Spring Break Tips Every year, millions of students from across the country take time out from school to enjoy the arrival of Spring. Yes, Spring Break strikes once a year and puts a tinge of fear in the hearts of some parents as they worry about whether their kids will be okay. This starts to get particularly stressful for parents whose college aged students will be traveling to far flung destinations around the country or even the globe. However, there are always ways to stay safe, no matter what destination your student is visiting. Make share that your child stays safe over Spring Break by showing them these key tips. 1. Use a Buddy System One of the best ways of staying safe is by making sure that you travel with someone else who knows where you are at all times. Make sure that you have each other’s contact information and try to stay together wherever you go. If you do need to split up, then make sure that your buddy knows where you’re going to be, at what time, and when to expect you back. Your buddy can also keep tabs on you when you’re in a particularly crowded or rowdy location. 2. Secure Your Cash Especially when you’re traveling, it can be really easy to lose track of your money. Cash can easily go missing without you even noticing. It can be even worse if you lose your credit card, which gives thieves access to your funds in your bank account. You’re even at risk of possibly having your credit card information stolen if you swipe at a less than reputable location. As a

result, you’ll only want to use your credit card at reputable locations if at all possible. Use cash at locations you’re not sure of but keep the cash you have on hand to a minimum. You don’t want to run the risk of losing hundreds of dollars because you lost it or had it stolen. 3. Watch Your Social Media Use One of the trickiest ways that people have been stalked as of late has been through their social media. Today, people tend to overshare. They’ll post everywhere they’ve been, where they’re going next, and even their full itinerary for the day. This leaves them vulnerable to being tracked by would-be criminals. Keep any personal information you post, particularly about your location, off of social media. At worst, post only to friends you know, and even then, avoid posting the places you’ll be traveling to. 4. Be Responsible Spring Break is a crazy time, and some of the most popular locations become host to overwhelming numbers of people. Drinking happens, partying happens, and a lot of dumb choices get made. It’s important to have fun while you’re on vacation, but you can’t forget that there are a lot of irresponsible people out there and that accidents happen. Enjoy your time but do so safely. A few precautions and a little bit of care can go a long way toward helping you stay safe during Spring Break. Enjoy your time in moderation and be responsible with your choices.

Located on LJ Parkway, just down University Boulevard from the Colony Shakes Shopping Center, sits the WSW Blo N Glo Lounge. Originally opened in December, the lounge has quickly become a go-to destination for women in Fort Bend, with its welcoming crisp modern décor, looking for services ranging from massage to skin therapy. The lounge’s name reflects its core mission: women supporting women. To support that goal, the lounge makes it its mission to bring the absolute best in personalized approaches to beauty.

community spotlight

Owner Violeta Papandreou has made it her goal to deliver tailored beauty solutions for all women. A transplant from Lithuania, Papandreou spent her early years working on her family’s farm. As she grew older, her interest in beauty and cosmetics grew with her. At the early age of 15, she became an AVON consultant. For the next few years, she would get to know the field better while also working toward immigrating to the United States. When she arrived in Chicago at the age of 21, it was without much money but with the passion to write her own success story. Papandreou drew upon her experience with AVON and soon found work at one of the busiest spas in Chicago. During the same period, she also worked toward getting her Mechanical Engineering and Management degree from Vilniau Technical University. With dedication and an incredible work ethic, she was also able to get an education from a CIDESCO accredited beauty school known as the “Art of Beauty.” However, she had to put her career aside for a while when her daughter was born. She spent the following five years full time raising her children, but soon felt inspired to return to the beauty industry. Hoping to prove to her children that success was possible with enough hard work and determination, Papandreou partnered with the renowned Simone Mahler brand to exclusively deliver advanced skincare beyond what most women have ever experienced. The Simone Mahler line of products relies on advanced digital technology to create customized skincare recommendations and solutions. Papandreou and her staff carefully analyze the beauty needs of their clientele and choose tailored solutions based on their analysis. However, visitors to the WSW Blo & Glo will find more than just skin treatments available. There are a number of beauty treatments at Blo N Glo that range from customized

spa services to laser treatments, skin resurfacing , wrinkle reduction, skin rejuvenation, and total hair care. While the Simone Mahler brand was built on skin care, Papandreou’s beauty lounge delivers multiple services. Working together with her staff, which includes hairdressers, laser technicians, an aesthetician, and a plastic surgeon medical director, Papandreou helps each visitor find the beauty treatment that’s best for them. Papandreou’s story is one of success even in the face of adversity. From her youth in Lithuania to her time juggling school, motherhood, and entrepreneurship, she has consistently proven how hard work pays off. Today, she’s a fixture of the local community and continues to make happiness of her clients her number one goal. For anyone who’s interested in a unique combination of luxury and highly personalized beauty treatment, the WSW Blo N Glo Lounge is open from Monday to Saturday from between 10:00 A.M. through 7:00 P.M. Encouraging Girls in

