listWORTHY DESIGNER OF THE YEAR KIMBERLY PAULUS Decorating Den's

Franchise owner Kimberly Paulus, of Missouri City, (www.kimberly.decoratingden.com) was named Designer of the Year, the highest design award presented by Decorating Den Interiors, North America’s largest interior design and home furnishings franchise company and leading in-home decorating service. Her makeover of a bedroom was judged the best of 385 entries in 12 categories by a panel of interior design journalists from across the U.S. and Canada.

“I am thrilled to win this honor,” said Paulus. “This master suite design centered on our client’s beautiful artwork and the goal of creating a transitional retreat with a serene, relaxing atmosphere in a blue and grey color story. Detail trim work accents the wall sconces, bed and artwork while breaking up the expansive space. Varied fabrics add depth and texture while furniture pieces add interest and balance. The selection of sheer window treatments frame the seating area without dominating the space and soft lighting adds to a quiet mood. We are so grateful for our wonderful clients, Michael and Estrella Alberter, who offered their room as a canvas for our work.” Paulus also was tied for third in the living room category. Her master suite also won first place among the designers who entered the competition for the first time, while her commercial project was judged second best among first-timers. This was the company’s 35st International Dream Room Competition. Her awards were presented at the company’s 50th anniversary conference and supplier market held at Paris Las Vegas. Paulus also will be honored at a dinner in New York City. She also was honored for being in the top 10 franchises for sales last year and for reaching a significant milestone for cumulative sales. Decorating Den Interiors was founded in 1969 and has interior design professionals and decorators throughout the U.S. and Canada. “We offer our clients fine furniture, case goods, accessories, lighting, floor and wall coverings, draperies and other hard and soft window treatments from our LIVV Home CollectionTM of furnishings,” Paulus explains. “We bring samples directly to the client’s home or office, provide complimentary design services and personally oversee projects through installation.”

silver screen THE GOLDFINCH September 13th

Theodore Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day -- a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch.

JUDY

September 27th Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer.”

ABOMINABLE September 27th

GET THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR REMODELING BUCKS! Are you looking to spruce up the look of your home or tackle a renovation project? When looking to remodel, ask yourself, “Will I get a good return on my investment?” Before you decide to dive into a big remodel, take the time to really evaluate whether or not you will see those dollars back in the event that you decide to sell your home. Let’s take a look at five updates that will get you the best return on your investment. Does your garage look like it has seen better days? Believe it or not, this relatively “small” project will result in about 95% return on your investment. Not only does it help secure your home, it can add some really nice curb appeal that will add value instantly!

1

Are you wanting to add a little “depth” and texture to the exterior of your home? Consider adding manufactured stone veneer or updating/replacing the siding on your home. Manufactured stone veneer is significantly less than other alternatives and can add that extra pizazz accent that homebuyers look for when they drive past a new listing.

2

Who doesn’t love a great front door? If this “centerpiece” isn’t an ideal focal point on your home, consider an update. You could opt to replace your front or simply add a coat or two of paint and bring your current door some new life!

3

Inside of the home, the kitchen is the place to invest your remodeling dollars. Think “mini-makeover”. Investing in updated fixtures, countertops, floors and/ or cabinets can make a big impression on a future buyer.

4

Lastly, a fun and inviting outdoor space is an added perk to any home. Looking for some an additional area to entertain or just relax? Consider adding a new deck and extending your home’s livable space. Cost will vary depending on size and materials used, but you will love getting a roughly 75% return on this outdoor investment!

