Jingle bell

fun run

The Arthritis Foundation will host the 2nd annual Sugar Land Jingle Bell Run for arthritis on Saturday, December 7, 2019. This festive 5k run and one-mile walk is bringing holiday cheer to Sugar Land with the goal of raising $65,000 for the Foundation’s mission. Participants are encouraged to dress in festive costumes and get out and moving as well as raise awareness and funds to cure America’s #1 cause of disability. Taking place in more than 100 cities nationwide, the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run helps the one in four Americans, including 300,000 children, living with arthritis pain every day. From funding cutting-edge research for new treatments and ultimately a cure to advocating for health care access, the Arthritis Foundation is boldly leading the fight against arthritis. “Every dollar raised during our Jingle Bell Run events makes it possible for us to provide life-changing information and resources to both children and adults impacted by this painful disease,” said Jen Torres, Arthritis Foundation Executive Director.

About the Arthritis Foundation: The Arthritis Foundation is the Champion of Yes. Leading the fight for the arthritis community, the Foundation helps conquer everyday battles through lifechanging information and resources, access to optimal care, advancements in science and community connections. The Arthritis Foundation’s goal is to chart a winning course, guiding families in developing personalized plans for living a full life – and making each day another stride towards a cure. The Foundation also publishes Arthritis Today, the awardwinning magazine that reaches 4 million readers.

The Sugar Land Jingle Bell Run will feature local honorees who embody the Arthritis Foundation’s Champion of Yes spirit. Dr. Jeff Hogan, Private Practice Chiropractor, has been selected as the 2019 Medical Honoree for his work in the arthritis community. This year’s Youth Honoree is Greatwood resident, Emily Pinter, who was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at the age of 2. Event Chairs Amanda Heidemann and Michelle Posey are both longtime volunteers of the Arthritis Foundation. To learn more and Jingle Bell Run,

As we head into the holiday season and contemplate where to spend Thanksgiving and what we will be eating, many potential home-buyers may be pondering whether or not they are ready to purchase a home for themselves or if renting is the better option. The answer is different for everyone and it is important that you do what is best for you (and your family). One of the biggest factors to look at are variable costs. While a lease payment and a mortgage payment may be fixed, other costs differ. For instance, a broken toilet or a fence in need of repair would be your responsibility as a homeowner, and the responsibility of the landlord if you were renting. So, going into the decision with that in mind will lead to less stress as unexpected repair or maintenance costs come up. Renting also requires less cash up front. Since there is no need for a down-payment, renting typically begins with paying for the first and last months of the lease. Homebuying will usually require a 10-20% down-payment. If the day comes that you decide to move, you will need to sell the house. If you decide to move at the end of your lease, you simply move. While there is a smaller investment up-front when you rent a home vs. buying it, it is important to note that no matter what happens with the value of the home, you will never gain equity while renting. However, with purchasing a home, the mortgage balance decreases over time and equity builds, even if the value of the home does not increase. On a similar note, tax advantages also go to the homeowner‌ and, when renting, that is the landlord. Be sure to seek competent legal and accounting advice for most specifics regarding tax advantages with home ownership. Lastly, if personalizing your living space is important to you, take note that this is typically limited when it comes to renting. There will usually be stipulations in the lease that indicate what you are allowed to do within the home in regards to personalizing it (paint, hardware, etc.). However, with home-buying, the sky is the limit when it comes to making your home just the way you want it inside. The decision might not be as easy as choosing the menu for your family Thanksgiving meal, but having these conversations will help to determine what the best option

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO IN THE MONTH OF

1

In the garden it’s time to plant carrots, beets, turnips, mustard, onion, radishes, collards and spinach. Keep the plants and seedlings moist and away from critters as they are doing their best to forage as we go into the cooler days.

November

2

This year I am collecting items for The Little House of Tiny Tots again which cares for the early education, clothing and feeding of Houston homeless children. If you would like to donate to them they are very much in need of basic items and for the littles of course toys. As you are putting up decorations for the holidays it’s always a great time to create a new pile of gently used items and drop off to the Goodwill now. Many families go there regularly to find ways to also decorate their homes that are in need.

3 4

It may seem difficult to carve out a few days for yourself during the busiest time of the year, however you’ll find yourself being better for having done it. De-stress by booking yourself a spa day and mani-pedi before the party season begins.

5

Beauty trends are always fun to try but the holidays give all of us an excuse to really step out of our box. This year a few to try are a BOLD emerald eye with a neutral lip, or a fantastic plum matte lip or for the most daring, a sprinkle of glitter straight across the lids!

6

On my nightside table now are two fantastic books that would be both good for enjoying and also for gifting. “The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma” by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. and “With All Due Respect: Defending America

7

with Grit and Grace” by Nikki R. Haley. Make a batch of delicious cookies and drop off to your neighbors. Last year I made my cranberry and orange jam and they are still talking about it! LOL This year I’m making a collection of three no bake recipes from my childhood. These are well loved and a great memory maker for the children in the kitchen as well!

COOKIE COLLECTION

Nothing reminds us more of the holidays than getting a box of homemade cookies from neighbors and friends. There’s just something so special about that! This year I am making a collection of three “No-Bake” varieties that are sure to satisfy all.

Gingerbread truffles Ingredients

What to do:

1 13-oz package of gingersnap cookies 8 oz cream cheese 16 oz vanilla almond bark

Place gingersnaps in the food processor until they are fine crumbs.