Over the past two decades, there has been a growing emphasis on encouraging participation in STEM subjects. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and these four subjects form the basis of some of the best paying jobs in the country. There are STEM career options even for people who don’t get a college degree. Electrical installers, pharmacy technicians, and computer support specialists are just some of the careers that people can enter even when they don’t go on to college, with many of these jobs commanding salaries of around $50,000. Of course, going to college opens up even more career options for people. Roles as software developers, market research analysts, and engineering managers open up when people go on to just a bachelor’s degree. Many of these jobs command salaries tens of thousands of dollars higher than what’s available without a bachelor’s. Despite how promising entering a STEM field can be, young women start to fall behind young men at the undergraduate level. Their participation in science and engineering starts to decline, and they receive far fewer degrees in areas like engineering and mathematics. It’s a curious phenomenon, since girls and boys perform almost equally all the way through their senior year of high school. Girls and boys are both just as likely to enroll in advanced science courses, mathematics courses, and advanced placement calculus. While there are some differences, girls and boys tend to be on par with one another in most

14

STEM areas except for computer science and engineering. Since girls tend to fall behind as they become young women enrolled in college, it’s important to continue encouraging their interest in STEM fields through to their final year of high school. There are a few ways that this can be done. Girls tend to lose interest in STEM subjects over the course of a few years, between the ages of 11 and 15. It’s important that, within the age range, teachers try to keep interest in STEM subjects high. Teachers can ask questions that keep young girls engaged with the material and let them explain the topics on their own. This kind of highly engaged learning approach makes young girls active in the learning process. Having young girls become peer instructors to others in their class, which encourages their own understanding and passion for STEM subjects. Both teachers and parents can also show young girls’ examples of women in STEM fields who are highly accomplished. There are many incredible scientific accomplishments that women have made just in the 20th century, but very often these examples go untaught. Rosalind Franklin, for instance, helped contribute to the discovery of human DNA, the basic molecules from which all people are made of. However, because she wasn’t honored with the same Nobel Prize that her male coworkers were presented, her role is

molding minds often overlooked. Providing strong examples such as these can help keep young girls ambitious and hopeful about what they can accomplish in STEM fields. Parents can help encourage that ambition even more by presenting them with shows and entertainment that demonstrate the many roles women can fulfill in STEM careers.

health report New Technology Reduces

Chemotherapy Related Hair Loss The cooling system works by lowering the temperature of hair follicles immediately before, during and after chemotherapy. That prevents chemotherapy drugs from attacking fastdividing hair follicle cells in the growth stage. “Hair loss during chemotherapy is more than just an image issue,” said Amy Sebastian-Deutsch, director of oncology at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. “It’s also a very visible sign that a patient has cancer, which can lead to privacy concerns. Many patients also report that hair loss impacts how others see them and is harmful to their own sense of well-being. The scalp cooling system can be used by both men and women in order to reduce the likelihood of CIA.”

For patients undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer, hair loss can be a devastating side effect. But now a proven technology – available to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital patients – can help reduce or even eliminate the hair loss known as chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). The Paxman Scalp Cooling System was approved by the FDA in 2017 and is now cleared for use on patients who are undergoing chemotherapy to treat solidtumor cancers such as ovarian, breast, colorectal, bowel and prostate cancer.

many of them find that losing their hair is a constant reminder of their cancer and a real obstacle to a positive attitude. Now they can approach chemotherapy without the additional concern of hair loss and have more control in their fight against cancer.” If you have general questions about scalp cooling, please contact our Oncology Nurse Navigators at 281.276.8989 or if you want to know if you can be a candidate for scalp cooling, ask your oncologist at your next appointment. To learn more about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland or our Facebook page at fb.com/ methodistsugarland for the latest news, events and information.