Ridge Point Students Impress at World Scholar’s Cup Competition in the Netherlands

T

his summer, former Ridge Point High School students, twins Brady and Colby Sanders, along with a teammate from Dubai, earned the title of World Champions at the prestigious Global Round of the World Scholar’s Cup in the Netherlands. The World Scholars Cup is an academic tournament and enrichment program that features not only spirited competition, but also cultural experiences, community-building opportunities, and a celebration of learning. In addition to earning first place overall among nearly 2,000 scholars from more than 50 countries, the Sanders’ team finished 2nd in the Scholar’s Challenge, 3rd for Team Debate, 5th for Collaborative Writing, and 6th in the Scholar’s Bowl. The twins’ younger brother, Holden, also competed in the middle school division, earning three gold and two silver medals.

This is not the first go-round at the World Scholars Cup for the 2019 graduates. As middle schoolers, they earned seventh place in team debate at the 2014 event in Singapore, and in 2018, they, along with their teammate William Shein, finished third in the world in team debate in Barcelona, Spain. Because of their impressive history with the program, Brady and Colby were invited by Daniel Berdichevsky, the founder of the World Scholars Cup, on a trip of a lifetime, traveling with and working for the program.

Brady explains, “We were very fortunate that he was interested in bringing us on board for a gap year before college, and we’ve been working for them since. We’ve already been to South Africa and Sydney for four

competitions.” Colby relishes the chance to experience different cultures first-hand in preparation to eventually share his knowledge and experiences through a career in film. “In the long-term, I hope to one day work as a screenwriter or director,” he says, “and I am going to use this opportunity to learn more about the world around us as there are so many great stories about people everywhere that haven’t been told.” The boys’ father, Craig Sanders, a teacher and the Academic Decathlon coach at Ridge Point High School, was instrumental in helping Brady and Colby, as well as other students, prepare to compete. One road to the World Scholars Cup is to join a high school Academic

Decathlon team, fondly known among students as AcDec. High school AcDec teams compete in local, regional, state, and possibly national and international competitions on a variety of subjects, including literature, music, art, science, social studies, history and special topics, all related to a common theme. Ridge Point’s team under Sanders’ guidance has an impressive record of success, fielding the winning Houston regional World Scholars Cup team five of the six years he has coached. Students aspiring to participate with Academic Decathlon and possibly the World Scholars Cup should contact the coach at their high school and consider taking the AcDec class if their school offers one, an honors level elective course that can be taken during any year of high school.

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO IN THE MONTH OF

1

In the Garden, it’s time to plant fall tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, kale and lettuce varieties. Mulch and till in manure to ensure a nutrient rich soil that will feed the plants as we go onto the cooler months.

2

September

Refurbish around the patio or pool with new annuals like petunias that like it a little cooler mixed with perennial greens tumbling off the planters will perk up the outdoor space after all the hot baking days of this summer.

3

Clip and freeze herbs for use in soups and stews this winter. Carve out an afternoon to blanch and freeze fresh green beans, okra and corn as well.

4

Making a batch of tomato jalapeño jams and storing them in the pantry will get you a head start for gifts this holiday.

5

Invite the mothers from your child’s class for a monthly collective to collaborate. You can share ideas about life and parenting and use the together time to learn more about pairing the proper wines with dishes for fall festivities and share recipes.

6

Go through the hall and personal closets and see if there are any outgrown outerwear that can be donated to a family or child in need. If you are so inclined purchase blankets while they are not needed with it still warm outside to give for later to our elderly community.

7

On my night side table now “Turtles all the way down” by John Green and “The art of racing in the rain” by Garth Stein.

8

Time to begin thinking about your holiday style guide and I love picking up a few tips for makeup trends on Pinterest. Everything is looking shimmery from eyes to cheeks to gloss and the way to make it pop is to add a bold lip to a very polished neutral face palate.

9

Dressing the table is all important too and using fall leaves and small pumpkins makes your home feel festive. Simmer some cinnamon and cloves on the stove and get in the mood for a fabulous fall!