Toppers (optional) use nutmeg for garnish red and green sprinkle mix or blue and silver, if you are celebrating Hanukkah

Place crumbs in a medium bowl, add the cream cheese and mix. Roll cookie mixture into 1 inch balls. Place balls on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper and stick in the fridge for about 45 minutes. Melt almond bark according to directions on package. Dip each cookie ball in almond bark and place back on lined cookie sheet. Pick your toppers and place in refrigerator.

(Recipes CONT'D on page 14)

Plan a little cozy time for you and your spouse. Take off for an afternoon to watch a movie or go out for a walk or prepare a picnic for just the two of you in your backyard. A little bottle of chilled wine, some special cheese and fruits is really all you need. Plan a fun art project with the children that can be taken to our local nursing home and tuck in a candy cane. All of our elderly enjoy visits from children at any age and during the holidays and they children will remember having given of themselves during the season.

10

While everyone is gathered doing festive family things it would be a good time to have an open discussion with the children as to their goals for the upcoming year. Ask them to define what they would like to accomplish over the next 12 months and help them map out a plan for doing so. NOVEMBER 2019

C h i l d Advocates of Fort Bend

by Jason Luthor

November can be both one of the best, but also one of the hardest, months of the year for people. For families around the United States, November invokes the image of the Pilgrims, eating Turkey, and being thankful for what they have. It’s a time when the Fall season is just about to transition into Winter and the joys of the holidays. However, even while people are celebrating, it’s important to remember that there are children out there who are in need of help because of various kinds of abuse. This is where the Child Advocates of Fort Bend come in. This specialized organization based out of Richmond is a nonprofit agency that helps children who have been victims of both sexual and physical abuse. First opened in 1991, the organization celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016. In that 25 years, it helped support more than 14,000 children between birth and just over 18 years of age. Today, the organization is staffed by 35 full time professionals who actively collaborate with 40 different other agencies. Over time, the Child Advocates have been recognized for their outstanding practices while investigating situations where children were potentially being abused. This has led to successful interventions in situations when children have been at risk and helped rescues many kids from abusive situations.

community OUTREACH

Although there is a significant number of permanent staff, the organization is also supported by 200 child advocate volunteers. So, if you’ve been looking for an opportunity to help in your local community, the Child Advocates might be just the organization for you. Volunteers can take on a number of different roles while helping. They can become Court Appointed special Advocates, help with the organization’s annual Gala for the Children and Christmas Home Tour, or be a Voices for Children Ambassador. There are also plenty of other volunteering opportunities available. Volunteers can work in the organization’s offices, serve as a mentor, or help out creating a positive environment for kids in the Children’s Advocacy Center. There are even positions available on the Board of Directors, Advisory Council, Friends Council, and Volunteer Council. In essence, regardless of where you feel best equipped to help, there’s a place for you in the Child Advocates of Fort Bend. Volunteers wanting to help out can visit the Child Advocates website. Because of the nature of the work, volunteers will need to be at least 21 years of age and able to pass a background screening and fingerprinting. Even after finishing these checks, potential volunteers still need to be interviewed by the staff and attend training. Anyone helping in the Children’s Advocacy Center needs to undergo 16 hours of training while those volunteering for the Court Appointed Special Advocates program needs to undergo 30 hour of training. Even though the requirements for volunteering are high, the rewards are worth it, since every volunteer contributes to helping save a child from abuse. september 2019

health Report

from RELIEF PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS

If you suffer from a pelvic floor disorder, you’re no doubt familiar with the pain and discomfort that can accompany it, along with the feelings of embarrassment or isolation that many patients report. You’re not alone. These disorders are more common than you think, and the good news is that pelvic health physical therapy, offered at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, can help manage and, in some cases, alleviate the symptoms of these debilitating conditions. Studies show that as many as one in four women suffer from a pelvic floor disorder. The most common problem is urinary incontinence, along with fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction and pelvic muscular issues. A well-designed pelvic health physical therapy program can reduce pain and give patients improved bladder control by identifying the problem muscles and increasing their strength and coordination through individualized exercise treatment. “A lot of patients are afraid to admit – even to their doctor – that they’re suffering from pain or incontinence, or they’re afraid they’ll need surgery,” said pelvic health specialist Kristyn Richard, PT, DPT, board-certified physical therapist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “So they just live with their symptoms and find ways to manage them by using adult diapers or medication. Fortunately, we have a proven alternative for patients struggling with these problems. Our pelvic health physical therapy program is extremely effective in treating both pain and incontinence, and some patients even see improvements after one session.” Richard says that pelvic floor disorders have increased in both women and men in recent years. The number of American women with at least one pelvic floor disorder is expected to increase to 43.8 million in 2050, up from 28.1 million in 2010, and the number of women with urinary incontinence is expected to increase by 55 percent. Physical

therapy

treatments

for

pelvic

floor

Kristyn Richard, PT, DPT disorders begin with an examination and review of the patient’s medical history, symptoms and how long they’ve been experiencing the problem. From there, Richard uses a variety of methods to train the patient to enhance their pelvic floor muscle function and coordinate these muscles with their abdominal muscles. Pelvic health physical therapy typically involves one to two sessions a week for four to 12 weeks. “We want our patients to get the most out of their physical therapy, so we encourage them to take the lessons home and integrate these exercises in their day-to-day activities,” said Richard. “Pelvic floor exercises are great because you can do them while sitting at your desk, cooking in the kitchen or even lying in bed at night. I also encourage patients to make lifestyle changes that can ease stress on the bladder, such as avoiding irritants like caffeine and spicy or acidic foods.
