Valentine’s Day. In theory, it’s a day

that many people set aside to let their loved one know they care. In reality, getting ready for Valentine’s can actually be pretty stressful. Coming up with interesting ideas can be hard. If you want to do something besides go to dinner, you might find it difficult finding creative solutions. Fortunately, in a city as big as Houston, you can find plenty of things to do with just a little research.

Mine by Jason Luthor

One fun way for couples to celebrate Valentine’s Day is with a stay at a bed and breakfast. There are plenty around Houston, with some located in Midtown and others located on rustic farmlands throughout Fort Bend county. A stay at a bed and breakfast is a lot cozier than

staying at a hotel, and many are family owned. If you want to stay somewhere and wake up to a delicious meal in the morning, you might want to think about booking a bed and breakfast. Plus, because the accommodations are so cozy, you’ll have plenty of chances to chat with other guests who are spending the night.

cooking classes. There are plenty of organizations and restaurants throughout the city, like urban Chef and Well-Done Cooking Classes, that offer cooking courses. By the end of the evening, you might learn how to make anything from down south comfort food to enticing Italian dishes. Just pick the course that’s right for you!

Does your partner love the arts? You might want to visit the Sugar Land Art Center and Gallery. The Art Center is committed to promoting the arts and offers plenty of classes that you can take part in. These classes are a great way to learn how to paint. Best of all, there are plenty of different types of classes you can take part in. Acrylic painting, oil painting, and collage creation are just a few of the courses they offer, but you don’t have to enroll for the entire month. You and your significant other can stop in for just one class, then enroll for the month if you really like it.

Nature lovers might want to travel into Houston to visit the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. This lovely locale sits on 155 acres of land. Filled with five miles of walking trails that are open to the public, the Nature Center provides beautiful views of the natural landscape that are hard to find anywhere else in Houston.

If you want to do something for couples but aren’t sure about the arts, you can also take couples

With so much to do around the city, you won’t find it hard to start planning your Valentine’s date. Of course, you can always just grab dinner at any one of the city’s many famed restaurants. However, if you’re looking for something a little more interesting, there are plenty of creative dates to be had around town. January 2018

health report Houston Methodist Sugar Land offers ‘Beat the Pack’

program to give smokers a successful start on resolution to quit

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is offering a unique program designed to help people quit smoking, beginning in January. The program, called Beat the Pack®, was developed by Pfizer Inc. and is sponsored by Houston Methodist Sugar Land Respiratory Therapy Department and Cancer Center. The first session is scheduled for Jan. 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Houston Methodist Sugar Land’s Main Conference Room A. Participants will meet once a week, for four weeks with a trained facilitator from Houston Methodist Sugar Land who will provide tools, tips and support to help smokers create and follow through with a personalized “quit plan.” “Studies show that close to 70 percent of smokers in the U.S. want to quit,” said Amy Sebastian-Deutsch, director of oncology and infusion therapy services. “But it typically takes a

smoker between six and 11 attempts at quitting to finally succeed. Beat the Pack is a proven program that can greatly increase those odds and make it easier to give up cigarettes for good.” Even long-term smokers can benefit from quitting. “The health benefits of quitting begin almost immediately and continue indefinitely,” said Sindhu Nair, M.D., a board-certified hematologist oncologist with Houston Methodist Oncology Partners at Sugar Land. “Within months, former smokers will have improved circulation and reduced blood pressure, enhanced oxygen flow, the return of taste and smell and less coughing and colds. After a year, their risk of heart disease will be reduced by half. And after 10 years of living without cigarettes, the risk of heart attack or cancer is similar to that of someone who never smoked.” In 2015, a thorough compilation of more than 50 smoking cessation