VOLUNTEERING WITH THE BIG 5 CONFERENCE Written by Jason Luthor

T

he Big 5 Conference, a religious organization with a mission to share the Gospel with children around the world, is looking for volunteers to help host the event. The conference is a family friendly event that primarily targets children in the hopes of equipping them with confidence to become a world changing generation. With so many events created to address women, business owners, and men, the conference sponsors felt there needed to be an event that spoke specifically to children. The conference was created to instill in children the belief that they could do great things. By giving them confidence rooted in a religious foundation, conference founders Martin and Lannessa Moshay hoped to make a new generation of kids the leaders of the future. Since its creation, the conference has gone on to not only feature entertaining shows, but to host workshops and group events where attendees can learn the skills necessary to become leaders. By keeping these events faith based, the conference hosts hope to provide a moral foundation for using those same leadership skills. Although the conference is open to everyone, it remains rooted in faith and religion. And, since it’s a religious event, all volunteers are first asked to sign a Statement of Faith and dress modestly during the conference. As long as volunteers are willing to live up to the standards of the conference’s hosts, then they help in any of the many activities that will be going on throughout the day. The events kick off with the Grand Entrance and Market Place. This kickoff to the conference starts with a high energy performance and a chance for kid-preneurs to advertise their services and goods they’ve made. Local business owners can also advertise during the Market Place., and local community organizations can talk about the services they provide to Fort Bend County. Performance is at the heart of the conference, which explains why so much of the conference is centered around shows.

Kids Blitz Ministries will be arriving from Kentucky to help throw a high energy show that features kids entertaining the crowds. There will also be bands, dancers, and puppeteers on the BIG stage. Once again, kids will be entertaining the crowds, with children coming in from all around Texas to showcase their talents. For the most part, volunteers will help keep things running so that the shows go off without a hitch. Anyone interested in volunteering will want to get in touch with the Big 5 Conference on their website, thebig5conference.com. Potential volunteers can fill out the online form to get on the list of volunteers. If you want to learn more about the organization, you can either call the conference hosts at (802) 294-2445 or email them at info@thebig5conference.com. The conference will run between 10:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 12th at Sugar Land Town Square.

community spotlight Making the Most of the Fort Bend County Fair

T

he Fort Bend County Fair runs between Saturday, September 14th and Sunday, October 6th. However, despite how long the event runs, there are certain days that are more active than others. Anyone looking to make the most of the fair will want to show up on certain days. Friday, September 27th will be one of the two most action packed days of the event, so it’s one that you won’t want to miss. Things kick off at eight in the morning with the Rabbit Show, with rabbit owners showing off their breeds as part of the Junior Livestock Show. Rabbits will be judged at the George Barn, where other animals shows will also be hosted , including the Turkey, Goat, and Steer shows. Anyone interested in the animal breed events will want to spend their time around the George Barn during the festival, since animal shows will be going on nearly every day of the fair. One animal event that won’t be at the George Barn is the commercial heifer show, will instead be hosted at Barn H. This event will see cattle competing for the title of grand champion, recognizing the size and quality of the heifer. The commercial heifer show takes place at eleven that same morning, so attendees at the rabbit show will

Written by Jason Luthor want to quickly make their way over between events. For those less interested in animals and more interested in fun and games, Student Fun Day begins at one in the afternoon, so there’s no reason to show up earlier if you don’t want to see rabbits and cows on display. The Fun Day is designed to get kids from kindergarten to twelfth grade competing with each other for cash prizes. Although the events will begin at one, anyone who wants to compete will need to register between the hours of eleven that morning and 12:45 P.M. After the start of the Fun Day, it’s a long stretch before new festivities begin at six that evening. Things kick off with the goat show, but the entertainment begins at eight that evening with Hayden Baker before Wade Bowen takes the stage at 10. Saturday, September 28th is likely the second busiest day of the festivities and follows almost the same schedule as Friday. The broiler show starts at nine in the morning and a commercial heifer sale starts at noon. However, moms and dads might want to show up at 10:30 A.M. for the diaper derby, a race between babies that’s sure to be adorable. Another event that parents may enjoy is the School Art Auction. Local

artwork will be on exhibit as students compete for the title of Grand Champion. Afterward, the top exhibits will be moved to Building B, where they will be available for locals to buy. Besides these two days, Friday, October 4th and Saturday, October 6th are the only other days when the festival runs from morning to evening. These days will be stuffed with similar events, like the pet show and junior heifer show. Plus, more musical artists, like Neal Mccoy, David Lewis, and Jody Booth will be taking the stage to cap things off at the end of the night. september 2019

