and the huge rivalry between the Giants and the Dodgers.

He also supports the local Sacramento River Cats and is grateful for the high-quality baseball the team brings to the region.

Both share a love for education Joe earned a BA and MA from Sacramento State and his Ph.D.

Bernadette is always pondering their next trip, considering it a type of lifelong education. She is a self-described voracious reader and fan of numerous podcasts. Additionally, Bernadette is a novice bird watcher and is enthralled with the Night Sky. She appreciates the time that retirement provides to learn more about various spiritual traditions and is a student of Ayurveda.

Traveling is a pass time that both Joe and Bernadette enjoy. They have had the opportunity to travel to many places, including Kyoto, Japan and the Azores.

Bernadette’s work took her to China numerous times, and she sponsored a yearlong group of tax professionals from Hubei Province who came to Sacramento to study U.S. tax policy. Although they were recognized as rising stars in their fields, she quickly became their mentor and mom. They entertained the students in their home often during their year here, and their daughter left for her junior semester abroad soon after the students returned to China. Claire had chosen to study at a university in Shanghai, and one of the Hubei students was getting married during her time there. He insisted that she board a plane to his hometown and serve as a member of his wedding party. Claire, 5’10” and redheaded, was the only American among the 500 guests at the wedding. But it is an experience that she will never forget!

Interestingly, both Joe and Bernadette have a particular fondness for shows focusing on international cuisines, such as Chef’s Table and No Passport Required.

Connecting over meals Their love for international cuisine is evident in their family dinners. The whole family enjoys cooking together, creating all sorts of delicious dishes to please their

palates, including Chinese, Japanese, and Indian meals.

Bernadette states that Claire and Joe are both excellent cooks.

When together, they especially enjoy creating New Orleans-style meals. Their move toward vegan cooking has helped them expand their taste and menu choices.

When they go out to eat, their favorite restaurants are Lemon Grass and The Tofu House. Joe and Bernadette have drifted toward a plant-based (vegan) diet during the past few years and very much appreciate establishments that offer alternatives to traditional dishes.

Spending time together is what it is all about for Joe and Bernadette. A cup of coffee brought them together almost three decades ago, creating a relationship that has lasted the test of time.

Word on the Street: “What Are You Most Excited for this Summer?”

Christian O’Kelly “What I’m looking forward to most this summer is going to Camp Howard.

Camp Howard is in Oregon near Mount Hood. I love all the fun activities like laser tag and capture the flag. I think it’s the best summer camp in the world.

I am also looking forward to sleeping in this summer.”

Isaac Schwedler Isaac looks forward to going to his house in Delaware. In Delaware, he goes swimming and crabbing.

He says, “When you go crabbing you throw the line into the river. The bait is a cow tongue, and when they bite you pull them up just like in normal fishing.” Isaac also loves going to all the ice cream shops in the town square. He also enjoys going to Lifeguard Camp there as well.

Taylor Ward Taylor Ward is looking forward to swim team this season and going to Trinity Alps Resort. “Trinity is a tradition,” she explained, “that has been going on for about 40 years.” It is a big campsite where there is no wifi so we will have no access to the internet. Her excuse for not having Wi-Fi is so she can hang out with her her family and friends. Another thing she likes about Trinity is the General Store. The General Store has things that you would expect to have at a General Store but more. There is a whole arcade in a separate part of the store! She also enjoys petting and feeding the donkeys at the campground. Taylor also looks forward to the swim season.

Her favorite part about swim team is the swim meets. She likes them because she gets to hang out with her friends and loves to race other people.

Chase Maciel Chase looks forward to the baseball season, their annual trip to Lake Tahoe, and all the camps he does throughout summer. Chase loves baseball more than any other sport. He is yet again playing on the All-Stars. This is his third time making the cut. All-Stars baseball is very competitive and that is why he likes it. Their annual trip to Tahoe is another thing he looks forward to. He loves going to Tree Top Adventure in Kings Beach. Tree Top Adventure is a combination of obstacle courses and zip-lines. The reason why Chase loves it so much is because he gets to be in the trees. Lastly, he looks forward to all of his camps over the summer. They include Jesuit Camp, Sac State Baseball Camp, and Camp Rio.

We were looking for a nice family dog that wasn’t too big and had a great, loveable temperament. A friend told us to consider a Havanese, and after doing some research, we were sold. We worked through a reputable breeder to find the perfect dog, Charlotte.

We couldn’t leave the puppy by herself at home, so my husband took her to work every day and she slept under his desk. After about three months, we thought she needed a playmate, so we acquired our second Havanese, Lola.

Is there a story behind their names?

Well, we liked the name Charlotte and it seemed to fit her; she is more quiet, docile, and restrained. Lola, on the other hand, is spunky and she is much smaller than Charlotte at 7 pounds.

Charlotte is a bit more “prosperous” according to our veterinarian, at 19 pounds — probably from a few too many treats.

Is there anything special or unusual about them?

Havanese are so high maintenance in the love department, oh my goodness. They need constant love and attention, and they just want to be near you, if not right next to you or on top of you. If you walk into the kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom closet, they are right at your heels. If you are sitting on the couch, they want to sit right next to you or on your lap.

Another time, we noticed that someone found a lost dog and posted it on Nextdoor with a picture of the dog. When we looked, it was Lola. We contacted the person and retrieved Lola, wondering how she escaped our very secure backyard. At the time, we had some workers at the house, so we assumed she darted out of the house or yard undetected. Then, the next day someone else posted that they had found a lost dog, and they posted a picture of Lola. Oh my gosh, we were beside ourselves. We retrieved the rascal and my husband discovered that she had dug a small hole under one of the fence boards, into our neighbor’s back yard, then she set herself free into Sierra Oaks. She is definitely a curious explorer.