The scalp cooling system includes a soft, flexible cap that fits comfortably on the patient’s head for the duration of each chemotherapy treatment session. The cap is connected to a small cooling machine that keeps the scalp at a constant temperature, just a few degrees below normal. The cap can also be detached from the machine for brief periods to allow for greater mobility. The reduction in scalp temperature slows blood flow to hair follicles and limits the impact of chemotherapy drugs, which work by preventing cell division. “This is a major breakthrough that has very real benefits for both men and women fighting cancer,” said boardcertified oncologist Jorge Darcourt, M.D., of Houston Methodist Oncology Partners at Sugar Land. “Hair loss is almost always a topic of concern with patients, and

Alisa Murrays Persian Rice with Cranberries and Pepitas This dish is wholesome enough to be served as an entree although my meat loving boys always insist it be a side! It’s flavored with turmeric and saffron which gives it that distinctly Persian flare! Also, this pairs well with traditional Thanksgiving fare.

In a rice cooker place the rice, stock, water, turmeric, saffron and set to cook.

You’ll Need: Basmati Rice 2 cups dry 1 box of chicken stock (I prefer bone broth) Two cups of craisins 1 cup of pepita seeds Three saffron threads 1 tablespoon of Turmeric 3 Tablespoons of fresh chopped parsley (less if you want the look and less of the taste) 1/4 cup olive oil 2 cups of water

Biophilia

A new year brings a new season of events and exhibits at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Over the past year, the museum has hosted medieval knights, Sherlock Holmes, and a display of some of the deadliest creatures on the planet. To start 2019, the museum will be hosting a new exhibit known as Biophilia. This will be a unique take on science that blends it with art in a unique exhibit. Developed by Christopher Marley, the exhibit includes displays of the natural world that have been creatively brought to life through art. Marley approaches his subjects with a unique focus on piecing them together in a way that creates art from natural life. Brightly painted beetles form a rainbow canvas while tentacled sea life are assembled in three dimensional images. In other cases, single, colorful images of birds and other wildlife are on display. Marley’s work sometimes uses single subjects while at other times bringing multiple subjects together to create larger, bolder imagery. The complete exhibit includes over 400 pieces that each emphasize the point

26

that art and science are not mutually exclusive. Instead, they go hand in hand. Yes, nature and biology require the work of scientists, but they also command a great deal of beauty on their own. Marley tries to emphasize both science and art in his work. He tries to remind guests that it’s important to find beauty in the natural world the same as it is important to understand that same world using science. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the exhibit has become popular among educators, who have used Biophilia to emphasize how diverse the natural world is. The many creatures that Marley has on display range from birds to reptiles and insects of all types. As guests wander from one exhibit to another, the diversity of displays help emphasize just how many kinds of wildlife there are in our world. Teachers use Biophilia to display the biodiversity of the planet in a creative and artistic manner. Other teachers favor the artistic elements of the exhibit and use it in the hope of inspiring the creative impulses of their own students. Because of the broad appeal

of Biophilia, students from kindergarten through college will find something to enjoy about the exhibit. Marley himself has spent years refining his approach to art. His use of preserved natural specimens as his artistic medium is unique, with few others using a similar approach. Biophilia is the culmination of his work, incorporating diverse, preserved wildlife from throughout the world. He also collects these specimens in a sustainably responsible manner, ensuring that his approach does not threaten the delicate balance of life in the environments he takes his specimens from. In honor of his work, Marley has been featured in some of the most prominent papers and magazines in the country, including The New York Times, Wired, and The New Yorker. Prices for the exhibit have yet to be released. Biophilia will be on display from February 8th through September 2nd, 2019.

Accelerate Studio As a Missouri City native and resident, deciding to launch my business locally was a nobrainer. Accelerate Studio was born out of the desire to bring indoor cycling from the city to the suburbs, yielding long-lasting lifestyle habits for all. Initially, opening a brick and mortar was not in my budget. Not letting fear or a modest budget stop me, I persisted. Therefore, we purchased a trailer and transported sixteen bikes and equipment between local business, setting up our boutique style studio. Empowering and bringing confidence to the community became essential. Accelerate has a now repurposed space in the Villas at Sienna Plantation and offers multiple classes a day, hosts private events, and provides mobile capability for special events. In the end, it was a natural fit for me and my brother (business partner); and was the best decision I ever made. Attention to detail when it comes to an excellent customer service experience; and passion for ‘creative hair design’ has paid off! A “failure is not an option” attitude is what I’ve learned leads to success- There were many tough moments along the way but, “pushing through when I thought I had nothing else to give has gotten me where I am today.” “Creative Hair Design.