“We are proud to partner again with the local Exchange and Rotary clubs and Toys for Tots to provide this community offering,” said Chris Siebenaler, CEO of Houston Methodist Sugar Land. “This is a great way for the community to stay healthy while also putting smiles on children’s faces during the holiday season.” In 2018, Santa’s Gift Exchange provided toys and clothing to nearly 5,000 economically disadvantaged children in Fort Bend County. “Everyone's assistance is needed to meet the challenge of providing toys for children who will not have toys this year without our help,” said Brad Porter, chairman of Santa’s Exchange 2019.

“We look forward to partnering with Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for a ninth year. This is a great collaboration; get a flu shot and in return you are able to give back to the children in your community,” said Porter, a fourth year member of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land.

If you want to participate in this community event, please bring a new, unwrapped toy or clothing item to the Brazos Pavilion Atrium of Houston Methodist Sugar Land between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Oct. 12. One flu shot per unwrapped toy or clothing item. For more information, please visit events.houstonmethodist.org/flushot-sl or call 281.274.7976. No appointment is necessary. The flu kills as many as 20,000 people a year. The vaccine is indicated for active immunization for the prevention of influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and B. Vaccination with the flu vaccine may not protect all people who receive the vaccine. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will distribute a limited supply of the influenza vaccine to persons age 18 and over with no history of Guillain-Barre Syndrome or rubber latex allergy and who are not pregnant.

“Our community is well known for its philanthropic values, so we encourage you to participate by dropping off toys or clothing even if you have already had your flu shot,” Siebenaler said.

"I was so pleased to meet Dr. Harris and his team," says Cathy, "They are friendly and welcoming. Dr. Harris discussed treatment that would address the cause of my problem, not just the symptoms. Through his experience and cutting-edge technology, Dr. Harris helped change the shape of my spine and increase the vertebrae spacing, putting the structure of my body back into a more normal alignment. Dr. Harris has helped roll back the clock, so to speak. I would recommend Dr Harris and his team to anyone suffering from back pain or pain that is a result of back injuries."

NO MORE BACK PAIN IN THE WAY Cathy Jones loves to travel to far off places. She has been to Budapest, Switzerland, and Paris to name a few of her destinations. “When I am no longer able to travel great distances, I will visit places closer to home," she says. Recently retired after more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, Cathy is looking forward to being able to travel even more. Concerned about the nagging pain that normally accompanies long periods of sitting on an airplane and carrying luggage from terminal to terminal, Cathy, who has suffered from back problems for the past 20 years, decided to seek help before leaving the country. Being proactive, Cathy says, “I knew that if I did not address the problem soon, it would escalate and the results could become debilitating. I think of it like the light in my car coming on indicating I need to add air to the tires. It is not an immediate need; but the sooner I address it, the less consequences there are. In the past, Cathy addressed her back pain with monthly massages and sporadic chiropractic visits. In April of this year, Cathy discovered Dr. Steve Harris and her outlook on travel and the care of her back just got sunnier. Dr. Harris offers a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain or to help improve their overall musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. Harris opened Sugar Land Health Center in 1982 and has been in practice for over 40 years. Known for incorporating new technology and techniques that complement his safe and holistic approach, Dr. Harris offers gentle chiropractic care. Through his years as a chiropractor, Dr. Harris has developed his own methods and treatments for every layer of the body for stronger results. His natural, effective, gentle approach promotes relief from pain.