studies that included more than 25,000 participants found that combining behavior support in a group setting with medication provides the best results. “It isn’t easy to quit, and certainly it is more difficult to do so by yourself,” said Sebastian-Deutsch. “Beat the Pack provides all the tools and support needed, and it does so in an informative, friendly atmosphere that offers encouragement and camaraderie.” The four-week program will be offered each quarter in Main Pavilion Conference Room A at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. Registration is required. For more information or to register, visit houstonmethodist.org/ events and search for Beat the Pack, or call 281.205.4514. When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, one of the most popular goals people set is losing weight. Unfortunately, losing weight can also be incredibly difficult. For some people, it can seem impossible. Keep your head up though – with the right type of preparation, you can achieve a new you. It will take time, but you’ll see results if you stick to a few proven habits. First of all, from the outset, you’re going to want to change how you think about weight loss. Your goal shouldn’t be to lose weight just to lose weight. Your goal should be to get healthier. Weight loss is just one part of getting healthier. With that out of the way, you’ll be ready to start actually taking up the habits that will get you in better shape. You’ll want to start out by getting a good idea of how much you weigh. Make sure to weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before you’ve had a chance to eat, and write down the day that you took your weight. You’ll want to weight yourself at least once a week, and maybe even twice. The people who are most likely to lose weight check on their progress once to twice a week. Now, part of the biggest changes you can make isn’t to your exercise level. Instead, the biggest change you can make is to your diet. Since it can take some people up to an hour to work off just two slices of pizza, you’ll want to be careful

with what you’re putting into your body. One of the easiest ways to make sure you’re eating right is by planning your meals in advance. People choose to do this so that they won’t accidentally make bad choices during the week. On Saturday or Sunday, before your work week has started, take a minute to buy some healthy groceries and prepare meals for your week. Put together delicious salads tossed with spinach, tomatoes, and other vegetables. Also, don’t forget to include fruit, which provides a healthy boost to your system. Finally, throw in some lean proteins, like grilled chicken. By getting your food made ahead of time, you’ll be well prepared for the week. While changing your diet is the most important thing you can do to improve your health, you don’t want to forget exercise. Start slowly, beginning with low intensity workouts and ramping up the intensity as the weeks pass by. Plan to get yourself into the gym at least a few times a week and shoot for getting in at least a weekly total of four hours of workout time. You’ll find it’s a lot easier to stick to your exercise routine if you do things you enjoy, whether that’s playing a sport or taking a class.

tep

Half the challenge of getting fit is being prepared. By planning your meals and finding activities you like, you’ll be halfway to dropping weight and feeling more confident about your health.

the list Alisa Murray’s Top 10 Things To Do In January 2018 With Auntie A 1. Purchase a family pass to The Museum of Fine Art and create a family calendar for the whole year planned with a monthly visit to tour the traveling artist featured and talk a few classes to enrich the whole family.

6. This year we are going through the attic. After Harvey, we have yet to delve into the many boxes that 27 years a marriage and children can bring. I am going to do it and use my throw, keep, and give away approach to making an organized attic for my home. These cooler months are the only time we have to do it, so if you’re like me and need to do it… now is the time.

You’ll need:

2. It’s time to remulch and refurbish the beds in the yard… at least in the front! You’d be surprised at how much of a difference planting a few yellow and purple plants brighten up your curb appeal during these few colder months!

7. Start going through those closets and creating your donate, keep and throw away piles! Plan for an hour each day doing some sort of organizing and soon your entire house will be done!

3. Schedule with your travel agent or begin looking online to plan for the Spring Break trip mid-March. Now is the time to land in some amazing places for a fraction of the price!

4. Make ahead my Enchilada Sloppy Joe’s and you will have one less thing to worry with come suppertime. Paired with a clean fresh salad made from lettuces and radishes and your all set! (see recipe) The family will love them and they are so easy to make!

5. On my night side table now… Max Lucado’s “More to your Story” and “God’s Perfect Timing” by Rev. J Martin.

9. Collect all your magazines and tear out the articles and ads that you will be using and recycle the rest. 8. Drop off little goodie bags with valentines and candy to the nursing home so the elderly will feel some extra love early next month.

10. Take the children and your husband/ wife out on a picnic. NO CELLPHONES ALLOWED!

Antie A’s Enchilada Sloppy Joe Skillet Add some flare to your old sloppy joe recipe! Make ahead of time, just pour the mixture over before sticking in the oven! Pair with a fresh green salad for a balanced meal for your famiy dinner!

1 lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef 1 can (4.5 oz) chopped green chiles 1 can (10 oz) Enchilada Sauce Mild 1 1/2 c shredded Cheddar cheese (6 oz) 1 cup Original Bisquick™ mix 1 cup milk 1 egg

1. 2.