How spoiled are your pets? Well, we spare no expense on these girls, probably like many dog owners. Between their high-quality food, trips to the groomer and beauty parlor, and lots of chicken jerky dog treats every day, they are spoiled beyond belief. Not to mention that our bed has become their bed, and we just get to sleep in it.

What else should we know about your pets?

Well, suffice it to say, a house is not a home without pets, and our dogs are simply irreplaceable. They fill our home with love, by giving us constant love and attention, and by inducing us to be so vulnerable with our feelings for them. Our life would be much less fulfilled without our furry friends, and we love every minute we have them in our lives.

One of our neighbors, who shall remain nameless (but you know who you are), also had a Havanese named Mini, who has sadly passed away. One of Mini’s owners told me that Mini was so needy that the husband had to hold her every morning while he shaved in the mirror. That says as much about Havanese owners, and how much we are bonded with these love machines, as it does about how much love these dogs have to give us.

Havanese not only have perfect dispositions to be family dogs, but they are very smart and trainable, often used in the circus.

What do you like best about your pets?

They are so incredibly loveable and needy, and their faces are so cute — it’s so easy to love them up and kiss their sweet faces.

Any funny stories?

Well, Lola is adventuresome, like Dora the Explorer, while Charlotte is not one to ever wander far from you. When we go to the park, Lola will run to the furthest point and sniff along the perimeter, looking for another place to go. One day, our front door didn’t latch properly and when we returned home, our front door was open and Charlotte was waiting on the porch for us, but Lola was gone. My husband was running through the neighborhood calling for Lola, and then a woman drove up with her window down and asked him if he was looking for a little dog, which she had found thankfully. Lola had wandered to the Union 76 Station at the corner of Watt Avenue and Fair Oaks Boulevard.

Available in planks or tiles, LVT uses a realistic photographic print film and a clear vinyl layer that opens up a wide variety of design concepts. Even the most trained of eyes have a hard time distinguishing LVT from the products it mimics. Usually glued down, it also comes with a locking profile.

This style of flooring will expand and contract more than the WPC or SPC due to not having the core.

In 1999, Ralph moved his business to Sacramento. Operating out of his garage until 2001, Ralph secured a space in an industrial park in Sacramento and brought his son and daughter on to expand the business.

Ralph became known as the “bargain hunter” because he would search for deals through his suppliers, buy their closeouts, and extend the discounts onto his customers.

“With a warehouse full of inventory, you could always come to Ralph and find a bargain. Since then all brands and types of flooring are sold and installed,” his daughter, Lynn Lawson recalls.

Ralph retired in 2009, and now Lynn owns the family business. With the knowledge she learned from

her father, Lynn’s top priority is to provide personal and knowledgeable service to her many customers.

She also, too, loves to pass along a great bargain.

SPC is more dent resistant and somewhat more dimensionally stable. Both products offer tremendous value to the end user because they are rigid and waterproof. WPC and SPC can each utilize any number of applied decorative surfaces. What is most common in the marketplace today is that WPC core is usually coupled with the traditional LVT material generally 1.5–3.0 mm in thickness resulting in a thicker overall panel. SPC products on the other hand, sometimes feature only a decorative print layer and protective wear layer thermally fused to the core.

The prices of these floors are driven by many things including how wide the boards are, how thick the core of the board is, if the board has a pad attached, if the edges of the boards are beveled or not, how much of a wear layer there is on the top of the board, how long the boards are, etc.

Summer is officially here! We’re all dusting off our outdoor furniture, stocking up on sunscreen and getting ready for the season of swimming in Sacramento. Now is the perfect time to review water safety by implementing layers of protection to reduce the risk of drowning. At Little Whale Swim School, we promote the “Safer 3 Message”: 1. Recognizing risks associated with water-related activities 2. Implementing strategies to reduce and manage those risks 3. Responsibly maintaining those strategies The top 3 water safety tips include: Safer water: Identifying the risks associated with all bodies of water (bathtubs, pools, spas, lakes, rivers or oceans). Reducing those risks by installing barriers such as isolation fencing around a backyard pool, ponds, and spas. This helps reduce the risk of unsupervised access to water by young children.

Safer kids: Understanding the responsibility for parents and caretakers to promote water safety which includes constant supervision by responsible (sober) adults. Combine this with swimming skills attained through year-round swim lessons for kids — and adults!

Safer response: Reviewing emergency response techniques and emergency action plans as a path to water safety. Learning CPR and first aid, as well as having a phone by the pool at all times, are just a few of the water safety tips covered here.

Remember: drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under age 5.

A note from Bernadette: This is a great recipe from Deepak Chopra. They are nutritious and provide energy for a quick snack that both children and adults enjoy. They are easy to make and very portable.

Ingredients 1 cup pine nuts (we often substitute toasted walnuts since pine nuts are quite pricey) 1 cup toasted sunflower seeds 1 cup toasted whole almonds 2 cups dried cranberries (or substitute a dried fruit of your choice 2 tablespoons maple syrup (can substitute a local honey) 1 teaspoon good quality vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon (can substitute nutmeg if you prefer that flavor) ½ cup toasted coconut flakes ¼ cup dark chocolate, flaked Method Place nuts in food processor and pulse until coarsely ground; add the dried fruit and pulse 3–4 times, then add syrup or honey, vanilla, and cinnamon or nutmeg. Continue to pulse until mixture begins to stick together. Taste for sweetness and add more maple syrup or honey if desired.

Place toasted coconut flakes in flat bowl. Remove mixture from food processor and roll into 1 inch balls. Then roll them in the coconut flakes (and chocolate if used) until fully coated. Store in an airtight container. Enjoy!