3.

Start by heating oven to 400°F. In 10-inch ovenproof skillet, brown beef over medium heat, crumbling as it cooks; drain fat. Stir in chiles and enchilada sauce. Top with cheese. In small bowl, stir Bisquick™ mix, milk and egg with fork until combined. Pour mixture over cheese. Bake about 30 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

ORGANIZATION

Well my friends, it’s January! With the beginning of each year most of us want to assess things, improve ourselves in some way. That’s where all the resolutions come from right? Organizing, I have found is either something one does oneself or something that you hire for others to do for you. It’s one of those tasks that everybody should be great at theoretically but reality is only a very few of us even like doing it. lol I am not one of them. Many years ago, I ran across a book that explained how to continuously remain organized by always classifying your stuff. “Put Away”, “Give Away” and “Throw Away” were the three categories to live by and to a certain extent I have tried my hand at that throughout my adult years. It isn’t easy though and as time has gone by I have found it very difficult to give away any Legos or American Girl dolls or… and the list goes on. Here’s why… there’s a closet under the stairs at my mother in laws home that has toys in out from when my husband was a child. Grandchildren and now great grandchildren are still playing with those same toys! I figure boxing them up and having them for later was and still is my best use of that investment. Granted it does take up a ton of space in the attic and I don’t remember where anything in particular is, but I

know one thing…. I have all of their childhood hidden up there because I never threw it or gave it away! My friends laugh at this nonsense of keeping things and some might even, although not while I’m around, whisper I could be considered a closet hoarder, but I maintain that it’s just silly to have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on beautiful toys and clothes for the children to just toss them away when outgrown. I also know what it feels like to not go back to a home from childhood and to have my toys given away without my permission. I remember going back home and asking where my Barbies were along with all the clothes that my grandmother had sewed for them; for me to discover that my step person had given them away. Oh, how I wish I had them when my daughter was little

and I will still be wishing for them when my grand babies come along. Call me sentimental… thankfully my son feels the same way. He started early making sure all the Star Wars and tractors were boxed up for safe keeping. It’s funny hearing a 7-year-old stake a claim to his toys for the future with his children. An old soul for sure like me he must be! After all, one can never have too many Legos! I don’t know what happened exactly except to say that when we had Harvey my house got turned upside down and with new walls and furniture also came this desire to, for the first time in my life too I might add, go up in that attic of mine and bring everything down. Go through each box and each container and decide if this or that really suits me anymore and if I really do need every toy I have ever bought for my children. Maybe it’s a sign of menopause, perhaps shifting the room that once was my daughter’s princess realm to a music room for my son and husband sparked it? I do not know. In either case that’s the big plan for 2018. Now that the house has been completely restored to better than already perfect glory and the holidays are behind me; I am set about thoroughly disassembling my attic and making the decisions as to what I should “Give Away”, “Throw away” or “Keep!” There might be a garage sale in my not so distant future too, but I doubt it!

lysoun Marks says, “I’ve been receiving chiropractic care since I was a teenager. When my husband and I moved to this area last year, all the moving and unpacking gave me a real pain in my back...so I looked for a chiropractor and I found Dr. Steve Harris at the Sugar Land Health Center. He did such good work that I was excited to learn he offered a weight loss program. Dr. Harris’ wife sat down with me and went over all the steps of the program and it couldn’t have been easier!” “Over the past eight years, I’d put on about sixty extra pounds as a result of treatment for breast cancer and my subsequent thyroid disease. Over those years I also suffered setbacks like a pinched disc in my back and a broken ankle. I tried to exercise, but all those hiccups made weight loss so difficult. Dr. Harris’ program made everything simple. In the first place, I really wasn’t hungry at all! My husband and I did the program together to support each other...but he’d been worried it would be one of those diets where you’re starving all the time. Secondly, we actually both saw very rapid weight loss. I lost thirty pounds in one month and he lost thirty-five! I think that this is a breakthrough in losing weight because it makes your body healthier while rapidly dropping weight and requires low discipline.” “Losing weight quickly meant we didn’t have to sustain willpower for very long. Maintaining the weight loss has been much, much easier than losing weight ever was! You get a clear meal plan that’s easy to understand and follow.
